Tilly ‪@tillysshelf‬ and I are reading and chatting about a contemporary novel each month in 2024. The Wren, The Wren by Anne Enright was our February choice. It was published late August 2023 and is hitting some book prize shortlists now. In fact it is on the Women's Prize for Fiction longlist announced the same day we put this video up.
Our March book will be Happiness Falls by Angie Kim. Here’s the article I mentioned about her motivation in depicting a particular character:

It was lovely to do it in person not on zoom this time.

Always enjoy a Tilly/Ros chat! I read The Gathering years ago and enjoyed it but haven’t read anything by her since. Some great lines in this but yes, poetry in fiction can be risky.

I particularly enjoyed Actress her last book.

I love these dual reviews! It is funny how certain authors can so flawlessly capture different age ranges and experiences and others really struggle with it. The same thing with any different life experience other than age. "autopilot" i can feel that. Being a wonderful creator and a wonderful person/role model aren't even frequently the case and it's also such a hard thing to see as a loved one or a fan. From those excerpts it does seem like they're more of a moment writer. A book can be appealing but not perfect *nodnod* Can't wait to hear how the next book his. I'm apprehensive about it.

A moment writer is a great description. I have not heard that term before. And my goodness yes being a good artists does not mean likely to be a good person. Seems more the other way. I suppose a certain selfish focus helps many artists and creators.

I love hearing you discuss this novel together. I especially enjoyed your discussion of Carmel as a mother. I also struggled with Phil and his poetry. I do love Anne Enright, but this isn’t my favorite novel of hers. I remember being much more taken with The Gathering some years ago. But I loved your discussion! Thank you for doing this!😊

I don’t think Anne Enright is for me but I really enjoyed this discussion. Love the idea of looking at someone from a lovely distance when you’re interrupted from reading!
