Did you know Rowdy Roddy Piper and Kieth David choreographed that fight scene themselves? And they made it long so Carpenter could chop it up and use what he needed or liked the best. Thing was, he liked it so much because it was so fluid and believable he kept the entire scene. It's since gone on to be one of the longest and most realistic beatdowns in modern cinema history.

- This movie seems to be so under the radar, I honestly haven't personally met anyone who knows of it - and I always thought I was fairly alone in my opinion of this being the BEST fight scene I have ever seen in a movie, to this day I still think so, there are some great awesome fight scenes, however THIS fight is so extremely believable, so raw and dirty. You feel the pain of that gritty street fighting.

Next to Hulk Hogan, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was one of the most influential pro wrestlers from the 80's and 90's. He had a large part in making the WWF (now WWE) a global wrestling promotion. He was one of the first heels (bad guy) to organically turn into a babyface (good guy) because he was so f'n cool and won over the fans with his insane charisma. No one could rile up a crowd like the "Hot Rod". He briefly retired in 1987 to transition into acting, and this was one of his first roles. The "I came here to chew bubble gum and kick ass" line was also completely ad-libbed by him. He sadly passed away from a heart attack in 2015.

RIP Roddy Piper ("Rowdy" Roddy Piper), and thank you for sharing more info about his wrestling history. I love that so much. I used to watch wrestling as a kid all the time with my sister and we had a blast. I wished I remembered him, but I'm happy I got to see him in this and learn about him. He was genuinely amazing and had me smiling so much, just from pure enjoyment of his personality and delivery. It's no wonder he made up that line. Brilliant. Actually, Kurt Russell was considered for the role, but Carpenter decided to try another actor for the lead instead and when he saw Roddy Piper on Wrestlemania 3 he decided to give Roddy the role. The "Bubblegum and kick ass" line was something Piper had come up with for a possible promo (in wrestling term meaning doing a line/monologue) and when Carpenter asked Piper If he had something to say for the bank scene, Piper showed that line and Carpenter liked it. The fight scene between Piper and Keith David was originally suppose to be shorter, but Carpenter was so impressed by their fight choreography that he decided to make it a little bit longer.

The reason John Carpenter got Roddy Piper to star in this film is because Carpenter was a huge fan of pro-wrestling. He met up with Piper backstage at WrestleMania 3 and asked him if he'd be interested in starring in this movie. In fact, the "kick ass, chew bubble gum" line was adlibbed by Piper. Apparently it was one of those sayings wrestlers said to trash talk each other in their promos.

The credits for Roddy was a joke and a tribute. There have been movies like My name is Nobody, or characters credited as The Man with No Name (also a movie title), so for John Carpenter's main character, he followed suit. Nada, is Spanish for nothing, so when asked what name to put in the credits for Piper's character, Carpenter simply replied Nada. Roddy was one of my favorite wrestlers when I was young. He was one of the nicest and most generous people you could ever meet. Gone too soon, RIP sir. John Carpenter wrote the music for most of his films, the man was a genius, he helped create and develop some of the early synthesizers. John's movies are great, even back to his first one, 1974's "Dark Star" (cult classic), followed by a few major films, including "The Fog" which had Jamie Lee Curtis debuting and working with her mom Janet Lee for the first time. It also starred Adrienne Barbeau, who John would use the following year in the movie "Escape From New York" which stars Kurt Russell. This is one of my all time favorites. So, I thought I'd throw those out there for you to possibly check out, they seem to be along the lines of what you like to watch. Anyway, loved the review, love you and tell Boo hi 👋.

@@AngelGroves I love Rowdy Rodder Piper RIP, I feel like it was a great descision to cast him in this though, they wrote the character very smartly to play at Piper's strengths, namely, Talking smack and one liners from his wrestling career, so they didn't need some thespian, shakespearean actor to convey the story, and since he had tons of experience wrestling he knew how to throw punches, kicks, etc in a way that looks very real, but doesn't actually injure anyone, I'm not sure if you've seen it already but the Longest Yard remake with Adam Sandler has a bunch of wrestlers in it and it uses their physicality similarly. Also they said the long fight with Keith and Piper was made that long on purpose to show how hard it is to convince someone whos mind is already made up.

They Live came out when I was in High School. It was the first movie I paid to see twice in its first run, which only lasted 2 weeks. Back then, there was no guarantee you'd see the video rental market pick up a movie like this at all, and it might be years before I'd see it again. For some equally absurd 80s weirdness, check out Alex Cox's Repo Man, 1984. A very young Emilio Estevez stars with Harry Dean Stanton in one of the great cult sci fi movies of all time. Sometimes people just explode.

I still remember where and how I got to watch this the first time. Back in 1989, I went to a video club that was relatively new in the area. I saw the "box" and knowing nothing about the film, i decided to rent it. It was late at night and it was a fantastic experience. While the political messages were there, I always saw it first and foremost as an alien invasion sci-fi film than anything else. Still one of my top 10 movies of all time. Also John Carpenter quickly rose to becoming my top filmmaker together with Ridley Scott, although edging him out a bit. And Piper really really liked her eyes. That is made clear in the DVD commentary.

Hey, thanks for sharing; your comment made me so happy! I love little backstories and experiences like that. Some of my favorite experiences with movies have been similar (renting the tape or DVD/not knowing). I feel the same with the movie. I really appreciated and enjoyed the subtext, and think he is brilliant with his writing, but the Carpenter sci-fi/alien element is my favorite part. He does all of it so well, really! Oh cool, I really want to check out the DVD commentary, now. Thanks, again, for sharing!

@@AngelGroves You made my day. It so good to see someone else feeling the same about this movie. Kind of tired of always hearing people giving the sci-fi plot not enough attention. Thank you.

Slavoj Zizek did a fantastic breakdown of the alley fight scene in "The Pervert's Guide to Ideology." The point is that recognizing you are conditioned by ideology is painful and many will resist the burden of this knowledge to the point of violence. He also likes the idea that you have to put the glasses on to recognize ideology, because ideology is so pervasive that it's our de facto state of mind.

@David Terhune Aw. Wow. You're awesome, thanks for such a kind comment! That makes me so happy you liked the reaction; this movie is so brilliant, and I can't believe I hadn't heard of it before, but I'm glad I got to watch it, now. YES, that music is one that right this second I can start doing the beat in my head and just grin. That fight scene...I'm not sure if one can beat it, in my book. It had it all. This movie is just an all around well made movie. I've loved Carpenter's Kurt Russell movies and Halloween for so long, and I'm happy I'm getting to see his other works, now. I had NO idea I'd like all his stuff so much. Thanks, again, for your comment, and I'll see you soon for the next video! :) I'm glad you're here at the start of the channel!

If you like Keith David, have I got a deal for you! Ha! Just kidding, but I do have a personal favorite that he's in that I can't get anyone to react to, but I saw you're reaction to "Parenthood", so maybe you'd be open to it. "Article 99" is a movie about a veterans hospital from the 90s, directed by Howard Deutch, that has a pretty amazing ensemble cast of Kiefer Sutherland, Ray Liotta, Lea Thompson, Forest Whitaker, John C McKinley, John Mahooney, and then some, and Keith David plays a Vietnam Vet in it. I don't know if Keith David ever really was in Vietnam. I don't think he was, but he's been in Vietnam movies or played a Vietnam vet enough times. He was in Oliver Stone's "Platoon", which is a classic if you haven't seen it. He was in "Off Limits", which is an 80s flick I like where Willem Dafoe and Gregory Hines are military police detectives trying to solve murders in Saigon during the war. He played a Vietnam vet in "Men At Work" which was a wacky indy comedy with brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Esteves from the 90s. That's just a few that came to mind that you might want to check out.

Hey you're wearing my favorite shirt, looks good on you Angel hehe and love your hair wow it's so long😊 @21:15 gotta a cramp from the cat? haha He loves to sleep on you huh? and your reaction to the long fight, it's hilariously over the top and one of the longest fights in a movie. Loved your reaction to Holly killing Frank at the end haha. Love your breakdowns too Angel! I can kind of hear your little accent, you're from Georgia right? That's so cool a lot of things are filmed there. I think the concept of this movie was ahead of it's time, I think of now more than the past with this kind of stuff and how everyone is being watched by big brother and such, how if we think differently with some topics people get cancelled, blacklisted, ruined etc you know what I mean? lol I always think of the crazy times we're living in now days that They Live and Demolition Man predicted what we are now haha. Ever see Demolition man? Highly recommend! That lady the one with stiff acting was also the same actress in He-Man with Dolph Lundgren she played Evil Lynn one of the bad characters lol. Also for John Carpenter films, I'd recommend the movie Big Trouble in Little China it's one of the movies that inspired Mortal Kombat in some ways, I don't want to say how or why but you'll see. Also, I don't know if you noticed but the main organizer guy of the human resistance group with the glasses was the same actor who played Johnny Cage's Master Boyd that Shang Tsung(Cary Tanaga) was impersonating in the beginning of Mortal Kombat.😉 Also your earrings is that Bomb-Bomb from Super Mario Bros? Hard to tell lol. Oh, before I forget my TMNT Cowabunga Collection video I gave you a shoutout because you're so awesome!😁

Yesss! I of course knew you liked the shirt. haha. What's not to like, though. Right? Yep, Boo tends to love to lie down on my lap, then I feel bad for waking him, and I'll just end up with my legs and feet completely asleep or have horrible cramps..or both. *sigh* He's lucky I love him so much. I've never seen Demolition Man (it's on my list!), but yeah, I couldn't agree with you more; this was definitely ahead of it's time and I love concept as well. It great Carpenter was able to put that concept in such an all around well made and still really fun movie. He's awesome. DUDE, Big Trouble In Little China is MY FAVORITE John Carpenter movie!!! I actually mention it during the Mortal Kombat reaction (quickly at one point when it first shows Lambert), so that makes perfect sense. Nice. "the main organizer guy of the human resistance group with the glasses was the same actor who played Johnny Cage's Master Boyd that Shang Tsung(Cary Tanaga) was impersonating in the beginning of Mortal Kombat" WHAAAT??? No I did not notice that! haha. But he looked familiar...now, I know why. Sweet. Thanks for sharing. My earrings are black and white maneki-neko style cats, but I can see how they look like Bomb-ombs and now I wish I had some of those too! I'll have to get some. I JUST saw the notification for your TMNT video this morning and thought "That's awesome!!", because I loved TMNT so much (still do). Getting on to respond to comments is my first time getting on RU-vid in a couple days, because I had so much else going on, but I'll be checking out your video soon. And what?!? Oh my gosh, you gave me a shout-out? That's seriously so awesome. You're the best! I'll have to do the same. :) Thanks, again, as always, for watching and commenting. See you soon for the next one, and I look forward to your TMNT video I'll be watching soon.

@@AngelGroves Oh yeah I agree, cute chick in an MK shirt with a funny little cat? What's not to like? Exactly! hahaha😉😛 Oh ok I must have missed you saying that part, nice ok you saw BTLC. Cool, yeah the MK creators admitted they took some ideas from it too Raiden's look and the powers are one of them though Raiden is way more powerful than the 3 storm guys lol but yeah. Oh ok cool, all good I won't say anything else then about Demolition Man. But yeah can't wait to see your reaction to that one haha!! Yep anytime, I was wondering if you'd recognize that guy or not haha. Just picture him with a beard, a little heavier like in the Johnny Cage scene haha. Oh all good I know what you mean life can get busy sometimes, hope you're healthy and doing well! Yeah I just put it up the other day haha, I had pre-ordered it months ago when it came out but Target kind of screwed me(ironic since I used to work there too for a few years) but I get into all that in the video lol I have chapters as well so if you don't want to sit through my 5 minute intro all good lol. In a way that was good since I got it for cheaper! I had the stock game already, I just wanted that edition being an 80's and 90's kid big TMNT fan too! Oh you're welcome I think you're awesome and have a great channel you deserve way more subs plus you're cool. :P All the cool chicks always live outside of NYC haha Anyway all good no rush, you don't have to do that, lol 😊

That fight scene in the script was page after page of blank sheets that only said "fight continues" greatest fight scene and most justifiable in movie history! I know I may be alone on this but I really don't except this as a satire. I see it as a cautionary tale. Everytime I see someone watch this for the first time with no prep, I laugh in utter enjoyment thinking back to the first time I saw it!
