The best part about the current state of VR is that near ultimate/end-game type VR features are something you can actually see coming on the horizon either being designed or becoming baseline features. Things like: 180+ degree FOV, OLED/Micro-OLED with pixels alignment to prevent jaggies, no god-ray lenses, 120Hz+ defaults, industry adopted SDK's and standards for VR accessories like tracking, treadmill options, good inside-out tracking, foveated rendering, eye tracking, wireless signals even at high resolution, etc.

Honestly I don’t mind the Tuesday Newdays being on Wednesday sometimes, because usually when they are delayed to Wednesday, something BIG happened on Tuesday, which would have had to have been reported on next week. Delaying it sometimes just ensures that nothing huge is missed.

I’m actually pretty sure that the main two passthrough “eye-like” cameras are black and white and mostly depth with the middle being the color data that overlays on that. I believe that’s what Bradly said

@@ThrillSeekerVR I'd definately prefer all the cameras being colour, especially given the price the whole thing probably will come at. Using a single one just for overlaying sounds kinda weird to me, your depth sensor theory makes much more sense and hopefully, we don't need manual guardian (re-)setup anymore thanks to that... speaking of which, I wish we could edit the guardian properly (*) and not just completely redraw it from scratch. Why is that feature still so cavemanish after all those years? * Trigger to add as it is now, grip to remove, straight line mode and at least rectangle and circle shapes as well, just like fricken Paint basically and some method of just realigning the already drawn shape or having some sort of "nav fixes" like on actual INS in planes where we can just realign the whole thing in case it drifted off.

@@CakePrincessCelestia there's also the battery life to consider. Making every camera rgb will put a significant load on the battery, for no real benefit, as you only 'need' colordata for the passthrough views. As comparison, Hololens 2 has 4 b/w navigation cameras which are fairly low power and one RGB camera which is really expensive to run powerwise.

I wouldn't expect the side cams to be colour anyway, so basically it just comes down to having just 2 colour cams or 2 b/w / IR and 1 colour with some software magic going on... and as I'm writing this, I start to wonder if it would be possible to run colour cams in b/w / IR mode to save power. That would be the ideal way to do it, but I guess it's not possible (yet), otherwise they'd have gone down that road right away.

Being able to buy, repair, modify, upgrade and enhance our OWN headsets.....is the future ! People have been doing this with Automobiles for 100 years and computers for 40 years, without any crying from the manufacturers about protecting their IP and copyrights and aftermarket parts. This would give me a new focus with my 3D printers. I get tired of printing useless things :D The quest Pro , if it costs as much as you believe it will, is not worth the upgrade. There just aren't enough big titles coming. I've played almost EVERY SINGLE VR game out there and i'm a bit exhausted and taking a break. I use my Q2 to watch movies in now. I've started with the GearVR, Rift Dk1, Rift CV1, Rift S, Quest 1 and (2) Quest 2.... I'll wait 2 generations before buying anything new. I don't play console games, so i won't be getting console vr :(

With the ability to enhance that headset, my primary hope would be somehow finding OLED or other extreme contrast ratio screen replacements. The number one thing I miss from my original HTC Vive while I'm using my Valve Index is the original's OLED screen contrast ratios in dark environments. While the screen resolution was definitely worse, being able to go into Elite Dangerous and getting that near-pitch black darkness made it feel intense. The grey bleedout on Index just feels... dull, and it hurts my eyes playing in dark games because the shit contrast ratio makes everything just shades of grey. That said, I'm assuming any possible screen replacements to OLED or mini/micro-LED would cost me several hundred US dollars, so it would be more of a "use what I have now, upgrade only the screens later", which is the best part of owning and enhancing your own headsets.

I've been hoping about an open source headset for a while now, and considering I only have one eye it would be very interesting to customize it as much as possible for my use case and so on, plus it could lead to some really interesting custom projects for better cooling, better facial interface and so on, it's gonna be good

It wouldn't surprise me if people get PlayStations headset working on PC like they did the last one so if the price is decent it might be worth looking out for honestly on top of that they've been putting more and more of their exclusives on PC so it wouldn't be too surprising if they just natively support it in the future and if they do we may just see them start porting their own VR exclusives to PC at some point so I wouldn't say console VR is a total write off just yet.

I think people are more disgusted with how they are trying to completely corner the market, buying up all the technology they possibly can and keep it for themselves.

The Somniun VR One is AMAZING, because its essentialy a PC as a VR headset! If you really can change all parts easily and install whatever you want on it, it would basically be the same as changing parts and software on your PC. If more manufacturers adopt its tech, it could turn out very good for VRs future.

I thought the same thing. The issue is VR isn't standardized enough to be modular yet. Each headset so far relies on the headset working together as a whole. It will open the headset up to slight iterations which would help its longevity, but for now we are still seeing large leaps in functionality through both hardware and software.

Well…any standalone vr is still pcvr. It would be silly to create a headset that has zero standalone/cordless functionality. If valve makes another headset it 100% should be standalone. With steamvr loaded right on there by default. Standalone headsets with pcvr capability is the logical evolution of vr.

@@kiritadoshi It absolutely makes sense. You don't have to spend money on an SOC, memory, battery, or the R&D and any engineering to implement those things. These saving can be spent elsewhere like the display, lenses, or headphones, or even passed down to the consumer. I don't want the extra weight of all that when I will only use it with PCVR. I'm not even happy about the performance of my top of the line rig in VR, I want more power. Not to mention certain sacrifices with using a single USB cable to the PC on headsets like the quest. Standalone headsets will be limited by battery capacity and thermals for a long time. I don't want to wait that long to push the boundaries of resolution and refresh rate. Standalone headsets are always designed around the limitations caused by slow CPU, battery capacity, and thermals.

And I strongly believe that garden walled game stores should be a thing of the past. Its nonsense to push the metaverse and still wall in your consumers like that.

the enterprise world has been screaming out for MR colour pass through on a standalone HMD, think AR but with 3D objects that look real. Thats who this is for, while at the same time paving the way for consumer oriented AR glasses. with that said, it does seem stupid expensive. Hopefully Pico forces their hand

Self made, open source VR HMD actually is pretty interesting. Not going to lie. I already have some knowledge of 3D printing, so this is something I might consider. Quest Pro is also pretty interesting, because of how small footprint it has. It might be interesting for Full body roleplayers and VR Dancers, since you have that slight more space to move. Though I prefer Steam VR tracking for those.

I used to be quite inspired by Somnium Space when I first started visiting it, attended some interesting dev & digital design themed talks there and have seen some impressive builds in some of the 'plots'. BUT over time I started getting frustrated with the devs and the whole culture of the place, its quickly become a metaverse purely for rich speculators & big business and therefore is usually a ghost town. Also right from the get-go the devs decided not to allow users the ability to teleport apparently because they had a plan to charge people to travel via exclusively owned teleport points, so if you want to avoid paying then you literally have to walk everywhere which is extremely frickin arduous because its a huge map. There's also a crummy culture of land owners sucking free labour out of artists/designers who are interested in designing spaces but can't afford to buy the expensive plots. It can be a fun place sometimes, and to give the devs credit they're really skilled, it's impressive, but due to some poor decisions and maybe being a little early to the party I have a feeling it'll probably go down in history as a failed experiment if they don't make some big changes.

So, funny story about Somnium Space: they still claim to be part of the VRBA, or the VR Blockchain Alliance, and partnered with High Fidelity. As someone who was a contractor for High Fidelity, I can tell you that part isn't true, since High Fidelity shutdown back in 2020. So... unless they are using High Fidelity's XR audio system, that isn't up to date. By 2 years.

I'm just thankful VR seems to still be going well. I've noticed a pretty big drop in VR titles (at least genuinely high quality ones). Most of my time is still spent with H3VR, Blade and Sorcery, etc. I'm super thankful all those are still being worked on since I've not really noticed any new VR games.

Finally got Red Matter 2. It’s amazing. The puzzles are really fun and not extremely difficult like the first game. Was able to beat it without looking at walk throughs for help. I 100% recommend you buy it. Well worth the price. Also awesome having a gun to shoot at stuff.

If you have a PC and plans to spend most of your VR time on PCVR (Steam, etc.), then I wouldn't mind at all. Those features are all "must haves" only if you TRULY need deep immersion. I still get immersed enough to punch walls from time to time, and I don't even use headphones (+ wearing glasses, that kills most of FOV). Even if you don't, it would only make sense to return it IF you had cash for whatever meta asks over the new one. Welcome to the quest2 group, by the way! 😄

Thrill has made a couple videos on this topic already. VRChat's population is already down, at least on Steam... 36k peaks and 26k bottoms are down to 32k peaks and 22k bottoms, so down about 12%. Neos VR seems to have picked up like 100 of those. ChilloutVR seems to have picked up another 150. Both had huge spikes for like a week at most, and settled down to better than they were, but still nothing like VRChat's numbers. Neos has the additional issue of being heavy into blockchain and NFTs, which may have experienced the quickest cycle from extremely popular idea to extremely unpopular idea in recent history. The devs and business people have had a big split up over it, no one is sure where they are going. Again, Thrill has made a long video on this already.

Is there any news regarding Pimax's 12k Qled HMD? They seem to be a bit quiet. At first, I found all of the new features (face-, body-, inside-out- and Eye-tracking) a bit unrealistic, but now it seems like a lot of the new Headsets will have most, if not all of them, therefore I think that the 12k might actually become the best headset (feature-wise) on the market.

I would not buy the Pico for sure man. You can't trust these Chinese hardware devices. On my parent's Chinese phones, some spooky stuff happened, like TikTok installing itself on its own. If they have that kind of backdoors in smartphones, what kind of backdoors will they put in their VR headsets? These things can literally track what you look at etc

The somnium headset is super interesting for me. On one hand the headset looks great, but I do not have a good impression of Somnium. There is their connection to NTFs but it's mostly that as an engine dev I find their platform very technically lacking. Even in their marketing material they have stuff like default walk animations that don't match movement speed (litterlly 3 lines of code), generally all their marketing feels very forced where it's all to support profit rather than creativity. Recently they had a "Metaverse Fassion Show" and the avatars they were showing off could genuinely be beaten by a standard VRChat eboy avatar. The partners they have for the headset are super legit though, and there's no doubt that they have the funding to make a good headset, I just have a super hard time trusing them when from what I've seen their main product is mostly (lacking) marketing.

The VRgineers news was the eye opener for me that we’re gonna have a crazy future in VR. I’m been following vr since the Oculus DK1 but never had the chance to buy one until the quest 2 came around. If we’re gonna have innovation and competition like Vrgineers in the future, that’d be fantastic for what the baseline of a headset would look like. (I’m thinking like 20 years scale). Foveated rendering, Uber comfy head strap, better tracking that can be used in the dark, haptics on ya face, imagine if someone made them as modules so you’d be building a hmd like you build a pc. That’s awesome. Again you don’t miss, keep it up !

Do pancake lenses offer benefits besides a smaller form factor? I have a Quest 2 atm and the visual sweet spot isn't as large as I would like. Is problem this solved with pancake lenses or is foveated rendering and eye tracking the solution to that problem?

Carmack is the CTO of Oculus because Oculus is still a division under Meta (Reality Labs). Meta has its own CTO since it deals with much more tech than just VR.

I can't fully tell, but for the quest pro, is there any sort of ambient light blocking? from just looking at it, it seems like there is NOTHING on the sides next to the lenses, unless the lenses are like inlayed and the small dome around them blocks light, but it doesnt really look like that

I have a quest 1 and the tracking has gotten to be unplayable both the tracking rings have cracks but I don’t think any of the circuits are damaged should I try and send it in and maybe get it fixed or should I get a quest 2 or some other headset?

I've been wanting to get a vr headset and I've been thinking to get the valve index because it seems to be the best for gaming and already has hand tracking included which i know barely gets used but I'd still like to have it, the index also offers good audio and microphone out of the box as well as the external tracking. When i see all the new stuff coming out though i start to get conflicted because even though nothing quite has all the stuff the index has to offer in one easy kit, it seems like we're nearing an index 2 or some similar product that will offer everything the original index has and more so the 1000 spent on the index won't be as worth it when new stuff makes it obsolete

full dive itself. would have to come out to make the index "obsolete" and make the index 2 or others the only viable option. And they would have to make it cheaper for consumers. imo It would mostly be like upgrading from iphone 12 to iphone 13 for the near future. Pull the trigger and if you really feel the need to get top of the line when it does come out. Sell it then buy the new stuff. The index has a long life ahead of itself before it becomes unplayable And not worth it.

Already replied to another comment, nobody has provided a reason not to get an index on PCVR, its just too good of a package. Got mine a few weeks ago and im not seeing anyone beating it any time soon in the price range.
