Worst thing about being a mountain biker is working 6 days a week in a manual job then riding after work. And having to wake up early on your only day off to hit a bike park and always being tired. But it is well worth it. Also the cost of laundry capsules to clean ur kit.

tom scholfield capsuales are crap and they dont work over 37 degrees also the mud brakes your machine so u should steep it then buy a thing that spins it around realy fast to dry it then put it on the line if its ur riding kit u shouldnt worry if it smells bad more that its dry and clean or you can put a bit of powder when u ateep them

Just like riding in central Japan, mud rain and more rain and mud. But the worse, absolutely worst is spider season. September October the orb spiders are full grown, I've seen them stretching their webs across 4 meters of trail. When going down and you slam into one of these you keep on going in a manly fashion or freak out and crash. Going up and you jump off your bike squealing, spit'n trying to get these things off. They hunker down in the crevasses of your helmet and you get home and they crawl out over your face or crawl down your back. Mud and rain, no problem...it's spider season I could do without!

I have a trail nearby that people occasionally walk their dogs on, but it also has a couple of nice downhill sections. Last season I almost monster trucked a lady walking her Chihuahua in a blind turn on my Giant Glory. I even got it on the a GoPro.

Dog💩 is the absolute worst... especially if you don't notice it till the bike goes back in the car or in the house. There's laws and fines for people who don't pick up after their dogs on the pavement... why not on the trails.

We had a big male black bear visiting the trails here last year and shitting all over the place , I didn't realize I biked through it until I put my bike in the car ...It was all over the wheels , peddles and my shorts , I had to shampoo the car..lol

Yeah it’s the worst! Dog owners, if your dog drops their scat directly in the middle of a trail...PLEASE pick it up or at least move it. Better yet, shoot for getting a dog that has some sense and does their business off the trail.

I understand people not picking up after their dogs on the trail (they are in the woods) but... what I'll never understand is why they don't keep their dog off to the side so it doesn't poop in the MIDDLE of the trail. Dog crap off to the side is easier to avoid, it's dog poo in the middle of the best line that gets on your bike or you. BTW I love dogs, but lets face it, some dog owners are less smarter than their pets...

My parents bought me a Walmart mountain bike. I learned how to ride on that thing. Taught myself a lot of tricks using that bike. I appreciated the hell out of that bike because my parents, who are not rich people, bought it for me because I wanted a bike. I didn't cry and complain that it's not a "real bike". I rode the hell out of it and got myself a proper bike after I got my first job.

If it has two wheels and a drive train the its a bike. Me and my mates grew up on those cheap bikes and they are the ideal starting point for hundreds of people. If your talents extend that far beyond a walmart bike then you should have told your parents to just save the cash longer and get you a slightly better bike.

That dog poo face was pretty much spot on! However in muddy conditions you're at least a bit lucky when you hit that dog bomb. There's always a puddle near to sink your tire into and clean it. Well, not really cleaning it, but replacing poo with mud is a good thing!

Just got back into Riding, after a 36 year break back when the closest thing to an MTB was a BMX bike. We were kids, so we carried no tools & I remember us laboring to get up this mountain with a fast firebreak we loved using only to get a flat right when we got to the top & to have your heart crushed over having to walk your bike down with screams of joy bellowing in the distance as your buddies disappear in a cloud of dust & dirt.

I reserve my mountain bike for the beach, my adventure bike has mud guards and they help. I needed to cut the front fender so my foot wouldn't bang it during technical riding, but the splash doesn't go much higher than the bottom bracket and the down-tube is flared. The butt stays dry too, very important this time of the year.

I have had the WORST thing happen to me...... On a fast slippery downhill section a big hornet flies into the front vent of your helmet and gets caught in your hair. Too fast to stop and get it out, too bumpy to ride 1 handed. Just ride and prey

I can solve these problems! The mud: move to a place with a bit of a drier climate ( such as nc ) the dog poo:make your own private trail. The punctures: get thicker tires.

I also hate at the winter biking, i spend a lot time with the prepare, then i am sure, if everything is dry, my bike will be dirty within 10m. Then cleaning... so the enjoyable part is much shorter, than the whole process. The spring is coming :)

Quick tip for dog poo: find a grass patch, lock up your wheel, then slide the wheel across the grass. The poo should then come off :)

If fogging of goggles is a problem, try and find Airblaster Air Goggles (aka airgogs). They do not fog. I run hot and sweaty snowboarding and on bikes and these are the only gogs that have never fogged for me.

I'm a mild faffer, and i've dealt with dog poo even on sidewalks (yes, there are still people who allow it). The faffing is restricted to tire pressure, aligning the front wheel with the stem, and setting pressures for the trail (can't forget the bolt and cable check). IMO, the best way to remove the dog mine is to find either a dry, coarse sandy spot, or some gravel. then, you put the part with the mine stuck to it on the ground, poo and all, while holding the other side of the tire. Now, just drive the tire forward if it's sand, or push it forward if its gravel, while maintaining enough pressure to make the rocks kinda roll underneath. you want them to slide just a tiny bit. This saves the rider from a nice face to poo encounter, avoids even risking touching it (god knows what kind of parasite eggs/larvae have been laid in it), and its over with much faster, letting you continue to enjoy your ride. PS: neither method will work completely, so also spin the tire in the grass as if you were trying to get it off your shoe. this is good enough to remove any residual remains.

Living in Pittsburgh, you learn from the old coggers. You keep a shower and washer in the basement with a basement entrance! I also keep a pump pressure washer in the car. Everyone makes fun of me for always carrying a pretty good backpack of tools, tires, first aid. BUT- I am the guy who stresses about forgetting to lock the door to the car!

I don't do this hobby, hell I don't even own a bike. But this channel is just so good. Gonna get a fatbike this june and get into shape. Might have a go with a friend in the woods

So true. Covered in mud and God knows what else. Takes longer to clean your kit afterwards than the whole ride and getting to the trail and back. But first you have to rinse your clothes off in the shower before actually washing anything else.

so true! last week for an after work ride i spent overall 2-3 hours preparing/packing/driving there and back, rode 1and 1/2 hour, then cleaning was another hour...dammnn

The smell is so true, I’ve narrowed my down to my helmet’s cushions. 🤢 I don’t know if it’s my many layers of sweat or just chemicals they’re made of. Plus punctures, my seem to happen as soon as I start enjoying my ride! So true! And yes the mud everywhere. That’s why I bring a change of clothes and have installed a pressurized tank with water in my truck to be able to at least wash off the loose dirt.

Hahaha i had yesterday a ride like this one! But with lot of ice on the top to (it was so slippery that i crashed 4 times and my friend even more).

Forgot my water bottles in my car the other day. I had a great first half of my ride until I stopped for a water break. The second half was pretty miserable as I got increasingly thirsty, but there was nothing for it but to keep going until I got back to the parking lot.
