One of the best things I was ever taught was by my old Krav instructor. He asked the group what out longest range weapon was? We ALL said legs. He said nope. And no one ended up getting it. He then said voice is your longest range weapon. But, what reaches longer than voice. And he said eyes. Avoidance beats everything! Most people walk around on white and straight into trouble. I see it ALL the time working in London. Only this morning I watched a woman walking down the road on her own completely oblivious to her surroundings! Alost waiting to be mugged with her eyes buried in her phone. Everyone assumes it won't happen to them. Until it does!

I know that alot of martial arts focus is about control, controlling yourself, the situation and the attacker. But honestly, I think that in defending yourself against an intentional bad guy (not just a guy trying to bully you in a bar) that you have to be pretty cold and ruthless if it's a situation you can't escape out of beforehand. I don't think that it's reasonable to attempt to counter people like this in a 'civilized' way. To defeat a wild dog, and essentially that's what these sociopaths are, you pretty much have to put them down.

Facts. If I ever encountered one of these guys, and I couldn't get away from them, I'd do anything possible to eliminate the threat. You have to have an internal switch and a willingness to kill evil if need be.

I was taught self defense from an individual who was trained by the military and also self taught and he said that if you are aware of your surroundings that makes a world of difference. He said to remember this that a man can't fight if a man can't see, a man can't fight if a man can't breathe and a man can't fight if a man can't walk. I was talking to a gun shop guy yesterday who was attacked by a gang with a baseball bat who smashed the back of his head open, he was armed and shot at them but was too fucked up from the brain trauma to properly fight back. He still scared them so much they ran off. I can’t compare, but I told him about when a guy pulled a knife on me before I started to carry and when I was unarmed in the situation, I ran as fast as I motherfucking could, I ran until my veins pumped battery acid and I kept running. I told him the exact words “I felt like a giant pussy” and he says “dude, the goal of self defense is to stay alive. The book "Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected" has a good categorizational system dividing up predators into three types, status predators, resource predators, and actual predators. It did a good job of describing what each type of predator is after and what things might work on one and won't work on another. For instance, deescalating with a status predator who just wants to look tough for his friends or girlfriend will typically work, because he gets to feel like a big man. Deescalating with an actual predator who is targeting you because he wants to take you to a private place to torture and kill you won't work, because seeming weaker will only cement that you are a better target in his mind.

And that's why I don't go outside much these days. And sadly, me being a scrawny guy works against me so I risk actually getting into a fight which makes me just prefer to avoid everyone. It's just easier that way. Except in most cases people like this will be vastly more capable of harming you. Almost a guarantee in fact. Unless you have a gun or are lucky enough to be an absolute god of fighting. Your intent matching theirs only works if you have a guaranteed way. And many people get killed because they are dumb enough to TRY and match intent when they're far from capable. And no, some martial arts training won't be super effective against someone who's been street fighting their entire lives or is completely willing to kill.
@streetsmarttaekwondo
@streetsmarttaekwondo 2 года назад
The thing about the streets. Is you must look at everyone as being highly dangerous. And this is how you absolutely have to think about every situation. Because of the fact, you don't know how dangerous the person is in front of you. You have to treat them like they are highly volatile and dangerous. There's absolutely no room for a conscience, when defending yourself. Or even any kind of passion at that moment. You fight as though your life depends on it! With everything you have! Bring out that killer instinct! Because your life just may in fact depend on it. My philosophy always has been, and always will be. Treat every conflict with high aggression. That is the only true way to survive. There's plenty of time to feel bad about it. After your life has been saved, and you're still walking around alive. The old saying is. If you can walk away then do it. Problem is, most of the time that isn't possible.
@streetsmarttaekwondo
@streetsmarttaekwondo 2 года назад
@Nigel Shepherd yes true, some people are just out looking for victims. So the important thing, is to not look like one. In other words. Walk with confidence, not cockiness but confidence. Stay alert, and always check your surroundings. Remember, the bad people on the street looking for trouble. Usually have a plan for the attack. So it's important that we train our minds to be ready, and have a plan ourselves. Get a friend and practice different scenarios. Do that a lot! So that it becomes like muscle memory. Now there are instructors out there. Who do not believe, that you can train and plan for altercations. But I beg to differ with them. Practicing Street altercations with someone. Will always give you an edge. Over someone who doesn't practice or train at all. At least then, you'll have some idea what to do.

Situational awareness or presense of mind, quick physical reactions or reflexes, mental strength or toughness, composure or self-confidence, resourcefulness, the instinct or the will to fight back and defend yourself, knowing when to fight back or when to just run away as fast as you can, avoiding people places and situations that potentially lead to heated altercations or violent encounters, and your martial arts/fighting/self-defense skills and techniques (if you have any or some) which you have spent long periods of time practicing and training, can drastically increase your chances of successfully defending yourself and surviving violent self-defense encounters. I remember one occasion as I left a club in Cardiff when I was about 18 years old. Suddenly I was confronted by 3 dudes who adopted an aggressive stance, while I merely stood on the spot and didn't say anything, but what I did do was to confidently survey the 3 of them and sort of gave out a vibe that I wasn't afraid. Suddenly their stance broke and they backed down and walked off, as did I. A strange confrontation that was all about body language and attitude.

Not really, in most cases like this they already have all control. This statement is most often a sign that you can escape the situation if you comply. Even if it's just a trick there isn't any point to it. If am kidnapped and you plan on killing me after I comply then am dead if am kidnapped and I don't comply then you can kill me anyways.

Dr. Mark thanks for putting this up. Interesting on many different levels- these guys have managed to do enough mental gymnastics to justify (to themselves) victimizing other people and committing crime. I suspect they have a notion of the world as a jungle, they see themselves as an apex predator and other people exist only to get them what they want. It is their fault for being prey....There are a lot of holes in this very limited perspective and it's convenient for them to ignore that. If they are incarcerated for long periods of time, that is definitely an opportunity to think it through. Also interesting that he does seem to have some notion of things being not quite right- the sadness he spoke of may be an idea that he is missing some information. He does seem to know that there are consequences for these kind of choices and seems to feel that he is past the point of any return from it. Not only is law enforcement looking for him, (in theory) the other members of his own cartel could take him down, plus other cartels could kidnap him and torture him to death. I have no idea how you could sleep. But they can be the hero of their story for a little while until the morgue or prison.....If what you respect and value is money, power, violence, this will be a powerful magnet for extremely bad Karma. As a spiritual person, I can barely imagine the consequences in store for this guy....a very very long journey ahead at best. And yes, part of the solution to the problem of crime is to be a harder target. Probably not just one or two day workshops but more like a semester of undergrad coursework at the minimum.

@oyajiblues

My wife I Japanese. She had no situational awareness at all. So every time we were out and there was a sketchy guy, or the hairs on my neck told me there was danger I would point it out to her. I would ask there is possible danger right now, what is it? Eventually she would scan the people for the potential danger. It took longer to teach her to be aware of other things like intimate objects that might point to danger. A van driving around the parking lot repeatedly;y with no windows. She also has learned to not be timid when being approached. And yes, calculate an escape route... You videos are a breath of fresh air in the onslaught of hilarious teachers who want to teach you techniques that will get you killed. I just saw a classic video of a guy going after the robbers gun. He has a hold of the guy and is trying to control the gun arm. The robber steps back slightly and rips his gun hand free and shoots the guy in the top of the head. Here in San Francisco a few years ago a guy who owned a dojo (of what style doesn't matter) he is coming home from the dojo wearing his gee. Or some clothing that represented his dojo. After the altercation while driving they come to a light and he gets out and walks up to the offending driver, but before he can utter a word, Bam. Shot in the face... dead.

Being bullied from a young age, it took time to build confidence in my own abilities. After i had squared off with a few of them & came off ok, i developed from there. Now in my 50's, aware of my own strengths n weaknesses, i am always situationally aware, viewing my home, life & location from the outside in. Thinking like a predator with no boundries, i see the potential weak points around my home, family & self. My home is semi rural with livestock. A potential threat is always on my mind. With the use of white electric fence tape mounted high along the property fenceline & warning signs, it reduces the opportunistic attempts. If they are not put off by the wire & gain access, i have purposefully made their exit difficult with barbed wire & strong stainless bird spikes secured along all solid fencelines & entry gates to make it difficult to climb over,. Doing this i successfully funnel any potential threat directly to a highly lit & camera observed area. Due to mobile device alerts, i am already aware of them & from my vantage point i can see what i am dealing with to gauge whether to confront, shoot or watch them struggle for their own freedom. A great static defence. This pre-emptive set up works & has been tested thanks to potential thieves who now know better. I learnt while in the army a basic saying... The 6 P's. Prior Preparation Prevents a Piss Poor Performance. Think like an elite forward observer, be ready for anything yet minimise it's actuality. Engage on your terms, not theirs.

I've met this type, and have never been targeted by them. I don't go looking for trouble but if it finds me, it makes me angry instead of fearful. Sure I get the adrenaline rush, but I will tend to turn that into sheer cruelty. I am only 5'11" and 150 lbs. But if I am fucked with my size doesn't matter, all bets are off and I am simply focused on the enjoyment of inflicting as much damage as I am able and get it done as fast as possible. In other words, Zero to 100 in a split second, reasonable and agreeable to irrational and overwhelmingly violent in the blink of an eye.

What you said about committing fully when faced with violent offenders is true. I find it hard to commit to hard sparing sessions or going hard in martial arts drills as I always practice restraint on my partners. This in turn makes me think I would hesitate in life threatening situations
@e.e.8589
@e.e.8589 2 года назад
I think tabata drills are great for that, with a heavy bag or a red man. Of course you cant break joints and destroy faces during that drill, but you can train to bring that intensity
@misterarminius5907
@misterarminius5907 Год назад
Sparing (sadly) should always be done with taking the sting out. But indeed, use other means to practice your skills while really ampting up the killer inside of you. Also, do this daily, choose what you will do and what you'll be like when the moment happens. Mentally prepare yourself by visualising the scenarios over and over again. I truly believe that repeated mental visualisation of how you inflict violence on an attacker is superior over just beating the bag. If you don't visualise yourself to be a psycho aga8nst another human, you might freeze when you really get attacked by another human. You hard punches against the back must be (mentally) directed at a human, not a bag (hope that makes sense), so you use them accordingly.

I agree with you. When I tell people to stop saying that other people's feelings don't matter and to care about how others feel, I do so because, in my opinion, if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time and you get punched, stabbed, or shot in the face, you got what you deserved. However, I am not defending violent actions as the right thing to do; rather, I am arguing that such violent actions are entirely understandable and it was an avoidable situation.

Absolutely I learned that the hard way. We train boxing in the park and comes one guy who has so fragile ego that he just goes all out in the training. And I decide to see if he is still a thrash, so I invite him into a round. We start the round and he is like that mentality for dominance in the beginning. I just smile and stay calm but at one point I gave him a warning and he doesn't listen. So I decide I had enough, didn't get enough sleep and now this. So I try to knock him out. Didn't worked but I just realized with some people you have to be a fckin monster they don't understand from anything else. From that day on I realized that you have to be like them in that manner. When attacker comes and wants to treaten your health you will have to threaten his. But just be calmer I that manner. While doing it. And also we require situational awareness to be able to be really effective and not panic and do that to someone who is just into joke or a friend.
