We’re Sorry. What Now?
The online apology has become a meme in its own right. But what compels people to spill their embarrassed guts on RU-vid? What do apologies do for them, and for us, their audience? And is there a philosophy of apologies that explains it all? Let’s find out in this video on Public Apologies: Who Cares?

Yayyy I have a friend and thus I'm not a loser. Calls them stuoid behind their back, and takes their money, and all this so they can fit in and feel a sense of belonging with the other viewers and commenters because they're DESPERATE for attention and friends, ANY friends regardless of quality. Jenna Marbles is the only person that I have actually taken seriously with an apology. She could have kept making LOADS of money over on Twitch and RU-vid and ignored it all, but she apologized, acknowledged why she still felt the need to apologize and not only said she would leave online, but actually did it. @SilverLetomi
@SilverLetomi Год назад
@Odelle I can't speak for Jenna Marbles but in Lindsay Ellis's case her departure from Twitter she stated was because Twitter was not good for her mental health ultimately and her departure from RU-vid she implied wasn't permanent but also she's a writer now and she loves writing more than RU-vid so her absence makes sense. You're very right, though. The goal isn't that people leave, it's that they show understanding and grow and change. I think these creators leaving platforms rings as actual remorse is that it IS a change. It's not an apology video followed by business as usual. Maybe not what we envisioned as the goal, but it fits our criteria, doesn't it?
@DepressedAI
@DepressedAI Год назад
@@Othillde I agree, but in the case of Jenna Marbles the stuff she did was early in her YT career and she apologized then as well. You can very much see that throughout her career after that she grew and was trying to be a good person all the time. When people started bringing the old videos back up she even said she wasn't mad at those people because that was things she did and she still takes responsibility for it. I think mentally she just didn't have it in her to be the online persona anymore. Which I think is fair.

I'm a first-year writing instructor, and apologies are the example I use to demonstrate rhetorical analysis. It often feels strange discussing effectiveness and purpose within this genre because the apparent and inherent purpose of the genre (forgiveness) is so often instrumental. Can one compose a rhetorically-focused apology and maintain sincerity? We can certainly include aspects that might lead our audience to believe that we are being sincere, but that planning itself seems to preclude actual sincerity. Thanks for sharing this. It is very kairotic that we covered this in class today.

One of the interesting things about the sacrament of penance is how the format has evolved over the centuries. It started out with the penatent admitting to their sin and asking for forgiveness in front of the entire congregation, moved into a format where the penatent was "anonymously" confessing, and has now turned into a friendly face-to-face encounter that resembles something more like a therapy session.

@ThatGuyMN

I agree 100%. Will 99 out of 100 people give half-hearted, opportunistic, hollow non-apologies when they do wrong? Maybe. But if theres that 1 person that genuinely uses introspection, takes accountability, and is sincere in making changes for the better... what more can we ask for? We don't have to give people a clean "do over" where they never have to own up to past mistakes; but we have to give people room to actually prove themselves. If we don't, it's just a death sentence. Once you've told someone they are "marked for life" no matter what they say or do, that's really dangerous thinking in my opinion.
@dontmisunderstand6041

What you said there contradicts itself. "Forgive, but don't forget" is a contradiction. There's no value in remembrance if you genuinely believe it's no longer a relevant factor to who they are as a person. And if you do believe it's still relevant, then you haven't forgiven them.

The whole problem with 'RU-vidr Apologies', at this point, is that they're just as insincere and algorithmically dictated as everything else that happens on RU-vid. Can we just stop demanding apologies from people for every grievance and offense? I’m so sick of this genre. It’s pointless. I get apologizing personally to individuals you feel you have wronged, but expecting that a publicized apology to a bunch of randos on the internet to be sincere is foolish. No wonder these apologies are so insincere; they’re pointless from the start. What are you actually expecting beyond some vague cliche of “taking accountability”? People in my personal life can apologize to me, and I will apologize to them. But screw the entire genre of performative remorse. The _purpose_ of the song was to undercut credible accusations by replying in a comical manner - implying that the accusations weren't something to be taken seriously. And she made sure the video was a good length for monetization _and_ used the fact that it was an "original song" to get RU-vid to shutdown a lot of videos that criticized her. Basically she just wants attention - and money - and will endeavor to profit off of _hate_ just as much as she would profit off a fan's adoration.

Apologizing can be quite an odd endeavor sometimes. I've both apologized and been on the receiving end of an apology and during both, have had multiple opposing feelings about the matter. For example, me Apologizing to someone for being the cause of them feeling bad about something one day and then not wanting to apologize the next day because I felt that it wasn't in fact me who responsible for the hurt but their own insecurities. And similarly, being apologized to by someone who felt responsible for hurting me one day but then the next, I'm telling someone who's apologizing to me that they need not because they weren't wrong for what they did, I simply overreacted to the situation based on my own insecurities. Essentially it feels like in certain situations, both can be true and it can be tough for both parties to come to said understanding because humans tend not to want to admit responsibility when said responsibility is masked in the eyes of others as "wrongdoing", making the "offender" less worthy of socializing with. Less socializing means being more alone and humans don't generally want to be alone, at least not long term and who knows how long the social criticism and shunning will last. Very interesting, confusing, beautiful and yet inconsistent human emotions can be.

There's an argument used against Reparations that goes "Well those people are long dead" - but that is rarely the case with those hurt by influencer actions or words - Take the recent case in Italy where "Tourists" carved graffiti on the walls of the Colosseum - and filmed themselves doing so. Simply saying "Oh we won't do it again" is not enough - there needs to be some form of Reparation made (and I DON'T mean offered)...

In terms of countries handling apologies right, Germany after WWII was really the gold standard. Putting Nazis on trial, paying reparations to the families of victims and countries that they invaded, and de-nazifying their government was really a step in the right direction. Granted many of these actions were forced on them by the allies, but the fact Germany to this day makes public Holocaust denial illegal is a good sign.
@primzahler8377
@primzahler8377 Год назад
Yes and no. I would agree that Germany did better than many other countries. There are also things that could have been done better. While there were trials against former Nazis many were also excluded and some given roles in the Gov. It also took to deal with both nationally for Germany and in terms of accountability of Nazis, the 60s in particular were influential. Besides Jewish people many other groups were also persecuted and it took the German Gov time to officially apoligize to these communities. For the Roma for instance until the 80s. I think while one can learn a lot from Germany it's important to also be aware of shortcomings and difficulties around these questions. Thinking Germany did everything right also ignores part of the underlying issues that plague other countries

These apology videos are really great for one thing. It shows who someone really is. Like 'Linus tech tips' Linus recent apology/fixes video. He doesn't actually take real responsibility for his mistakes. He only talks about in which great and awesome ways the company is changing and deflecting his responsibilities. I could go into more details, but you can watch the videos yourself. The fact that he asks if someone watches bestiality in job interviews and that he tries to spin a really big faux pas that could costs a startup their whole company says enough. It shows that he's just a narcissistic man child with a big ego. I often wonder how his employees and the people close to him feel. I wonder if they blame themselves for their difficult interactions. Because a man like Linus will probably be very manipulative and will most probably use blame shifting to keep himself from taking blame for anything.

P.s. He didn't even acknowledge any of the (sexual) abuse alligations from Madison and alligations from other employees. People who have been through some stuff or just naturally attuned to this sort of thing, have been able to see that the guy has been disingenuous and having a big ego for a very long time now. I loved his content and kind of liked his online persona for a long time, but I've been unsubbed for about two years now. I was wondering how long it would take for his skeletons to leave the closet. I'm glad more people are aware now. I wish we lived in a world where we weren't ruled by these kind of people, and that most people would be able to pick up on the charades of these characters.

I'm going to ignore a large part of what you said, because it will derail the whole discussion. Linus responded very poorly, at first. There's no denying that. He needed to shut up. In the context of "apology videos," he didn't actually release a bad one. He kept on social media saying stupid shit for a day while it blew up in his face, then a day later, the rest of the company made him stfu and they released a proper response. The first video was "yeah we fucked up. We're taking a week off from our normal shit to organize exactly what we think the problems are and what to do." People want an apology, but they don't actually care about it. Saying you're sorry means nothing if you keep doing the same shit. That's why LMG's response was the right one. They said sorry and then immediately slammed the brakes so they could fix things. The second response after their almost 2 week break was good. Linus didn't just say sorry, because most of the allegations are not valid. "Gawr you messed up once," is pointless to say if the problem is already being resolved. As Linus said in the follow-up, this wasn't a knee-jerk reaction to community outrage, as most of the things people were upset about were being worked on actively at all times. The things that weren't being worked on were the things he wanted to be clear about. The biggest issue was scheduling and communication from a company that grew too quickly, so he said, "ok, we'll put in place processes to avoid those issues in the future and alot more time to things that matter." If all you wanted was for a millionaire and everyone he employs to have his and their families' lives utterly destroyed forever, then you are worse than him, and you can enjoy being poor, salty, and alone, at least compared to Linus, because obviously that wasn't going to happen.
@da3dsoul
@da3dsoul Год назад
@@DeltaNovum Of course he didn't address the Madison issue directly. That would actually be illegal and wrong. That is something he sidestepped by saying that they are improving their already existing HR and mental health coverage. This episode was particularly excellent. Your videos are always really good, but this one stood out for me. Thank you for acknowledging the act that the United States has absolutely no intention of making any reparations for what we did to the First Nations. On the the tradition and institution of the confessional in Roman Catholicism, from the beginning confession was a method of transforming an individual. Much like AA today, the person was supposed to confront their errors, examine where and how they developed, and transform themselves by making amends to those who have been hurt and to recognize the signs of that bad road so it isn't trodden again. After St. Jerome codified much of Church teaching on a Roman model, the heart of Apostolic tradition was buried under the bureaucratic rubble of an empire. The Church became formulaic and out of touch with their founding teachings, to an extent. As the Church's reach and responsibilities grew the medieval minds in charge continued with the Roman model and used public punishment as a means of crowd control. The Church should have used the old formula the moment the first sex abuse case came to light. That they did not, and are still not fully embracing the truth (to be fair, neither do the Boy Scouts, the US military, or any other religion) show how far from the teaching of Good News the need to be "practical" have driven the Curch. The Reformation just made things worse because Luther's, and especially Calvin's, obsession with piety and personal responsibility. The Calvinist idea of an "elect" that is predestined to be better than everyone else gave Protestant church leaders and politicians the levers they wanted for crowd control on an institutional level. Many of the problems in American society stem from errors made in the Reformation. Today's confessional videos are the product of Protestant theology that holds that salvation to Heaven depends upon a confession of faith and absolutely nothing more. Works are meaningless. The minister, Jimmy Swaggert, is a great example, as are many politicians. For them, the mere act of appearing to be really really sorry is enough. Works are meaningless, remember? Why should actual, material reparations be made?

Apologies are basically meaningless to me. If you've done something you feel bad about, then go out into the world and make up for it with actions that honestly do something to repair that you've done. Saying you're "sorry" is the easiest thing to do because it's just words and no one says you even have to mean it. And when social media personalities do it they're only worried about their cash flow via their subscriber base. I'm very sparring with my forgiveness because if it's given without the person making up for what they did then it's basically endorsing their actions. You don't deserve to ask for or recieve forgiveness until you can actually fix what you did wrong and if you can't fix it then you don't deserve to be forgiven because why should you get to be forgiven if your victims still have to suffer because of your actions? This is why killers and perpetrators of sexual crimes never deserve forgiveness because their victims will never fully recover. If you forgive people too easily or quickly then you're giving them a free pass on what they did wrong.
