Theories, Legends and Lore: Skyrim- What are Spriggans?
Their appearance, why they are in groves and where they come from.
Spriggans:
A rare enough type of creature, is the Spriggan. Found in 4 different forms. Spriggan, Spriggan Matron, Spriggan Earth Mother and the Burnt Spriggans. On the whole, they are hollow wooden statues that are manipulated and controlled by swarms of leaf like bees, emitting a different colour of light depending on the type of Spriggan. They are found frequenting groves and wooded areas, and we shall explore the reason why. We also take a look at their relationship with the Hagravens, and their possible origins on Solstheim.

lel m9 agreed. unlike most of the gamebryo AI in fo/tes , the cazadors don't usually "give up the hunt".. Either you kill all of them..or they kill you. shotguns work rather well in that case..

I wonder is spriggans were originally people. Like a driud type who intentionally hosted the "Bees" so long that there physical body became increasingly replaced by the woods that they inhabit. With the tap root holding the remains of the original soul. It would help explain the relation to the hagraven who traded their humanity and probably parts of their souls for power. They sacrifice the soul in taproot for more power/favor which doesn't kill the Bees/Glow but kills the body. The bees don't immediately leave like when a spriggan is killed because the body (temporally) still alive just soulless. Could also be why the taproot attract them as it a disembodied soul that they want to reconnect to a woods. And the burnt spriggons had the bees destroyed but still remain animate as the taproot is intact. They use fire magic because the bees are gone. Which would explain why they cant regenerate as the regeneration effect is the bees exhausting some reserve of nature magic to regrow damage parts the host.

It's fairly clear that Spriggans are the guardians of groves and the tools/servants used by Kynareth to interact with the mortal plane. Same way as many other creatures are the servants of either Daedra or Aedra.

Just a thought here. In the Elder Gleam's grotto, I'm pretty sure the spriggans just aren't there until you damage the tree. Spriggans sleep and hide normally until you trigger them, but not here. My hypothesis is that the Elder Gleam, or perhaps any powerful place in nature, actually generates spriggans as a defense mechanism. Those glowing green bugs are like magical white blood cells.

I found a woodcutter's axe and enchanted it with 20 points of fire damage. I then named it "Spriggan's Bane". It can two shot spriggans on legendary mode.

I honestly love Spriggans. One of my favourite enemies in game and by far the most visually stunning. I also, always believed they were just elementals. Sorta like how each of the planes have their own, so does nature. :v

You forgot to mention the one spriggan that that does not attack you. Its in a hagravens cave, inside a cage. If you let it out, it will help you kill the hagravens. but it will not attack you, (unless you attack it). then it just disappears

On the eldergleam quest if you go back to the temple of kynareth before you visit the grove a guy called Maurice Jondrelle asks if he can go with you, if you agree and take him there he offers an alternative solution so you don't harm the tree and instead get a sapling. This keeps the Spriggans passive, don't know if this would help in any way but It's a cool alternative for anyone doing the quest.

It's also kind of interesting how nirnroots properties have similarities with the spriggans. Nirnroot being able to deal damage to health and stamina AND make you invisible!

Spriggans do actually warn you when you come too close. Like animals do. But they will attack YOU when you stand still. They'll glow brighter and the "bees" will fly around them in circles agressively.

it's probably pronounced 'solst-heim' (not 'sols-theim'). 'heim' is the german(ic) word for 'home' (in older german also something like 'village') and is the suffix for many german(ic) settlement or location names - like the german city mannheim, the dutch city arnheim (although the dutch call it just arnhem) or niflheim & muspelheim from the germanic/nordic mythology.

Something that was very interesting to me, that I just saw the other day, is that a spriggan can charm an animal that the Dragonborn has raised as an undead follower. I saw this in Bloated Man's Grotto. Pretty interesting, as this is the only case I'm aware of where an undead follower is commanded, instead of just turned.

I always get the new sappling rather then hurting the mother tree, so didn't know there were Spriggans there lol. Most of the Spriggan I've studied seem to literally come out of trees or dense brush when becomeing active. Nerve racking but worth it for the screenshots. U should always look around for a chest when u find Spriggan there's always a chest.

David Forslund heart stones are more or less fragments of the heart of Lorkan. I didn't play Morowind myself but to my knowledge after Lorkan's heart was destroyed red mountain violently erupted sending pieces of Lorkan's heart flying to near by areas

That theory about the 'bees' controlling the Spriggan is pretty interesting. They also disperse and fly away when the Spriggan dies, leaving behind an empty husk of twigs. I think the Burned Spriggans are regular Spriggans that were killed and scorched by the continuous eruptions of Red Mountain. The Heart Stones bring them back to life, like they do with Ash Spawn?

Spriggans popped up in the Morrowind dlc Blood moon on the island of Solsthiem. This is why they are there when Skyrim comes around with the Dragonborn dlc. I also remember seeing spriggans in Oblivion. During the Knights of the 9 dlc, they were servants of Kynareth. This is about all I can say about them, as I know.

Hagravens are....interesting apparently they where human witches once and through magic power or just age they sorta.... mutated? There's a dedrea quest where you "marry" one of them..

They were witches that traded their souls and looks for immortality and extreme prowess in magic. This is why they look old and are all wrinkly and such. There's more to it, but that is the most of it. There are TONS of books in Skyrim that explain them very well, so it's one of the few enemies that you can learn everything about by just exploring the game and reading the books you find.

The burned Spriggans are most likely related to the Heartstones, like everything else on Solstheim that's related to fire/ash that came back to life just to try and kill you.

I would like to hear any theories and lore videos on the Skyrim Fallout 4 connection but also on the bugs in jars. That place where the alchemist died. I noticed a lot of butterflies around it. Perhaps your suppose to use the butterfly jars in that location at the Nordic altar? Not sure but the mystery is eating away at me.

In "real world" lore/fables/myth etc they are indigenous to Cornwall (southwest England), a Spriggan is a goblin like creature with a fondness for treasure, which often leads them to setting up base in ruins and castles where they guard wealth and artifacts. (as stated by thenthapple) The Spriggan is one member of Fae legend (a sub-species of fairy) who will not be winning and beauty pageants anytime soon. Spriggans are paticularly ugly in appearence often described as short little men with large feet, crooked features and bodies. Their custom dress is decorated with pieces of stone. Spriggan's are notorious child snatchers, and with their protective nature, parents have little chance for recovering their child. Spriggan's are also often thought to be responsible for bad weather, whirlwinds, and illness.Like Pixies and Will o' wisps Spriggan's enjoy leading travellers astray, however unlike pixies and will o' wisps, spriggan's do so with the intention of leading people into danger. Wew I'm pretty sure spriggans are just Aedric creatures. They definitely fit the bill. They *can* be used in service of specific Aedra, like Mara or more likely Kyne/Kynareth, however they can also just be found doing their own thing. As for why there aren't any summons for them, well, you can likely only summon dremora because the Daedric princes allow it. Also the Daedric princes are just more powerful, and by extension their Daedric creatures are more powerful, than those that belong to any Aedra. Kynareth, who is the goddess of nature, likely created the spriggans and put them in Tamriel as a way to sort of preserve and protect nature, since she probably knew that man and mer alike would be destructive with nature. Some event might have happened at some point in history to drive the spriggans away from most provinces, forcing them to skyrim and solstheim... Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk on a video that's 2 years old.

Right, a quick(possibly just a glitch) point on the Spriggans and Nettlebane. I think the event of them using there healing ability kills off their coloring upon death. And as we see when getting Nettlebane they can retain their color upon death, along with their glow. However I have experienced, and this might be a glitch, that if a Spriggan is killed before the healing effect takes place, they will retain both color and glow. So perhaps Nettlebane is simply a better designed dagger rather than the only weapon that can keep these effects. I have yet to replicate this event however due to my low level at the moment. If anyone can replicate this, then that just adds another layer to root through.

i got followed by those Faerie/tree things for bloody miles, possibly. I was travelling up to Winterhold, and I stopped for a moment befire going over the hill and despite the fact the place was a tundra, 2 Spriggans ambushed me. only explaination I can think of was they were stalking me.

Something I want to mention: There is a dungeon where a living spriggan is held captive who will help you taking down the hagraven and whoever else is left. It won't attack you afterwards, indicating they have at least some degree of sentience

There's a small theory created by an elf that suggests Lorkhan, "The All Maker," was the first daedric prince and that Nirn is just his realm of oblivion. If that theory were true, it would suggest that the spriggans are daedra of Lorkhan that still wander Nirn despite Lorkhan being "dead". This could also explain why spriggans protect some sacred grounds dedicated to the divines. Lorkhan created Nirn by tricking the other gods into giving up some of their power, the spriggans could be guarding some sort of remnants of that divine power in service to Lorkhan. That's my theory at least.

I think that maybe nirnroot is like an egg that spriggans grow from and as they age their bees are attracted to their taproot taking over the spriggan and slow mature until they reach their maturity of the blackish ones.

I think it's more likely that spriggans are magical creatures that simply have leaves/bees living in their body, in exchange they protect the spriggan.

we do know that Heart stones can be used to power people's bodies, potentially giving them life indefinitely. Perhaps burned spriggans are the result of a heart stone supplanting the taproot and swarm, granting them life but changing their nature. If memory serves burnt spriggans are usually fairly close to heart stone deposits.

Spriggans in oblivion will not attack you when wearing the boots of kynareth and kynareth is associated with nature. Also aren't spriggans a version of elnofey that are basic lesser gods/ spirits of nirn which also explains why the hagravens are interested in them for there ancient magics/ powers

Spriggans originally were indigenous to Solstheim. They were much like their Oblivion styled kind and resurrected,, not once, but three times in Morrowind. That there are "burnt spriggans" is not hard to theorize, considering there were indeed Spriggans in Solstheim. Considering the explosion of Red Mountain sent the Second Numidium (Dwarves God Attempt) all over Morrowind, the remnant power of that stone abomination, now 'heart stones', could have altered the native Spriggans much like it altered General Carius(With Ildari Dren's help of course), and created the Ash Spawn.
