I am a vegan for the past 3 years. And Brij let me answer your questions 1) Cows would die themselves if not killed? This is a problem created by non-vegetarians. Would that mean cows deserved to be killed? With your logic, would you fill a broken bucket with more water because water is leaking or would you patch the broken bucket to solve the root cause? Now the patching is what vegans are trying to do. 2) Killing bugs during farming. This is not conscious killing and cannot equate to forced breeding and killing of other animals. We did not breed those insects just to be killed. Vegans do not have the answers to EVERY problem, but it is Ethical. Not sure what you meant by "did a lot of research" on veganism mean but your facts/logic doesn't seem to make sense

The whole world cannot be vegan.. it will massively destroy the ecosystem if every single human being in this planet eats only plants. Use some common sense. There has to be a balance in nature. Imagine in a jungle there are no carnivorous animals. There's a reason why herbivorous and carnivorous animals coexist. The same applies with human beings as well. Don't ruin this ecosystem by promoting veganism all the time.

i'm vegan too. yeah we're just protecting our crops . it's sad but 2 things 1) they're killed instantly and aren't bred (raped) and killed, and they don't live in our confinement. In fact we kill them because we don't want them so it's more like shooing away and defense. Raising them with food, locking them, fattening them, raping them, AND killing them is cruelty. yup totally agree. regarding solution to every problem, sometimes I think not even existing is a solution. not from a personal level bc we're fine now but not having kids. there's something called the human extinction movement that can solve the other things more comprehensively. in summary, it is better we don't exist so we don't have to commit wrongdoings if we understand that even ethical people negatively affect certain parts of the world. it may be a sad attitude, but it's real.

More relevant argument may be that farms clear out a lot of forests driving away all the animals that used to live until it is flattened

Many things discussed here are simply factually wrong. 1. US avg consumption is 10x more than recommended daily consumption and this has already changed the balance in nature. We have 3500-4000 cal/ person available here. Feeling hungry is simply a result of these gigantic portions that’s made normal. You actually don’t need to eat 1/4lb of steak to feel “full”. 2. Corn - only 6-7% of corn is consumed by humans. Cows eat the remaining 70% (10-20% for making fuel to drive cars which also kills bugs so go figure). So the bugs are killed to feed not humans but to livestock and cars. 3. Given the wealth and population, US actually is way up there in terms of cardiovascular diseases / obesity/ even diabetes despite the protein frenzy diet that’s being perpetuated all the time as healthy. 4. Our digestive system is not designed for eating meat even after centuries of consuming meat. 5. Protein is not the only thing to worry about. Indias key challenges are malnutrition, wasting, stunting, women health etc - all of which are mainly due to economic challenges rather than the lack of protein. Other chronic diseases ( cancers e.g. ) and HIV are certainly on the rise but US is right behind or ahead of India on many of these. 6. Organic / grass fed is a farce frankly. The Cow that’s butchered in front of you is also not a cow. It is a designer meat spewing body engineered to satiate human desire to eat ridiculous amounts of it. If not for the use of fertilizers and breeding technologies (green revolution) developed in the 70s, we would not be alive to talk about organic / grass fed or whatever “processed / unprocessed “ obsession that everyone is so consumed with. 6. US is not a country that can cook anymore. That simply is a fact (fast food is what is killing the world, not the lack of proteins from plants - which also is ill informed). It is difficult to recreate a lost market that used to be more balanced between meat and non meat based nutrition from scratch. It is also a fact that meat is actually consumed by the wealthy nations. It is a concern across the world that as the population of mid income sector increases in developing nations, they will start consuming meat which is a formidable challenge from a sustainability pov. So making khichdi should not be a passion of the riches. This is so distorted. 7. Plants do need a lot of cooking else you will be sitting in the toilet forever. Plant proteins are big and cook at a higher temperature. Cellulose and fibers also need higher temperatures to cook for better digestibility. Ghee is not vegan and is bad for you only in large quantities. The amount of fat your “appetizer” wagyu has can be used to make tadka for at least 9 portions and more. Also, who adds ghee to Bharta?! Animal proteins cook at a low temperature. The point is cooking temperature is very subjective to the type of food. This requires skills to know, which, unfortunately is lost in the west. 8. Let me not even get started on the US cheese. It is not food. It is a joke to say that they are more nutritious because they have proteins. I like your sense of humor and hence started following this podcast. However, It is mind blowing to see the lack of knowledge or even an attempt to really put things in perspective and simply think the US way is better for you esp where doctors and engineers are present. I had to chime in.

@Ellsped10

What a great topi of conversation! The problem in America is that people don’t cook and rely on fast food or carry outs etc. we keep hearing how to shave a few minutes off in order to have more time! Nobody uses that extra free time to get healthy! Most people use their extra “free time” to be on their phones or computers etc. Which eventually makes us gain weight! I worked as a teacher, raised 2 kids and cooked at least every other day! Not easy but once one establishes priorities one can make it work! Unfortunately, big, huge, multi million dollars companies only think of profits (shareholders and CEOs)! As some chefs believe, meat should be used as flavors and veggies, grains, etc. as main ingredients! BUT also it’s important to remember how large and spread out USA is! Even if you eat a fruit grown in season, it’s not going to taste good because they’re picked unripe in order to ship them to other states! I’ve eaten the sweetest peaches in California at a farm stand! They had ripened on the trees! I can share some of my experiences but we need to keep the conversation short! 😅❤❤

I have watched all of your podcasts and I must say this is one video where you spit out facts as if a lot of a detail was at your exposure and also made unnecessary comments about a community as a whole without even being aware of how many millions of people are leading a healthy lifestyle following the same idea of food you spoke about, esp Indian meals. Drawing impressions from what you were exposed to is totally valid and it’s your opinion for sure. But you cannot comment about something referring to a country as a whole which you have no detailed information about for the past 20 or so years. And I hope people watching this podcast don’t take everything you speak as facts!

I believe Brij is overlooking a critical aspect, demand and supply. While it is true that cows are not naturally meant to live longer, the industry’s practices are exacerbating the situation. Cows are injected with GMOs to accelerate their growth and increase the number of calves they produce, all to meet the high demand for meat. This has several detrimental effects: The methane gas produced by cows is harmful to the environment. This issue is directly tied to the demand for meat. If we did not breed cows for food, the methane emissions would be significantly reduced. Raising cows for meat consumption requires an enormous amount of water. The water footprint of beef is substantially higher compared to plant-based foods. This inefficient use of water resources is another major drawback of non-vegetarian diets. There is a growing body of research linking red meat consumption to an increased risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. The saturated fats and cholesterol found in red meat contribute to these health issues, making it a less healthy dietary choice.

I am not vegetarian mainly bcoz i come from a culture in india where saying no to fish is offensive. We offer fish to our god, we need fish for all important ceremonies including death and wedding. But I dont agree that vegetarian preparations in india strip off all the nutrition. Atleast in Bengal and in the south, there is a much greater variety of vegetarian dishes which are prepared tastefully but also without killing the nutrition. India is at an advantage because of the variety of spices that are grown locally, seasonal veggies and fruits which are lically grown. Yes, meatbased food is way tastier i give you that. But again the taste buds are diffeent. I can speak for my entire indian-Bengali community that a good fish platter of hilsa, bhetki, prawn >>>>> any red meat steak any day

one mistake i found was "plant based pasta is more expensive than regular pasta" . Most regular pastas sold in the store, whole wheat, that's the cheapest price in the store. Adding something that isn't supposed to be added into the pasta like chickpeas and not being the most popular option- that's what's expensive. If pasta was somehow chickpea pasta, that would be more expensive. But vegan pasta is cheaper than egg noodles, so this isn't a good example. This just proves specialty products are more expensive.

@@L20241 fair point. i was mentioning tho it's not because of vegan or high protein. it's moreso because it's a new product. Wheat flour and chickpea flour themselves are cheap. Prob not as much demand; for example I as a vegan never ate this even though it sounds interesting.

Okay! I agree with the struggle of being short. I am 5ft tall and if I eat badly or skip exercise, it shows on my body so quickly (this is apart from the fact that my body type is pear shaped generally). My suggestion is meal prepping! It has been a game changer for my healthy eating. Sometimes I eat crap just because I feel lazy to cook. Meal prepping calculated high protein medium-low carb meals on Sundays has changed my eating pattern considerably. Another way I regulate my red meat consumption (steak/pork/lamb/goat) is that I don’t cook it at home. I don’t buy it, I don’t cook it. I just buy fish, chicken, turkey, and eggs and eat that. So when I go out to eat (1-2 times a week) I can actually indulge in eating something with red meat. Apart from protein benefits, we have to recognize that red meat is not good for your cholesterol generally because of the high saturated fat content. I also agree with Brij about the fact that you can’t cut down sugar entirely from your diet. As long as you can somewhat regulate it, it’s okay. Let’s be kind to ourselves! 💕

I didn't watch the full episode yet, but I'm a bit into it , and I wanted to point out that a vegan diet is CHEAPER and NOT for the privileged. Maybe if you're trying to look a vegan diet in American food, that gets you stuck. But even the protetin standards were created for the average American who always eats meat for them to get less calories from sugar and fat and more from protein. If you try a more traditional diet like an Indian diet, and you buy lentils bulk (different types) and lets say a brown rice for more fiber content, and you can spice them how you want. If you're lower in iron, eat lentils with more darkness in color like kidney beans, black beans, horse gram, black urad, black chickpeas, and drink like a lemonnade on the side for iron absorption. You can thicken these gravies with cashew paste and then get more calories and protein and fat to have a filling meal, and you can add veggies. you can make different curries as well as dry veggies and use cheap items like soy chunks or tofu if u want less antinutrients, and if you're bold, chinese people who were poor and buddhist made fake meats w wheat called seitan and 200 variations... u can cook those for the texture. I feel like meat texture can come close from vegan products if you want, and it can for a cheap price if you make it, and if you're only making dals daily and switching the variety (what veggie to add, whether to add tomato or not, whether to use hing or kasoori methi) and cook using coconut oil, and eat spiced peanuts for snacks and plenty of fruits and veggies, you won't be deficient. Just remember to take a b12 and d supplement, but if you feel omg thats unnatural, cows do so too. Dal and rice is a comfort food for me, and I like warm veggies on the side too. Dal has been rated the 10th best curry in the world TASTE wise , yet its so healthy and nutritious. The reason I'm vegan is I knew about the killing of cows and whatnot but I didn't know they were raped for efficiency. They're raped with catheters to produce milk, and theyre made pregnant each year. Their calves get beaten if they want mom's milk, and whether you take dairy or milk , anywhere in the world with a slight western influence including india, 99 percent chance youre supporting cruel industries and even driving them by basic economics. Essentially, you're paying for animal rape but directly. If you were in the position of the cow or any of the other animals, fine be pounced by a lion I guess that's natural (i'm mad at the universe for making that), but don't be raped and put into a dark cell. We're humans, and we can be healthier on a vegan diet.
@omkaar1886
@omkaar1886 11 дней назад
the only privileged part is if a nonvegan goes to mcdonalds and a vegan goes to an expensive vegan restaraunt and both eat the same frequency out. but not raping an animal should never be a privilege. Unfortunately our govt subsidies cover things like dairy. also we can't speak if we have phones and laptops what's privileged and not. at that point, it's like saying, "i'm too busy I don't have time". that just shows a form of bias and how we prioritize A not B. The weight of meat vs a tofu block, the meat is almost always more expensive. In fact, meat takes more resources to produce and is really bad for many butchers' mental health, so theoretically meat should be more expensive and most likely is. Yes, speicifc veggies have gotten more expensive but that's because it takes effort to transport them, put pesticides, and not make them spoil. Thus, we can be more sustainible by eating what veggies grow naturally in the season or getting frozen veggies when they don't grow- which has less pesticides and is cheaper. Also, I eat well as a vegan. It's been 3 yrs 3 months since I did it through an ethical route, and I'm 6'3 225 lbs and go on and off to the gym and feel I will be happy with my physique after more consistency.

I did watch more of the episode, and the argument about the insects can be solved by 2 things. 1) Realizing we humans do suck and are hypocritical and go against our biological wants to have kids and NOT have kids so make the human population extinct- this is a real thing, we're smart enough to realize we're the problem- to fix it not existing is the best as humans never will be a net positive on the world. 2) Understanding that this is just self defense and understanding I'm no animal lover and I wasn't , so yes, I'm defending the crop I want by killing the insect. I'm not ENSLAVING the insect or raping the insect (which is why I wou;dn't do honey) . Realizing that killing once is fine to defend property unfortunately that's what it has to be, but I'm not confining the animal for 5 yrs and abusing their family. 3) Understanding these small animals feel less than bigger animals. still they feel something so it's not right, but understanding that sentience is an evolved mechanism that helped animals produce more population. if they felt pain, they were more likely to live. If they feel no pain, why would they try to even defend themselves a lot. I think this pain is def evolved , and cows feel a great deal of emotional and physical pain like humans, but insects don't. insects are where the pain mechanism started. plants had stimuli, but plants never felt anything. plants had the adaptation JUST before pain which is similar to if I were to put my finger next to u but not touch you- you move back. This is my understanding and justification of the issue. I'm willing to learn more, but I know for a fact that animals were raped and are raped. I don't support this direct demand of rape. Fun fact... chickens in the 1900s were smaller but someone did a breeding competition (aka raping competition) to make the chicken bigger. and there was a winner, and that fat chicken (who cant even support their feet) became the chicken we eat today. this is very cruel to breed animals based on their genetic defects in a raping way.

80% of Indians living in India are non-vegetarians. Chicken, fish and goat are very common. In some parts of India, people also eat cow meat. But we do still eat lot of vegetables, we don’t eat red meat in every meal. Even the non-vegetarians in India have meals which are completely vegetarians. I think, the reason why the western world promotes veganism is because their every meal includes meat, too much red meat and eventually you will not be able to digest such heavy food. Too much meat is also not good.

Brij, I think you should do a bit more research. You are right about the gas emissions from excessive livestock farming, but more gas is produced when there is greater demand for consuming animal products. This is one of the problems with consuming irresponsibly sourced meat-the law of supply and demand. Essentially, if fewer people consume meat, less gas is released by livestock. Additionally, you didn't mention the significant amounts of water and food (such as cereals) required to feed livestock, which could instead help feed many people in third-world countries. Ultimately, everything should be done in balance-there are no absolute right or wrong answers.

I'm pretty sure the quality of meat in US is near the worst in the world, but just not meat, all food. Eggs are likely not clean. Do you consider all the drugs and other hormones etc pumped into animals as well as chickens, therefore their eggs? Brij, like Zoya says, the number of cows that are reared wouldn't be so many if there wasn't the demand. So much land is cleared for the cows to graze, so not only are trees knocked down but cows release so much gas. Organic produce doesn't go off in a day either. These days there are so many athletes who are vegan, you don't need the meat! You guys should also educate yourself on processed food and the quality of what you put in your body. To Zoyas comment about why people choose fish over red meat... for health and for ethical and environmental reasons.

Zarna I was a vegetarian on the road for 25 years…so difficult. Easier now. But then I went vegan and it’s as challenging as being a vegetarian was 30 years ago. Eating Indian is a relief… but you are right about the oil and fat factor. Unlike the Mediterranean diet that is olive oil based, Indian food (here) is awash in seed oils. Much of the kid’s information about everything from nutrition to cows is partially true, but there’s a LOT of misinformation and small pieces of a big picture. Live and learn. It is complex indeed. But what’s not complex for me is that factory farming is unspeakably cruel and for that reason alone I try (imperfectly) to eat mostly vegan.

India was majorly an agriculture based society where easily available and low-cost fat was desired as most people were doing manual labour for 10-12 hours on daily basis, now situation is changed and there should definately be changes in it. But for someone who is able to burn of all the calories intakes is proportioned that way! I am not big fan of meat but I do think it's a better source of protein bcz when u try to protein from things like lentils ,beans ,chickpeas u have to eat a lot of it..100g of meat and lentils both give a good amount of protein but it's very hard to finish 100g of chickpeas where as u can quickly finish 100g of any form of meat
@omkaar1886
@omkaar1886 11 дней назад
that's the thing. these 100g standards and stuff are based on the avg meat eater (or average person) and based on what they currently eat, what's the healthiest diet for them. It's similar to how the bmi standards are based on the avg human and more eurocentric and don't target your race directly. The results and standards can vary depeneding on this. Similarly, we don't need massive amounts of protein. That standard was just created like that because even unhealthy americans eat burgers and get to that amount without effort. The reason it's hard to eat that many chickpeas is because of the other nutrients like fiber which are super necessary. I guess the protein amounts were just meant to be like ok if ur a meat eater and want to be healthy try to focus less on fats and processed carbs and more on proteins. In that same note, yes I feel a vegan who is only moderately active should reduce the rice amount by half and focus more on lentils, but eat how many lentils you CAN eat and that's a good enough meal good enough ratio. These numbers were morely created to make sure no one is trying to take excess of bad or processed nutrients. Even carbs are filling if you eat complex carbs. For more absorption of protein, u can easily sprout the lentils and boil them. also i can eat a full tub of chickpea hummus that i make and my mom who cant digest other protein sources can somehow eat a full bowl of peanuts(considered a legume lmao) (easily 1000 calories) and so can i but i can digest other things .

Thats the thing, its a myth that you need to have meat as athletes or as someone who is into body building. Just take examples of Virat Kohli, John Abraham, Shahid Kapur and so many of them who have built great bodies or are greatest sportsmen in the world. While it may be true that America doesn't provide convenience around Vegetarian food and because you cant trade that off, you choose a meat based diet. And so that argument of it being your choice is understandable, but the other things you guys mention are factually incorrect. So, if you ever do want to switch to vegetarianism dont hold yourself back because you believe body building /protein intake will be affected by it. Not true! plus, there are so many other benefits of vegetarianism to climate impact, non-cruelty towards animals, body agility and so on, and the only trade off is maybe the taste(which is changing too with impossible meat/ vegan mock meat) and a little bit of inconvenience due to access (which Im sure is now not such a big deal, especially in bigger cities like NYC)

I started following this podcast because it used to be funny. Interesting topics and elements of humor. It's not anymore. It's honestly a lot of whining. Zarna, you're a comedienne! Bring back the funny! Now, a few misconceptions here to unpack... Firstly, veganism or vegetarianism is not a more expensive lifestyle. Meat and seafood are almost always the more costly options at any restaurant or grocery store. Even high quality vegan items will be cheaper than meat items of similar caliber quality. Secondly, @Zarna. Pizza or a bagel are not the only vegetarian foods accessible anywhere. Please admit that's just an excuse for your dietary habits. Have a salad. Have soup. Have a sandwich. But don't say that because you don't eat meat, you are forced to eat unhealthy. That's just spreading misinformation about living as a vegetarian. Brij: It's not natural that fruits are being grown out of season. Also Brij: But it's fine that animals like cows are bred in factories specifically to be butchered. They're going to die anyway. And anyone who claims vegetarians don't or can't get enough protein is grossly misinformed. Athletes can be vegetarian, especially today. If you want to eat red meat, eat red meat, but don't fool yourself into thinking you're doing it solely for the protein intake or that it's the healthier option.

Just sayin'.... Think about Ayurvedic diet and its medical science. Many Americans are increasingly appreciating TRADITIONAL Eastern ways of living and eating for better mind-body health. We are more amd more turning to the wisdom of Eastern (largely Indian) approaches to our health care and also what's good for Mother Earth. Think Ayurveda (thousands of years old and still practiced increasingly in the US and Canada), yoga (especially think what are Sattvic, Rajasic, Tamasic foods?), and meditation (for mental, physical, spiritual harmony). We should research the benefits of all this profound Indian HERITAGE open-mindedly, with enough time and study of different resources, and with the respectful consideration that it deserves. Quick food hacks for me is fruit smoothies, green smoothies, greek yogurt, cheakpea salads, boiled eggs. I do agree many times food is cooked in a manner that all the nutrient and vitamins vanishes by the time we eat. Does not matter vegetarian or non vegetarian food. The best thing to have all nutrients is raw diet by adding steamed diet.

One food habit all americans need to inculcate is to practise, practise, practise till they reduce their food waste to zero, shop less, use food after the expiry date in the fridge unless it is rotten, take smaller portions on the plate, and if you have leftovers on your plate, put them in a Tupperware box and in the fridge, and heat and eat the next day. Ditto ask for doggy bags in restaurants instead of wasting the leftover food. Also volunteer with organisations that take food thrown away at supermarkets and restaurants and distribute it to the needy instead of it all going to landfills. Do your bit by buying more food near the expiry date so it is not thrown away the next day, especially if you intend to consume it immediately, and that food item will be cheaper too. Go on dumpster diving trips with friends outside large supermarkets and distribute the finds to the homeless, and educate homeless communities on which are the best supermarkets to go and get quality food from the dumpster outside, or speak to supermarket and restaurant managers on places they can go and distribute their leftover or thrown away food too. It will do a lot to save mother earth.

Also, my son 100% chooses Salmon every time over other meats. He loves to grill fresh salmon (as fresh as it can be in the Midwest) and have it with Mac and broccoli. We always have him try new foods and he goes to culinary camp in the summer as well. We try to explain to him that it’s quality over quantity. Yes we pay higher for some food items because the quality and nutrition is better. Thanks for the show.

This is going to be an exciting comment section session. In America most states are below 0 degree most of the year. We get four good months if at all. Meat keeps you warm and also easily maintainable during such times. Red meat is very addictive so is cheese, other dairy products and don’t get me on rice. Food is addictive as you grow older, some more than the other. I don’t think many people who live outside of such climate understand American climate. There are people maintaining a certain food culture that’s great but that’s not a general thing. Then there are others extremely traditional and patriotic to their country with American citizens (pun intended) who should be living back in their country but living here because of safety reasons or money. It’s high time they go back. Food is food and people enjoy different things.
