This is an interesting (and entertaining) sparring match that caught my eye, between a big dude with a pole flail and a Kendo practitioner with a shinai. I don't know anything about the fighters, as there is currently no info in the description, but they look competent to me.
I was expecting the fighter with the sword to pretty much get steamrolled by the polearm with its superior reach and power, but he did surprisingly well. Definitely an awesome match, and a good opportunity to point out some pros and cons of the flail in practical terms.

I've fought many sparring matches against a war flail just like that, having a sword and shield set up myself, it's a nightmare. Honestly I'd rather have a bastard or anything two handed then a shield and sword against that thing. Mind you in our set up the war flail guy had a small strap shield on his left hand as well. The flail always comes over the shield as soon as you try to move in close, and if you keep enough distance to parry the flail, any parry just resets him for the next shot... Horrible, I think I got in like 1-2 hits in throught the entire match, while my buddy with the flail got in like 40 hits -_- (he's good at it too)

8:49 The flail guy pulls a strike here; his off hand is a couple hands from the end of the pole, then on the actual strike he lets that hand slip down to the very end. Gets him that little extra reach to make sure he can connect. Always a good move.

One of the big advantages for the flail in my mind is how God damn distracting it is. Your eye automatically responds to movement leaving you vulnerable to a thrust or a quick change in the direction of the strike. It's like trying to follow three different attack vectors at once.

You can tell that guy knows how to use a great flail, halberd, guardsman' axe just by the thumbnail picture. He hits you with the pokey bottom of the staff first to destabilize you or parry then WHACKS you with the business. Balance is the number 1 important factor in a fight unless you are both on the ground. Once the sword guy learned the distances he would be able to rush in on a blind flail miss. You can actually use this like a pool queue or spear and smack them with the handle in a a pretty surprising move once you perfect it, but it halves your distance of a great swing. Its like a quick surprising ram's butt with the bottom then you kill shot them with the flail.

The flail is called "Pyeon-gon" - uneven/lobsided staff-flail in Korea. It was mainly a cavalrymen's weapon against invading Japanese in the 16th century. It was easy for the conscripts to learn quickly and be effective in a short time, as Korea was not very well prepared for war at the time. Speaking of the Japanese, I find this samurai battle reenactment interesting because combatants very quickly go into actual grappling and struggle with side arms(daggers) on the ground. My guess is that in the old days, in real battles, people did not stand upright the whole time executing clean moves. Again, my guess is, it would have been "ugly" - bodies piled over, muddy, entangled, kicking and punching. In a melee you'd be fighting as a member of a team, unless you undisciplined and going to lose anyway. Presumably flail guy would strike at a distance and flankers would protect him and move in for kills. Every opponent down means you can concentrate more teams on the survivors. Presumably this was all practiced in war training. Kind of like stripping away an enemy's command, infantry and missle defenses from their armored vehicles so you can kill them. After that they become very vunerable.

5:45 excellent question and analysis! In kendo it's taught to continue rushing for two reasons: 1. It teaches a mentality of "finishing" the hit by committing to the forward motion: In bouts it has the practical advantage of selling the hit to the judges and demonstrating your spirit, but also causes your hits to be more confident/powerful. I'm sure many disciplines teach how focusing on the follow-through ends up with an all-round better strike. 2.Exactly like you said, It teaches you to get in the best position for a follow up strike: your opponent is either off-balance and backpedalling (so you have advantage) or, stands their ground, where there's a whole school of techniques about taking advantage of your momentum crashing into their body.

Despite flail guy being all left feet sword guy would not have been able to get as many hits in if they were using weapons more analogous to the real thing. With the flail being so light it has ALL of its power stolen. It doesn't matter for swords as much because they don't get they power from their mass and tend to be more evenly distributed on weight anyway. With a sword, all they have to do is touch you to do MAJOR damage. A flail on the other hand is ALL about that mass, about that mass (😝) and would be able to USE that mass to blow through most of sword guys guards and be able to disarm him far more regularly.

I disagreed with one flail strike where the fella let go with one hand, and let the shorter end just continue to hit the swordsman's side. I'd have to be struck myself before I'd believe the level of torque would do a significantly less amount of damage, especially with an outer layer of iron and a thick padded undercoat!

@@marcogenovesi8570 Because that's what years of training does to a person sometimes. Kendo is not swordsmanship but a sport with rules. If you've only been training in a sport, it won't make you a good swordsman by definition. And I do think I can see that he starts out the sparring adhering more to Kendo regulations. But the more the sparring goes on, he starts to deviate and improvise since adhering to Kendo regulations clearly doesn't work. 😁

It changes from school to school and if your Kendo is sportive or not, but back in the day i used to pratice Katas from several schools, the 3 (or 4) from the japanese army on WW2 and even Yakuza ones. The school i praticed had a very clear "in combat anything goes" policy and some bonkers moves would show up now and then. The person on the movie has great leg positioning and a very good posture.

@white-noisemaker9554 2 года назад
That's not entirely true. The one-hand thrust is an actual technique taught in kendo. It's usually performed with the off-hand for greater reach. It is however considered a surprise or desperation attack, and not generally encouraged because of the high potential for loss of the weapon.

Flails, as any other blunt weapons, are also extremely deadly for armored opponets, unlike swords. In real real combat, swordsmen used an extra weapon for killing, here in italy it was called "misericordia" wich was like a very thin dagger/stiletto usually wore as a neckchain in the stile of a holy cross, hence the iconic name, to stab an opponent, during clashes, in the neck or the holes of the helm or armpit area etc where armor coverage was not plate or to sneak thru chain or padding. Normally with a hammer or a mace, you would just bash anywhere and call it a day, any hit with decent force was almost incapacitating, expecially in the head/arms/legs.

Also, one of the reasons why the Hussites managed to last that long in rebellion against practically all of Continental Europe minus Poland and Lithuania even with subpar equipment is because of their heavy use of two-handed flails. Apart from wagenburg tactics and disproportionate use of man-portable firearms.
@broadbandislife
@broadbandislife 2 года назад
@@kuronoch.1441 Uh, yeah, I'm pretty sure that "apart" bit was overwhelmingly the more important factor. Even a half-assed wagon fortress was a very effective field fortification (see eg. the Battle of the Herrings during the Siege of Orléans) that for most practical intents and purposes entirely negated enemy cavalry, never mind now one done with purpose-designed vehicles, and the Hussites having the foresight of also kitting themselves out with plentiful light artillery which their opponents rarely could match meant they could just sit pretty and blast away until the enemy force either committed to attack or spared themselves further bombardement by leaving. Peasant troops and rebels just used two-handed flails a lot for the simple reason they already had the handling down from threshing grain in peacetime, and a simple addition of metal reinforcements to the striking bar (and preferably swapping the connector to metal links that couldn't be readily cut) to convert it into an effective weapon could be quickly done by any village blacksmith worth his apron.

@ascrassin
@ascrassin 2 года назад
Yea, look like he overextended a bit there (it's also not the only time it appends).
@SurmaSampo
@SurmaSampo 2 года назад
@@ascrassin It is common for the person with superior reach to be eager to attack so a good tactic for the swordsman is to create an intentional opening when in the extended reach of the polearmsman to draw a specific attack with the parry/evade in mind ready to be executed as soon as the attack is detected. Extended attacks with polearms are just like lunges with single handed swords. They allow for an out of measure attack with the risk of being left exposed and can often be performed safely. The swordsman needs to have read the polearmsman's speed, tells and the potential attack vectors before this can be executed with any measure of success. Once proficient in this technique I have found it to be the most reliable way to cross the danger zone of the opponent's long reach advantage. To say this requires practice is an understatement.
@SurmaSampo
@SurmaSampo 2 года назад
Believe it or not but this sort of parry can actually pull the momentum of the pole forward a little disrupting the polearmsman's balance. Once you see your polearm being taken offline in the attack you need to pull your the back hand rearward and downward to shorten the lever the mass of the head is using to pull you forward. Since the fulcrum is the lead hand you want to get your lever as long as you can as fast as you can to regain control. Fighting with a polearm is a continuous play of sliding scales between leverage and reach while trying to control your timing and position in the fight.

the running in in kendo is sort of for that reason, once you have done your strike if your enemy has range and strikes you, if your strike is judged ineffective they can score, so very quickly closing distance post strike robs your opponent of good form and range. Against a real sword if your first strike missed and you ran in you might impale yourself but in kendo tournaments a point the blade at the enemy and let them run onto it, isn't considered a scoring strike, so that quick close negates your opponents optimum strike range and chance to counter
@rajamicitrenti1374

One of the frustrating things about this part of Kendo/Kumdo is that not everyone agrees on how far you are supposed to go in order for your strike to count as having been properly committed to. I've had some instructors say to charge into them and stop, while others say you are supposed to charge through/past the left shoulder of your opponent far enough to be back at 1-step striking distance or a little farther when you turn toward them. With seeing the posibility of thrusting with the pole part of the flail, would it not make sense to attack a small spear head to it for exactly this purpose? Sure, It would make attaching the chain more difficult and the overall cost of the weapon would go way up, so probably not a "peasant weapon" anymore, but I could see it being used in duel and such as a bit of a obscure crowd pleaser weapon.
