Claire is the most realistic Mom I've seen in a WHILE. I've seen a lot of shows that have either Mom Porn where mom's the most perfect mom to ever mom, or they're straight up neglegent/abusive to their kids, but Claire's just average. It's really refreshing to see averageness depicted. She loves her kids, and she fucks up, but she tries to fix it. THAT'S what makes a good mom. Trying.
@laelfelisma9659
@laelfelisma9659 Год назад
Exactly and they actually give her personality, like you said with the perfect house wife or neglectful mother they usually depict, all while keeping the show funny at the same time

I love Phil but hes quite overrated. His character is more a fantasy of what ppl want from their actual dads. Claire is much more realistic

One of my favorite scenes in the whole show is when Claire meets Alex after a day of parents in the school where she learns about all the things Alex is doing for college applications and she tells Alex "I've done it one day and I am a mess. I don't know how you do it!" And Alex just hugs her and cries.

Claire gets a lot better as the show goes on, a lot less controlling and a lot more loving. She honestly seems stressed and at the beginning Phil really doesn’t give her much chance to take a break. He’s irresponsible and it takes him awhile to realize he can be fun and also take the burden to be “serious” off of his wife by really helping her.

Claire is arguably the best parent in the show, and once she realises that Haley, Luke and Alex are totally different from her, and she can't keep controlling their lives, she gives them much needed space. She also offers to help Dylan and Haley out after they announce her pregnancy.

I love the way Alicia looks at you when you are speaking, I think nowadays a lot of people don’t pay attention when their partners talk, but Alicia looks at you with full attention on, that’s so sweet and couple goals

Not looking at the face doesn't mean not listening; personally I don't like manner of straight look at someone speaking. Ears are for hearing, not the eyes. For me constant look into eyes is intimate, so weird and uncomfortable while casual talk.

I sometimes feel sorry for Claire. Because yes Phil is nice and a great Dad but she hasnt constant Support. He steps up when things get crazy. But he is not reliable. I love Claire, she is great and can give space and advice. But I really think the parents dropped the ball on Alex. And they realized that in later seasons. They were so obsessed to get Haley and Luke on track that they forget to support Alex emotionally. Yes they cannot keep up with her intellektuelle and they dont have to, developing an interest and providing her with a network she can talk to would have been enough. On the other hand I do get why things like that happen. Just life. That is what makes the show so relateable

Yup. I was the Alex of our family. When I've brought it up my parents were super surprised, legit. My mom "you can do/ and do it all, you are a very accomplished. I never thought you needed me. I trusted you'd never fall and always been so independent." Our relationship has been better since then
@lofi7259
@lofi7259 Год назад
@@yeniramos9690 I had a similar experience with my mom. As an adult I finally told her that I felt like I didn't have enough support, and she was like "You were always so independent and strong and accomplished, it just never occurred to me that you were ever afraid of anything." On one hand, when she said that, she and I were BOTH like "But it's really dumb to assume that a child is never afraid of anything, isn't it?" But on the other hand, it was very sweet to hear from my mom how she admired my independence and determination even when I was a child. And yes, our relationship was much better after we talked about that.

Phillip is a fun, devoted and loving husband and father but he rarely has Clair’s back. He undermines her behind her back, doesn’t support her parenting and discipline, and often drops the ball on his duties by something distracting or childish. Love the guy but she had to parent him as much as their children.

I'm a Mom of 2 bio kiddos and a bonus son, and as each new addition to my family came along, and our lives changed, the self-care practices I had carefully cultivated for myself became harder and harder to continue, just by nature of our changing circumstances. It was a few years ago that I had this revelation of "wait... I can go stay at a hotel.... by myself? Without other plans, or it being needed by travel? I'm allowed to do that?" It's not the only solution, obviously, and I'm still working to find healthy ways to care for myself on a day-to-day basis while also tending to my full time job and my family... but 3-4 times a year, I book a hotel room at an affordable place one town over that I like and I just... go there. Sometimes I go hiking during the day, sometimes shopping, and sometimes I literally just sit in the peace and uninterrupted silence of a room to myself and get my upcoming plans in order, or do my budget, or read. I take a bath for as long as I want knowing there aren't 5 other people who may need to use the bathroom at any given moment. It's been a total game-changer for my mental health. I'm grateful we have the means for me to be able to do that, and that I have a family that is so supportive of me taking that crucial time for myself. My parents still don't quite understand, haha... they've been married for decades and it never would have even occurred to them to go stay at a hotel alone for no reason. It took a lot for me to come to the conclusion that it was an OK thing for me to do. So I loved hearing about Alicia going to stay at a resort by herself for a week! One of my favorite things about becoming an adult is discovering that almost all the rules are totally made up, and that we're allowed to deconstruct them, and put them back together in the ways that most make sense and best serve us all, instead of just doing the things the way we do because we always have.

Its one of my favorite shows, i love the wacky dynamic of the families and how they show a more normal, fun, stupid, embarrassing side of life. I might laugh at all the gags, but they also show the hardships of life, how to say no, and how to handle hard situations. It has also made me cry multiple times lol! This series has given me something my own family couldn't, and it has at times hit me in the face and made me realize how i was acting wrong towards others. Also im very much a Phil! My partner is like Alex hahah! The bad sides of Claire is basically my mom 😅

My biggest issue with my own parenting (outside of general impatience) is that a lot of times I will say “no” immediately because I don’t want to deal with having to set up the board game or set up the crafts and clean up and all that. But then I wait and think about it, why do we have the craft stuff if not for them to use it? Why do we have the games and puzzles? So then I change my stance because even if I’m tired or grouchy or would rather do a different activity, I’ll change my mind and say “yes”. I worry sometimes that it makes me seem like I’m not totally solid in my decisions, haha. But it’s just that I speak before I really think about it and a body at rest, etc. I’m trying to get better about thinking the request over before I answer because I think my kids deserve the thoughtfulness and ultimately doing those activities together makes us happy even if I initially didn’t want to have to get all the paint stuff out or find the particular special puzzle they want.

Can you please talk about the godforsaken "cry it out"-method? And letting babies sleep alone in dark rooms in general? Too many parents (especially Americans) still do it even though it's just barbaric and traumatizing and results in insecure attachment. (Both Claire and Phil and Cam and Mitchell do it, which is why I'm commentimg it here) What I find especially baffling is that it's actually the Nazis who invented the method. Both letting kids sleep in seperate rooms, the cry out method and not "spoiling" your kids which is actually not a thing, the more babies are held, the more stabil adults they become. The Nazis being behind it is probably enough proof that it's just a bad idea. Cause guess what? They had a whole parenting system im place they published books about so parents would follow it. But do you think they wanted emotionally healthy kids? No, they wanted emotionally dead people with no empathy that were so codependent they didn't question their orders because they saw the soldiers ranked above them as the father figures they never had. Cause those people make great soldiers in a totalitarian regime that wanted to wipe an entire religious group off the face of the earth.

I feel like this wasn't a fair look into Claire's parenting. They looked at a few very surface level clips and i could tell they haven't watched the show. Claire doesn't respect her kids privacy. She doesn't do anything for alex ever. She constantly makes fun of her daughter for being dumb. I never thought Claire was a terrible mom just not a good one. I just feel like they needed more context to accurately judge claire. Still a big fan. Not to say i dislike this episode either it was still interesting and insightful just that it wasn't a good look into Claire's parenting. Also that last clip was the only good gift she ever gave after the show made a point out of it multiple times that she is a terrible gift gifer.

I feel the only parents that agree with Clair are a Clair and think it’s cute when it’s not she’s a great mom but she also is very overbearing, lies about her past, invades their privacy then tries to justify it by caring, tries to control every aspect of their life and yes she does get better but that doesn’t honestly change the fact she was very wrong a lot I love Clair but as somebody who had a over protective mother I don’t see how y’all applaud Clair for a lot of what she does she puts even more stress on the family sometimes if you ask me

@a-the-na6901
@a-the-na6901 Год назад
Absolutely. I think she and Phil are clearly the worst parenting unit on the show. (Mitch + Cam easily is 1st place, and I still think Gloria pulls ahead) Phil is entirely permissive most of the time and puts it all on Claire. Then he decides to "put his foot down" occasionally, without trying anything good in between. And Claire! First of all, she is a Karen. I can pull evidence if need be. This comes through in her parenting: controlling, self-righteous and uptight. She and Phil neglect Alex because of her intellectual maturity. Claire spends all their energy berating Haley and Luke. When people feel attacked they defend, they don't change. Kids, colleagues, friends, whatever. They don't calmly work through the next steps for their kids. And furthermore, Claire CONSTANTLY talks to her children with a complete lack of respect. She little passive-aggressive comments under her breath, and an occasional rant. She gets some things right: she isn't ever neglectful or permissive. She does communicate well why something is wrong in her eyes, and she doesn't make her kids do the guesswork. I would list more, but a lot of it is just basic parenting. I don't hand out awards for that, because Phil and Claire still chose to have kids without working through their issues first.
