"This was their finest hour" or "Their finest hour" is a famous historic speech delivered by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 18, 1940.
Churchill reflected on the dire situation in France and talked about the looming Nazi invasion of the British Isles. But most of all, with his unshaken determination he rallied the British People and prepared the Nation for resistance: If we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.
"This was their finest hour" was the last of three major speeches given around the period of the Battle of France (the others two being "Blood, toil, tears, and sweat" speech of 13 May, and ""We shall fight on the beaches" speech of 4 June). Events developed dramatically over the five-week period, and although broadly similar in themes, each speech addressed a different military and diplomatic context.

Yes he did Henderson. When he couldn't get air superiority and knew were not yet capable of attacking he turned his attention to Russisa. He thought Britain would be very easy but when he realised he'd have to commit he went after the bigger fish.

@James Henderson That isn't true. He hadn't expected to invade the UK because he thought that the conquest of France would end the war in Europe, but Operation Sea Lion was organized when that assumption proved false. Executing Sea Lion while planning Barbarossa wouldn't have been that unusual. There were numerous times during the war that the Allies fought one battle while planning the next.

As a Frenchman, I remember his speech after the collapse of our country. on the BBC. He said to hang on and never despair because after darkness, dawn will come. He had spoken in French and his speech gave a lot of hope to the occupied French. Like De Gaulle, Winston Churchill was a fighter who never agreed to surrender. Well actually like one born every ten years for his age because there was a man called Mustafa Kemal Atatürk which born in 1881, churchill born in 1874 so there is only 7 years of a gap between these two great men's for the history. İ know that currently with the current situation of turkey you wouldn't agree with me but in 1930s turkey was a modern European nation unlike now and the only reason that turkey was a modern European nation was Atatürk. Without him there wouldn't be a turkey. There would be a tsarist regime in Russia without Atatürk defeating allies in Çanakkale strait which would mean İstanbul and warshaw would be occupied by Russia. So he was one of the greatest men in the history. And if you look at those thousand years between 874 and 1874 you will see a lot more great man for history

"Hitler knows that he will have to break us on this island or lose the war" was brilliant phrasing. At the time Hitler was running roughshod over everyone and everything in Europe and looked unstoppable. Reading “The Splendid and the Vile” by Erik Larson about Churchill. He did this speech twice, once for the House chamber and again that night for the public. It says that the reports of the public’s reaction to this speech was “some suggested he was drunk, others that he did not himself feel the confidence he was proclaiming. A few thought he was tired.” Cecil King, editorial director of the Daily Mirror wrote in his diary, “whether he was drunk or all-in from sheer fatigue, I don’t know, but it was the poorest possible effort on an occasion when he should have produced the finest speech of his life”. One listener went so far as to send Churchill a telegram saying it sounded as though he had a heart condition and recommended that he work lying down. As it happened, the problem was…Churchill had insisted on reading the speech with a cigar clenched in his mouth.😂

Sir Winston Churchill, led his people to victory, leading to the Battle of Britain; and had he said; this was our finest hour!!!

This speech reminds me of Henry V's speech to his men the night before the battle of Agincourt. It is that powerful, that inspiring.

In WW2, Britain lost its empire. Instead, however, Britain SAVED the world. That's why we call it "their FINEST HOUR".

It doesn't make up for much but from the bottom of my heart I apologise we failed to uphold the British tradition... We have forgotten the very thing you fought for.... Freedom, the right to live...😠

This speech of Churchill should go down in history as one of the 10 greatest speeches of all time, All Europe lay at the feet of the Fuhrer and only Britain stood in his path, he just had to knock them out and he would and perhaps have ended the war and might not even have thought of invading Russia, but Churchill's stubbornness made Hitler take the gamble of invading the Soviet Union and the tide turned against Germany. How one man stood against the mightiest empire ever known and still came out victorious will be a point thst will be debated for the next thousand years
