GT3. It's everywhere, and in sim racing and esports it's seemingly all anyone wants to drive.
But there might actually be some good reasons for it. Let's explore.

There are two other reasons for the popularity of GT3. From a manufacturer standpoint, they are semi-mass-manufacturing cars that the actually sell, for a profit, to actual customers. They may not be road cars and normal customer, but they are still cars and customers. GT3 (combined with GT4 and TCR) form a worthwhile profit center for some manufacturers. From a romantic standpoint, who doesn't think that it's cool that the cars all look different?

GT1 was the first real time when I recognised a race car. Before that I only really cared about road cars. Then I saw Top Gear put that Aston Martin DBR9 round the track and I was stunned by the speed and the noise. Road cars fell a bit out of my vision after that and I got a lot more into race cars. Good to hear about the path the GT3 cars took from those categories.

That description is very accurate regarding the Morgan, its just so goddamn out there in terms of design in comparison to the shapes it was surrounded by. In a way though, that's another cool things about GT3 is The Variety you can get. Yes German Domination happens abit but look at the teams running them, they tend to be kinda good (Compared to, well, literally ANYONE that attempted to run the Honda or the Lexus. Sad Japanese racing fan noises). Even then, name another professional category where you get to see Nissan's Dummy Thicc Turbo Brick on the same track as a 911, or again that Morgan on the same piece of race track as a Ferrari. You could argue that being a thing for years at the Nurburgring, but that's one race at a track where you see all sorts of..weirdness even outside the race weekend (Nothing will ever compare to the absolute surreal nature of seeing things like the A-Team Van driving around the Nordschliefe, That happened and nothing will ever make it unhappen)

CTCC switching to GT3/GT4 rules was probably the best decision they ever made. This year there where three GT3 cars in the field which doesn't sound like much but that was a third of the field which itself while small was larger then the series usually has. Granted two of them where Ferrari's that where also running in IMSA and GT America but then isn't that part of the point?

It's free to watch on RU-vid. The commentary is as good as it gets. The racing is usually enjoyable. From a manufacturer/sponsor pov it's perfect because the audience can watch the races any time without running a high risk of knowing the result and can watch repeatedly if they feel so inclined. It may lack a bit of glamour and the production may lack polish at times but it's the racing that counts. Isn't it?

GT3 won because it realized the secret other GT regulations tried to ignore: manufacturers don't care, if they ever did, about innovation, about true technical competition, about making a better car or technology. They care about getting marketing value for money, about being predictably near the front. GT3 was also the first class specifically made to cater towards amateurs with questionable skill, lots of money, and the desire to race a Ferrari, and those are the people who provide most of the budget for most of the teams racing them. I know fans like the diversity, the noise, being fun to drive, whatever, those aren't the reasons.
@Yoshik379
@Yoshik379 2 года назад
"GT3 was also the first class specifically made to cater towards amateurs with..." -Not really true actually since GT racing itself was created for amateur racing. GT3 just had the same luck as 90 *super touring* , being easily accessible for amateurs as well as providing great racing for professional drivers. That was the main point of succes of GT3. I have never been a fan of GT3, and in my opinion, the peak of GT3 was in 2012 when those cars were used in the GT1 World Championship. GT3 having driving assistants kinda still makes me think it's for amateurs. And until now, DTM and that one year of GT1 world championship were the only instances for GT3 being Pro-driver only. And in both of them, the championship ended with a lot of controversy.

GT3 is just fast enough to be exciting and challenging to drive alone, while being slow and balanced enough to facilitate wheel-to-wheel racing in almost any track you can think of. That is a balance that is hard to find in other motorsport categories, and is especially relevant for simracing

I understand but GT3 today is not what it used to be. In the 2000s they allowed hypercars and unicorns like Gumpert Apollo GT3, Mosler GT3, the scg 003, the Aquila CR1 GT3. And yes, like this guy said, even the Morgan GT3. There were different shapes, aerodynamics and original designs making the grid look more diverse. We don't have that anymore.
@fyfyi6053
@fyfyi6053 Год назад
Another problem is that modern GT3 is everywhere and they're running the same cars so it's getting really boring. In fact they even replaced DTM. For me it doesn't mean much but for any fan of DTMs original series it's a tragedy.

I don't know whether it's right for me to use the word or not, but for me the reason why GT3 holds so much appeal (aside from close racing) is because it's diversity. GT3 has a lot of varying cars, varying shapes, varying manufacturers, with different properties unique to each other. It's rarely boring to see those cars racing each other. One shape battling another, bigger against smaller, boxy against curvy. The shit looks like pulled straight from Need for Speed. It's so colorful. *And this is why GT300 holds even bigger appeal compared to the standard GT3 issue.* I rarely get that kick. The closest one I can remember is when I see varying traditional clothings from a lot of Indonesian tribes.

For real though, modern sims need more and better representation of JAF-GT300 and MC-GT300 racers. Gran Turismo is a good starting point, especially since it allows cars from almost every era and discipline from what we consider "Modern grand touring" to mingle in Group 3 (GT3, GT2, GTE, 2000's-GT1, and even Gran Turismo's own concepts, with which JAF-GT300 cars like the Subaru-BRZ will likely be pitted against in Gran Turismo 7), but ground-built mods for Assetto Corsa, RFactor 2 et al can potentially allow for those deeper cuts which most mainstream developers will tend to avoid.

Funny thing is, our first exposure to the so-called 'modern' GT3 cars was actually with Need For Speed. In the form of Shift 2: Unleashed. Minus the 430 Scuderia GT3 and 458 GT3, obvs. Back then EA actually partnered up with Speedhunters and had S2U promoted on the livery of Edward Sandstrom's no. 77 BMW Z4 GT3 ran by Schubert Motorsport. Schubert ran that livery on 2010 FIA GT3 European Championship as well as ADAC GT Masters and Blancpain Endurance Series the next year. So much fun seeing names that I knew from the race on the game itself. Sandstrom, Makowiecki, Peter Kox, and even Zak Brown. It was the best NFS game in my opinion.

Before GT3, there was the GTP class raced in Australia. It was a very successful series, as they effectively just took off the shelf Ferrari Challenge and Porsche Cup cars, BOP'd them and raced them, along with a bunch of other random brands filling out the rest of the grid. I've always assumed that series was the impetus to create the GT3 format. I do wish they'd ditch the ABS and traction control though, even if just for the Pro category. They could just introduce a subtle penalty of some sort and simply increase it every year until everyone has switched. That would avoid a sudden need to redevelop existing cars. And the penalty could be kept suitably mild as to not be a big deal for the AM cars to use if they wanted too.
@McPlayer8t
@McPlayer8t 2 года назад
Maybe they could do what the Carrera Cup does, only Pro/Am drivers are allowed to use traction control, Pro drivers have to run without it. At least that’s how it was a few years ago, I don’t follow Porsche racing that closely.

not a bad idea but the issue is that GT3 very much relies on customer teams which have already bought cars which are built in such a way that they rely on TC and ABS to be properly drivable and quick, to introduce these rules manufactures would have do a lot to support redevelopment of customer cars and older GT3s that aren't being produced anymore like the 650s or the MP4 12c would be effectively killed off

As a spectator on track I miss the sound of the GT1. The only big races I can watch now here in Eastern Germany are GT3 races. Even DTM is GT3 now, so I miss the variety and I am one of the people who moan about TCS and ABS, knowing the Porsche Cup races are more interesting because they are harder to drive.

I wish they would create GTB - Grand Touring Build. So basically manufactures and customer/ private teams alike would pick a already existing car and build it to downforce, tire, safety, bhp, power to weight, etc. regulations apply a balance of performance if necessary and go racing.

Together with GT4, GT3 is by far my favorite racing class. You simply can't predict the winners. Although some cars work better at certain tracks than on others.
