i laughed at S curve. And “arms faster, kick harder” was always the response I’d get from an old masters coach many years ago. So happy that my current coach is up-to-date on all new swim techniques. Now as a disabled swimmer (car accident) speed is not necessarily my goal even competing in local and national Senior games, but the more I heed coach’s feedback and concentrate on technique and correct body position, speed automatically improves. Also less pain anywhere in my body when I follow his advice.

I agree with all of that except for the part about not kicking. Yes, kicking takes up a lot of energy. But it also allows you to ride higher in the water, which makes you more efficient. There's a reason why kids and college teams do a lot of kick sets. If you're a long distance swimmer, then yes, a two-beat kick is great. But if you're a sprinter, or even middle-distance, then yes, you need to kick. And train for it.

This fits into a couple of your "bad advise" categories. Last year I overheard a local pool coach tell the swimmers "just swim faster!" This lead to a lot of them shortening their stroke (decreasing DPS) or kicking harder. causing sinking. They didn't swim faster.

If you want to go fast you still have to move your arms fast. that’s not to say dps and stroke count isn’t important, but how fast your stroke rate is, is directly related to your swim time: swim time=stroke rate x stroke count.

I think that the rate of kicking (more or less) depends on many factors such as distance, technique (of the leg work), tension in the legs' muscles, swimmer's time of practice (is he/she a beginner or not), general conditioning e.t.c sSo telling somebody "to kick less is to swim faster", not to consider what I wrote above is simply a big mistake! Especially from a swimming coach🤔🤔

Kicking harder can make your feet sink lower???? I would like an explanation of that please. For sure, there are huge differences between swimming the 50 meter freestyle sprint and a 1500 meter or longer swim. One is kicking. The other is stroke rate. Most of your swim mechanics seem to be aimed at distance swimming. As for breathing, breathe when you need to. For me, that is every other stroke. I have never been able to swim freestyle breathing every third stroke for more than 100 yards. I run out of oxygen if I try. Some distance swimmers will swim in a 2, 2, 3 pattern like Ariarne Titmus. I do breathe on one side for one length, and the other for the next. Doesn't hurt to be able to breathe on either side. Not sure what the breathing pattern is for marathon type swimmers. If you start running low on oxygen, it is pretty much impossible to catch back up to that level.

I think a lot of people either don’t know how to swim or don’t swim right. I see this in the pool checking out people from 6 to 76. I am glad this channel, TalentsNSkills, and Effortless Swimming are helping me to learn how to swim the right way. I do practice bilateral breathing every 9/7/5/3. However unilateral breathing 4/2 is easier and faster no matter which side I choose.

1.30 "you'll swim faster if you don't use your legs at all" - maybe a bit of overstatement here, though I have seen distance swimmers use very little leg kick. I've often wondered how fast they could go with no leg kick (perhaps just a float). E.g. what time could Finke or Ledecky swim 1500 this way??

@hudsonbakke8836
@hudsonbakke8836 9 дней назад
While overworking your legs definitely isn't ideal, I disagree that not kicking at all is any better. This may be the case for distance freestyle, which usually has a very understated kick anyways, but for literally anything else, kicking is extremely important, and even sloppy inefficient kicking is better than no kicking at all. For flutter kick you mainly want to focus on a lot of relatively small kicks with very high tempo, kicking just below the surface of the water where you get the most resistance, and therefore power. Dolphin kick is all about full body undulation, and the kick should literally be a wave propagating through your entire body like a worm. If you try to swim butterfly, or even a 100 free or 100 back without kicking at all, I guarantee it'll be slower than if you do kick.

For some of these, it depends on what the swimmer is doing. If they already have very efficient strokes and good technique but they're moving like a snail compared to everyone else that does twice as many strokes in the same amount of time then improving the turn over rate could actually help. It is possible a swimmer is just actually moving very slowly. If they have the physical ability to breathe to both sides and simply just prefer one side over the other then that is fine. But if the reason they don't like to breathe to the other side is not simply a personal preference but is due to an imbalance in technique (for example, not rotating to the other side) then that needs to be addressed rather than just telling the swimmer it is fine.

I've been told much of what’s in the video by my team mate speed demons - former college and high school swimmers, of which I was not. (I was serving in the Marine Corps while they were in college swimming): kick more; move your arms faster; do bi-lateral breathing; one day a week coach is really big on practcing 3,5,7 breathing ..... I can do this if I swim slowly and use paddles, but she said that won't help me; One day a week coach also told me to look forward at 45 degree angle in free style. For one, that hurts my neck. I thought I was supposed to look DOWN. ??? She said I was creating drag. Is is ok to use equiptment for drills? Otherwise, it takes me a lot longer to get through the entire practice before our time is up.
@JokerScribe
@JokerScribe 11 месяцев назад
Some lengths bi-laterally are good to practice. In fact, it is probably a good idea if you are doing open water swimming to be strengthening both sides. But that could be doing 10 lengths a session bi-latterally. Then doing 10 breathing on the left. Then 10 breathing on the right. I also don't believe in this one side is stronger, that is all down to schooling of only training the right hand as they wanted it to be uniform in the olden days. Anyone can learn to write with both sides. :) Believe in yourself JUbee. :)

For sure get into the habit of looking straight down at the pool floor. If you notice, the top of your head is a lot less surface area creating drag than the full face. And less neck pain is definitely a bonus! I'd only ever look forward for a moment to check for the distance from another swimmer/the wall in front. Hope this helps!

@@randawg357 exactly! And that’s the only time I look up as well. I don’t understand why the coach told me to look up at 45 degree angle “because I was creating drag”. If Miyagi from karate kid taught swimming the best advice I've heard from you was putting my arms on the deep end of the pool side and get the idea of the catch with the diamond shape. Then I got back in the water and could feel the high elbow position...so easier for people to learn that than talking about high elbow catch. Can you make an episode 'If Miyagi taught swimming!' And actually show that with the arms on the side of the pool. Best in the deep end.

Same! When I pull, with paddles and buoy I'm faster than the next lane up. They have tried to figure out why in order to help me speed up without paddles/pulling. @@JubeeBijou the paddles are nice to feel the grab 🤭 but I like to change inbetween: sometimes pull buoy, paddles, both, then nothing at all. My husband gives me some nice workouts, so I am not bored. People say they get bored, and I always say that you need a workout. You check your technique, you focus on one thing, and you already did 1h of swimming😅 I really want to improve my leg coordination or to kick better, like this smooth wavey motion the pros do… but yes, kicking harder makes you so tired. When I focus really hard on gliding and on my arms, I get faster. In the end, I am just happy to be able to crawl better. When I started I was at 2:45/100m and the 25m distance was a pain (breathing panic), but now 2:20/100m and 500m with no break inbetween in a 50m pool, 2000m in less than 1h. Totally happy. 😊

@@JubeeBijou and do you have time to go and have some extra sessions on your own? Like in a public pool? Maybe after a while you can collect some old trainings and mix up one for yourself for your extra session. My husband always gives me some leg exercises, but sometimes I am too lazy 😅 (but the leg part is never more than 200m) What I like to do at the beginnkng of my workout: Easy warm up (100m whatever I like) 100m crawl 100m paddles (focus in technique) 100m pull buoy (same) 100m both (same) Then 200-300m without props and focus I really like the small improvement I get for this short moment. Another thing that helps me: I ask him if he can watch me under water for 50m and see what I (still) do wrong, that helped a lot too. Maybe if you could ask one of your mates? I have to say that improvements in swimming took for me a long time, like 1 year, but I was very patient. The one thing that kept me very motivated was my resting heart beat: it decreased after 3 months (2x week, 1h per session) and I could never achieve this with running. Rooting for you!!!👏👏👏👏
