They're Made Out Of Meat
This is the short film I made in 2004. I shot it as my final film project at #NYFA. It stars Tom Noonan, Ben Bailey and Gbenga Akinnagbe. I must make another one day. Based on the short story by Terry Bisson.

@@JennyEverywheretheyre aliens pretending. Neither cigarette ever glows or gets any shorter. There are fake cigarettes that still burn and make smoke that are pretty standard in the industry so non smokers still can pull off the effect. With that level of engagement and how often the cigarettes are featured it seems absolutely intentional they arent actually burning, but rather something aliens would like to engage with

That doesn't make sense. Actors don't have to do things in their real life in order to do them correctly on screen. That's why they act. Do you believe Anthony Hopkins was able to be believable as Hannibal Lecter because he kills and eats people in real life?

I wondered why he has to explain the flapping meat sounds to the other alien when their entire conversation has taken place via flapping meat sounds. I've come back to it a few times and have been mystified every time! while I don't want to pop the bubble this short film puts me in, I would love to hear other people's thoughts, especially from someone who put it together! It is one of those stories that tickles me in all the right ways. It's like Dynamo Dream where I must know more, but I'm terrified that knowing more will kill the vibe haha! I don't have specific questions, but I would be interested in knowing what other media along these lines you like and would recommend! Thanks for this amazing short film!

When I read Bisson's short story a dozen years ago, it stuck with me. He had it just right. I didn't think anyone could ever really get it right it in a short film, but you nailed it. Noonan and Bailey were perfect, the diner, the clothing, everything. A few years ago, just after I first saw your film, I played it for my class. I teach high school physics, and had a really good rapport with one class. We had some time to kill, and I like the kids, and wanted to share this cool, strange video. Their reaction was great. They liked it, but weren't really sure what to make of it. Like they weren't certain they got the joke, so they went back and watched it a few more times. Getting a high school kid to think isn't always easy, so good work.

Two aliens are discussing the recent discovery of a planet inhabited by carbon-based lifeforms. One of the aliens is incredulous when the other tells him that these lifeforms are "made up entirely of milk." "Milk?" the first alien asks. "You mean, like, liquid food?" "Yes," the second alien says. "They're made out of milk, and they've been trying to get in touch with us for almost a hundred of their years." "Omigod," the first alien says. "So what does this milk have in mind?" "First it wants to talk to us," the second alien says. "Then I imagine it wants to explore the Universe, contact other sentiences, swap ideas and information. The usual." "We're supposed to talk to milk?" the first alien asks. "That's the idea," the second alien says. "That's the message they're sending out by radio. 'Hello. Anyone out there. Anybody home.' That sort of thing." "They actually do talk, then," the first alien says. "They use words, ideas, concepts?" "Oh, yes," the second alien says. "They're just as intelligent as we are, and they're even more creative. They've invented all sorts of amazing things, like cheese and ice cream." The first alien is silent for a moment, trying to process this information. "This is...a lot to take in," he says finally. "I know," the second alien says. "But it's also very exciting. Imagine what we could learn from them! They could teach us so much about the Universe, and about ourselves." The first alien nods. "You're right," he says. "We should definitely try to make contact with them." The aliens eventually make contact with the milk creatures, and they are amazed by what they learn. The milk creatures are indeed very intelligent and creative, and they have a deep understanding of the Universe. They teach the aliens about the nature of reality, the meaning of life, and the importance of compassion...
@9one9Music
@9one9Music Год назад
This version of the story explores the same themes of paranoia and the danger of making assumptions as the original story. However, it also adds a new layer of meaning by focusing on the concept of milk. Milk is a substance that is both nourishing and sustaining, and it is also a symbol of motherhood and care. In this story, the milk creatures represent the potential for good that exists in all of us. They are a reminder that we are all connected, and that we have the power to make the world a better place...

To this day this remains one of my favorite short films, you did a really good job working within the constraints and using common props and costuming and simple cinematography to make everything completely surreal. Big props to the actors too, they did an amazing job with their lines. This is the kind of stuff big film needs to pay more attention to, the craft gets so lost in special effects these days that you just don't see stuff this authentic anymore, especially not outside of arthouse oscarbait films.

Love this adaptation of Bisson's wonderful short story--out of all the films and radio plays I've seen, I think yours is the best. I show this to my Science Fiction class each year and pair it up with Quammen's "Face of a Spider" to get the students talking about what it means to see the world from the perspective of creatures that are so different from ourselves. Just wanted to let you know how much my students and I enjoy your work!

As to the lack of alien contact or radio signals: One - the inclusion of mitochondria in cells by endosymbiosis - either having a prokaryotic bacteria consumed by a another, or the other possibility of phagocytosis of a proto-eukaryotic cell - has the possibility of really being a rare event. As one astrophysicist mentions, a biological bottleneck. For instance, life probably exists in other worlds - but mainly as a "prokaryotic slime" So maybe the bottleneck is not so bad... But for two - even if it is more frequently possible than one can imagine, the chances of a species to not self-destruct might be even more unlikely. The "L" factor in the Drake Equation. May answer the Fermi Paradox... So the chances of the existence of an "intelligent" civilization (ever noticed that all the radio telescopes looking for it are pointed AWAY from the Earth?) ever overlapping to the point that either of them will be able to detect some sort of RF or other form of transmission (something like neutrinos would be good since they'd have less attenuation thru interstellar/galactic gas/particles/objects) is HIGHLY UNLIKELY due to: - the vast distances involved - each using a different form of technology for communication - AND THE BIG ONE: - they SELF DESTRUCT when they get advanced enough to do so, limiting the time they exist (that "L" factor in the Drake Equation). As the narrator in this vid mentions at about 12:49 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IxXaGzUnBRI.html , he goes on to state that the lack of contact with other intelligent civilizations is: "... because of the in-built and unavoidable stupidity of intelligent beings." "Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe." ~~ Frank Zappa (1940-1993) And at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IxXaGzUnBRI.html he mentions: "If this is the reason for the great silence, then I suppose we might take comfort in the fact that we are not the only idiots to have existed in the Milky Way. " Nice way to look at it... I guess. Our higher power radio and television transmissions over the past 100 years have passed between 12,000 to 59,000 star systems, or which only about 4 or 5 have planets that may harbor life. And that's most likely, they only contain the aforementioned "prokaryotic slime". And furthermore - imagine if a sophisticated extraterrestrial species DOES come across our transmissions, the first would be things like Howdy Doody, and Ralph Cramden telling his wife, "To the moon, Alice!!" Lovely... "Y'know, I've noticed an infestation here. Everywhere I look, in fact. Nothing but undeveloped, unevolved, barely conscious pond scum, totally convinced of their own superiority as they scurry about short, pointless lives. " ~~Edgar the Bug in Men in Black (1997)

Well I was about 21 when I made it. We shot the full dialogue... but I felt it didn't play as well on screen as it read on paper... so some very tough choices had to be made. I think all the original dialogue cut to about 14 mins.
