After some discussions on my Facebook cowboy boot group (which you can join here: / 2250038558605117 , I wanted to do a video covering what I've learned about resoling cowboy boots. When to do it, who to go to and what to ask for.
What's your experience getting cowboy boots resoled? Let me know in the comments.

Easiest and most efficient solution is to install good quality rubber half soles over the new leather soles and preserve them. It's way cheaper to replace the rubber ones in a while than messing with the destroyed leather soles. None of my boots are with the bare leather soles- all of them have Vibram half soles installed. Vibram x 3 more durable than any leather. It also gives you the superior grip.

Hey Jeremiah, This is one of your most helpful videos ad I’ve had two pairs of my favorite boot boots ruined by taking them to someone who did not know what they were doing. Even though they said said they were specialists in boots! Wrong! I could never wear them again. Do your homework as Jeremiah says, be really careful. Someplace are good, others not so good. Having to break in a boot again is very common when you have a full sole replaced, especially if they had to replace the cork that is underneath the sole which may have broken down and needed to be replaced. That cork molds itself to the shape of your foot as you wear the boot, that is what people are talking about when they mention breaking in a pair of boots so that it fits the same again. This happens with high end dress shoes as well, every time the cork is replaced underneath the sole. It isnt something that the cobbler did wrong that made the boots not fit the same, it is because they did the right thing and replaced the old cork that needed to be replaced.

Nice video, as usual. I have a comment about the song at the end, though. I bet you could make a really deep song using the homonyms soul and sole, how if you develop a hole in your soul (sole) you need to have it repaired. Could be a happy sappy love song or a down and dirty song about heartbreak. 🤷‍♂️😁

Jeremiah, We here are using our boots for riding and ranch work.I have both rubber and leather soled Boots such as Boulet,Ariat and Andersen Bean.Rubber soles will last much much longer than leather.The thing about Leather soles is if you walking on dry grass,they can be so slippery!!With out leather soles,what we do is as soon as we get them we put a hard rubber sole cover on.This keeps moisture away from the leather and saves the leather from wear.These rubber cover soles vary from 1.8 mm up to 3 mm and last along time. Yes as you mentioned some Boot firms do their own resoling such as Andersen Bean.

I’ve often put a glued-on rubber sole on my leather soled boots. I used to do this with new boots routinely, though I’m getting a bit lazy about that now. Some cobblers give you a funny look when you ask them to do that! It did extend the wear quite a lot. I have an old-fashioned ‘traditional’ cobbler, very experienced, near me who does a great job. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. This kind of skill is getting in short supply, at least in the UK, where I am. Great video, by the way!

I came across this video, thank you to any videos that give advice on taking cowboy boots to a cobbler and what to lookout for. I took an old vintage pair of cowboy boots in to a local cobbler (I have had no experiences with cobblers before) I noticed he had other boots he was working on and asked if he was experienced with cowboy boots, which he said yes. The boots I had seemed to have something going on with the fabric around the heel cup, it was just bothering me on the inside. I didn't know if it was fixable, worth fixing etc.. all in which I asked and he said he was experienced. Well long story short he took the heel cup out put some kind of cardboard inside, did a horrible stitch job, that part of the boot was like a whole different boot. When I nicely confronted him he claimed he had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't want to look over my boot with me, and claimed he did not remove any parts from my boot. It was an overall horrible and very unprofessional experience. He automatically gave me a refund without me having to ask and seemed angry I confronted him on his job. I didn't know what to do in such a horrible situation so I just left with my boots which I haven't done anything about since and got rid of them, thankfully they weren't a favorite pair. Now I know to never go back there again, ask around to an experienced cobbler in leather coy boy boots, and give a heads up to anyone with cowboy boots who is local so a similar situation doesn't happen to them. I hope this story helps someone else out👍🏻

Good people, I get heal plates put on my boots. This prevents the heel from ever running down. I walk alot in the city so I would destroy my heels in a matter of weeks without the heel plates. They last about a month. The toe plates last a year. The plates really help your heel to last a long time. City streets try to destroy our boots!
@JeremiahCraig
@JeremiahCraig 5 лет назад
Thanks so much for putting me on to this. My only concern would be a loss of traction. Is this an issue?
@saleemwaheed9956
@saleemwaheed9956 5 лет назад
Never had an issue with loss of traction. After a few steps the plastic plate gets roughed up just like a leather sole. If you drive everywhere or walk on dirt or grass, you won't need heel plates. But if you do alot of walking in the city, I recommend them. If I don't install the plates, some people call them taps, my boots would be leaning to the side in a matter of weeks. I would need a new heel in about 2 months!
@JeremiahCraig
@JeremiahCraig 5 лет назад
@@saleemwaheed9956 Wow new heels every 2 months is nuts! I've never had that problem but I'm interested in what the heel plates would be like. It doesn't look like they're super expensive so I think I want to order some to see what they're like

I can almost buy a new pair for the price of a half sole and a partial heel if you are smart wen you get a new pair of boots they can put a thin piece of rubber on the bottoms of your boot to make them last and a little more traction also if your boots are to tight they can stretch them safely it’s a quite a bit they can stretch them the only stretch they can’t do is to make longer other than that they can widen them the shaft the top of the boot they can stretch them also and the vamp which is toe top of your foot so if ther to tight take to shoe repair and they will make them right for you

Nice video. I've had half soles done on boots in the past with some variations in the technique. One cobbler re-stiched the edging which is a nice true to original touch and glued the sole while another Cobbler just reglued the sole. Is the stitching really effective or more for looks? You see most boots where the threading is worn through on the bottom yet the sole is fine. Another variation is one Cobbler tapers the new half edge to meet the existing sole whereas another does not so there is a pronounced edge where they meet. A few times I've had to use contact cement since the tapered half soles was starting to separate. My favorite boots are Harness square toe boots and I still have several Frye Campus Boots from the '70s; like the block style heels. They sure don't make those like they used to. Problem back then were sizes over 12 were hard to find. As a size 13 (and now almost a 14), it is tough. Fortunately many of my size 13s stretched pretty well so they still fit but my feet better stop growing! Thanks..
@seth_5394
@seth_5394 3 года назад
Some still make them like they used to, but it is expensive to get well made boots. That's the nature of the beast. If stitching is done correctly, a lock stitch maintains a physical hold through half the thickness of the sole as the stitch should be locked in the center. Some do stitch half soles, some don't. I do.

Not particularly. Most cowboy boots are a type of construction called a Goodyear welt and different parts can be replaced. Eventually your foot may wear through the footbed inside. Sewing too many times on a welt will render it unusable, but these can all be replaced. Generally speaking, if the upper of a shoe or boot is good, it can be rebuilt.

It cost at least a hundred dollars to do your soles and heel s that’s in Canada so if you ask me it’s a waste of money if you are smart wen you get your new boots you take to cobbler and get a thin rubber sole over the leather then they are not going to wear I do it to every pair of boots it also makes them not so slippery your heels as soon as the fist piece of rubber gets to the leather part take them in then it is next to nothing to fix your boot wen the rubber wears down to leather go get it replaced with another thin piece of leather it will last at least a year and then you will not hav to resolve your boots

NOPE! That's not what I'm saying at all. If the boots fit worse, they did it wrong just like if a mechanic worked on a car and it drove worse, they fixed it wrong. People can have a job to feed their families but still make mistakes. There are levels of expertise that make some good at what they do and some bad. All boots are not cheaper to buy new than to fix.
