This story would have been 10x funnier if the kamchatka was the only surviving ship of the battle.
@JackJackrabbit
@JackJackrabbit 26 дней назад
It gets even better. When they meet the japanese the fully lit up kamchatka broadcasted a message sounding roughly like "hello fellow russians, be careful as there are japanese torpedo boats around here" to the japanese boats. They then proceeded to first sink the kamchatka and then annihilate the baltic fleet.
@dimitrijensk2845
@dimitrijensk2845 14 дней назад
@@JackJackrabbitit gets even better than that. The Russian admiral apparently was hit in the head and was knocked unconscious. When he woke up in a Japanese sick bay, the first thing he asked was if the Kamchatka was still afloat. Upon being told it wasn’t he reportedly said, “thank God.”

The US Navy Tradition for almost 250 years now demands competence at some level of command over a ship even if you don't like the officers.

To further what you were saying about how fast the Japanese modernized, Admiral Tōgō helped to fire shore batteries at the British ships during the bombardment of Kagoshima in 1863, the US Civil War was going on then. It had only been a decade or so since Japan was opened up to the West. Now he's leading a force of modern pre-Dreadnought ships against a European empire.

Screwups like this happen in every navy. The US navy had it's fair share of incidents, the British did as well, so did everyone else. But the difference is that in those navies it was precisely that, incidents, something out of the norm, an error of the system. In Russian navy stuff like this IS the norm. The most out of the ordinary thing in this whole fiasco was the existence of a competent and not-corrupt officer in charge of the fleet and the fact they made it that far in the first place should be atributed to that abnormality- an honest and competent officer in Russia...

Speaking of Rozhestvensky's early death, despite being around the same age, Nikolai Nebogatov the commander of the 3rd Pacific Squadron outlived him by 13 years, dying at 73 years old rather than Rozhestvensky's 60.

If you wanna see how tragically funny/ironic this story truly is, contrast this with the voyage of the great white fleet a few years later, that sailed 4 times the distance the Baltic fleet did, without causing any mayham. Instead of creating potential enemies, they helped shift opinion in the US' favour, actually helped some cities devastated by natural disasters, helped by highlighting issues US ships had, particurlarly during rough seas and a lot of sailors and officers gained some much needed experience on long voyages, especially when it came to managing fuel (thanks to British coal-carrying supply ships.) Another example of Russian/Soviet naval shenanigans/incompetance not (yet) covered by that chanel, is when a Soviet submarine captain wanted to surface in the middle of a carrier strike group to take pictures for propaganda purposes only to surface directly in front of the carrier Kitty Hawk, then crash diving and having some damage to the sail from the Kitty Hawk and loosing a propeller blade as well as some anechoic tiles that the Americans had to scrape off of the Kitty Hawks' bow, giving the USN some valuable intel on the noise-reduction technology of Soviet submarines.

The Russian navy seems to be mentally stuck in the mindset of the pre Royal Navy. Before the modernization and dominance of the Royal Navy most countries built their ships to look impressive rather than to fight crewed them with pesants rounded up from the fields and handed command to soldiers who were friends with the king with varying degrees of success. The French and Spanish managed to produce a moderately useful navy this way. However when they began encountering the lethality of professional Royal navy ships built from the keel up for war and stripped of almost all guilding and decorative work crewed by men who'd largely spent their lives at sea and commanded by officers trained and promoted for competence in their field they too saw the need to take naval warfare seriously and instituted similar reforms. How the Russians have managed to miss the point time and time again during five hundred years of naval development is just stunning.
@mobiuscoreindustries
@mobiuscoreindustries Месяц назад
The reason is simply that these navies were actually seeing combat and being considered as the corner stone for oversea empires. Meanwhile Russia being a mostly land based empire meant that the navy was a useful asset but not an essential or really active one. Armed forces without adversity gradually degrade and become less effective as more and more of the structure bloats or gets subverted. Errors do not get published and until they do things just keep getting worse.

As a portuguese all i have to say to russia is: just give up already. Navy is not your thing. Save the effort. Hell, russia doesnt even deserve to have ports anyway, all of them are on foreign conquered nations - Ingria, Karelia, Samiland, Konningsberg, Crimeia, Circassia, Outer Manchuria. Russia has no business at sea.
