The military branches clearly don't realize just how badly this behavior harms their chances of getting people to enlist once it comes into the publics view

People wonder why a lot of people get out. People don’t quit shitty jobs, they quit shitty leadership. If you truly cared for the people under you, retention would not be like it is.

How does one continue to have faith in an organization that treats people this way?

Arnett has been a friend since before all of this bull shit. She is an amazing woman and a hell of a Marine. She also coached girls sports on Oki and is well loved by both those she coached for and their parents. It's good to see her getting more main stream attention. My whole stint, I was told "We want thinkers not robots" But everytime you stepped outside the box you got punished.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lance Corporal Arnett for an interview before she was incarcerated. It's quite an unfortunate that all the retaliatory actions were taken against her - she was an exemplary example of a Marine. She was my assistant soccer coach during one of numerous seasons she volunteered as a coach and mentor. Keep in mind, while volunteering as a Youth Sports Coach, individuals are often required to interact, lead and mentor children of Senior Enlisted and Commissioned Officers. The parents, of some of these children, were the ones seeking to punish LCpl Arnett. One punishment they were able to levy on her: they contacted the Youth Sports Program director and informed them that [she] was not allowed to Coach any team(s) or individuals due to legal actions. Imagine being someone so determined and invested in the youth mentorship program(s) that anywhere you went, you were immediately recognized by the children of these senior service members. Imagine them taking all of that away. I remember during our interview she choked up and broke down a little while describing this. Thanks for covering this, AC. I personally apologized to Kat for not being able to provide a strong enough platform for her story to be heard but I'm glad it's out there. I was LE in USAF and when I felt something wasn't right. I advised them to hire a civilian defense well-versed in UCMJ.

Whenever I’m introduced to new troops, I always tell them this: “There’s two types of leadership in the military: the ones who will stick their neck out for you, and the ones who will slit your throat the moment you stick out yours. Learn them fast and move accordingly.” Be safe out there.

Every officer and NCO involved in this needs to be court martialed. If they're arrogant enough to do this to her, they've done it to others and gotten away with it.

feel for her, been in a similar situation back when i was in the army, so here's sort of a short version. sometimes doing the right thing and standing up for yourself is no easy thing. when everything was over my commander came into the mess hall were i was eating, noticed me, and asked to sit with me, you pretty much can't say no so. he told me he knew the whole time i was innocent and he did it just to make an example of me so everyone else wouldn't question him. one good thing came out of my court martial, everyone got to watch the trial at my request and all the seasoned people who were considering reenlisting had changed their minds. many came up to me when the trial was over, shook my hand, and told me they wouldn't re-up seeing what the new army was becoming and they were not happy with it, so the commander pretty much after all had made part of my case for me for what that's worth.

This is why I left the Army. You know, I talked a soldier out of killing himself while on watch in Afghanistan. But because I didn't leave my post or call for someone to remove him from his post (leaving me alone on the wire in case we get attacked), I was awakened to find out my chain was looking into charging me. Instead, they just beat me down until I was done with the military. Then they had the nerve to ask if I wanted to pay $75 for an award plaque at the end of the tour, something all the other NCOs were kicking in for. I told them that was a month's worth of beer money, and I personally didn't need a self-POB, I can look myself in the mirror just fine without having to question if I did the right thing. They didn't like my attitude.

Toxic leadership drove me out. During a career planner exit interview the Sgt asked me why I want to leave I said toxic leadership and then she proceed to agree with me and then tell me how people should respect her because of her rank and how she deserves the respect no matter what ……… yep she proved my point

I’m a police officer as well, and that was actually a pretty good explanation of The Fruit of the Poisonous Tree doctrine. Not really much room for it to be picked apart.

Everytime I think about going back in, I just remind myself about toxic leadership, the Afghanistan disaster, and the fact that Principal Skinner would rather put up with Bart Simpsons chaos than reenlist for 1 term or even a day.

This goes beyond reprehensible or incompetent behavior, it is down right malicious, malignant, maleficence and tyrannical. The leadership should be NAMED and exposed for what they really are, petty, tin-plated, vindictive oath breakers.

Imagine if social media wasn't around no one would know about this and she would still be sitting in the brig.

The middle of the story was the best part, I could see where it was going and it was building towards her hitting them with the "No, I don't think I will" not once but TWICE. That woman has bigger ball than all her leadership combined.

Went through a PG rated version of this with my CO. The CO even replaced our 1st Sgt. for sticking up for me. Luckily, they couldn't replace my military lawyer. they finally just gave me my discharge papers and sent me on my way. I heard later that my old CO got busted back to Major after this whole ordeal. As proud as he was about that silver oakleaf, it made my decade to know he got busted down because of me, and there was nothing else he could do to me about it.

I had something Similar happen to a Troop of Mine in the 101st back in Late 90's. This E4 was constantly getting a No Pay Due and had been on Station for more than a Year. After Numerous Trips to Finance to get the Pay he Deserved only to Get another NO Pay Due, So the NCO's Coughed up Money to pay this E4 and the Next payday the Same thing NO Pay Due, Damnit we went up and down the Chain trying to get this Corrected. One day a Vehicle Showed up and Wouldn't you know it, It was his Congressman from his State with a Few other People, He asked to see the Soldier and the Command. As Anuses Puckered the E4 talked with him, He thanked the NCO Corps for trying to help, He Produced Paperwork that Relieves the E4 from his Contract and He is to Receive his Bonuses and any other Monies owed to Him and He is Coming with Me to Finance and then He will be Flying Home. I about Shiiat my pants, Shook the E4's hand and told him to be cool. He thanked me and Away he went. I remember you Barry..

As a vet who’s seen his unit shut down for “widespread corruption”… nothing surprises me

I was never in the military but I am in the Fire Service. Our Chief gathered all of us one day and said, “Listen guys, they are going to force the shot. There’s nothing that I can do about it at this point.” We all stood up and said once they do that we are all quitting. Every single fireman signed a petition stating that. We never heard another peep.

For all my brothers and sisters that left the military over this - I love you for your true honor!!

I was denied promotion, schools, (even those within and supported by my own BN), and threatened with UCMJ and jail time over the course of 2+ years for submitting a religious exemption for the jab. And my CSM wonders why I'm getting out....🤣

Thanks for raising awareness for this. I got out June of 2020, literally just before this madness started. I had a good command, and excellent staff NCOs, but I’ve heard plenty about how toxic Marine Corps leadership can get. glad I didn’t reenlist after everything I’ve been hearing over the last couple of years.

I was a 4421, Legal Services Specialist, in my beloved Corps. My lawyers would have eaten this case up. They would (Defense side) would be fighting for this case. Just on the Merits you mentioned, the SPCM would likely get a conviction (they can indict and convict a ham sandwich) but on appeal, C.A.A.F. would destroy this case. This needs to be brought to light, thank you sir.

She needs to be immediately promoted and be held as an example of leadership and courage.

The phone call sounded like an Hostage phone call

This rings so close to home. Back in the 2000's I was stationed in Okinawa, there was an Okinawa Japan liberty card policy not letting lower enlisted off-base after midnight (Cinderella liberty if you will) when you had your red card and forced to come back on base by midnight; after 3 months of being on island you were to be given your gold card as long as you had no violations and no other disciplinary issues. My unit said, screw the policy and those in charge, we're going to be more restrictive and never allow anyone their gold card. After I was there a year and a half without issues, the commanding general of 3rd Marine Division said: hey people in charge of this unit not following my standing orders, get your sh*t together and issue the deserving marines their gold cards like everyone else or you'll be back to being a butter-bar... They finally gave in kicking and screaming that they couldn't just punish our unit because they felt like it anymore. Boy were they not happy we were allowed the same freedoms as every other unit around and they let us know it.

The fact that this has gone to this point tells me no one in that comand is capable of being a dutiful officer. Complete and utter incompetence. Absolutely worthless people.

And folks wonder why kids don't want to serve these days. It isn't just an Xbox or video games. I specifically begged my kid to not sign a dotted line that I signed.

I was in the Marine Corps, also a Lance corporal, 2018-2022. I was with 3/11 India in 29 Palms. I also refused the vaccine. I was very blessed to have direct leadership who gave a genuine shit about me. But our Medical Officers, Battalion SgtMaj, Battalion CO, and so on and so fourth, essentially threatened those of us who stood our ground with court martial, NJP, dishonorable discharges, and more. And now they want me to come back. Strange.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a non MX person be so dedicated to doing her job and ensuring it gets done. She is literally the embodiment of dedication to duty and yet she is punished for it. If this continues we will lose the next war against an adversary with actual capabilities.

Refusing to follow unlawful orders AND using the “I was just doing my job” defense. I never thought that would be a combination. This woman is an inspiration.

She was unceremoniously discharged from the USMC with a General under Honerable Conditions. They took her off post and kicked her out of the car at a gas station with nothing but the uniform on her back. Her property and the rest of her uniforms were not taken with her to California. Nor was her cell phone, her car, her driver's license, her wallet, debit card/atm card....in city where she had no friends or family and with not even a dime in money to sustain her life. Though she was in confinement, she was never given a court martial nor a Page 11 or whatever the USMC equivalent of an Article 15 is. So, she had to have been accruing pay the entire time as the only way to forfiet anyone's pay is through some sort of official proceedings and judgment. If her commander had given her a field grade judgment she could only have 1/2 pay forfieted for up to two months and be given extra duty for up to three months. But would not have been arrested. Upon her aquiring money enough to purchase her own ticket back to Japan, she flew from the US and upon landing at the airport, made her way back to the naval airbase she had worked at...at 0230...and walked right up to the front gate and requested admission on to the base so she could return to work. She was arrested again and handed over to the Japanese police who put her in pretrial confinement while she awaited the Japanese prosecution team's decision on what to do about the situation. On the 27th of December the Japanese authorities released her and she left Japan. I am only guessing that the Japanese authorities told her they would not press charges if she agreed to leave Japan and not return to the naval air station. Though, again, that is what I infer from the release. The biggest issue I see is what she did to the station commander. She publicly called him out several times for not standing with her and others seeking religious exemptions as he was known to espouse his Roman Catholicism as she is a devout catholic herself. He is in big trouble as are those who classified her as level 4 + or whatever the military uses as classification scale to denote a special management inmate due to them being violent towards staff or an extreme escape risk. It appears that this was done to take away her religious practice as she had, when possible, received mass daily until her first incarnation in Japan and she had made many complaints about the fact that her commander had ordered her not be allowed any religious freedom while in custody. What a dick move. The fact that they kept her personal property and ensured nothing she would need to transition from the Marines once the situation was concluded is beyond acceptable behavior. But, then again, brandon did this so he will do nothing to make this right.

The importance of this case can't be overlooked, I'm really glad it's being made public and certainly hope any similar stories are brought to light, too. It was of great concern people losing their military career for not complying with a glorified flu shot with non-disclosed side effects. People were losing their minds and saying you should DIE if you didn't get the pokey poke. I hate she's the one carrying the punishment for this madness but we can only hope what she's going through will make serious changes. Our military and civilian justice systems have been sinking lower and lower into deplorable levels and this sort of immoral hoop jumping to get someone charged and punished has left logic and the Constitution in the mud. Let's keep this story public!

As a marine that was stationed in Japan during the Covid, it got very toxic. Ninja punches(NJP’s), daily white glove inspections, blatant hypocrisy, HIPPA violations, slander (CWO>Cpl), favoritism. That is why I didn’t reenlist.

I spent most of my adult life in the military, 1979-2013 and the military did great things for me, what I was taught, what was instilled in me, a lifetime of adventures but I can not in good faith recommend anyone joining the military at this time.

Love the concept of the E-4 Mafia. I was a Lance Corporal for most of my "career". I can not possible explain to a civilian how amazingly courageous this Marine was by her standing up for her rights. Every single person in the chain of command above her demonstrated that they are morally neutered by their refusal to support her.

Funny thing is......I believe she's actually past her ETS date too, by this point. They totally could've just dropped everything and let her out, just like they usually do for most folks they dont want to do legal paperwork to waste their time. So the fact her leadership went out of their way to file all this paperwork, tells quite a lot.

i had to stand witness to an NJP in okinawa and the accused brought in several people to collaborate his story and the command still found him guilty. the military justice system is FUBAR.

Being in IT I would like to understand how she was charged with forgery with her digital signature. The digital signature would have to be revoked and she would have to use a different digital signature for all of that to be considered forgery. Someone should explain that to a lawyer so they can understand how digital signatures work, and why they prevent forgery.

A dropped charge is not the same as something being found unconstitutional or having been against the law. When the court said that the blanket denial is unconstitutional, then everything that came from that is no longer valid. Essentially, as you explained, "Fruit from the Poisonous Tree". Something being against the law would like an officer searching your home without a warrant and having no justification for a warrantless search or exigent circumstances. However, she was charged with forgery, when she decided to say no and I'm not going anywhere, they charged her with missing movement and failure to obey a lawful order (the UCMJ article is does state direct order as some might think). Because they didn't have enough to charge her for the forgery, because of the evidence, they dropped the forgery charge. The fruit of the poisonous tree does not apply. As the other charges were made within the scope of the law, and the previous charge wasn't considered unconstitutional. Meaning, that does NOT stop or drop any other charges, just means that they believe they have enough evidence to continue. With that, this sounds kind of like another story. Navy Seal Chief Petty Officer Eddie Gallagher. Did they need to put her in the brig? No. Does Navy regulations allow it? Yes. Shit, had she been on a ship, they could've put her on a bread and water diet. With all that, I am excited to hear about an actual troop standing up for orders that are wrong and/or immoral.

Toxic leadership is huge. They all need to be relieved, fired and drummed out of the service with a dishonorable discharge.

Worst of all, nothing will happen to most of the higher-ups responsible.

How is the document a forgery? One, it's the same document used last time, with an updated date. Two, LCpls don't just walk into their Commander's office and say "What is is, Sir? Sign this for me." Things requiring the Commander's signature are sent through the chain, and there are a lot of stops between a LCpl, and a Commander, any one of which could have kicked it back and said "No, this is no good, here's why, fix it." But they didn't, they forwarded it to the Commander, who then approved it. That's not a forgery, that's a document sent through the chain, and approved by the Commander. Something that happens every day. You're absolutely right, Drill, this whole thing was nothing more than her command saying "You have the rights we SAY you have, peasant. And don't any of the rest of you EVER forget that!"

Toxic leadership has progressively gotten worse over the past roughly 23 years in the Army, Marine Corps and Navy. The Air Force seems to been affected less than the other three but hasn’t been completely immune from it. I’ve served in both the Army and USMC since 9/11, but have worked with all in a joint environment. The military needs to change their paradigm and re-educate leaders on their responsibilities and legal authority.

And they wonder why retention rates and recruiting rates are so low. This is appalling and the worst part is knowing that she will never get the Justice she deserves and the command will never be held accountable. Corruption from the top down.

I read a short story in college called Billy Budd. It was about how the Navy brass screwed over an enlisted man. Set in 18th century. This scenario is not new.

Years ago there was a situation in the San Antonio area that had AF OSI rushing across the busy city to a possible hostage situation. The lead agent was given an article 15 by his commander for using lights to get the team across the congested city. However, he also received a commendation (not from commander) for his quick response. My husband suggested he mat both letters in the same frame and hang it in his office. *Potential hostage taker decided to stop living before OSI arrived.

I can’t confirm this because of hipaa but im 90% certain she was one of the patients I attended in the hospital. If this video dropped a couple days sooner I would’ve not only recognized her but probably showed her this video. Small world.

If in fact she had committed forgery as they claimed and her superiors allowed her to continue her duties they should be held accountable and charge with accessory after the fact. And every document she filled out, submitted, and filed would need to be reviewed and resubmitted. Also her commanding officer and those who approved her charges and punishment need to be removed from command for if nothing else loss of confidence in their abilities to command.

I think of stuff like this whenever I vaguely consider joining the military.

Can confirm stuff like this is happening in just about every unit. I'm a commissioned officer in the Army and am living my own version of this. Refused the jab, got a target on my back, command was watering at the mouth to separate me. Once they were told they couldn't all of the sudden charges of bullying a subordinate that I have never met popped up.... and after the first IO wrote up a drafted F&R saying I didn't bully the soldier.... she was replaced with a second IO that wrote a F&R that said I did... all of this approved with 0 evidence (a preponderance is needed) and signed with approval from the CG. Same CG who tried everything to kick me out for the jab. Whats funny is that all of this has put my REFRAD on hold and is actually keeping me in the Army longer! Justice? No... we don't issue that here in the Army.
