Its definitely important to have goals, and aspire to fill higher billets/responsibilities so that your command thrives, but how exactly does stressing about personal progression make you a good leader?
@austinm5618
@austinm5618 2 года назад
@@mark_338 it means you’re actually stressing the importance of your duties/responsibilities/obligations as a leader, not just blowing them off and letting shit roll downhill to your subordinates. I think he’s basically saying that being stressful about getting promoted/picking up an important duty in the military is a good sign as it shows you care about doing very well in your new position. A shitbag NCO probably wouldn’t be as stressed since they fully expect to hit their new rank and then just cruise from there, doing the bare minimum and such

Respect your opinion but it wasn't that way 20 years ago. The sh*t that E-5 and below went through compared to the sh*t that SSgt's went through was night and day. You know what's worse than being a SSgt on duty? A corporal on duty, or on a working party, or pulling pits for officers/ SNCOs. Congrats on the promotion... don't feel too down on yourself, SSgt is a well respected rank!

Army guy here. For me, being a corporal absolutely sucked more than any other rank (granted I haven’t hit my 6 yet). But in the army as a corporal, you’re expected to take on the roles and responsibilities of a SGT however you’re still paid, and often times looked at by your joes as just a glorified specialist that doesn’t have to beat those responsibilities.
@MountaintravelerEddie
@MountaintravelerEddie 2 года назад
Wow, and I worked with the army a lot…. The Marines are always pushing more shit down to the junior ranks. More responsibility to the ranks. In a few of the MOS’s I held during my career, a 1Sgt in the army did the same as a Cpl/Sgt in the Marines…. That’s because we used to go to Ft Bragg a lot to do some training with the army. Ok, so maybe I’m old…I’m talking in the late 1990’s to 2002’ish. Semper USMC / Retired

I agree with Corporal in the army especially if your frocked. I loved being a SSG in the Army, although SSG in the Army is more of a Sgt role in Marine Corps. The thing more important than rank is always environment. Especially in the Infantry. If you have good TLs and a good relationship with your PL then things fall in place and can be very rewarding. As a SSG I served in many roles from Squad Leader to PSG to even PL and the key was always forming good respectful relationships. A toxic PSG can absolutely crush the effectiveness of a platoon more than any other position imo.

Congratulations on your promotion SSgt. My worst experience was as a Lance Corporal. My MOS didn't promote to corporal because it was closed out during my time in. At the beginning it was fine but as I got to my 3rd year in we got a retread that lat moved into our MOS from supply. He had been out for three years and came back as a LCpl. I had to train him on how to do our job and inventory our equipment. I was a 0621 and 0622 radio operator. He picked up Cpl and Sgt in the next few months because he was just a 0621. He didn't really know the job that well but was promoted to our section leader. One day he questioned the way I was doing my job and tried to micromanage me. I felt disrespected because I was the one that trained him. I was one of the most experienced at my job if not the most in that unit. Having someone degrade you because they have a power trip makes it hard to do your job with a smile like I was used to. Fast forward I was placed in charge of a field training exercise because I was the senior enlisted in my MOS even though I was only an LCpl. A Cpl was put in charge of us on paper because we needed an NCO to technically be in charge. He ended up being someone TAD to us and had not experience at all with radios which didn't matter, I was running it. I trained the Cpl how to set up the gear but for the most part he was in the COMM tent. I was the one making the radio watch schedule for the vehicle mounted radios. When it was time for chow I would relieve the one on radio watch and send everyone under me to chow. I would go after they came back. This was the how it went for the whole operation. On the second to last day the Cpl saw everyone coming from morning chow and started to rip them for not being at their post. I heard this and came out of the vehicle to defend them. He tried to say that he was in charge and that we all had to do what he said including me. I express myself to what kind of leader I thought he was and made him understand that I was the real one in charge because he hadn't been part of what we were doing during the whole operation even though I showed him how to set it up and also explained that he still didn't know how to troubleshoot our equipment. He walked away. Later he tried to take credit for my success in front of the battalion commander but a PFC that I was in charge of was there too and told the truth. There are several times like this where I was ignored, disrespected, lied about and overworked because I was a LCpl. Several times I had to do things my own way to prove I was right to get the job done and took heat from SSgts and Sgts until they realized they were wrong and I was right. I had great teachers on all levels that taught me how to be a great leader and be very proficient at my job. They prepared me in a way so that I didn't feel stress when a new task was in front of me. One day I was returning from the MEU and I had literally just walked into my old unit after being away a year and a half. I was Cpl by this time. A Capt walked in behind me and asked who was in charge. Everyone pointed to me. I didn't know all the officers, staff NCOs and Sgts we're all out doing separate training exercises or things that required them to be there. I didn't hesitate and asked how I could help him. After getting that info I asked him to give me a few minutes to see what I could do. I went to my unit to get a status and then helped the Capt with what he requested with no problem. Remember no matter what rank you are continue teaching everyone underneath how to be a good leader and how to do their jobs. By doing this it will make your job as a SSgt easier. You're Marines will break their backs for you to make you look good and they will respect you the same way I respect the SSgts that were hard on me and taught me how to be a great leader. Good luck on your career and I wish you the best. Semper Fi

Congratulations on the promotion! I enjoyed being a SSgt. I can see why it is commonly referred to as the worst rank, but I think the big disconnect is in the role-switch. Staff work and officer guidance is a lot less gratifying than teaching, training, getting dirty with the troops. It can still happen, of course, but if a SNCO is having to do that out of necessity, the problem is lazy/weak/inexperienced NCOs. The SNCO in that situation may be weak/lazy/inexperienced too if they can't correct the issue. And, yeah, most new Staff Sergeants are not prepared for the responsibility and the silliness that being a SNCO comes with.

For Army...E6 was definitely a challenge. You definitely were not a senior NCO which was clear but you also were one of the kids anymore. As a great as sergeant is you're still brand new to the NCO Corps for us. When you make staff that's when it looks like you might know a thing or two, even if you don't.

Congratulations, SSgt! Remember that nobody expects you to memorize everything Marine Corps related. You just need to know where to find the answers and fortunately the Marine Corps has a reference, manual, and order for almost everything

Get your degree and go OCS. You would make a great officer.

For the Navy it is easily the E-6 too. You get all the stress of having to operate at Chief (E-7) level, none of the pay or respect. Then the chiefs just dump all over you. Plus all of your junior sailors. Yup. Definitely being an E-6

Navy different. A first class isn't in the same category as Chief, they can't even eat in the same mess area as Chiefs. In the Corps, a SSgt is in the same category as GySgt's.

I served 21 years in the Marine Corps and I made SSgt. at about 11 years in... I was already holding a SSgt. Billet in my M.O.S. as Howitzer Section Chief so I was already familiar with the added responsibility of that rank of Staff Sgt. i Loved being a SSgt. it was excellent there is no such thing as A BOOT SSgt. i held that rank in high esteem and honor I did a lot of additional duties as a SSgt. Platoon Sgt. duties.. Color guard duties. Trainer. for MCMAP as well as P.M.I/ range coach duties.. it was a lot of leadership responsibility but I gravitated to it very easily. I was recommended for promotion to Gunnery Sgt. but I made the decision to exit service at 21 years IN the Marines my body was getting beat up from deployment.. Martial arts training and Field Artillery specific training as well as the Constant P.T. pounding my knees and back.. I always ran a high first class PFT in the upper 280's when I saw that start to decline to the mid 260's. even though I was still training hard that's when I knew my body was telling me it's a wrap and my military career came to a halt after 21 years of honorable service. and I can say I loved being a SSgt. / E-6. it was my favorite rank I held. good video dude. and Semper-Fidelis. SSgt. Calhoun 0811. (ret)

As a retired Gunny married to an Officer, you need to retire as an Officer. You joined for one reason, you’re doing 20 for another. Enlisted retirement pay is trash compared to what Officers get.

Facts! Only way I would of stayed in was commissioning, unfortunately last year was not the best, so I decided to get out and enjoy my time out in the civilian sector.
