Developmental biologist here: If you take an advanced chick embryo from the egg, it will still be conected from his abdomen to the yolk/viletine membrane. A chick close to hatching, without the egg, looks just like that. A hanging sac connected to his "belly"
@GooTheMighty Unfortunately, my DS3 lore knowledge is relatively lacking compared to other From games so idk if it was just "cool, gross", or what. The interesting thing is the knights dont seem to have a yolk sac, as well as having more "developed/adult" looking avian heads. So theres a definite reference there to "premature birth (hatching?)" or being misborn or something Perhaps someone who knows more about their lore will be able to explain it.
@@childofcascadia I can't speak too much on lore, but you can also view the knights as being "shelled" since they're covered in armor. Interestingly, the knights can then be seen as unborn? Despite the fact that as you said they have a more mature appearance. Then in a sense the adults are hunting the children, which would fit well in line with Ariandel's world of rot.
God, even by Dark Souls standards these things always stood out as absolutly misrable. Most of the Enemies at least no longer have a mind by the time we see them, but these ones seem mentally mostly intact, judging by them running away from death. What a wretched existence, no wonder they want to burn.
The atmosphere of ariandel is so good. I think the idea is that this is what it would be like to live without fire. I wonder if, because of gwyn, is there any instance in which anyone could live a happy and meaningful life in this universe? Light or dark?
@@samthepigman4069 Hollowing would still be a miserable state for all in a world without fire, and that includes humans in the painted world. Other life forms would be fine tho, just sick and deformed, highly dangerous and unpredictable, but hey at least they're not hollowing (maybe). Even if it's an illusion, everyone lived somewhat happy as sane humans in the age of fire, but that couldn't keep going without the entire world twisting and decaying on itself as we see in DS3.
@@zalabit927Hollowing means to become an empty husk of what once was there. Mindless and everliving. So who's to say, these unborn chicks aren't hollow or are even able to become hollow to begin with. Nevertheless, a truly tragic existence.
Many birds' young produce a "fecal sac" that makes removing waste easier for the parent. The corvian settlers strongly resemble nestlings with some occasional fledging (though it looks more like fungus or branches than feathers), it seems like part of their decay might be being stuck in adolescence?
Veterinarian here. It looks like a bird embryo. Chicks in the egg still have a big sac that provides nutrients while they are developing (thats your egg yolk). If you took a developing chick out of the egg when it was mostly but not fully ready to hatch, and then made and ran it thru a Fromsoft lens (giving it a sort of human body and making it gross), youd get this.
As an ex bird owner I am actually grateful to the biologists and vets in the comments. I thought their "tail" was a fecal sack before, realising it's the yolk somehow makes it less gross to look at for me
To me, it looks like fecal sacs stuck in their tail feathers, from the lack of a mother’s cleaning. Either that or the yolk is stuck to the hatchling, having hatched too early. Either way, the cause of the problem is the same; these poor things have no mothers to care for them while they’re helpless hatchlings. They are abandoned children, and whoever abandoned them or took their mothers away is the cause of their suffering.
I grew up on a farm, and this would happen to chickens very rarely, like twice ever for us. But basicly the egg gets caught up in their intestines and drags them out with the egg. They live for days and days if you don't just put them out of their misery, it sucks but no vet could do anything. But thats what it is.
What you probably saw was egg binding with prolapsed oviduct. Cuz eggs dont interact with or travel thru intestines. Its kind of like how a female mammal has a birth canal, a bird has its version, called an oviduct. Only its completely inside the body, and birds only have one opening they do all their 'lower part of the body' business with.
I do love when the community returns to showcasing and observing old games, and I recall hating when the big ones would puke. Cuz the noises are super nasty and, how much blood can one puke before dying
In Dark Souls 3's defense, the entire point of the game is that the endless cycle of rekindling the fire has led to a point where there is only decay and that further perpetuation of the cycle is just prolonging the inevitable at that point. Likewise, stagnation and rot have similarly corrupted the cycles of painted worlds to illustrate how grotesque the world of Dark Souls's reflection has become. There cannot be any more grace to be found among the miles of ruin that has built up, so likewise the design philosophy should revel in grotesque and disgusting designs, as there is no hope left for a brighter future.
fromsoft was too scared to bring back the crow demons from ds1 cause we horny so we got these things instead miyazaki was eating Balut for lunch and turned to one of his artist and said put this in the game
Genuine question. Someone has an explanation of why corvian people exist? I know that humanoid birds had appeared before on other games, but these guys feels... off.
I had just assumed that it was a thematic link to Velka: being Forlorn, they took on the aspect of their patron. Kind of like how Chaos worshipers in 40k mutate according to the deity they worship.
That's actually a pretty good question. The Corvians are quite likely descended from the Crow Demons; there's a clear line between them. The Corvians are obviously different in being smaller, sickly, weaker, but you start to see the resemblance when you see the Corvian Knights, who despite not having wings, are just as agile as their ancestors. Now, the funny thing is; People often proclaim the Crow Demons and Corvians were the result of Velka's worshippers, but here's the thing: Miyazaki stated that this was their " original concept". Not their current one. We actually do not know what they are in current canon. One clue given to us by Weaponsmith Ornifex( a Crow Demon in DS2) is that her people learned the art of soul transposition from " a great pale being". Otherwise, we have no actual information within canon sources of the Crow Demons' background, though her description opens some...interesting possibilities. Choice 1: They are beings cursed by Velka instead of being her worshippers. I say this because the human-faced Corvians seem to be tortured by their transformation, their wings bursting from their backs. That, and in Dark Souls 1, we find the Pardoner Set and Velka's Rapier on corpses in corridors that can only otherwise be accessed by Crow Demons, indicating they were killed by them. Choice 2: They are among the many results of Seath's experiments. Manscorpion Tark explains to us that he, along with his former mate Najka, were among a cast of beings created by a " master" defined by his jealousy and misery in life. He later calls this being " Writhing Ruin"; the same being from whom we take the Old Paledrake Soul after defeating the Duke's Dear Freja. In other words, Seath's soul. Whether directly or indirectly, Seath appears responsible for the creation of many inhuman species; the Piascas of DS1 are a more direct example. Ornifex's mention of a " great pale being" is the crux in this theory, with Seath being the one most likely being referenced and having such a pivotal role in her people's history, which may indicate his role in their creation.
I assumed that over time people bred with the crow demons from DS1, producing these neotenic, mostly human body with big bird head things. Kind of like how Sulyvahn is implied to be half witch tree, half...something else. Get a bunch of losers in one place that's cold so you all have to cuddle by the warm, cozy fireplace, add in some booze and...stuff happens.
Ds3 does such a good job of expressing this horrible oppressive post apocalyptic atmosphere. You can look at these guys and wonder what they were like before they were so deeply corrupted and negleticed. If they were normal humans who mutated or maybe a race of bird-human hybrids, and they devolved into these mindless husks. They clearly at some point had a level of sentience because they flock around an ancient looking village, which could have been their homes, or the homes of their ancestors.
The most wretched, despicable and miserable being in the series....they just want to die and move along to give birth/place to the next generation, but because of a selfish and manipulative woman they are doomed to rot away in a hell of undeath. Until the Ashen One releases them from their torment, that is
Firstly, I am saddened by 2 things - that we did not receive the armor of the Raven Knights, and that we did not receive the shadow set from DS2 even in the DLC to DS3, although it would look perfect as the armor of the Londor Shadows, or Londor Knights, and it would be cool if Fride created the Order of the Raven Knights based on the image of a this set from DS2 Secondly, simple crows look like their insides are falling out at the last stage of rotting, and they walk around in agony until they die
Could be some concept for som that they had been hugging themselves for so long their hands have fused to the skin and replaced the ribs using it's tongue with chameleon like shooting proboscis to drag people or food to eat
Besides fighting sister friede and father ariandel, i didnt like this dlc so much. The world felt small and not very unique outside of being winter. Plus their only one ice spell
Their "tail" is just shit stuck in their ass hair; as for its purpose, your guess is as good as mine. I, however, know that most birds use shit as glue when making their nests.
^ This isn't true. Most birds actively take shit away from their nests, as it attracts disease and predators. Some birds even swallow their children's poop rather than transporting it. Nests not mechanically slotted or woven together are usually held together by spiderweb, but sometimes specialised spittle (yes, that's what swallow's nest soup is) or clay.
It reminds of chick's when they get poop stuck around their butt and it dries and is very hard to remove and can kill them because of the blockage. Pasty but I think it's called. It can get really bad looks alot like these enemies. I always assumed it was supposed to be like that
while it is actually just gross on the face of it, i like the idea of it being some kind of fetal appendage. It fits with the theme of stagnation and 'eternal youth'
I always troughs it was was poop/ intestines and stuff, because fromsoftware loves to feature the idea from Japanese mythology that the souls resides in the belly. That’s why we have the dung eater, and that one attack from the headless enemies in sekiro where he shoves his hand up your butt and pulls out the soul. Which is also very similar to the visceral attack from bloodborne.
