But the stupid plastic timing and balance chain guides.... Oil soaked and crumble,No better than rubber belt. Still bends all valves when they go. Plus chev press fit the timing reluctor wheels onto the back end of the cams, when its hot and the cams come to a hard stop hitting the piston the reluctor wheel spins just enough not to run, gotta replace those too...

It has over 130,000 km’s on it and the engine is still in good condition also, the mechanic was shocked at the excellent condition of such an old car, the only thing I needed to change was the back right bearing. I guess it helped that my grandma is a very cautious driver, and she brought the car in for checkups multiple times a year. I have a 2008 Cobalt LT - got it dirt cheap with about 100k miles like the one in this video. Done some mods to dress it up and improve the performance a bit. Looks a lot better than a Corolla now. The Ecotek engine is built like a tank too. Is it a perfect car? Nah, rattles over bumps, drum brakes in the back are a pain, electronics needed work, but I made the right choice in picking it up. Starts up every time, picks up quick, runs at normal temps, no big issues anywhere. Great car for now :)
@kcg795
@kcg795 4 года назад
Yeah, the front end's not perfect. Had to replace my anti-sway bar end links when I was getting rattles. The new ones I put on are shorter, but they work just fine. Went ahead and replaced the anti-sway bar bushings too. Then another rattle showed up and one of the lower control arm bushings was bad. Replaced both control arms that came with all new bushings and ball joints. Not long after that, I had to replace the ball joint on one of them. Now it goes in for alignment on Thursday. One electrical issue I did have recently was the reverse lights fuse blowing. Traced it to the wiring harness near the fuse box where it was rubbing against the threaded end of a bolt on the engine and wore the wire loom through and wore through the wire going to the reverse lights. Didn't take me long to find that. Just had to tape it up. With 243,000 miles, I do believe I got my money's worth. I paid almost $10,000 for mine back in July of 2010. So I've had the car for almost 10 years now. Whenever I have to replace anything, it seems like that part is extremely inexpensive and the car itself is fairly easy to work on. I've learned to stay the hell away from AC Delco as well. So far, Moog's been pretty good for replacing my front end parts.

I have the successor model to the Cobalt... a 2014 Cruze. I bought my car when it was 3 years old (41,600 miles on it) and I've had no major problems with it. I've only had to do some engine maintenance in the time I've had my car, but the cost of maintaining a car comes with owning it. I've learned that the reliability of a car depends on how well it's been maintained and driven. I've kept up on routine maintenance such as regular oil changes and even had the transmission oil changed when it was recommended by the manufacturer. I also don't drive my car like a race car like most people do. Overall, my car has been very reliable and I've been happy with it so far.

She lost a brake line during the trip but it wasn’t bad to get fixed. i live in central illinois so the salt here is hell. The car is just now hesitating on acceleration in lower gears. Dunno when any fuel filters or pumps were fixed, but i’ll definitely get em fixed. The car was $1600 originally(free from my boss), we put another $1600 with crap shocks about 8 months later. a coil or something is cracked atm, and the drums are a little rusted it seems(when it’s wet or humid and has been sittin overnight, it grinds like there’s rust in the drums. scotty says new wd-40) so other than that stuff. i just do basic maintenance and use some fuel and oil additives(and supertech oil, it’s great), ethanol free gas when i can, and she’s doing good. I do have some lean codes still showing up, but i suspect that’s the hesitation. Gonna check the fuel filter tmrw and maybe call a mechanic for it if that doesn’t help

I had a 2009 Chev HHR, which was a cobalt with a different body. It functioned well except when the Body Control Module would go crazy. You know: Service this, service that, throttle mapping would go soft, etc. It was caused by corrosion on the electrical plug to the BCM. That problem is all over the internet, but Chevrolet Corporate denies the problem exists. I totaled it. Good riddance. My mother died back in '87. She had a Plymouth Caravelle (Super K). We bought it from her estate. We worked it hard (towing our tent trailer, etc.). Had it 13 years. Sold it. It had cleared 250,000 miles last we heard years ago. It had the Chrysler 2.2 engine. Minimal rust. Comfortable. The Super K was superior to the K, clearly.

We bought the same car in 2009, wife drove it for years and now daughter drives it. 116,000 miles. Only repairs to date. Battery, tires and front brakes. No other problems ever, lived outside in Wisconsin winters, and has always started no matter how cold outside. Does Scotty get a kickback every time he bashes GM and puts Toyota on a pedistal.

How can the inspection sticker be 15 years old if the car's a 2010?

Its most likely a 2005, belonged to a military person who had orders outside Texas and just kept up with the registration and not have to come back here for the inspection. Couldnt be a sticker from another car, the inspection sticker was (no longer used) designed to peel apart if tampered with...i know cause i used to have to do that when i served, and then when i was a state inspector after my service time.

the difference between a cobalt and a corolla is the corolla msrp is fixed (no/very little discounts). the cobalt msrp is inflated to match the corolla but can be discounted 3, 4 or 5 thousand dollars if you're willing to haggle with the dealer.

@Scotty Kilmer . I’m sorry sir but I bought my Chevy cobalt 2009 for 15000 in 2010 and now I have 160000 miles . Overall the car is definitely worth the price to buy. I replaced clutch plate and now I’m replacing the ac system myself. It’s an excellent car if you take care of it.

When we were kids (early 20's maybe 2006) friend of mine had an 83 Pontiac Bonneville station wagon with the 305, carburated. He daily drove that thing for like 2 years! Exhaust hanging on by a thread, sounded like a monster truck lol. Sometimes the oldies can cling to life for a bit. Those were fun days!

I own a 2006 Cobalt SS . Basically the same but slightly more hp (170 ish). 2 things I dont like is it has a bad turning radius, but the rear view is brutally dangerous and after 2 years I still have trouble paralell parking it because it is hard to judge the back end. Overall has been a good car and has 340K kilometers on it. Very dependable.

I will always live by this. If you take care of the car, it will take care of you. I got a 2009 Chevy Cobalt SS TC Sedan with 304k miles and only just now got my first check engine light for a random misfire after a valve cover gasket job. Take care of your car. And please clean it. Thanks

I liked the Cavaliers, had 2, better than the Cobalt. Trunk lid let me fit my larger cooler in the Cavalier and the Cavalier chassis seemed built tuffer. Cobalt has needed lower control arm bushings under 80k miles. All have been cheap to own and operate but I twist my own wrenches as much as possible.

If the owner sells that car for $500 - $1000 like Scotty says, that owner is getting ripped off. That car, in good condition, can go for $2,250 - $4,250. $500 is scrap metal money.
