“Why would you ever want to have a separate device just for MP3 players” Simple, doesn’t get interrupted when somebody calls you. You don’t have images or anything that also take up space. It’s got a headphone jack, and it can have a good amp in it that will pump clearer audio out.

@@TexasGreed The main reason you still use jack for cheap mp3 players is because the Bluetooth tech on them costs more and usually suck. So you get a 30$ mp3 player and $10 headphones that last 6-12 months while the mp3 player lasts 5-10 years.

@@Lobos222 There is a better reason. Let's say I want audio quality comparable to 100$ good headphones, let's say AKG K240. How much would I need to spend to have a wireless version of that? 300$? More? At the time I was buying my headphones, I think there was no way to get that audio quality without cable. And these are only cheap monitor headphones.

While it doesn't apply nowadays, you must take into account that some workers do their work in sensitive spaces where phones are NOT allowed, but regulations on music playback aren't as stringent, hence carrying an MP3 player is appropriate.

Phones can’t play high resolution files correctly even iPods suck! You need a DAP with nice chips and amplifier. Dual dacs and amps if when things become sublime. It’s the same as a gaming laptop except for music. Plus most amazing headphones will not work or sound decent with a phone.. for as much as we pay for apple devices. There is no reason they can’t put a decent dac and amp section in them.

A good reason why MP3 players still exist is privacy. My brother in law works in a location where privacy is a very important thing, so they bar any devices with cameras on them. An MP3 player allows him to still listen to things while at work.

And hardware buttons.. Not touch screen, actual buttons to press and control while a player is in your pockets etc.... And I want Audible support again.. Only SanDisk still makes Audible players and they are only tiny players with short run times.. I would by a new Walkman or Cowon player that supported Bookmarks, AAC and Audible.. Would also like Opus and Wavpak format.. I loved my Cowon that used to play Audible file for 60 hours but I wished it played AAC files(it did it as Audible files are AAC but the didn't pay for the licences to be able to support it for music)

I use an MP3 player at work (FiiO X3 Mk II). If I use my phone for music, my boss walks by, and I'm staring at my phone; there's no way for him to know from his perspective if I'm just switching songs or I was watching RU-vid for the last hour. All he knows is I was on my phone and it's not a good look.

The purpose is to have a device that plays music better than phones. A lot of us also love tactile controls, and realize that when using a phone we make a lot of compromises with the user interface, and various features that provide convenience. For me? It was mostly sound quality, but I realized I do like having a dedicated device. Battery life, a focused purpose, tactile controls, many options to adjust the sound and playback.

Quick real world example: I used to work in an office doing data entry for a health insurance company. We weren't allowed phones, BUT we were allowed to listen to music(since it was data entry and we didn't receive calls) so they encouraged the use of mp3 players

I've actually recently fallen in love with FiiO's audio products. I got some Sony wireless headphones at christmas and FiiO is literally the only company that makes a transmitter capable of transmitting the Sony LDAC codec. I paired the FiiO transmitter with their K3 USB-C DAC and it makes a really clean compact setup that allows me to stream high fidelity lossless BT audio to my headset all over my house!

When I was in college I actually needed a separate MP3 player. I have learning disabilities and have to take test a special way. The main rule is I can't bring into the testing room anything that can "Talk to the outside world" in other word anything I can look things up with. Simple MP3 players don't do that and are allowed in. i use the MP3 player to drown out distractions in the room. So there are people that still need them.

I think they should continue to make MP3 players. It’s always good to have a backup device for if something happens to your phone! My iPhone XS now has a bad battery and I won’t be able to afford an iPhone 13 until January, but at least my PSP plays MP3s, and if I convert my music to the AAC format, I can listen to it on my 3DS! Also, not everyone can afford a smartphone!

@@buffkangaroodog A bit late, but don't trust IP ratings too much. The test done for waterproofing is done with fresh water, not with saltwater or chlorine from a swimming pool. Your phone might resist water, but either the chemicals from the chlorine or the saltwater might corrode the charging port or worse, the inside of your phone. Just a bit of advice.

I will just say that it is good that MP3 players are still being made, in general. When I was in Treatment cell phones were not allowed but unconnected MP3 players were. So it's nice that this is still an option.

Yep. Would like to try one of those DAPs. So far the best sounding mp3 player for me was and is still the samsung yp-r0 series. Generous audio quality options to "updgrade" the sound of your mp3 and other type files. Bought it in 2011 and still working today. Just for kicks remember Iriver? Those things lasted forever. They had a website where you could download free music back in those days.

I actually have a FiiO X3-II. Great capacity with the micro sd, tons of options to fine tune your experience, and it plays pretty much anything under the sun. Plus the audio quality is outstanding. I've heard stuff in songs I've listened to for years that I never noticed before. But they're right about the earbuds. Never go with stock earbuds when getting an mp3 player. They're always there just because.

I love using my Walkman as I don't like pulling my phone out in the open much, especially just to listen to music as then I am distracted and one can snatch the phone with ease. Besides how easy to carry it is, I love that it has a built-in USB as it makes charging and sending files a lot more convenient as someone who's constantly on the computer. I only wish it had more than 4GB storage space...

I'm still listening to my music database on a MP3 player because I hate being on my phone. I grew up appreciating tape players ability to be record music from the radio and jam my mix tapes for a few weeks until the next greatest hit made its way to my ears. I owned my first MP3 player in 9th grade that used compact flash cards and didn't have a screen but I didn't care, I had my music with me and that's all that mattered.

Even Fiio had a 1.2k USD player, the M15, and the M11 Pro is like 500-600 bux, didn;t remember. Didn't hear him shittalking about those. The funny part is that other than stating the outputs and the fact that it's a fully android DAP, he didn't review a single other part of the M11. As someone who has tested it, I'd say that if you like bright, flat sound almost like the CA Andromeda's, you'll love the M11. It's better than the X7ii from Fiio as well. Also Riley, it's 4.4mm, not 4.5mm.

I had one of those super budget MP3 players in high school - mine was also made by AGPTEK, didn’t look like yours and had multiple ports rather than charging through the headphone jack, and the headphones it included apparently had an antenna in them for using the device's radio function (which I never tested), it came in the exact same box the one you bought came in.

Yeah my thoughts are if you're going to buy a separate mp3 player nowadays you're either doing something unique like swimming with it, or you're springing for an audiophile model like the venerable Sony nw-zx300 which is my daily driver. It's chonky but I carry it with a portable tube amp (Oriolus BA300s) and it's amazing for commuting by train.

i like mp3 players bc a) i was introduced to music thru them as a kid, so nostalgia factor, and b) i like having a sort of specialized device just for that. i don't have to worry about setting aside storage space for music or the battery running out fast, and it just makes the experience a little more special to me. i also have an old car and for some reason a lot of modern phones don't really work with the aux, but an mp3 player does

Just avoid doing anything sensitive with it since Android 7 is old enough now that it's not exactly getting the latest security updates (granted many Android phones have that problem since Phone Service Providers tend to only update the newest devices and are often a month or 2 behind. That's the only real gripe I have with Android and it's in part a result of the freedom manufactures and phone companies and users have with it.

One of my coworkers that runs uses an ipod for exactly the reason you said, phone is bigger than they want strapped to them while running. Also at one of my wife's previous jobs in a factory, they allowed you ot listen to music while working but only with an mp3 player because people play with their phones and reply to texts, and take phone calls, etc. So phones stay locked in employee locker when on the floor, mp3 player for music while you work with no disruptions.

I still use a gen 2 shuffle at school even though have my phone and a MacBook air. sometimes its nice to just plug something in (with a headphone jack!) and hit play and not worry about which playlist I want, if the teacher sees me on my phone, etc etc.

Heres another perspective, I play music throughout my 10 hour shifts at work. My phone simply does not have the battery capacity to handle 10 hours of Bluetooth music play along with simultaneously using other apps. With an mp3 player, I will take that load off my phone.

That Sony Walkman thing is pretty good when you go for swimming / sports. That FiiO M11 is for those who already own audiophile headphones that are bit harder to drive by cheaper mp3 player, so it's a portable headphone DAC/AMP that's capable of playing hi-res format (DSD, Flac, etc)

they failed to mention that the android used in the m11 (and most other DAPs) is pretty heavily modified, and they used the older android version for stability as well as the time it took to engineer things like DSA.
