These floors looked shockingly bad. You start with something old and filthy and end with something that's absolutely stunning. Homeowners often don't realize the beauty beneath their feet. I made this video to really open the publics' eyes to what is really possible with their old hardwood floors.

Couple of those floors look like someone saved ALOT of different scraps, and spent a great a great deal of time to make fantastic one of a kind floors. I would be so proud to have something like that in my house.

No, not scraps each piece had to be carefully chosen and precisely cut. Various species of wood were used and the artisans had to make sure they would work well together and not expand and contract at different rates.

MANY years ago when I was 18, I worked for a floor layer and helped install a floor similar to the second to last floor in your video. All the pieces were precision cut and numbered by some custom hardwood supplier and all we had to do was build the puzzle. It was 9 foot diameter Sun. There was also other contractors working in this very expensive home. It took several days to piece it together. Owner called us back, there was a 6 foot arch gouged into the floor. The other contractors were cutting framing lumber on the new floor with a circular saw, blade guard stuck back and when he put it on the floor blade still spinning it skipped right across the Sun. 35 000$ just for the hardwood. Other contractors packed up and ran. Owner then paid us to sand and refinish a brand new floor. We had to remove almost a 1/4 inch/6mm. Good thing it was 3/4inch thick boards. The owner was way more chill about it than I would have been.

This is the whole point of wood floors is being able to refinish and not have to replace for a lifetime. Its nice to see peolle going back to this or using marble tile, etc. for lasting results. I live in the U.S.A. Our house is about 102 years old. We have wood floors throughout. When we bought the home 20 years ago, the first thing we did was replace all the windows. 32 windows, Yikes! Next, we pulled up all of the carpeting, and sanded the wax and wear off of the maple floors. They had some scratches, some burn marks, and we had to remove about 100 screws from the floor. (We were told the screws were to decrease the squeaky floors, LOL!) Then we carefully blended a wood look epoxy to fill in the holes, sanded and refinished, they look great!

When I was doing remodels we had a subcontractor who was fantastic with revitalizing and installing new wood floors. Was always entertaining to see the before and after. There were a couple of jobs where the owner was talked out of ripping out some scuffed up wood floors that were glad they didn't. There's nothing like a good high quality wood floor

My artist uncle bought an old barn in the '80s. He and his friend the contractor converted it in to a beautiful home. They kept whatever of the old wood they could. (I think mostly hickory?) They even kept the built-in ladders that had led to the loft. They became sort of room dividers. What they couldn't save of the floors they replaced with oak.

I see a lot of that first floor here in Chicago. The gray area in the middle is from Linoleum covering it for many decades. I once removed a vinyl tile floor and it's underlayment, to find a full sheet (about 8' x 10' as I recall) of vintage Linoleum, preserved underneath since the 1950s. Sadly, the Linoleum was badly damaged from a hundred or so underlayment nails driven through it. The Breakfast at The Ritz floor definitely looks like mahogany. I'm holding an oil finished piece right now. Color and grain is identical.

My old house had beautiful narrow board oak floors under gross looking mastic and carpet glue and two layers of filthy old carpet and their degrading pads. The mastic remover was a beast and I had to start sanding with a coarse grit and work my way finer. In the end I got beautiful wood floors, and they still look good even though they’ve taken a beating for the last 5 years with a family and two large dogs in the house. Unfortunately my upstairs rooms had only the boards of the subfloor so I had to install flooring in those rooms.

I love refinishing hardwood floors over sanding new floors, any day, I've been in the hardwood floor business for over 30 years I've refinished everything from homes to bowling alleys basketball courts to dance floors

If you sand your floors you are taking some of the wood away. Another method to refinish floors after your initial sanding is screen and recoat. With this type of sanding you are only roughing up the surface to stick more finish on. I think many floor sanding people won't do this because the adherence of the polyurethane isn't guaranteed unless you know what went down originally, and if you ever use wax on your floors, even just once, you cannot screen and recoat it with new finish.

I love wood floors. The floors you have shown make me want to rip up my carpeting and redo my wood floors. Unfortunately, I need the carpeting to help keep the house warm.

im a painter was in charge for renovating hotel rooms in one of the oldest building in our town (build in 1596 turned into an hotel 1850s). the owner of the building/hotel sadly didn't want to spend a lot of money till i conviced him to take care of these beautifull 200 year old woodfloors. at first i thought i would never get them sanded properly because of the old oil used there and how wobbly the floor was. after i finished the first one he couldn't belive how beautiful they were and i ended up doing 10 more floors that were worth saving.

Hey man, I sanded floors for a few years and I gotta say it's one of the most satisfying jobs to see done from start to finish

I did this work for a bit. It was very satisfying. Our belt sander was a Gorilla, but the Trio looked the same. You make these floors so pretty.

We recently bought a 50s house. We had the carpet ripped up to redo the flooring and it had super pretty hardwood floors under. Sadly my husband dislikes brown floors and wanted grey. So we just had the floorers keep the hardwood protected and put out flooring over it. That way whoever gets out house next has a choice between our grey vinyl floors or the natural hardwood

Grey? Who…wants a grey floor? You did good in preserving the hardwood floor.

And vinyl is really hard wearing, atleast you’re preserving the floors beneath 😁

Love the video. I have a floor with staining and was going to cover it with carpet. After watching this I may try and have it saved depending on if it is cost affective or not.

My highschool main hall in New Zealand had indoor basketball, netball etc, and the floor was beautiful polished parquet woods of different species.. I remember admiring the artistry and workmanship, and it was well maintained I never saw any damage.

Timber should rarely be painted in my view, enjoy the natural beauty of it. These revamped floors are brilliant , sunburst one is truly a work of art.
