Thank you for for debunking the myth that therapists make a lot of money, personally I needed to hear this because right now I’m struggling to get myself out of debt and the thought of taking out more loans to get into grad school is absolutely terrifying to me. But I know I want a job where I can support people. Congratulations on your 125K!

@@StephAnya I'm up North and reading articles about MFT and looking at job descriptions on indeed the pay actually looks pretty good ($50k - $80k ) a year. Any opinions on this? I'm going to grad school to become a licensed MFT.

As per number 1 I'll add that "therapy" is a broad term, there are a lot of different kinds of therapies (cbt, psychoanalysis, group therapy, etc), one might not work for someone but another might. But as always be sure that the method has at least proven itself to work for a diverse group and is not just a "new miracle way"

Another suggestion for finding affordable therapy is to seek out clinics at local universities that offer counseling services to the community. Majority of the time they will offer services for free for students and offer a sliding scale for people in the community.

Those are great points. To this day I'm not comfortable sharing with my parents that I see a therapist, even that it's just here and there when I feel the need. They're just that generation where you must have some serious issues or disfunction to see a therapist. It's hard, I can't help but feel ashamed. I know I should share that with them. They may never feel comfortable with me doing therapy or discussing it or just how it is going, but it might clear the air and also bring some parity, as I think they might feel they are better functioning than me. Anyway, love your channel, you're definitely gifted at what you do, and I really respect that you moved away from a more lucrative yet less satisfying career.

Some therapists are actually paid well over 110k depending if theyre Clinical Psychologists or in private practice LMFT. but youre right, most therapists make between 50k-80k max, especially LMFTs. No we shouldnt go into it because of money but we also gotta eat and pay rent lol its a tricky subject to navigate…

As powerful I say my mind is I thought I’ll never find a therapist thats good for me but man I was wrong. Both my developmental psychology and abnormal psychology professors at my college were incredible. I could speak to them about topics that regular people would tell me things I already know but they would just either take the words out my mouth or just wow me. For someone to understand exactly how you feel without you saying it is such an incredible feeling but couldn’t be with them cause I was their student. That hit me hard but I guess soon I’ll find the perfect one for me. Very difficult to be your own therapy, it’s alot of weight you end up carrying

Many people that suffer from mental health problems have those problems because they have not ditched their aspect of want which in the first place is the root of their suffering.

Also getting the LMHC/LPCC or LCMHC license is transferable between states compared to the LMFT. I think some programs do both.

Are there ways to be licensed in multiple states? Like if a therapist has moved a lot. Or are you only allowed to practice in the state you're living in?

My ex-husband and I went to marriage counseling, we also had premarital counseling, but I didn't listen when the pastor said we shouldn't get married because he wasn't ready. The couple we saw for marriage counseling were members of our church and ended almost separating because of our dysfunctional mess. The husband was always taking my exes side and believed everything he said, even when he lied about hitting me. In our last session my ex lied and said I had been cheating on him. We were at the house his mother got for him after he left me for someone else. The therapist looked at me and shock and asked me if that were true. I laughed, said no and that this was over and that I was getting a divorce, got my kids and walked out. Before I left the wife punched her husband in the arm, got their son and followed me out. We both pulled off at the same time.

You only go to therapy if something is wrong with you and therapists solve issues for you. But I like the comparison of going to therapy is like going to the gym.

I’m thinking of possibly becoming a therapist in the future, but I’m worried that I would get depressed when hearing about so many peoples awful experiences and suffering in their life. Do you ever get down from seeing so many people who are really struggling in life? Or is it worth it to you to see them get better?
@StephAnya
@StephAnya 2 года назад
Hi Margot! That’s a great question. I personally don’t struggle with compassion fatigue, but I have many friends who do. I think it mostly depends on how empathic you are. If you have difficulty separating your emotional experience from those who are close to you now, that may be an indication. However, I do think it’s possibly to learn how to compartmentalize.

I’m highly sensitive and in grad school for marriage and family therapy! I’m intentional with my schedule and how many clients I see each day or each week. Still, there’s moments where I feel impacted by my clients and I just take a moment to be aware, acknowledge it, and find a way to care for myself (bath, writing, read a book, take a nature walk, etc)

I know my views on therapist are not true but it's hard for me not to think this way. One of my fears is being figured out quickly like I'm super easy to figure out. The therapist has all the answers and looks down on you. I know I just want to feel unique and special. Also being phycological manipulated with their superior intellect. I feel extremely jealous of people who are the same age or younger than me and are smarter than me. I know everyone learns at different levels and know I'm immature. I can't go out on my own because I'm my mom's caregiver, so I feel trapped.

Hey Steph love your content. But I'm tired of seeing Better help sponsporships from youtubers...I know they're hopefully paying online you tubers well but they don't pay therapists well that are doing the work with clients and encouraged high case loads that lead to burn out. Plus during the Astro world festival they gave "a month free" for people who will be dealing with ptsd from that event for the rest of their life. Please see Therapy Jeff, he's an awesome therapist and telling the truth about how therapist are treated by them. Please be mindful of your sponsorships.

Hi Rose. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am promoting BetterHelp as a method to find a therapist. Unfortunately, as stated in the video, therapists are often underpaid across the board regardless of payer. Remember that therapists have the option not to work with Betterhelp if they’re dissatisfied with pay or hours. For those who prefer to continue seeing clients via this platform, I am promoting awareness of their services to potential clients. I have heard many many stories of people who have benefited from using BetterHelp to find a therapist and I want to be able to provide an option to those who are struggling to find one especially since my own caseload and colleague’s caseloads are completely full. I always do extensive research before a sponsorship. I sincerely appreciate your concern and advocacy for us therapists!

@@StephAnya Not being paid a livable wage to serve clients and not being weathy are two different issues. Therapists are not being paid alot for many factors including some you mentioned in your channel but for many others like yourself.....its due to their complicity. No disrespect. There's many MANY other sponsors that can be supported that help promote self development and education. If your research was thorough and extensive as you state, I wouldn't have to place this comment. (There's many therapists expressing concerns online) Thanks again for your content and I hope you consider your sponsporships more carefully in the future.

I love your videos but I'm sooo disappointed you're advertising betterhelp. :( Maybe you're just unaware it is a horrible company? They have unlicensed & religious "councilors", they post real therapist's (that aren't affiliated with them) private phone numbers then list them as unavailable so they can direct people to better help instead, betterhelp even shares data to Facebook including messaging metadata, and there are plenty more problems too. I would definitely recommend researching the company, client's stories as well as other therapist's.
