I am so delighted and humbled by the Thai people's humanity and uniqueness. Being a Sri Lankan Buddhist and married to a Vietnamese wife and also traveling around Indochina, it's the first time I have heard of and seeing this very localized traditional custom. I guess this VLOG deserves a million views! Thanks for bringing unique Thailand to the world. ❤❤❤

I have been to the Rural area of the Loei Province where my girlfriend lives and they cook in an open kitchen. I admit I was taken back a little at first by this, but that didn't last long at all. Like you said, I was used to the western sanitary standards. I have eaten many delicious meals now of her cooing, her mother's cooking and from the street food venders and have never gotten sick. Spending time in there has changed me, I used to be the person who wanted the have the very best of everything I buy. Now after experiencing the Thai way of life, how happy the Thai people are the sense of community, it has changed me.

This surely is one of the best episodes so far, Thai people ar so wise and kind. Blessed to be able to watch such a ceremony for close. I don't think the ceremony only lasts a few hours- when you count all the preparations etc that make for such a good community feeling, it's more like a week. Thank you for this video, Damo and Ryan.

Great video. Amazing how the villagers come together as a hive mind. We did this for my wifes grandma when we went to Thailand last year. My wife was so proud to finally be able to afford it. When she told me a band was coming with a big stage I was like OMG. I'm not one for big parties but this one was a big party as it was the first big gathering like that in her village because of Covid. I think a little money went into the District Chiefs pocket, lol. Can't wait to show my wife this video when she wakes up, you did one hell of a job Ryan!!!

My husband passed away suddenly in January in Thailand and we had a Buddhist funeral and cremation with the monks at the local temple,(nothing on this scale) we have friends both thai and English who arranged it for me and I found it so calming and peaceful. The Philippines has the same culture but we call it "bayanihan" which literally mean "everyone willingly becomes a martyr" - everybody works for free for a fellow man. This term is profoundly used to relocating a whole house and all its contents on the shoulders of men to a new location. It is also used when everyone works for a common goal.

I share with all of the comments put before me here. I am so overwhelmed with joy and happy tears. Brought to mind how we should all be honoring those who have gone before us. This was spectacular to see and the stage show reminded me of the movie, "The King and I" when Thailand was Siam and they danced with the same body and hand movements. WOW!! Your children have blessings beyond imaginations when they are able to experience these wonderful "ceremonies" and traditions. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all. Love to Damo, her parents and her family....Her Grandma has arrived safely in heaven and we can all rejoice!! WOW!! Big Love... 🤗💖🙏🛕

I am trying to catch up with watching vlogs you've posted and I just watched this one. Honestly it made me emotional to see the strong bond Thai people have with each other in local communities, all chipping in and helping out to make the ceremony special. Something many people all over the world could learn from. And special it was! In 2019 when my wife and me were in Thailand for a 3 week holiday, we also attended a local funeral in changwat Chantaburi which lasted for 3 days. It was a very special experience because I never attended one before. The ceremony they did for Damo's grandmother was huge and impressive and very to me very humbling to watch, not anywhere near the funeral I've attended. It seems like she was a well known and deeply respected member in your community? Thanks for taking us viewers with you on this special and unique occasion สาธุๆๆครับ🙏🏻

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful insight into one of the dying traditions inan Isaan village. It has been a real privelige to have been taken along on the journey. I just love the whole community joiningt together to make this happen. As regards the show in the evening, my daughter who is just about to graduate from Mahasarakham University Faculty of Fine and Dramatic Arts, oftentakes part in events like this as a way of supplementing her studies. She is an amazing dancer and sometimes the performances go on for many hours and are physically very demanding. I am so proud of her for keeping Thai traditions going. May God bless the whole family at this time of celebrating as grandmother at last finds her way to heaven 😀🙏❤

Wow, that was a fantastic mini documentary, thank you Ryan and Damo, - really, very well put together. I remember attending a similar all nighter ceremony some years ago in Buriram but not quite like this (I've not seen the playing dead part before or the construction of an actual pagoda/chedi). Damo's grandmother must have been a really highly venerated lady in the community. I always enjoy a bit of Likay / ลิเก . It's great fun to watch, especially if you do a bit of pre - reading on Thai folklore stories like Khun Chang and Khun Phaen or maybe the Ramakien derived from the Hindu epic the Ramayana + maybe a dram or two of something imbibing. Fascinating to watch the villagers switch effortlessly between at least 3 different languages (or four if you count Pali when joining in with the chanting). Thomas Hardy wrote about a similar way of life here in rural Dorset. Sadly it doesn't exist anymore and only a very few retain natural use of the dialect. I hope the rural Thai, Lao Isaan and especially the rural Upper Khmer and Kuy/Suay speaking people of the lower North East of Thailand are able to retain their unique countryside cultures, dialects and languages long into the future.

I sit here in the United States (a great country in my opinion), with my Thai wife and Thai stepdaughters and I see all the things that America will never be again. I've been to a Thai (Issan - Buriram) family dinner and to a Thai wedding. I've been in the rice fields and the tilapia fish farms. But this is an even deeper and amazing insight into real Thai community life. We will be settling down in Thailand in the near future. Seeing these videos just makes me want to make it happen sooner.

Very nice, really enjoyed this, thank you. A large village gathering with only 1 bottle of Leo and 1 bottle of Thai whiskey and both for the offering!!! My village in Petchabun it does not matter whether a funeral ceremony, wedding, young boys becoming monks, etc. The locals are always heavy into the Leo and Thai whiskey, and I mean heavy into it.

Wow , they hold their ancestors with respect which is quite refreshing to see , in the rural world it looks like they hold onto the traditions more so, the world of cities tend to think about being a faster rat . Song for the video = Tradition = Topol.

We don’t know haha but in Thai ลิเก 😊🇹🇭🙏

@@lifeinruralthailand found it... ลิเก = LIKAY; Likay is a form of popular folk theatre from Central Thailand. Its uniqueness is found in the combination of extravagant costumes with barely equipped stages and vaguely determined storylines, so that the performances depend mainly on the actors' skills of improvisation and the audiences' imagination.

Very special video. Was in Thailand twice this year for one month stays. Love pretty much everything about it. The people especially. All I think about once I get home is my next trip in October for a month. I feel more alive when I am there. Less is definitely more spiritually.

In reference to your foodborne illness statement. I’ve only been out of the United States a couple of times, Mexico and the Caribbean. I’ve eaten street food in Mexico border tones and never gotten sick, but I sure do get sick in American restaurants. People ask me how can you eat that street food when I take photos when I’m traveling? I am recovering right now from foodborne illness from something bad on a pizza of all things. I’ve literally had the scours for two days now!!! I’m so looking forward to a trip to Thailand and all over Southeast Asia . I definitely will bring my Pepto-Bismol pills lol just in case!!! This is a wonderful video. I love seeing how the community pull together. Also to not have a Director and everything still comes together. Amazing!!!
