HI, Thanks so much for this video,..... I'm a 73, yr old retired zoo keeper.... In the past, I have had all he PLANTS that you mentioned, p,us a few more..... over time i got rid of them..... your video has again reminded me how GREAT, the house plant Aquarium IS.....Plus, Friends, etc. Always asking me for plants.....I am now, cutting all my house PLANTS to stick in my Aquariums.... ALL THE BEST.
Reading your comment truly made me feel happy simply because you've discovered how emotionally rewarding it is to keep & care for some of Nature's simple beauty 😊 It's so heartwarming to discover that another person truly feels content with their hobby! Best wishes to you & may your future be bring you more happiness!!!
@@snide64 thankd for the idea i might try it myself. But here in my country, the rubber band sucks, low quality and usually breaks down after a few weeks, i might use zipties tho.
@@RecycleChic i live Indonesia and most suction cups sold are low chinese quality hahaha the good ones are quite expensive, but ill try to find a suitable one, thanks for the idea!!
I have pothos and peace Lilly in my aquariums and since they established the water quality is much better! One of the peace lillies is growing on a piece of wood, which looks really good as a centerpiece. Also the roots kinda create a jungle vibe and give all the baby fish a great place to hide.
Ive heard of people useing acetate(super glue) but if you grow it over the rock/log eventually the roots will reach and try to hold on as long as it stays healthy @lilmissjoodypoody
@@Jon-mu7tn thanks! I’ve tried superglue, even ones marketed for aquariums, and found it to be a messy process that doesn’t seem to dry reliably for me. Might try using something mechanical to hold the plant in place until the roots have established instead. Thanks for the idea!
Any idea if Rosemary will work, or would that be bad for the tank? Since the herb actually has antimicrobial properties? Trying to grow more herbs in general for health reasons, but if they benefit the tank as well, it would be a win - win situation.
@@hamaarahof5712 I haven't personally tried it in a fish tank but I know rosemary cuttings will root in water fairly easily. I think they'd be fine for fish but don't quote me. I also think rosemary likes full sun and I don't quite give enough light to my tanks for it to do well... but again I've never tried it so who knows.
@@tannersimonson3781 Ah yah, good points. I did root some in a jar of water, that worked. But the Rosemary is also getting a fair amount of light. The Lucky Bamboo in the tank doesn`t, prefers low to medium lighting anyway. One day when I get brave, I might try it
@@tailfeather5213 The problem with styrofoam is that the little pellets easily break off, and look like food so some fish. They will probably just pass in a large fish but can kill small fish.
I love using houseplants as additional filters! Syngoniums and Pothos are the best for smaller tanks, but Monstera Deliciousa is a beast at removing nitrates in big tanks!
@@pedalz1234 It depends on a lot of factors. How is your tanked stocked? What is the size of the tank? How many plants are in the tank? It really only works in tanks that are lightly stocked with a lot of plants.
I am currently growing nasturtiums in my cold water aquarium. I prefer this plant because it is non toxic to cats. The nasturtiums was a self set in a pot next to the aquarium. Its grown over and into the aquarium with roots growing down to the bottom third of the tank. Fingers crossed it will flower 🌼
Other cat-safe house plants that can be grown with their roots in the water include prayer plants (which are very cool cause they close up at night like hands in a prayer motion), parlor palms, pilea, bird's nest ferns, fittonia albivenis, polka dot plants, and African violets.
Philodendrons are great and come in so many colors now. A word of caution, for those that don't know the leaves (only the leaves) are poisonous, their toxicity will not affect your fish as long as the leaves are kept out of the aquarium.
Houseplants literally saved our lives! All of our plants except the submerged plants started dying this winter. Some were 30 years old and some were brand new. One day I noticed that the plants in the guest bedroom were fine. The only difference was that we had closed off the heating vent. I called a local company, three weeks later they showed up and I heard the guy scream " Open all the God damn windows!" 😂 so a new furnace later he told me that it had been leaking a poisonous gas for at least a year and we should be dead. They refused to leave until it was done.
I’m already an avid houseplant enthusiast, with probably 50 houseplants in my 400 square foot house. I’m now in the process of setting up my first ever aquarium and I want to do a low-tech, heavily planted tank with cuttings from my houseplants helping to filter. I already have most of the plants you have so it’ll be easy. :) I’m so happy I found your channel!
Great video!! Let’s add some kitchen ingredients to the list too. Sweet potato grows wonderfully in a tank. It creates very dense floating roots and beautiful heart-shaped leaves.
Oh wow you just made this one. My neighbor grows both kinds of spider plants so I guess I better go get some. Oh and I'm blaming you for the 6 aquariums in my living room LOL. Keep up the good work and videos
You're too funny, but I get it. I've just gotten Teo more tanks as well. Each one bigger than the last, hahaaa. P.s. I have three different spider plants. All green, green with white on the outer edges, and green with a white stipe in the middle. Guess who's putting a different spider in each tank? Yep, me 🤣
Yes sir. In 2018 I put a literally cutting of Golden Pothos in my Aquarium filter. It literally had two leaves. By 2020, that cutting had grown over 20 feet long and stretched from my living room and into my my dining room, after curling around and into two other potted plants first. At the end, I actually connected them to my tank in the dining room.
Peace Lilies are by far the easiest on this list, as well as best nutrient uptake and imo the best looking! I also have a giant mother podophylum syngonium that I've been taking cuttings of to grow in my tanks. And Pothos interestingly enough will grow completely submerged, wrap a cutting around a log and although it grows slower it will root and leaf and vine completely underwater.
I love how you have done up your fish shop. It looks really magical. Can you please please make a video on how you prepare all your plants ( both the emerged & the submerged ones) before introducing them into your tanks. My main concern are bugs / any pathogens that might accidentally get introduced into the tank
It seems to be becoming very popular, growing houseplants in aquariums. 👍 I suppose when you think about it, people who keep plants in their pots do use aquarium water when watering their plants, so a win win situation. 👍🏴
10/10 video my guy. Im in the exact headspace as you regarding under water plants! My peace lily, philodendron, and pothos collection do a solid job with bio filtration and they're absolutely stunning to look at. Bro did you also know that pothos can be trained to grow UNDER WATER?I had saw on some other dudes channel that they cant breath oxygen underwater and die but that is 100% not the case. I successfully keep pothos completely submerged in all 8 of my tanks and have done so for 1.5 years now. So vibrant and green and my fish and frogs love it!!! You should test it out and do a video on it. I feel like most people arent aware! If you do, just know that the Pothos will shed a few leaves during the acclimation period but once those root balls start to sprout in a few weeks, it will stabilize and eventually even grow new leaves underwater! ( :
Always a good idea, I like to put a small pot / basket of scoria gravel as a base. This helps with providing mineral nutrient to the plant that they may not always get from the water.
Dwarf water lettuce does this for me .. one or 2 in there and within 2 weeks surface is full of them .. I just pass them on to the shop and he gives them to customers with newer tanks to help
Also, the umbrella plant, schefflera. It grows like crazy in my tanks, it takes some time before it roots, but when it does it loves to grow in water. And the roots are really beautiful. I have it in all my betta tanks….
Broooo hands down my favorite channel!!! Also to watch your progression has been so cool. Keep the great content coming. I always mention you when talking to new fish keepers on where to get educated about fish.
Alocasia does great in low light, water set ups, and they are shaped pretty good for sticking out of something (plus it's an Aroid which is the same family as Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium and Epipremnum etc).
wow didn't know that you could have alocasi also in aquariums too🙂 Dosen't the bulb on it rot? How do you fasten the plants in tha aquarium? My photos always falls down in the water,
I have most those plants I can take cuttings from and place in my tanks . Nick have you tried the glasses for colour blindness? My friend tried them at 60 and he was in tears apparently its like a whole new world
If u have a cat beware of the peacelilly. Its pollen and leaves apparently are extremely toxic to cats. The simple act of licking the pollen off their coat can cause kidney failure.. according to the ASPCA (American RSPCA)
@@katesmiles4208 wow. I didn't know that. If it is dangerous for cats, so it could be dangerous for human too. I should reduce the use of this plant. Thanks for the information.
When I kept a betta in a 2 gallon bowl, I had a pothos vine in the water and it was wonderful. The fish LOVED swimming around the roots and the plant grew really well. It didn't mind his bubble nest, either. Pothos handles excess moisture really well.
I've used Golden Pothos in guppy/betta low tech tanks ❤️Keeps the water absolutely pristine (aside from the weekly water changes)Currently have tonnes of Pothos with my Goldfish (till they get a bigger tank).
I do this also but I cut about a 1.5”-2” slice of grey pool noodles and then just stick the trimmed end of your cutting through it and place it at an open edge of your aquarium. It stabilizes it nicely. And like you said I have roots start in a little over a week. I’m gonna try floating an avocado seed next.
Thanks so much! I have a project in mind involving an Ikea vase and a little ecosystem. I really wanted some real plants involved but wasn't sure what types to add!
Before I started aquarium I had many plants. I did notice that if I kept them in water to develop roots, especially pothos and monstera monkey mask, I didn't have to change the water at all. And I thought there might be something interesting going on and this is nice confirmation :D very interesting approach
I got a little curious to what philodendron "New Yorker" was and it seems it's p. imbe and often goes by "Burle Marx" outside of Australia and New Zealand (not 100% sure but I think so. Plants can be sort of "copyrighted" and will be called different things in different countries). Thought I'd share incase someone wanted to get some for their tank and couldn't find it. PS. Might be worth getting some variegated plants and keep taking cuttings to sell, might give a little extra money for the hobby
Thank you. About a year ago I took some marbled queen pothos cuttings and put them in fish tank to root...they helped filter water so I left them there...and now are growing up wall and across window top..the original cutting leaves were 3" now growing out of aquariums, they have 8" leaves now. I do thin the roots in the tank but it's not hard to do. Creating a jungle.
I'm a big fan of using filter foam in back chambers if you've got them. Roots don't necessarily "like" light and will grow fuzzy and fluffy in an oxygen rich environment. Those fuzzy root tips will soak up exponential nutrients.
I grow peace lilies out of the weir/overflows in my reef ready tank. They grow like crazy, constantly new leaves and flowers growing. My wife is tired of getting bouquets of white lily flowers at this point. Otherwise, I grow a ton of pothos out of all my tanks, but haven't ventured much into other plants. I'll give some of these a try to change the look up a little.
Hey greetings from Spain, your content is awesome. You´re inspiring me to make future by breeding fish too. I had always been watching aquariums you tube videos and in my opion yours is the best.
So I love the bonus plant. Hahaaa someone gave me a clipping and now all my tanks have it, I even have it in pot. The roots of the arrow head and pothos that grows underwater and out is part of plant scape in one tank.
I can’t thank you enough you have helped me out tremendously my poor goldfish are in bad shape and I need to put something in the water thank you so much
This is a great video, and hadn't heard of doing this before! I have most of these plants in my home now, and am going to try this right away-Thanks for the information!!! 🙂
I'm gonna have to try out that philodendron, I love how it's splitting off everywhere, makes it easy to keep them small for aesthetics. I'm looking to move my tank under a big window so non-aquatic plants are gonna love it
I have a Monstera Deliciosa growing in my guppy bin, it's roots are growing like crazy. Need to divide it into 2 again soon. I definitely will be adding my Philidendron micans and pothos(es) to more of my setups.
THANK you, for correctly calling Adansonii the "Swiss cheese plant"! I recently learned that the Monstera Delisiosa that my mum has always called a "Split-leaf Philodendron" isn't a philodendron at all, but so many people call it the "Swiss cheese plant"! All you have to do is look at the Adansonii to know that THAT'S the Swiss cheese plant!
My wife almost killed a potted Monstera, but was able to bring it back and now it’s booming! I’m trying to steal a cutting for it, but I value my life. 😂
I have a couple pothos I was considering putting in the tank but I thought the fish would eat the roots this is amazing I've actually been wanting to do this for a long time and have several plants so today's the day
I grow a non-variegated spider plant underwater. Initially grew it semi-submerged as I didn't think it would grow, then put it fully under. Seems quite happy.
Fab info. Went shopping yesterday for plants I could grow in my aquarium along side my spider plant. Picked up a peace lily but wasn’t sure what else was ok so thanks for the shopping list 😂😊
Great plants indeed! I have Syngonium and Peace Lily in one of my tank and Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) in another tank. They are easy do grow and give a great look to the tank too
