I've been to Japan twice and I've never felt even remotely unsafe there, the people who live there generally don't give off a threatening aura at all. Everytime I hear about a Japanese crime it's usually absolutely vile too, which could turn into paranoia as you do wonder what some people keep under the surface in that society.
