To get 4wd-low to engage without rocking the vehicle; Turn knob to 4wd-hi(it will engage) then to 4wd-low, turn the ignition OFF , turn ignition ON. 4wd-low engage no rocking(also work with lockers ). After-market kit is available for the Taco to use the Locker anytime(it is a plug-n play). (If you dare you can also rewire the truck to get the locker anytime). 3nd gen Taco MT I get 23mpg(stock tires-70mph), changed to Goodyear Duratracs, now 17-18mpg. Also rerouted y-pipe to prevent bashing.

I dont think you need to get rid of it. Just be careful not to drop it hard on anything or get a skid plate to cover it.

Great insight as always. As a taller guy most rear view mirrors tend to be in my line of sight. I have found if you angle the pivot point closest to the window as far up as you can you will gain some more visibility below the mirror. It will take extra adjustments to get it right but its totally worth it.

Personal experience with working in a MFG company. When companies change things to make them better on an already existing make line (production of the Tacoma), it is often limiting in the companies growth. This is because efforts and attention gets shifted towards making what’s made better, rather than more of it. Extra investment must be made if companies are to change things on the spot, which is u likely.

🆕 Tacoma can't use locker unless you're in 4L just like 3rd gen... Ford ranger raptor can use locker anytime from what i understand! That's whack Toyota... And that exhaust pipe that hangs low like that is double-walled so even if it dents it will not obstruct the airflow unless you really smash it in
@Jason-Samko
@Jason-Samko 6 месяцев назад
Good to know on the cross over pipe.agree 100% stupid how toyota makes you go into 4 low to use the locker

Interesting video about the exhaust being so low. My 2011 Chevrolet Colorado (4WD Z85, not their Z71 off-road setup) has over 10-inches of ground-clearance (stock), AND the exhaust pipe is tucked up really high. I've been eying the 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road, but this video makes me want to rethink the idea!
@Jason-Samko

Your 2011 colorado has 7.7 inches of ground clearance. I had a 2012 personality. Great truck!
@OrcaBoat3
@OrcaBoat3 8 месяцев назад
@@Jason-Samko 7.7 inches was the ground clearance for 2WD Z85 models. 4WD versions of the Z85 have 10.4 inches of minimum ground clearance. The Z71 4WDs had 11.4 inches. Anyway... seems Tacoma TRD Offroad is rather low to the ground.

Seats where my #1 until I installed seat jackers. Paint that one is another one. Having the a/c water dump on the frame when they replaced so many rotted out frames and they still didn't fix the issue so I did. But like you say I love my truck also!!!

The seats on the 21 and new are power height adjustable. so that fixed that problem. but it took them 5 years to figure it out..lol Forgot about the a/c discharge on the frame!

@@Jason-Samko No it didn't I have a 22 offroad. I'm 5'11" with long legs and to sit right for long trips the Jackers where needed. Steering wheel needs to telescope out more then I'd be real happy.

@Jason-Samko Год назад
C Bayless my 22 trd offroad has 8 way power driver seat that really made it easy for me to find the right height. But I'm only 5'6". Agree the Telescoping wheel leaves much to be desired.
@cbayless4294
@cbayless4294 Год назад
@@Jason-Samko I have 8 way also. If the steering wheel would come out another 3-4" I would have been fine. Toyota I think did the best they could to fit the different sized buyers. Just little things that easy mods will fix and the best thing about Taco's they have a mod for everything. In your other vid about the 4th gen your right they did screw up. That's why I bought the 22 last year of the 3rd gen until covid screwed that up. I really wanted a 6' bed! Keep the Taco vids coming!!!

Keep it in 4 wheel high and drive it on the sandy muddy trails. The offroad functions you are talking about are for "offroading" and meant to be used in lower speeds on really rough terrain where higher speeds are not used.
@Jason-Samko
@Jason-Samko 10 месяцев назад
A locker is not necessarily a crawl speed tool. And every other manufacturer let's toy use it in 4 high. Including my rubicon gladiator. And it'd exhausting to cruise at 20 down a sand trail and then come to a mud golf and have to stop, put in 4 low, then roll and try to get locker to engage as you roll forward and backwards for 3 mins waiting for it to engage. Then drive thru mud. Then go thru all that crap to disengage and get back to 4 high only to repeat it 500 yards up the trail over and over again. Just absolutely stupid. I hated it. Really hated it.

It's probably because you have those heavier E-rated tires these trucks just suck on ⛽ mileage look at the OTT tune not only did I gain horsepower+18 torque+24 but I'm also getting better mpg... I went on a little 12 mile Cruise yesterday & I drove much sportier than what I usually do & still got 21mpg the tune is finally starting to break in I got it like 2 weeks ago, I've seen between 17-19 lately since tuned b4 that around 15mpg in my '22 manual off-road fyi... & check if your truck needs TSB update if you decide to tune it they will do any TSB updates if your truck as part of the tuning process

@honda116969 yep I drive alot for work and then spend a minimum of 4 days a week deep in the southern swamps. I don't go to off road parks or drive over obstacles on purpose. I don't do that kind of wheeling. But I'm always in 4 wheel drive, always fighting deep mud, water crossing, deep soft sand banks etc and always alone when doing it. The rubicon gives me a sense of confidence I did nit have with the tacoma. But sure did love the taco for 75% of what i do.

4 hi is for faster 4wd driving, when your in any situation that would require crawl control, i.e driving through rough terrain, your not going fast, so you dont need to be in 4 hi. to my understanding 4 low is for you r low speed off roading maneuvers. So it makes pefect sense to have it only activate in 4 low. Same for locking the rear differential, why on earth would you need to do that while driving? as opposed to just stopping and activating it when you need it.
@Jason-Samko
@Jason-Samko Год назад
So many situations where I want the locker and the mts modes in 4 high. And to have to stop and shift I to neutral, the engage 4 low, then shift to drive and puts along in 4 low, then stop on other side and go thru all that again to turn it all off and go back to 4 high is straight up exhausting. Trust me, I ha e to do it all the time. My truck lives in 4 wheel drive in the woods and swamps. I can list a hundred situations where the stuff I talk about is legit.
@Jason-Samko
@Jason-Samko 11 месяцев назад
@itsallminor6133 don't need speed and a locker. But going 25 mph theu a muddy trail and see a big hole every 300 yards it would be nice to just slow down to 15, hit the locker go thru the hole and turn locker off until the next one. Instead I have to stop before the hole, go neutral, 4low, engage locker , rock back and forth half a dozen times to get it to lock, then go theu the whole, then turn it all off then repeat further down at next hole. It's exhausting and stupid. And I don't want to drive 12 miles of trails in 4 low when I don't have to. Toyota failed failed failed at this. Both Ford and chevy let me engage the locker in 4 hi. And my friend with a ranger gets so tired of waiting for me to go theu all the crap I have to just to kick in a stupid locker.
