When it comes to how the wrists work throughout the golf swing, the majority of golfers get this area of the swing completely WRONG, leading to multiple mishits and a lifetime of frustrations!
How the wrists should move in the golf swing is one of the most asked questions I receive from viewers wanting to know "The Secret". The truth is, the wrist motion in golf is a very complex subject and one that has many possible variations depending on a player's grip type and shot shape preference.
However, there is ONE HUGE MISTAKE that the vast majority of golfers are making when it comes to the wrists, wrist hinge, and creating LAG in the golf swing and this video will explain HOW you've been getting it wrong your entire golfing life!!!
Using the HACKMOTION wrist sensor, I will explain and demonstrate how you can pre-set the ideal wrist and arm structure into your set-up and build more consistent club face control and ball striking in order to improve your golf.

I don't believe I've seen it explained in one of your other videos but is the left arm 'give blood' positioned like the right arm or turned clockwise (for a right handed player)?

Rob: in your drill you're demonstrating the arms moving to the position where the club shaft is parallel to the ground with no body turn. Is that just for the drill or is that your preferred method for starting a swing?

21.57 Hi Rob, like everyone says you are a quality teacher! My problem with this video is how you get the wrists to the starting position of the drill when you are out on the course etc? Quite a few people have asked this question with no response? I struggle with the wrists at the beginning of the swing to be able to achieve the perfect position that you set out for the starting point of the drill drill. Keep up with the inst Rob, many thanks!!

Question Rob…how about incorporating “hands in” into the drill. That would mean the shaft is not parallel to the target line at P2, but conforming more to the grid. Good or bad idea?
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 2 месяца назад
It's certainly an option. But "hands in" isn't shaft in at P2. In the model, P2 would have the hands and shaft lined up.

Pointing out the ulnar deviation at address is a “huge” thing in my opinion. Very few teachers talk about this and most people I see play have already cocked the wrist at address which makes it very difficult to get the correct wrist position at the top from that starting position. Only thing I would point out is that when you show yourself going back towards the ball on the downswing it may be worth mentioning this is for demonstration of the wrist position and not necessarily where the club will end up in motion. I only point this out because I have been someone who has visually seen a position and practiced it statically to where I ended up swinging on the wrong path. Keep up the good work.

Jack Nicklaus(GOAT) took the clubhead back straight along the ball line until his hands passed the right leg. (no wrist hinge). Once hands pass the right leg, the club is raised(lifted) by the right bicep(how we pick up anything) When we raise the club with right elbow bending, the wrists hinge naturally.

Rob, The only part I’m unclear about is impact. Don’t we want some left wrist flex (lag?) at impact? Your video “The #1 Wrist Mistake in the Golf Swing” seems different from this one where you turned the wrists at the top to close the face slightly. I hope I’m not confusing others with this question.
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 3 месяца назад
Fair question. The exact amount of flexion/extension will vary due to individual grips and desired shot shapes. My slight preference for most amateur golfers would be to lean towards more flexion (face closed) than extension (face open). This video is discussing the more stable wrist conditions during a specific part of the swing, but at impact I'd like to see some lead wrist flexion to create some shaft lean.

Rob, this is excellent. One question I’d love your feedback on: how does this P2 position “look” and reconcile with the visual of the grid? I’ve been religiously trying to get the club head to follow the outer track on takeaway, but now seeing this, I’m wondering what now to do, since shaft is parallel to toe line at P2. Thanks,

After doing some drills with this in my livingroom, i cant believe how good this feels. My swing is so sequenced and powerful. If it works for me when hitting live, i dont know that i would even want to put the club down on the ground to address the ball. Very helpful to put the butt of the club on the ball with the hinge in place. It gives me a great starting/focus point. Literally all i have to do is swing and it feels so good and powerful. Without a doubt the 2 things that tremendously helped my game was - 1. flat wrist (not cupped) and 2 . feeling connected as in feeling my pit arms staying against my body like being able to hold a towel throughout the swing between my pit arms and body. I used to have a badly cupped left wrist resulting in bad inconsistency going left and right and every bad shots one can come up with. As soon as I started to "feel" and look at my wrist to make sure it was flat I immediately started to fall on plane and hit much better shots and if I start to play bad like pulling or pushing I have a reminder to then "stay connected" and make sure I transfer weight by forcing myself to finish the swing which in turn will make you have a complete weight transfer (I force myself to lift the left heel a tiny bit on the back swing then stamp it down on the follow through) But the left wrist was a game changer for me and most likely shaved off at least 6-10 strokes off my game. I am a low index of 12.9 being about 20 2 years ago. In golf you learn something everytime one gets out. Great video.

This is one of your most important videos Rob. I used the knowledge I gained from it to have a breakthrough at the range today. I'm working hard at the 10 words of s&t, using drills like the wrench and the bowler. I was hitting these push fades with driver. I was happy with the push part of it, because that suggested a good inside-out club path, and I was striking the center of the face perfectly but I must have been opening the face to the path ever so slightly. That was the only conclusion. But where was it happening? So then I thought of this video, and I wondered if I was hinging my wrists too much on the backswing. I took my normal backswing, looked back at my hands and there it was..my lead wrist was cupped. I remembered the drill you talk about in this video and I started to work with it: pre-setting the ideal wrist and arm structure, and it was the magic missing ingredient. All of drives were now straight or push draws (which can appear straight to the naked eye) or just straight pushes. Such a good feeling to troubleshoot a problem. Thanks to what you teach here. No other golf instructor mentions how hinging too much will lead to a cupped lead wrist. This is why I keep watching your videos over and over, because the knowledge soaks in with repetition , and I keep having breakthroughs. So thanks again Rob!

Most pros actually don't do it that way. They think it destroys "connectivity". Tom Weiskopf did do it that way however. That argument has been going on if golf magazines for 50 years. The concept of a flat wrist however goes back to about 1964 with Jack Nicklaus and Golf Digest's "square-to-square" revelation and subsequent fiasco of people denying it. Nobody does this any better and more noticeable than Lee Trevino and Dustin Johnson. Long swingers like John Daly and Phil do it on the way back down. What you are really doing is taking control of the club about like a baseball home run hitter does with a bat. You are setting up to "center punch" that ball with square impact authority. It is a sport, not a powder puff derby. I would hit the ball so hard on the center of my driver that my left wrist would get sore after awhile. Ouch when you hit it to the outside of center of the driver clubface. This is the level of authority you want to attain. It makes little difference just where you set this up but most pros do it at the top of the swing do to connectivity issues with body turn. Picking it and the beginning of the swing is the swing of a hack. Just wrists OK, but arms and shoulders only go along for the ride. That's connectivity.

This is exactly why I changed my swing completely and learned the one plane swing. I found with the one plane, nothing has to be timed, my swing is consistent now and my ball striking has improved by leaps and bounds! The wrist cock is built into my swing and I don't have to think about anything. Weight forward, always lean, check grip, shoulders start the swing and arms follow, easy peasy. Tom Saguto is an excellent instructor and has helped thousands of golfers around the world.

I've recently been struggling with a face open to path. My path looks okay inside to out, but at contact the face is open. I'm not really sure why but I decided it was all in my wrist and that I needed to feel excessive extension. But watching this video has reminded me to consider other causes. You remind us that at P2 the face should not be excessively open or closed.

Hi Rob, does this drill work with the driver? Whenever I use this drill with the driver, I tend to slice it because of the automatic reaction to hold the wrist "hinge" throughout the swing, resulting in big amount of shaft lean which is not desirable for driver.

Great video! But what’s the feeling or how to or when to get to those wrist conditions from the takeaway instead of setting them as in the drill?

Do you have a video showing how you setup the grid with alignment sticks?

Why don't you show how to transition from the drill to a real swing?

Should not the toe at P2 be at 1:00 o'clock instead of 12:00??

Your demos of P2 around 6 mins or so wasn’t a move from P1 to P2 but straight to P2. So we didn’t see any shoulder rotation or lateral club/grip movement associated with a dynamic takeaway. What am I missing? Should the hands have travelled more along the hand path than what we see in your P2 position?

Nothing new in golf. This is very similar to the Three Magic Moves method. Square to Square Golf is very similar and easier to use. Sam Goulden teaches Square to Square. I like that better

Amateur golfers have no idea of the words ulner radial or most pro golfers for that matter - wrists react to the weight of the club and length of the swing - plus how you are gripping the club of course - simple as that - I asked a top top player about his hands - his answer was … no idea - don’t think too much - but some good points here

I understand that the words might be new to you, but learning the correct anatomical terms (4 words) means clearer communication. That’s my goal with the channel, to educate the masses and remove the ambiguity surrounding so much golf instruction. Hope that explains why I do it this way.

Very much more comprehensive and very clearly explained instruction than you get from many online instructors. The explanation and demo this week was brilliant. So simple and it cleared up a question for me, despite watching almost every video that Rob has produced over many many years.

Just to wordy and technical jargon for most amatures. Good content it's just too much tech stuff.

I’m ok with that assessment, but keeping golf instruction simple doesn’t make it simple, only incomplete and ineffective. I aim to be clear and detailed. There’s too much ambiguity in golf instruction that leads players floundering and not knowing exactly what to do. I’ll tell you EXACTLY what to do in detail, so that there’s no confusion or doubt about what’s required. I understand that’s “too technical” for some people (and that’s ok) but there are plenty of golf videos on YT that will “keep it simple” if that’s what you’re looking for.

@robcheneygolf1 fair enough. I do not fault your instruction for sure as it's very well thought out. I have learned from your videos, and thank you for your reply.
