In my time following AFL (60+ years) no one has died in the top leagues, some have died have in the minor leagues, although more likely to have been due to other reasons than being hit. In that time only one AFL player has became a Quadriplegic. Jack Crisp (Collingwood) has played 120 games straight and each year many play the full season (22 games plus finals/playoffs) without an injury.. So its no where near as bad people make out. Players go into the draft at 17/18 and the good ones play till they are 30 to 35. This year Shaun Burgoyne is 38 and playing his 20th & last season and is on 378 games. The games record holder is Brent "Boomer" Harvey (ret. in 2016) who played 432 regular games + 13 rep games. He was also only 5'7" and 165lbs, which proves that in AFL any size can play.

Okay, fellow Aussie’s who’ve played AFL... who else has had every single coach you’ve ever had tell you to “put your body on the line”? As for injuries, I think I’m 2019, my local team had at least 3-4 players injured at any one time. Kneecap dislocation, concussion, wrist fracture, rib fracture. The worst injury I’ve seen is a compression fracture in the vertebrae in the neck. Which ended a players career. And the worst I’ve experienced was a cheekbone fracture from taking an elbow to the face while picking up the ball. Every single injury I’ve ever had was AFL related, but I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Obviously there’s a bit of an issue with concussions however not nearly as bad as NFL etc. Kids grow up playing AFL without padding so they learn how to hit and be hit without getting seriously hurt where kids playing NFL due to always wearing a helmet and padding often lead with their heads, so a much bigger portion of injuries in the AFL are related to knees shoulders and ankles and muscular things like hamstrings and calves etc. There’s of course also the odd broken leg and stuff but they don’t happen all that often and a few players have dealt with broken backs, the most notable me I can think of is Dale Morris playing the 2016 grand final with a fractured vertebrae he’d suffered the week before. I think the worst injury I’ve ever witnessed was Nathan Brown getting his leg bone shattered

Just from the Lions perspective, Voss snapping both his tib and fib back in the day was gruesome to watch. As was Jonathan Brown rearranging his face 3 times over. All of those ones I witnessed live. I seem to recall Blake Caracella had to retire from a neck/spinal injury too, sadly in a game against the Lions after he was traded to Collingwood.
@darrenmoore1305

The last hit in this video was 100% legal and the call to play on was correct. The two players were both focused on contesting for the ball and so long as both players are doing that, any contact is deemed incidental and legal, regardless of how hard it is and play will continue. What will happen is that a trainer will come out to assess the player and in that situation will call for a stretcher to carry the player off. Once the stretcher crosses the boundary line, all play ceases until the player is removed from the field of play.

Sean Tyler Tv Responding to your injury questions. Most players usually with a big hit like the ones found in this video. Go off for the rest of the game. They all do a concussion test when they come off. If they pass they can choose to go back in on the next quarter or atleast 15 mins after their hit. Hardly anybody get a big I jury like broken arms etc You're more likely to damage or Injure your quad, hamstrings, ankle, and especially knees! ACL etc.

Hi there. As for injuries, yes there are a few. Mostly soft tissue injuries ie ligament damage. We do get broken bones, but not as many as you would think. If a player gets concussion they cannot go back on the field for the rest of the game, and more often that not, they aren't aloud to play the next weeks game. No deaths in AFL. Cruciate ligament injuries can keep you out of the game for a whole season.Every team has a team doctor at all games and they are very good at putting the player first not the game.

Rule changes for example are as such in recent times, protection of the player over the ball is a priority, front on contact is outlawed, if you choose to bump instead of going for the ball but go past the ball to make that contact, that is outlawed, sliding into a contest is outlawed, any contact above the shoulder, minor or severe is outlawed, placing hand/hands on an opponents back minor or severe is outlawed, dangerous tackles rules have been upgraded big time, to again, protect the head, if you choose to bump and accidentally or intentionally make above shoulder contact, you are severely penalized, Concussion is the biggest concern in the AFL and not enough is known about long term impacts of this sickening injury. Thus why everything is being done to try inhibit head injury. Also one more, interfering with an injured player is severely punishable now too.

One guy got paralyzed in the VFL which is what the AFL used to be called. Nobody died, but players have died in other leagues. They introduced a lot of new rules to reduce serious injuries in recent years because the game had gotten more dangerous as players became better athletes and other rules which made the game faster (eg more substitutes).

Easiest way to tell if it’s legal or not is if the eye was on the ball so the ones running for a mark and hit someone else it’s legal unless legs are raised to be kicked but body on body hits are fine unless the were meant to do damage

AFL Commission have worked hard to introduce concussion rules and protect head injuries. Jumping off the ground to bump someone in the head gets you higher suspensions, so it's not done as much or by accident. Like most sports with head injury, it has a huge impact upon a person's ability to stay well over the long-term when it's not managed properly. My Ma tells a story of my old man getting concussed at a game, still having a few beers afterwards and then insisting on driving her and us three kids home, sure tough, just not real bright. He got home passed out and my Ma spent the rest of the night wondering if he was dying, but did nothing. I guess maybe she'd had enough of footy by that stage...

One is 5-6 weeks off. And then about once every few weeks they have one that puts a player out for 10-12 weeks

In the modern era a lot of what you are seeing is players "acting for a free" so the actual effect of the bump\hit is often nowhere as bad as it appears. My Uncle taught me the game and he had two very explicit rules. 1. You can hit a man harder fair than foul. 2. Never go in half hearted as that is when you get hurt. I only played for about five years due to where I ended up working but followed his two simple rules and never had a personal injury during a game, though as an under 17 did end up putting a future famous Richmond player by the name of Dale Weightman out of a game. Poor bugger bounced off Terry Fogg and straight into me coming the other way, I was ready for contact and he wasn't...out like a light... Geez, did I get it from the sidelines for the rest of the match after that event :-)

You gotta remember with this video, these are the “best” hits and bumps, it’s not like this 100% of the time, you might get 1 bump like this a week on average, and that’s from 9 games/18 teams a week. Also, the injury rate isn’t so high. There is a theory that AFL players, prepare their bodies to take heavy hits, because they are playing without padding. Where as NFL players are less prepared because they expect the padding to do the bulk of the work and end up suffering more injuries, and can be worse off after their careers end. That’s not to say AFL players don’t also sustain major injuries, and can suffer effects long after their careers as well.

In the 'good old days' most of these collisions didn't even earn a free kick, but in recent years, anything that's contact to the neck or head that causes injury will probably mean a suspension for the offending player. And the same with 'sling tackles' - throwing someone to the ground - is now illegal. Having said that - there are still serious collisions which injure players and are adjudicated to be nobody's fault if both players were genuinely going for the ball.

You'd be surprised most injuries are soft tissue but there are some freak bone breaks here and there (like that leg one) but not as much as you'd think. There are penalties for these hard hits, especially if they are considered late or excessive and if they're bad like these ones then you're reported = a tribunal reviews them the next day for anything from a fine to match suspension penalties. Also there are penalties during game for dangerous plays to protect the players head etc that get updated every year (i.e no spear tackles, no sliding in if another players head is over the ball etc). In game, the other team will get a free kick or sometimes a free 50m closer to goal depending on severity (and/or player gets reported too).

Apart from accidental leg contact during a mark, (where they are supposed to be planting on the other players back or shoulders) the players aren’t allowed to contact each other’s heads. So half these incidents are definitely accidents where they’ve misjudged things. Even as accidents, the referees comb the video after and hand out stiff punishments for things like a boot or arm to the head. Players are supposed to be able to avoid colliding with each other’s head, so you see them get angry and even fights start if an opposing team member does it to you or one of your team mates. Players are *also* heavily punished for fighting/brawling, no matter the provocation. So this is very much a compilation of things going wrong, no matter if it’s kind of impressive and entertaining. And dangerous.

AFL games can be stopped for all sorts of weird reasons but not just because someone is unconscious on the field... it's not a game for the weak ;-)

That kick to the face was by another arrogant thug player named Toby Greene, the rules were changed/amended immediately after that incident and is referred to as 'the Greene rule', He was the first player to ever lead with a boot into an opponent like that and consistently attempts it, it is premeditated and had to be implemented because the rules never outlined that that was not fair play, nobody ever did it in 150 years of AFL/VFL history, and as you can imagine, extremely dangerous. and the injury rate of this sport is extreme, they change the rules each year in the attempt to lessen the likelihood of injury, but it still is very much the fear of every club and their chances of ultimate success/premiership.

Subscribing to you for your AFL content 😊 There’s research being done now into the cumulative damage of all the hits and knock outs that happen to footy players, and there’s evidence now suggesting it amounts to an acquired brain injury (if I remember correctly). I think the research was being done to support more long term care for players health after they leave the sport.

Deliberately taking out the legs while a player is going for the ball or trying to take a mark was pretty prevalent for a bit until they made "tunnelling" illegal. Do that now and you'd be suspended. Overall they protect the player going for the ball a lot more than they used to, some would even deliberately go into contests head down hoping to draw a free kick. Most of the hits in this video are illegal and will draw a free kick minimum, a few would get you suspended for at least 2 weeks.

Back in the old days like 40years ago before they made big money it was more like suburb V's suburb they would have all in brawls, like both full teams slugging it out. Can remember we threw streamers and the grounds where covered with paper, and as soon as the final siren went we would all jump the fence and run on the field, a couple of times the umpires had to be escorted off by police cause the crowd wanted to bash them for one sided bad umpiring. The sport is tame these days ,just like rugby league is a girl's game compared to years ago.

3:30 Hey Shaun, if you grew up playing the game I reckon you'd have no problems. Bear in mind these are very hard core examples and most were probably free kicks. The game was actually tougher during the seventies and eighties.
