I found a juvenile bass floating in Lake Ouachita this past December (both were still alive) that had tried to eat a bluegill that was beyond its capabilities to consume. I picked it up and removed the over sized bluegill (the bluegill didn't make it). Eventually, the bass recovered enough to swim away on its own. Y'all have a good day. 👍🇺🇸

Those youngsters can sure try to bite off more than they can chew. I really enjoy fishing Lake Ouachita. Filmed a tv show there with Mark Davis many years ago. Such fun trip and beautiful lake.

Great study, I do have one comment tho. Livescope shows that "very large bass" do indeed prey on smaller presentations if it is placed in front of them. Very small minnow baits (2.5-3 inches) are being used to catch very large bass with Livescope.

Steve, I find that the bigger bass are closer to the bottom most times. Therefor, I think depth is a factor in the size bass we catch.

More great stuff, Steve! I don’t know how you always come up with topics we all think about but no one ever addresses. A few months ago in late fall, I caught 3 bass on a 6” magdraft freestyle: a 4lb, a 2.5lb and a 1lb. The two bigger fish were hooked well but the bait was outside their mouths. The 1-pounder, however, had the bait completely down its throat, and if I closed its mouth the bait could not be seen. I’m not sure bass are the best judges of what they can actually get in their mouths, but I do know they will commit beyond their actually capability. I mean, we’ve all seen the video or still pic of the 5lb bass with a 3lb bass stuck in its mouth, right?

When it comes to water clarity,me and my brother have our best luck when it's that dark green color but my brother -in-law and a few friends love that light Brown tint a day or 2 after a hard rain

I have some real good luck in those slightly stirred up rain waters too, but really like that green hue as well. Being from up north, so many of the waters I fish are gin clear.

What about shinners, when do they spawn? Being from southwest Ohio, shinners were not in any lakes I used to fish. There in ton of these lakes down here.

Makes you wonder if the reason a jig and pig is considered a big fish bait and seems to account for a lot of big fish caught is that the skirt flaring gives the profile some nice width

That puts a lot of things in perspective Steve. I have encountered bass that have eaten a larger bluegill that got stuck in its mouth and the bass was trying to get it out. I was able to net it and get the bluegill out and save the bass. I bet that one eats more crawdad's now! I'm looking forward to your Bass Behavior Bundle. I think it will help me out a lot. Yes, it definitely changes some of my thinking on stuff. I have not bought many bluegill swimbaits yet, but I definitely plan on it now just to see how it may or may not upgrade some of the fish being caught. I'm working hard on the bundle. The dates creeping up on me. Lol.

You packed a lot of great information in this video! Thinking more about the body height of the prey really makes a lot of sense. I've gotten some dinks on big long worms before but hardly ever on a big jointed plastic sunfish imitating bait.

This confirms why often the biggest bass in a gi en body of water will be caught on a jig or spinnerbait/buzzbait. The skirt puffing out creates the profile the big bass instinctly prefer through evolution

Do panfish start spawning before bass? I know they spawn after & basically all summer. The newest smaller lake I just recently mapped out I found multiple off bluegill beds. I know they will reuse the same area but not sure exactly when they start bedding themselves? I'm not sure if big bass I saw on my electronics were there because of those beds or if they were moving up for prespawn? I'm in southern SC. I saw bass on beds in lake Murray on lower section of lake last February around this time. It may have been last week or 2 of the month. I can't remember exactly.

Different species of panfish spawn at different times. Crappie tend to spawn earlier than the largemouth in my area, but bluegills and other sunfish will spawn after the bass. Smallmouth and spots are probably spawning pretty close to the same time as the crappie.
