A bad one “Always preach the gospel and use words only when necessary.”
@kenchilton
@kenchilton Год назад
This seems appropriate as a commentary on 1 Peter 2:12. Our very lives reflect who we are and a Christian is identified by his fruit (Luke 6:43-45). Words have to be in concert with behavior (Colossians 4:5-6). If one speaks the Gospel and lives as a pagan, it is hypocrisy. Behaving properly is itself a witness and can be a key to open doors. The saying does not preclude the need to speak. The usual rendering of the saying is, "Preach the gospel at all times and when necessary, use words." It is sad that many use this "clich" 😉 to support an idea that words are not necessary at all, since it seems to have a useful point.
@jenniferwalsh1731
@jenniferwalsh1731 Год назад
This is a good one. Too many people don't live what they preach. We all need Jesus. If your Spirit is encouraged when you hear this one, that's good. We should strive to be holier in our actions, our heart, from the inside out. The words will come to. And probably less but more powerful.

Christians are _begotten_ by God, not adopted(1 Pet. 1:3). The "adoption" belief is based on translated bibles erroneously rendering "sonship" as "adoption". The Holy Spirit is the very DNA of God, as Peter so eloquently put it(2 Pet. 1:4). Having the Holy Spirit is what make someone His child.

When a new ministry, a new job, or a new relationship don't work out, it's very easy to say "Well, it wasn't God's timing" or "We didn't wait for God's timing". It is very difficult to look in the mirror and say "You know what, I (we) didn't do a good job of planning or executing that idea".

@scented-leafpelargonium3366
@@Falcon-um7vo You say: "I'd say NO real churches would accept those lifestyles, at least not after being confronted about it with Scripture" (edited). Your comment above does not seem to appear on the public platform, although I received it personally in my inbox, so not sure if it is a technical difficulty or it is purposely hidden or "edited" from view, as it does say "edited" in brackets. Nonetheless, my reply will make little sense if it is published without the original comment from yourself which engendered it, so I have re-typed it above for clarity. There seems to be a lot of disappearing comments lately, on this 'public' site. At any rate, if you are referring to people who commit adultery in the churches that I cited occurs ubiquitously without the same censure as homosexuality etc., because usually those issues are more closer to home and thus less likely to be condemned vehemently from the pulpit, then I would say from my own observation that heterosexual immorality is rarely highlighted. My own mother commited adultery when I was 12 leaving my twin brother, my father and I with nothing to eat on Christmas Day whilst she dashed down the road with my younger siater aged 7 with the roast turkey to meet the man who would eventually become her second husband. 😪 In later life she was hesitant to join the Church for the very attitude you cite above, in that she knew she would not be welcome as an adulteress into any professing Christian congregation. However, she was invited to become an elder in the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) where she was then living, and when she asked the minister about her background re re-marrying in adulterous circumstances, she was told that they needed "real people" in the church. 🙃🤯🤔 Yes, people do encounter very "real" issues in their lives that can render them inadmissible to the Christian Church, so you seem to suggest that only "real" churches would stand up enough to say "No" to their admittance. Although once a "couple" arrives at church very few would question, as heterosexual couples tend to "blend in" more successfully that the likes of a same-sex couple. The technical bar on adulterers will automatically exclude quite a chunk of heterosexual society, including those who are not atheist, so basically if one does not measure up to a certain level of morality one is not "elegible" to join the ranks of the Church, although a few may slip in. At least that solves the dilemma for some people after which they can just dwell in more detached non-atheistic secular "lifestyles," whether being "confronted by Scripture" or not. I find that even Christians who are "confronted by Scripture" on a great many matters that they may personally not upkeep in their "lifestyles," either through ignorance or by denominational interpretation, will still dismiss that confrontation and continue with the very things that have been pointed out to them, especially in the area of doctrine, observance and Scriptural TRUTH. This includes the area of many of their non-Biblical ecclesiastical man-made traditions. 😑
@Falcon-um7vo
@Falcon-um7vo Год назад
@@scented-leafpelargonium3366 I have no idea why my comment isn't showing up publicly, as it contains no profanity, links, or any key words that would trigger any sort of woke RU-vid filter. I edited it to add the clarifying prhase, "at least not after being confronted about it with Scripture". Anyone is welcome at our church, but once you become a member, you subject yourself to potential church discipline if you choose to live in unrepentant sin. We have removed several members over the years who committed adultery and refused to repent even after much counseling with the elders. It's the last resort, but one that is required according to Matthew 18:15-20. We are instructed not to avoid contact with them, but to ensure all contact is "redemptive" in nature, urging them to repent and be restored to fellowship. We're not to interact like everything is well with them. So this is not some legalistic principle of requiring perfection. We all acknowledge that we are sinners saved by grace and will continue to battle the flesh until we go to be with Jesus. The issue here is a willful pattern of unrepentant sin. To keep such members in good standing is a danger to the purity of the church and to the soul of the unrepentant sinning member.

@@saigoevangelises3072 Serving God is a by-product of first knowing and loving Him. The Apostle Paul’s chief desire was to know (ginosko - to know by experience) Him (Phil 3:10). We are not staff merely to serve but are family, adult-sons, redeemed to grow intimately more acquainted with the heart of the Father. The more a believer gets to know God, the more we love Him and want to serve Him. The Apostle Paul also wrote that we are not to “give until it hurts” but rather wrote For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have (2 Cor 8:12). My point here meaning one does not give to the point, usually through emotional appeal or manipulation, where basic bills are not are not paid and we end up actually dishonoring the name of Christ.

Not actually Christian. It was originally "the gods help those who help themselves" even "cleanliness is next to godliness" is rooted in paganism. @Miller amen !!! I recently had a small argument with another Christian...I was talking to a friend about Jesus, and another man interrupted me, to point out that His name is Yeshua, because there's no "J" in the Hebrew language...I stated that I don't believe it makes a difference if we call Him Jesus or Yeshua, and gave him an example...I asked him what he calls me, when he says hi to me, and to do it, so he said, "Hi, Andy"...I told him, my real name is Andres, which you know, but you still call me "Andy", and I still answer you !! Lol...he doesn't talk to me anymore, but I still say hi to him...God bless you, my friend 😊

There are many more verses picked from their context and misused that you could have included, like: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” or “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you” or “Ask for anything in My name” or “Money is the root of all evil” or “I can do all things through Christ” or “God works all things work together for the good of those who love him.” These are all part of a “Folk Theology” that ultimately tricks many people into a religion they think is Christianity.

@Ken Chilton I was in full agreement with your interpretation of the text, but until recently, I'm split. God is certainly not only with the believers during judgement of a sinning brother. The holy ghost has indwelt believers, so God is present with them when two or more are gathered. Consider also the text doesn't stop at two or three, "And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Matthew 18:17 KJV Is God not present with them, when they tell it to the church? Certainly, He is omni present. I believe it to be a general assertion for gathered believers that also happens to be applied to witnesses, but not limited to witness. You cannot disprove that God is not present when two or more believers are gathered in His name.

Amen - these clitches 😀 drive me bonkers. I think honestly "God is Love" (with the implied meaning that God is not wrathful and even 'forgetful' of sin) should have been #1, because that one is extremely dangerous and what many churches stick to -- some going so far as to not even mention the three-letter 's' word. Its adherents use it as a right to sin, to trade on God's grace, to have no righteous fear of Him, and to avoid the harder parts of the Bible (if they even read it in the first place). I've recently found myself reading John Bunyan and having a similar journey, whereas the path of sanctification leads to less sin, but also feeling worse -- as John MacArthur put at the end of one of his sermons (when Phil asked "Do you sin less as you get older"), John affirmed the positive, but said as much (paraphrasing) "yes you do sin less as you age and your sanctification progresses, but you also feel worse and worse because you come to a true knowledge of just how filthy your sin is." Do a study for how God treats sin: God had someone stoned to death for picking up sticks on the Sabbath, killed someone for not impregnating his dead brother's wife, killed a couple for lying about how much they sold their land, killed a prophet for staying in the wrong town, etc. True Christians should be exclaiming "oh wretched man that I am; who will save me from the body of sin? Me, the chief sinner" but the "God is Love" cliché completely obliterates that sentiment. God bless y'all!

“God helps those who help themselves”-Matthew Henry in his commentary on Joshua

Exact quote, “II. The place where he had this vision. It was by Jericho; in Jericho, so the word is; in it by faith and hope, though as yet he had not begun to lay siege to it; in it in thought and expectation; or in the fields of Jericho, hard by the city. There, it should seem, he was all alone, fearless of danger, because sure of the divine protection. There he was (some think) meditating and praying; and to those who are so employed God often graciously manifests himself. Or perhaps there he was to take a view of the city, to observe its fortifications, and contrive how to attack it; and perhaps he was at a loss within himself how to make his approaches, when God came and directed him. Note, God will help those that help themselves. Vigilantibus non dormientibus succurrit lex-The law succours those who watch, not those who sleep. Joshua was in his post as a general, when God came and made himself known as Generalissimo.”

Forgiveness is the restoration of the relationship to where it was before the sin was committed. You cannot be expected to forget, but you can be expected to love. God did not forget our sins when Christ died on the cross, but laid on him the full punishment. He put our sins far from us, as far as east from west is distant. He does not remember our sin every time he sees us, but instead sees his son's righteousness. When we look upon a brother we have forgiven, we should think of Christ and how we are forgiven. In the same way we expect God to forgive our sins, we must forgive those who sin against us, and it is only in God's love that we also can see repentance as the end of that old man and the birth of a brother.
