At the edge of the solar system, far beyond Pluto, a mysterious collection of worlds can be found, worlds that you may have never heard of before, that have only been discovered in the last few decades or so. These are the solar system's potential dwarf planets as seen by the Hubble space telescope and other ground-based telescopes. Come with me, as we travel beyond the major planets and into the mysterious region that is the Kuiper belt and discover the solar system's forgotten planets.

The New Horizons flyby was especially useful because it enabled a close-up study of two dwarf planets since Pluto and Charon are more a binary pair than a primary and its moon. All the main planets with moons have the centre of gravity of the planet-moon system within the planet. The centre of gravity of the Pluto-Charon system is outside the surface of Pluto, that is, between the two binary bodies.

Correct. Which means that both Pluto and Charon orbit around an invisible spot where their center of gravity is located.

Haunua and Make Make, are at a near 90° angle from the Sun in relation to Pluto. So New Horizons could never visit them. Now Eris, and/or Sedona could be reached by New Horizons with an altered trajectory, if it had enough fuel. Although it would have taken 50% more fuel than it had to reach Pluto, and would take decades more to get there.

Love your videos. I still class Pluto as the 9th planet. I'm in my 50s and stubborn. However, although I knew of some of the so called dwarf planets ( I hate that term ). I was unaware of some of the names, so thanks very much for the education, been appreciated

I think it would be a cleaner definition to simply define the border between planets and dwarf planets at a diameter of 2000km. Pluto and Eris would bothnbe planets that way.

I can - just about - _put up with_ poor Pluto being demoted, more easily than hear Rob say "ashume" instead of assume...😢 As for Eris and co... I had heard of Charon, Make-Make and some of the others which my memory now sadly denies ...but these 'new ones' are completely unknown, & probably will also be forgotten, as being nearly 71 (in August '24) now, I have had a long time to remember planets 1 to 8, or 9... 😏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿❤️🇬🇧🙂🖖 Sorry new planets/ dwarf planets/ planetoids etc...🤔

I would not be surprised if a Moon, Mercury or Mars sized object is eventually located in or beyond the Scattered Disk. If such a large and massive body existed in the Kuiper Belt, it's presence would have been detected long ago. But if one or more of them are lurking 100 A.U. from the Sun if not several times farther out, they could still be as yet hidden worlds yet to be discovered.

So if our sun is a dwarf star and it's habitability range is over a 100 million miles, then it's safe to assume that a star 10 times the size of the sun, theoretically could have a range of over a billion miles. And the stars....so many options. There could be systems out there that harbor life, billions of miles from its center.

@@jasonparra5383 I find it very odd dwarf planets so far away from our Sun, can still be in an eclipse of it. Actually I don't think it fully aligns with physics. Gravity that strong? An entire planet? Its as if the planet itself is following the Sun.
@jasonparra5383
@jasonparra5383 3 месяца назад
@@kimsland999 Well size and distance aren’t the only factors keeping an object in orbit around a body. The orbital velocity of these objects that are so far out are so low that the sun can easily capture them. Even a Jupiter or golf ball sized object when slow or fast enough could orbit as far out as it wants.
@am74343
@am74343 2 месяца назад
@@kimsland999 Why is this difficult to understand? When the light from Celestial Body #1 is covered by Celestial Body #2, there will be an eclipse on Celestial Body #3. It has to do with light, not gravity.

It all depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet, infra-red, heat, and radioactivity coming from the star. If you're too close to any star, you'll be vaporized. Too far and you'll be frozen.

The strange thing about the rings of Quaoar is that they aren't actually next to eachother. The imagery shown is about how far the inner ring is, but the outer one around twice as far away. Also, astronomical "red" is more likely a darker beige tone, more orangish yellow rather than truly red.

If the motive for demoting Pluto was that, with all these new, similar-sized objects being discovered, it would force them all to be classified as "planets" and lead to hundreds of these "planets", then, with multitudes of these now-reclassified "dwarf planets" being discovered, does that not render the original re-classification of these objects totally pointless? Now, you don't have a hundred "planets" - you have 8 planets and 100 "DWARF planets". So what was the point? You now only have 8 "planets", but you STILL now have the same 100 other celestial objects you did before. THESE just get a slightly different designation. Does not compute. ALSO, if a "planet" or "Dwarf Planet" has to be (approximately round, Arrakoth is totally out of either classification, because it is not even CLOSE to "round". Guess we need another new classification. Might I suggest "Wierdly-Shaped Space Thingies"?

Is the native American named one's moon tidally locked to its "dwarf planet, or are both of them tidally locked with each other like Pluto, and may be a binary system? Also the egg shaped one might be that shape because it spins fast, so could that be the reason for that rings around it to be in an unusual place outside the rouche limit and gravity and its fast spin is holding on to them?

Don't forget the planet Llangison, discovered by Welsh astronomist Gwilam Parry-Jones in 1954 just before sector 8f of the Milky way. Unusually it changes shape depending in which season it is, due to the magnetic forces of its moon Llanigiron which should really be the planet as it is bigger. Due to its molecular composition it's classed as a moon. Parry-Jones and his team did visit the planet in 1974 but had to return as the couldn't land as its surface was very soft and were worried they wouldn't be able to take off again. They did bring back some ground samples and found it was made from Opel Fruit sweets. So our moon is made of cheese, it's amazing how many celestial bodies are made of food, and don't forget our sun is made from Tango fizzy orange.
