The disallowed goal of Benzema had a greater effect than if it were an actual goal, it rattled the cage and alarmed defenders, even more, to tighten the screws around Benzema so he would have no chance of scoring again, by doing so they omitted to watch for Vinicius Jr. Liverpool tactics were based on weak Real Madrid defensive lines, which didn't happen and Real Madrid came out as a fortress, they had no plan B.

The pass had pace, which meant that Trent had to anticipate it. He was actually in a good position to stop it, but I really don't think he realized that Vini was on his back, and I think that is an area of improvement. Still, Real Madrid did really well in creating overlapping runs, there was potentially 3 passes to give at that point. A pass to Benzema which was equally threatening but is extremely difficult due to offside, and a fast pass to Carvajal but Van Dijk had that covered (also the follow-up play would be a pass into the box to Benz which has a good chance at being intercepted by Allison); and the last pass which was a gamble and it was beautifully distributed to Vini. So far Valverde looks to be a promising midfield generational talent. But in my opinion, the correct play was that Trent should've played it offside and paid closer attention to Konate. Konate, was closely watching Van Dijk who also tried to play offside.

For me the major culprit is Fabinho, then Henderson then Robertson, then TAA At 1:04 Liverpool is "gegenpressing" Modric I believe, 2 against 1, Robertson is covering the pass line to Valverde, Mane is closing in on Casemiro and there is a defensive square behind. Of those four, Fabinho has to close in on Carvajal, who is running between the lines to get Modric out of the gridlock. At that point Liverpool is 8 against 4 in the action zone. Fabinho is too far from Carvajal already. At 1:06 Modric is feinting to be pressed back and Mane leaves Casemiro to push up the gegenpressing, probably expecting Henderson and Fabinho to follow and close in on Carvajal and Casemiro. But they don't. At 1:07 Modric' pass to Carvajal takes out 3 Liverpool players, the two ones pressing (Thiago and Diaz I believe) and Mane. Now it's 6 against 4 in the action zone, counting in Benzema and TAA. This is not the fault of Thiago or Diaz but Fabinho's, who's not completing the pressure on Carvajal. At 1:10 Fabinho "bites" with Robertson still covering the pass line and Thiago giving negative pressure. Henderson is too far from Casemiro which allows Carvajal to make the better choice of passing to Casemiro, rather than playing into Valverde's space, because Van Dijck is there too. At 1:12 Casemiro now has a free pass line to Valverde. Look where Carvajal is: behind Thiago, Robertson and Fabinho. He outruns Thiago and Robertson (who doesn't really make an effort) with Fabinho admittedly recovering his position. Now it's 4-4 in the zone of the action, with Vinicius coming into the picture. At this point it's already very difficult for both Van Dijck and TAA. Van Dijck needs to deal with the overlapping Carvajal and Valverde, TAA is still backing Konaté for Benzema, while Vinicius is in his back. Fabinho is giving some negative pressure but that's of little value at this point. Probably TAA should have left Benzema to Konaté, counting on negative pressure by Fabinho and Henderson, and turn to Vinicius. But 8 seconds have passed since Modric was being pressured. That's quick thinking you need there to leave the position which is full part of the gegenpressing maneuver. Lat but not least, you must admire Modric and Carvajal to take out 2 men successively to go from a 4-8 to a 4-4, and Valverde to deliver a perfect pass, to Benzema to confuse the defence with a feint offside and Vinicius to stay onside and unmarked.

Thiago is the one to be blamed instead of Fabinho. He did a bad defense to Carvajal that’s why Robertson has to chase Modric that far. Then Thiago failed to cut the pass from Modric to Carvajal. Finally when Valvade got the ball, Carvajal started running to support, Thiago failed to follow him once again.

Very interesting analysis. It only makes me appreciate the goal that much more-really quite impressive from several Madrid players, as you say. It also seems to me that Fabinho checks his run back just long enough to allow Valverde to get the cross in, and that he maybe does this because he thinks that Van Dijk is going to deal with it, not realizing that Van Dijk is about to be dragged back by Carvajal. Also I *think* you mixed up Diaz and Robertson, from the body language.

Maybe Trent is the hottest talking point of the goal but what really hurts Liverpool is when Cavajal received the pass from Modric, he can turn and then bypass the trap formed by Thiago, Fabinho and Diaz to pass the ball to Casemiro. When the ball gets out, Casemiro passed to Valverde but he also can switch side to Vinicius. I think Cavajal play the ball out of the 3 man is the turning point. For a pressing well-known team like Liverpool, that is quite disappointed at that moment. They overload on the left to minimize space for Cavajal means there will be lots of space on the other side or behind the defense line when the ball gets out of that trap.

Fullbacks unfairly get all the blame because it is easy for them to get exposed because of their position. The ball was lost up the pitch which left Robertson high up the pitch and Vvd doing his best to mark the cross and cover the line overlap by Carvahal. Trent tucked in to help cover the center back. Sure he cld have been more aware of the hard run into the box by Vini but every thing was done perfectly by Real Madrid even from the midfield splitting pass from Modric. Share the blame with who lost the ball leaving his defenders in tough positions then just give RM credit for a good counter attack.

With this goal I have to admit that Carvajal overlapping made it much more difficult to step in on Fede, but in certain situations as a defender (especially a CB) you can’t allow attackers the time to think about how the want to attack. You need to take that time away and take matters in your own hands. Van Dijk is so good at dueling since he’s super strong and quick due to his long strides, that’s why it always frustrates me with him running back. His partner Konate for example had multiple situations where he used his body to step in on Vini to recover the ball

reason why I am always mad VVD name pops up anytime we are having a GOAT defender discussion. A defender that always run back. Most of times live his teammates to recover the ball for him. A guy even said he is a better defender than madini. I was glad I watch prime madini played this game. No way VVD should be consider a GOAT defender. Absolutely no way

It was accumulative, konate had a great game and covered trents flaws a number of times. He lost track of vini almost every time and eventually they got caught. Trent reminds me of kimmich at RB he's built for a back 5 or a move to DM because he is wide open in a back 4 but clearly has the qualities as the best attacking rb in the game

Real Madrid just needed to beat the press at the right time with the right passes, the disallowed goal panicked Liverpool, and gave Real Madrid the confidence that the only need to beat the press, score and defend well. Trent went to sleep, at the moment of the goal, and Henry was right, Vinius had been playing the whole game on his shoulder and he should have had the awareness to position himself to defend against him. Maybe, it was tireness or the lack of defending in that position, but as a wing back you should always be aware your winger is positioned. Credit to Real Madrid with those passes leading to the goal, you just felt like the needed to do once correctly and they will score, and you could see it coming...

He doesn't need to see Vinicious to know he is there. Trent mistake was to not stop on Konatè's movement since he saw even Benzema go offside. It's literally a one step mistake that happens all the time especially when you are exposed from a loss ball. Trent had an amazing performance as always, sometimes mistake just happen and there is nothing wrong about it. It is as important as missing a clear goal for a split second control that loses you balance, but somehow defenders and goalkeepers errors are always more analyzed.

I get that positioning and covering is a talking point for TAA, but I just think its a good goal that couldnt really have been defended any differently. Its a 3v3, and the only logical thing they can do at that point is man mark a player instead of have TAA cover the centre back. I would honestly blame Robertson more for creating stress on the defence over anyone else. If he isnt to blame then noone should be blamed and just consider the goal a good one.
@timothyhernandez6933

Trent’s positioning was bad, Vini was his man and he lost track of where his man was. As a defender you always need to know where your man is especially watching for through passes such as the one here by Valverde

@ItsInFeRNoXiiCxD 2 года назад
@@timothyhernandez6933 i mean yeah i agree to an extent and at this point since its a 3v3 they should man mark a player imo. But the goal itself was still good and as they said, it was also okay for TAA to cover for the centreback. I would still blame Robertson for putting on such a high press leading to the goal from open play and I wouldnt give TAA too much stick since he either marks or covers. Valverde took advantage of the tough scenario so its a good goal for me. Again, Id blame Rob more than anyone

Trent is always the easiest one to blame in such situations. But, that ball went past three other Liverpool players who could have stopped it. VVD, Fabinho, and Konate. Could VVD have moved towards Valverde to reduce his options? Could Fabinho have arrived a moment sooner? Anyway, they scored from that one chance and won. We couldn't score from the NINE shots that Courtois saved all night long. Congratulations Real Madrid.

For me if he anticipates well when the ball leaves Fede’s foot, he should step up to Konate’s line and it wouldve been offside. But that’s really risky and if he does so then he would be off balance in case the ball comes in and he has to deal with it. But the problem is he didnt deal with it anyway so might as well step up to the offside line if you’re not gonna put a foot in. That’s just an individual criticism because the play started way earlier than that and there were many moments where the ball couldve been intercepted. But from only the last pass and trent i think stepping up to the line wouldve been the best move but hindsight is 20/20 🤔

Although its a tough one, we can see that Arnold made 2 mistakes: 1. Stopping to hold the line for the offside trap when they are near the goal instead of focusing on covering any potential pass to vini. 2. Not knowing where vini is even though its his job is to keep an eye on him. Having said that , in my opnion the problem was more of a pressing issue, they didn't press the way they should and that left Verde with a lot of free space and many options that can lead to a goal.
@rrraynoorrr
@rrraynoorrr 2 года назад
I don't understand their arguments. Taa should have been covering vini. Benz should be second in his list of priorities at that moment. From the looks of it he momentarily forgot that vini is there and that is why he went to cover benz. If you're a right back you need to ensure the opposition lw doesn't have acres of space to finish from a cross, which is exactly what happened.
