James Brolin was a very well known actor of the 70's & 80's. His son is actor Josh Brolin. They look a little like each other. Maybe that's why he looked familiar? I saw this movie in the theatre as a teen. EVERYBODY screamed during the Large Marge face surprise!

Ohhhh, yep that it absolutely why he looked so familiar...Josh looks so much like him! And why his name sounded familiar. It sounds so similar to his as well, and plus, I'm sure I've also seen him in some of his other work at some point. Seeing this in the theater as a teen would have seriously been a treat. That's awesome, and LOL, I wish I could have been there for the Large Marge reaction then. :)

I think that Pee Wee's aversion to Dottie's affection was meant to appeal to young children. As a young boy I hated (pretended to) hate the advances of girls. I think Pee Wee's behaviour reflects that of a young child so this is a natural reaction from him.

Another reviewer reflected on how she was totally crushing 😍 on him and they were voicing it over with more "adult lines" and it was funny and that seemed Natural too.... 😄 both were funny because as an adult you can laugh at what an ass he was too because you didn't realize as a kid, I mean you knew 😉 but you didn't KNOW.

Paul Reubens started out as a comedian and Pee Wee was a crazy character he made up, but it was an adult, raunchy character. But as the character got famous he was tweaked and toned down for kids, that's why Pee Wee has an underlying adult humor. Not as naughty as he originally was, obviously, but you can still get a glimpse of the old character underneath it all. Great reaction, Angel! Your reactions are like no other.

Kid in 85 or 86. I always loved the giant tub scene! Fast forward to 1998 I was riding my bike home from Wendy's @ 2 am I saw 👀 smoke and flickering from a pet shop, I tried to kick the door 🚪 in and ram it w/shoulder, no luck I was wimpy then ! A 6'4" tattooed guy stopped we did it together, flames came out, he looked at me, I at him. Are you going inside? Are you? Then he says "No" and "Ahhhhh 🐍 Snakes" rolling his eyes in his best Pee Wee Voice and we crossed the street....

As a kid, the Large Marge scene was my favorite scene in the whole movie. My best friend and I would crack up and literally roll on the floor laughing. Never scared me in the slightest haha. And Tequila, that was just too good that dance scene.

4:29 - by the way, this piece of music (by Danny Elfman) is called "Breakfast Machine". It's the best! (And I think you were trying to think of "Rube Goldberg Machine". Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist who drew cartoons of those overly complicated machines that performed basic tasks like adding salt to a plate of eggs or something like that.)

He really IS like the original Buddy the Elf, never thought about that. I worked in a video rental store when this came out and the scene where Large Marge changes format in the truck cab, the video people in the store kept playing that section over and over again. It was on the TV system hanging on the wall of the store

I'd driven all night...( after working a swing-shift...)...from northern CA to South Lake Tahoe. It was my 30th birthday & I wanted to get my weekend started. There were still a few hours to kill, before I could check in to my room...so I decided to spend them at the early matinee. I was literally the ONLY one in the theater. I believe it was opening day. Had a couple of McDonald's hamburgers in my jacket pocket as I settled into my seat. I enjoyed the film. In fact, In 2002 I bought myself a 1955 retro Schwinn bicycle, because it sort of reminded me of Pee Wee's bike. Still have it, but that thing weighs 50 lbs.

yup saw this as a kid. pee-wee's playhouse (tv show) exploded with this movie. Large Marge scared me when I was younger lol. I havn't seen this for a long time but for some reason it's very easy to remember so much from this movie. His other movie thou Big Top PeeWee I don't remember a thing from it.

James Brolin was on the TV shows Marcus Welby M.D. in the 70’s and Hotel in the 80’s. He was a big heartthrob back then. He’s probably best known to modern audiences for his over-the-top performance as the freaked-out father in the original Amityville Horror. He’s also the father of the famous actor, Josh Brolin (who was in Goonies and No Country For Old Men, among many other things), and has been married to Barbra Streisand since the late-90’s.

I think what is appealing about the story is shows the importance of friends (think of everyone who came together to support each other in different ways throughtout the film) as well as Pee Wee's Zen mindset: he is able to see beauty in things most people ignore. On another note, I just realized James Brolin (who plays P.W. in the movie) is Josh Brolin's (The Goonies) father.

I was seven years old when this was released. My best friend and I watched on VHS many times. This movie arrived at the perfect time in our lives and when I watch it now I can't help but smile and yet simultaneously I am melancholy with thoughts of how quickly childhood comes to an end.

His son, Josh Brolin was the older brother in the Goonie's, and was the younger version of the special agent, K in Men in Black 3. His 80s Saturday Morning show, Pee Wee's Play House... is kinda like this but even more manic and insane. ShoutFactory recently remastered that whole show in HD (becusse luckily it was shot on film) and it looks absolutley gorgeous. That show was a HUUUUGE deal in the mid to late 80s.

Also, James Brolin(Thanos' dad) and Morgan Fairchild were the king and queen of mini-series/TV movies/night time soaps in the roles of the "beautiful people" and the audience HOWLED when they appeared as "Pee Wee" and "Dottie." From time to time, I still do the "Paging Mister Herman. You have a telephone call in the lobby," and "I say we let 'em go..."

The kid at 41:10, you were right. That's the actor Jason Hervey who played Wayne Arnold, Kevin Arnold's brother in The Wonder Years. Another classic show. This was Tim Burton's first full feature length movie that he directed. I grew up watching this movie as a kid back then. Seen this movie a million times.

Paul Reubens was a night club stand-up comedian who invented the character "Pee Wee Herman" as a raunchy, adult-themed parody of children's entertainers. Then a talent agent saw his stand-up act one night and thought he could make "Pee Wee Herman" an actual children's entertainer. So he convinced Reubens to cut out the tongue-in-cheek adult-themed jokes and play Pee Wee straight, as well as to take on the persona of the character in all public appearances. And the money was right, so he agreed. So just like Andrew Silverstein became "Andrew Dice Clay" and Daniel Whitney became "Larry the Cable Guy," Paul Reubens became "Pee Wee Herman." And people who only ever knew him as Pee Wee Herman -- like me, before I learned all of this -- were shocked to find out that he was once a very raunchy, adult-themed stand-up comedian. And it also makes the fact that he was later busted for indecent exposure in a porno theater and possession of kiddie porn a lot more easy to digest.

"I know you are but what am I" might be cringe, but that shit had me laughing like crazy when I was 6. Large Marge traumatized me as a child. This is Tim Burton's first feature length film and the DVD commentary is entertaining, it's Paul Reubens and Tim Burton. I used to love Pee-wee's Playhouse too. I think I've seen like one other person on youtube reacting to this movie, so that's an instant sub from me.

I think I first saw this movie when I was 5, and was obsessed!. Large Marge terrified me so much, though, that I would leave the room when Pee Wee climbed into the truck. 😂Last summer I bought a red 50's reproduction bike at a yard sale simply because it reminded me of Pee Wee's bike without all the cool gadgets. I had to have it! Also, I love that you know Pee Wee from the reference in Overboard! Another one of my favorites. If you haven't seen The Jerk with Steve Martin, I recommend it for a similar dose of silliness. 😊

My first memory of Pee-Wee was on an HBO comedy special that was perfrmed on-stage in 1981, called "The Pee-Wee Herman Show". Pee-Wee was very childlike and innocent, but several of the other players who appeared made quite risque jokes that went over Pee-Wee's head, which was part of the fun. It was loosely inspired by the live-audience children's shows of the 1950s, and featured such beloved '80s personalities as Edie McClurg and Phil Hartman.

Gen X teen in the 80's and we all thought this movie was hysterical! Pee Wee's kitchen, Large Marge, and the Tequila dance were favorite parts. James Brolin starred in the original Amityville Horror and is now married to Barbara Streisand. Elizabeth Daily can also be found in Valley Girl (starring a young, HOT Nicholas Cage), Better Off Dead, and as the voice of Tommy Pickles in Rugrats.

I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out and someone sitting in the back COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING during the whole opening/waking up sequence at the beginning. I mean, that kind of "laughing so hard you can't breath" type of laughing. And we all started laughing at HIM - it was hilarious. By the way, his Saturday morning TV show aired when I was in college - and I remember it was extremely popular with a bunch of my friends at the time. (And, fun fact, that's Cyndi Lauper's (uncredited) voice singing the theme song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UsmFg7CD1Pg.html ) You might like to check out the evolution of the Pee-wee Herman character - I remember he started as a live stage show, "The Pee-wee Herman Show". HBO taped a live performance and showed it as a comedy special. I think "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" came next. And then there was the Saturday morning kids' show "Pee-wee's Playhouse". Later there was another movie "Big Top Pee-wee". I think you can find all of those iterations on DVD (I don't know about streaming).

Oh my gosh, nice; thank you for that info. I definitely want to check out the evolution of him. He is way more interesting than I thought and it will be cool to learn more. Perfect! Oh wow, I'm glad the person in the theater was at least amusing and everyone could laugh at him and not be annoyed...and it least it's a comedy. When I saw the first hobbit movie in theaters, during the opening when Bilbo is talking about his relatives, a member of the audience could not stop laughing and it was extremely annoying. :O But your story is so much better! I love everyone had a good laugh! :D You'll always remember that, I'm sure. lol Also, it's cool the show aired when you were in college; I can imagine with how the movie is, the show is probably pretty out there at times and why it wouldn be popular with people. I'll be checking it out too. Thanks for sharing your stories. My favorite thing is to hear about other people's experiences with the movie. Love it! And thanks again for the info.

@@AngelGroves I also recall he made several very funny appearances on the David Letterman show. I think you can find those on RU-vid. He also appeared as a vampire in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie (I mean, the actor Paul Reubens, not in his "Pee-wee Herman" persona). And if you continue to delve into Pee-Wee Herman's history...well, he's also known for being arrested for...well, I'll let you discover that on your own...

So, I actually did remember the arrest...it's one of the few things I knew before going into the movie. Just the fact it was a theater and what he was doing...but I'm glad i watched this movie! lol Really great. And nice, I need to check out his Letterman appearances as well for sure. Thank you! That's so cool; I just read someone else's comment who was saying he was in Buffy...I have seen that movie A LOT and cannot believe I didn't recognize him.. or just forgot bc it has been a while. I was a little kid when Pee-Wee was a big deal. His show "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" was addictive. Goofy a bit of a rebel and generally written for kids in a fun way. It was a great show for it's time and i loved the movie when it came out.

The term you're looking for at the beginning of the reaction is "Rube Goldberg Machine." And the actor playing P.W. Herman in the drive-in movie is James Brolin. He was a big star in the 70s and 80s. He is also the father of actor Josh Brolin, who played the older brother in The Goonies and who also played Thanos in the Marvel movies.

People were telling me he was his father, and I was thinking yes, that's definitely why he looks familiar, but I've 100% seen the original Amityville Horror multiple times and so that totally makes sense why he REALLY looked familiar. I also think I've seen him in something in later years. Thanks for the info!

I grew up watching this movie. And I always wanted to visit the Alamo and the dinosaur truck stop as a result of it. Years later I finally got to see the dinosaurs (in the Marine Corps of all places) when I was stationed in Camp Pendleton. The truck stop (in Cabazon) was along the route we traveled during our Humvee training. I also got to see the Alamo when my sister graduated from Air Force basic training.

Saw this in the theater at the age of 12 when it came out. Paul Reubens developed the character of Pee Wee while in the LA based comedy troupe The Groundlings. He would perform as the character onstage at comedy clubs and had some bit parts in movies. He had an HBO special in 1981 The Pee Wee Herman Show (which had a bit more of an adult flavor). Then the movie in '85, and the tv show Pee Wee's Playhouse ran from 1986-1990.

@@AngelGroves This is kind of a long clip (12 min) but you can see how good Paul was at stand-up while in character. This was from 1980. Early on he's getting laughs, but the audience isn't really sure what to make of him. At about 2:00 minutes he "shushes" the crowd..and he owns them at that point. Then at about 5:00 a lady who's laughing loud is distracting the audience- he makes her part of the act and regains control. This movie was my everything when I was 7 years old. I could laugh and talk like Pee Wee, I quoted the movie constantly, I could do all of the bike stunts, I was Pee Wee for Halloween, and I could do the entire Tequila dance. My favorite character other than Pee Wee was Francis. My sister and I would recreate their argument in front of the house. We took the "I know you are, but what am I" sequence to new heights of annoying. Good memories ...

I have many movies that were the same for me, and this one is really creative and fun so I see why it was so great for you. You were him for Halloween? I’ve loved this film since I first saw it. There’s two sequels Big Top Pee Wee & Pee Wee Herman’s Big Holiday, which are worth checking out.

The dinosaur park scene at a Major Impact on me as a kid. It stuck so well in my mind that I for a Time believed that I had gone to that Park with my family on vacation and was always upset that I can never find the pictures we took. Of course we never went there so was all just a weird Mandela effect dream after watching this movie

I LOVE this comment! I used to do things like that as well, as a kid, from certain movies I watched so much. That is neat you did it with the dinosaur park scene. I can see why. I think those dinosaurs are one of the coolest "real" parts of the movie...they're giant AND you can go inside them and see out the mouth? If I had seen that as as kid, it would have stuck in my brain a lot as well. Thanks for sharing this. :)

I love that you do a lot of movies other youtubers don't, thank you especially for They Live! I highly recommend Dark City from 1998. Streets of Fire (1984) also is very stylish with a great cast including Elizabeth (E.G.) Daily who played Dottie in this movie.

This was Tim Burton's first directorial work, watching this, you see why his later movies like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, etc. seemed so familiar. All the Tim Burton tropes are front and center here.
