Money has been thrown at the town centre the rest of Barnsley is a dump the out lying villages are forgotten by the corrupt liebour council. BUT the people of Barnsley are the greatest, friendly and will help anybody.

Agree. Coming from there and working in the mines, certainly my father's and grandfather's generations were perhaps second to none for their extremely hard work, often in very dangerous conditions. In what would have been the generation of my great grandparents, two mines near where I lived blew up, killing close to 300, and 400 people, most of the village, including women and children!

@Niall O'Neill I could tell, loved to visit those places again. Hope everything will work out ok for the people, the migrant problem was rampant even when I stayed there.

@@SuntJack Strange, there were no migrants when I was young, as the work on offer was mostly in coal mines, dangerous, hard, and low paid, and the community was very strong and fiercely independent and integrated, although really friendly. Not lived there for some time, but visited, and I know many older locals were unhappy with immigrants, which is why they supported Brexit. I think all cultures are better when they are built up by people from their own places, but globalism and capitalism means others look for work elsewhere, or to escape war and poverty, so not easy, but a good and equitable world would ensure people can stay in their home towns and make them beautiful, and just visit other places. Pleased you enjoyed your time there, and the place and people left you with positive memories!!! All the very best

@Niall O'Neill 100% percent agree with you pal, I saw with my own eyes what happens when people are coming from all over the world, some of them are alright, but cheap labour drove the wages into the ground. Barnsley is a great place to live, it’s not loud and there’s a perfect mixture of nature and man made buildings etc.

@@dominiccooper8967 People aren't friendly in South Yorkshire especially Barnsley whenever I go town or most places in Barnsley it's people being cunts for no reason and living here and growing up here has been shite for me and I'm nowhere near proud to be from here and if anything I'm more than ashamed especially when the council and those in power do fuck all to help people like us in poverty and do fuck all to help us live happy and get by.

It rarely had much, so the people learnt to work and play hard, and developed thick skins, a taste for drinking as still seems to be the case, but not a great place for genuine and deep culture. The community spirit was great though, but after the strike, things going down hill, like many places. Don't live there now, so cannot comment on what it is currently like, but I know there are still some good characters left, but most gone early, due to mines, coal dust, hard work, and hard living, such as beer in the gallonful, chain smoking, and nightly visits to chip ole. It compared to Glasgow for it's way of life, and I recall miners going to Blackpool and fighting with Glaswegians, whilst being barred and accompanied out of York, Pontefract and other places. These lads stuck together, and were generally tougher than other Yorkshire towns, call it genetic evolvement through the hard and strong workers needed in the mines. Probably still friendly in certain ways, but there are sections that can be rough too. And now many spaces that divided former mining villages are built upon, the bit of natural beauty that was left, oft near canals, has gone. The kind of place you love, or loathe, but good for those with a liking for drinking.

By the way, I only speak for the Dearne Valley, and not for other outlying areas, which are more natural, and easier going, and not so absorbed with drinking and fighting.

I live now in Kilnhust, I am from rotherham , Barnsley is a lovely place, and Yorkshire folk are the best, we may not have much but we are warm friendly folk who will help anybody,and proud hard working people,so up yours !

The town hall, and some of the buildings just up the street, past the local College, are very nice! Most mining towns are not, in fact some are dire, although they are better than they used to be when the mines were open. Many bought their homes, did them up, and never worked again. These towns looked good before 1900 I would say, when many stone houses were built, and there were spaces between the houses. The red brick houses like Coronation street ruined some areas, although they were hives of community activity, which suits some people. Not me though, so I moved!

I live in Leeds now but am a Barnsley lass and completely agree. The government always have their heads on looking fancy and being great but never on the wellness of the town. If we tried I bet Barnsley could be a great city. Nothing Manchester like but up there. We been seen so badly in this video and the nice parts of city been wiped out. Around bus station and that isn’t too bad but west side like you said is just amazing.

@@priyastraw9519 Thinking about moving to Leeds in future, far better than Barnsley and yea if they worked hard enough Barnsley could be like a full on city with cathedral and even mini airport potentially and maybe bigger buildings and could overtake and be better than Leeds but I highly doubt it's ever going to be that great which is why I will probs just move to Leeds. Very valid statement Mark - there are some splendid areas around Barnsley - However there is just a slight problem to living that surrounding beauty....Money. Also there are far too many people in the UK. I left over twenty years ago ...from Tarn originally U Reds......

Yes, different culture, different people, different buildings, lots of beautiful countryside, but need money to live there. I come from the rough Dearne Valley, where community was always foremost, and the conditions produced some very special people and villages, but capitalism is dragging everything down. Too many houses, too little space, all decent shops have gone, all banks have gone, rather like the American Midwest really. And there we see the face of capitalism, and its ruthless streak, which has been destroying people and the land for far, far too long. Exploitation of the earth and men can only go so long before great wars and conflicts, alongside natural disasters, become the fruits of such greed and selfishness. So yes, an eyesore at times in the Dearne, and lots of needs, but still plenty of community spirit, which is more than I can say for the richer areas, where the smug sit in their ivory towers looking down on their victims. How very convenient.

Agree the outskirts are a different world to the Dearne and Don Valleys, where all the industry was, most industrial place in Europe at one time, maybe the world, and ir left it's mark, on the character of the landscape there, and within the people, who became extremely communal and kind, but rough on the other hand. Move towards Doncaster, or Sheffield, or Leeds, and there are some lovely places, but I don't think the people in those old mining villages see these places. It would do em good though, and soften them up a bit. Although Wentworth is my pick, and is adjacent to these mining towns, as it was privately owned, and could not be developed.

Always lacked good clothes shops, as the few trendier people went to Leeds, or Sheffield. Always lacked culture too, so never pulled big bands, top theatre shows etc. Rarely had good nightclubs either, especially back in 60's and 70's. The then miners, who were the majority of workers, were hard workers and drinkers, liked cards, strip clubs, footy, and scrapping. Sometimes they watched Barnsley, Leeds, or one of Sheffield clubs, usually going for a drink and a scrap. Now I don't live there, as lost job at pit, and moved. Changing the culture there won't happen overnight, so I would imagine changes are minimal. Okay if you like boozing and birding it, but don't expect any genuine sophistication!

You have to use the old railway tracks, which have been made into Ways. Don't live there either, so don't know how they open access up to other areas, but I know some who use them for fitness, and chill out time.
