"I've tried nothing, everything works." As someone with depression, that line rings so true to me. There are tons of ways I've been told I can help myself: go to the gym, change my diet, mindfulness training, meditation, thought reframing. Yet I have such little motivation for anything. That's exactly how I feel about life: lots of ways to help myself, but I lack the motivation to try it or the willpower to see things through.

Jon I know there is no cure all for depression and all that but personally as someone who has their fair share of it, I'm still very fortunate that I have areas of life to escape to where I'm largely free from that source of suffering. Hobbies that allow you to get into flow states (kinda tricky at times) are mainly what I'm referring to. Also finding a good physical environment plays a role too. Sorry if this comes across as prescriptive. I have no intentions of telling anyone what to do but only describing what helps me ✌️

@I bruh the point of depression is that you can not do anything about it. Even getting up and taking a shower is as hard as setting a new bench PR. This is what people consistently don't understand about depression, especially if they don't suffer from it themselves.

Finally a breakdown of this song that isn’t romanticizing suicide. From the first listen I immediately identified that the song was never meant to romanticize but to break down the thought process of suicidal ideation, loneliness and the way people isolate themselves. It’s easy to close off the world and feel invisible when the world at large abandons mentally ill people. There’s so many insanely deep and beautiful songs by them that are overlooked because they come off as edgy and pure shock value. Once you’re accustomed to the harsh nature, you unlock incredibly dense, introspective pieces of artwork that reflect all the grey areas of life and complexity of humans. Thank you so much for this video. This song saved my life actually. Permanently changed my perspective on suicide. I still struggle daily with suicidal thoughts and On GP is my bluebird. I always turn to it and the other track “Dilemma” when I feel I’m at rock bottom and ready to cave into my destructive tendencies. Death Grips forever!!!!!!

wow it takes a lot guts to do what you did. I am also glad that you were able to make the leap and hit the nail on the head with your analysis. Trust me, as a clinician I see a ton of people that suffer from all of the above and how people today are so lonely and by themselves. And, yes again, the isolation affects the mentally ill the most, leading to all kinds of mental health problems. I never took the shock value or edginess seriously as I wanted to look at it from those that follow the band and the band itself by breaking down the lyrics. Thank you for enjoying it so much and I am sure the band would be very pleased, how this song saved your life. Glad it changed your perspective and my final comment is don't give up and hang in there. Wishing you all the best.

You seriously did your research here. Very, very well done analysis. I also want to mention in the line where Stefan says, "I live down the street from you Noticed me, I've never seen you Wonder what the f I do Listen up, you nosy b, listen close My most recent purchase, old black rope Gonna learn how to tie it, hang it in my chamber Perfect reminder, occult I'm made of Come try it out whenever you wanna." He's also telling fans to back off from his personal life and to just let him be. All the members of Death Grips keeps their lives extremely private, so this makes sense. I also really like your interpretation of that line, though. I never thought about it that way.

I went to a show in May of this year. Even after standing in the same spot for literal hours, and a few bizarre false starts, they simply showed up, said nothing, sat down, and began to play. Despite the cacophony coming from the stage everyone around me was physically drawn towards the sound, and we all found ourselves in this sort of pure frenzy. 10/10 would go again.

From my Instagram post shortly after I saw them a second time: Death Grips was one of the craziest concerts I've ever been to, and honestly I'm humbled by how amazing the people who attended were. During the show, the entire first floor was basically violent anarchy; shoving, moshing, walls of Death, typical stuff for shows. As wild as the crowd was, there was a huge sense of brotherhood and everyone took care of each other. Get pushed too hard and fall on the floor? Someone made sure to hold people around you back so you could get up and not be trampled. As soon as the music had ended, immediately everyone started holding lost items in the air to return to their owners. Shoes, wallets, hats, glasses, you name it. To those that attended the show, please stay legend. There is nothing in my lifetime I've ever experienced like a DG show. I have seen them 3 times now and I wish I could do it every night. Death Grips honestly changed my life.

I went to one of their concerts. It was just as you described them, very minimalistic. They came on stage, Stefan took his shirt off, mumbled a quick "hello" and just got right into the music. Nothing fancy, just purple lighting through the entire show, with no real effects, one of the loudest concerts I've ever been to. Amazing energy for something so simple.

Thanks for watching and for those comments and for sharing your story. Its so interesting to me that when you just do what you do and you do it well, you dont really need anything else. The band simply comes, performs, blows everybody out the room with the energy they display and then just get up and leave and walk off. That is the definition of a true artist and a great band. Its also interesting how so much of what we do is life is based on stuff that no one really cares about or matters. These guys have figured out and it shows in their approach to music and why their concerts are so amazing. Glad that you were able to see them live and had such a good time.

The Death Grips concert was the first punk show I went to where I was swept up from the ground as quickly as I slipped and fell. The crowd's as chaotic as an ant colony that got so emotionally liberated it figured out how to dance and combine their bodies into a large blob. I felt like everyone around me was just as disillusioned by the world as I am and that I'll dance safely because of that solidarity. I didn't realize how important that show was to me until recently as I dive deeper into their discography and reminisce about being peripherally into them for too long. I'd be lying if I told you I anticipated Death Grips helping me get through this pandemic.

I've seen DG 8 times by this point and I have to say that their shows are not only the most visceral performances I've ever witnessed, but also one of the most surreal. If you are in the main crowd of the audience you will experience a wave of bodys going through the same emotional release you see DG giving when viewing them from viewing areas. Watching them is like watching a man pull the demons out from his soul and finding a sense of relief when the pain is over. The same can be said of the audience participating in the same act in the pit. For the length of the show you feel the anxiety, stress, and paranoia build up and with the visceral act of being in the pit you find release. Witnessing their act you see this in the band themselves. They do not do any banter between each other or even introduce themselves. The do their ritual, find their release, and leave freer men than when they entered the stage. Greatest shows I've ever been to.

What a descriptive way of describing them, you are a very good writer. I love the line of you stating that that its like watching a man pulling the demons out of his soul. I went to one of their concerts earlier this year. It was honestly more of a blur than a steady image to picture. The music was ear splitting and heavy, there was flashes of light and darkness, I was surrounded by a moshpit, and it felt like you didn't really have an expectation to sit down and observe their performance. The music was too loud to really appreciate, but there was more of a vibe to simply keep headbanging until your neck felt detached from your body, and everyone around you was driven into this same vibe, and I believe we were all there too simply let ourselves go. I don't think the objective was for the audience to watch their performance (not to say they don't put effort into their live performances), but I felt as if we were there to release that energy we've built up from listening to their music, and we all had this subconscious duty to exempt ourselves from our day to day lives for the one hour the concert lasted.

@brucemufson5810 5 лет назад
I think that you captured the concept perspective perfectly. I like how you wrote that it was more of a blur then a steady image to picture. It sounds as if every sense is on overload and that the ultimate goal is to let yourself go and go to a different place in your mind. I also like how you mentioned the vibe that everyone is feeling at the same time and that the goal seems to be able to let yourself go and get away from the mundane to reach a different side of yourself. You did a great job describing the show for me thank you.

I think you really nailed it with this analysis. I've seen Death Grips live twice now and the energy at their shows is truly something special. It is absolutely mesmerizing to see them do their thing on stage and the entire audience was completely on board, I saw maybe 2 phones go up during the entire show which is very rare these days. You really get the sense that seeing Death Grips live means a lot more to the people attending than just watching their favorite band perform. I would also love to see you breakdown their song "Beware" which is the opening track on their first album "Exmilitary". I believe it to be the closest thing to their "mission statement" if you could call it that. It starts with a short audio clip of Charles Manson being interviewed, talking about living life as an outlaw outside of the restraints of society. The chorus reads: "I close my eyes and seize it I clench my fists and beat it I light my torch and burn it I am the beast I worship" In my opinion, these lines perfectly encapsulate the core philosophy of the band: Unapologetically being yourself.

I was lucky enough to see them live at the Hollywood Palladium in 2017. Authentically chaotic. People were just generally letting go. Mosh pits. Running in circles. Screaming. The music was a backdrop for whatever people decided to put into the space. At one point the whole crowd was flowing sideways like the floor was warping under everyone. The set was all noise and darkness and lasers. No introductions, no closing statements. No ceremonies. They came onstage, they ripped through their set and then they left. It was 100% all about the music.

It's definitely notable that they go up on stage all silent, and just unleash a wave of immediate adrenaline and destruction with every performance. that's how it was for my experience. The entire bottom floor of the venue I was in was a mosh pit all the way up to the bar areas, and the closer you got to the front of the crowd, the tighter people were packed, truly like sardines. Some dumbass tried getting on stage and MC Ride gave him the illest kick to the chest I've ever seen in my life. I locked my keys in my car at an afterparty. I think the environment made me dissociate in a way I've never done before. The energy at a show is like a ritual.

I saw them perform live in April, and it was legitimately one of the best experiences of my life. As soon as the group entered the stage, they IMMEDIATELY started playing. No flashy introduction or build-up, just jumped right into it and did not stop until the show was over. It was borderline hypnotic, and the energy was absolutely unmatched. It was like hearing those songs for the first time all over again.

I found this just now and it's a real pleasure to see someone who understands their music and Stefan's writing so well. I've seen Death Grips three times so far, and I'd love to see them many more times. It's a performance nearly unparalleled where the audience is moving aggressively, and the audience and the performers are all sharing in the experience together. The briefest way I can describe a gig like that is "home."

What a fantastic video, obviously a lot of research went into this. It always makes me happy when people hear about the band and can see past the initial shock of their sound. I was lucky enough to go to one of their concerts and the energy was so overwhelming into was almost impossible to not be extremely "in the moment". Thank you so much for this video! It is so refreshing to find somebody who is able to approach art with patience and an open mind. As someone who has been a fan of Death Grips for years now, as someone who has talked about the band with lots people, it feels like such a huge validation to have you - someone who, I presume, became acquainted with the band while doing research for the video - pick up on same details and interpret the same lyrics the same way I did. I've been listening to all sorts of fringe music since I was 10 and let me tell you, people who are able to "get it" the same way you do without being used to it are few and far between, which is sad because I think you just proved that all it really takes is the willingness to listen. I guess I'll have to subscribe.
@brucemufson5810
@brucemufson5810 5 лет назад
Wow thank you for that great reply. You are correct in how we found out about the band. We had people comment and ask us to cover one of their songs and to just check them out. We tend to be open minded about music and things in general so this was a no brainer for us. Just for yourself who I am sure is a lot younger then me, use this thinking in your own life as well. Always stay open minded and continue to listen to fringe music and anything else that you enjoy doing. Our attitude is that if its interesting we are going to look at it. I realize the mindset is to look at the lyrics and the stage performance and faint and have a heart attack but I look at the music as the bands way of expressing themselves from what they see around them. Clearly people and a lot of people at that enjoy the music and seeing them live. They clearly have their message and they stick to it, so more power to them. Thanks for being a subscriber and yes I am now a fan.

Thank you for those nice comments, it means a lot when true fans like yourself like what we are doing, and how we presented the information. It is very easy to see why they are so popular and why their music resonates with their fan base. As I told an earlier commentator, whether its counseling or listening to music I put myself in the eyes of someone else. This way I get a different perspective and I get past my pre-conceived notions and I open myself up to understanding and awareness. I will check out the artist that you mentioned and thanks for the suggestion. The only issue is that we have gotten so many artists to review that we cant get to all of them, the way we would like too. However I will put them on our list to do in the future. Thanks again for watching and listening.

I went to a show in 2015. They started with Inanimate Sensation. The entire building bounced. The 15-17 year old internet children (redditors, pitchforkees, etc) ran away from the stage as I swam forward. Their inner light burns like the sun. It is reflected in the music. The decibels. Their grooves and lyrics entrenched as deep as cavernous mountains. It’s just too intense for people who aren’t on a certain level of acceptance of the expansive capacity of human beings.

All MC Ride did was perform, he never once spoke to the audience. I’ve spoken to several friends who’ve been to other Death Grips shows who said the same thing. I waited through another band's entire set that played before them, Health, so that I could be front row for Death Grips. The second they came on stage the crowds' energy was so insane and the mosh pit that formed in the middle of the sand-filled field was so intense that anyone who wasn't already wearing a face mask had to step out, including me. I went to a show in june and it was insane. I had kind of a panic attack right before they came out on stage, I had never had that before and had no idea what was going on. But when they started playing my anxiety started going away. By this point I was already as sweaty as I should have been by the end of the show, but I gave it all I had. I was in the front row and it was amazing. It felt just as violent as their music sounded when I first started listening to them. When it was over and I was on my way back home, I noticed I had bruises everywhere, and was so tired I felt sick (this was beacause it had been a very hectic few days before the concert too). But boy did I have fun. I got to experience the panic, pain and whatever else, that their music is packed in. I have no regrets, and I had fun.

I went to a live show in Glasgow. Absolutely insane, when they were on stage they were tight and the crowd was excellent, but the best part for me was just before. Around 10 minutes before they came on, a loud single tone played, continuously getting higher and higher in pitch, never dropping- it's called a Shepard's tone illusion, and it hyped us out. The sheer energy in the room just kept growing and growing and growing like the note, never dropping, and the anticipation was so exhilarating. When they finally did come on, all that tension was released, and the energy was palpable. Highly recommend!

I went to a concert in June and it was the best concert I’ve ever been to. They came on stage with the lighting only shining from behind them so they just appeared as dark figures on a stage. The music was extremely loud and at one point I had to step outside because my ears started hurting. The energy in the concert was insane and there was the biggest mosh pit I’ve ever seen. There was an instinctive and animalistic atmosphere as everyone there allowed themselves to to become one with the music and not care about anything else. If you get the opportunity to go to a concert of theirs, definitely go, it is such a unique experience.

Jack thanks so much for sharing. As of right now, no one who has responded to my comment about how were they live has been anything but just blown away as you clearly were. I am making it a point that if they do a show in Vegas or anyplace several hours away I will be going with my producer to see them in person and get the experience for myself as well.

I've been going to see death grips live since no love. And in every case the anticipation before the performance has set the venue in paranoia, as of the last few years theres no opening bands, no DJ. Just a synth saw wave arpegiatting , it's got an effect on the attendees. You don't know what's happening until the lights cut. By the first note, every person on the floor has been compressed together and there's nonstop energy shot to the crowd until it stops. After youll Feel elated for the rest of the night, maybe week. Once, when I seen em in Glasgow, they opened with fuck who's watching, that shit was magical.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting and sharing your stories on seeing them. You did a great job in describing what happens before the show and the mental buildup that takes place and how you feel after its all over. Delighted that you have been able to see them several times, they are a great band.

I love how you interpreted the song as a piece of emotional content and not harsh angry music, and treated the artists as humans.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Nah, I could never do that, to them or anyone else. I look at each band we cover on their own merits and I end up having huge respect for all of them and their willingness to share themselves with the audience and be so open. These guys are no different and i always end up becoming a fan.

Great video, they are my favorite band of all time and love to see a new fan. You should do a video on the band TOOL, id be very interested in hearing your take on there lyrics. Every song tackles a different philosophical question and idea and they are to metal /rock what DEATH GRIPS are to hip hop in my opinion. Even if you dont do a video I would do yourself a favor and check them out, Lateralus(album) is probably the fan favorite (mine is Aenima).

Thank you very much with your comments and yes I am now a fan LOL. I agree with you that Tool is an amazing band and have some incredible songs. As we continue to get multiple requests to review artists we are going to include them as a band to breakdown their music. Thanks for the album selections.

I saw death grips in 2015, and it was one of the most memorable and craziest shows of my life. it was transcendental. the crowd was a wall to wall mosh pit, the feeling was indescribable. it left a permanent impression on my brother and me, and I swear we both saw an alien walking in the woods later that night. it looked like a large orange sasquatch/wizard. unreal night.

Wow, thank you for sharing your story. Its continues to impress me how everyone has the same story and experience and that they will never forget that experience that they had. I am sure that the feeling was indescribable. It is so true that when a crowd acts as one then what happens is that you become a unit and everyone feeds of everyone else around them due to the energy. Glad that you and your brother were able to be there together. And as for seeing something that night, if you say that you did, then you did. Thanks again.

The concert could only be described as raw. No BS. They get on stage and do their thing. I had the feeling their performance would have been the same if the venue was packed or if they were performing to an empty room.

I missed their concert. I was at a festival, so so so excited for their show, i dont even know why because i havent been listening to them much but somehow i just really wanted to go. My friend then told me of their energy, he used to be really judging of people and sometimes really disgusted (?) maybe, but then the way he was describing it the show had made him really connected with the poeple. Maybe he didnt stop to feel demotivated by humans after that but definitely remembers death grips. For me this is one of those when i am just so dissapointed in myself that i decided not to go.

Fellow Nevadan! Thank you so much for this video! You reminded me of how much these guys inspire and excite me to create more art. I have been to four of their concerts and each one got more and more better than the last (the last one I went to was here in Las Vegas last year)! They play a 40-50 minute long set with no breaks or pauses in between. The three of them are completely locked into the music as they unleash a full sonic force of sound onto the audience that is as passionate and energetic as they are. Their concerts absolutely DO NOT compare. As long as I could remember, I never really felt like I could be myself and “let loose” with dancing or free expression. It wasn’t until I attended their gigs that I can whole-heartingly say that I felt..well, free! I should also mention that I suffer from depression-anxiety and, during the time I saw them live, I was lifted. It was going to church.

Thank you Thank you for all of your great comments that you made regarding the video and delighted that you enjoyed it so much. Wow so far you hold the record of seeing them the most times. Had i known how great they were I would have made the effort to see them in Las Vegas last year. I love it that you mentioned that when you saw them you were able to feel free, that is exactly what I pick up from the band and I feel that is the message that they want to share with all of their fans. Be yourself and be true to yourself and who you are. Thanks for your story and if you ever want to get together and meet shoot us an email. All the best.

I'm here watching this video months into the future and I'm really glad I checked this out. This past decade I've opened my world to all sorts of different music acts and I'd easily say that Death Grips is right up there with my favorites. I was just getting into high school the year they officially formed and it took only a year for me to check them out. I dismissed them for a while but the energy of their Money Store LP is what really brought me back. Life is way different for me now years later but their music has easily stood the test of time. There aren't many acts who I've listened to as much as I have with them. With all that said, I hadn't fully understood why I enjoyed them so much. The group really is genre-less, and I hadn't thought about it that way until now. There's no real way for me to describe them to people in a way that fully does their art justice. I'll always find myself excited for anything they release, that kind of comfort in artistic consistency is incredibly refreshing. I was fortunate enough to catch them at Coachella a couple years back right as they had released Bottomless Pit, they truly do let their music speak for itself. Absolutely no crowd interaction was made between songs, they kept it strictly musical. The crowd didn't mind at all, it was chaotic. Fantastic performance all the way through, they even got everyone pumped by doing their own soundcheck right before the set officially started. One of the most memorable performances I had ever seen. I don't comment much but I really wanted to put that out there. Excited to see more from this channel. Much love.

You should break down some of John Lennon’s music, a lot of music from Plastic Ono Band gets a bit personal for him maybe you can do somethin with that.

Such a great video man honestly. When MC Ride said “Look inside more then outside” it gave me chills. I actually ended up sampling it in a older track I made back in 2015. So much knowledge they carry as a band and individuals.
