I am the only sustainable human in my circle, my solution has been "lead by example rather than preaching" people are more likely to pick up on better life choices if they're seeing it be done in front of them and learning their own way, rather than having it forced on them. Hope that helps ☺️ Patience really pays off in the end, and hope. Always have hope 🌱

Remember DVDs and VHS tapes? How much less plastic is being used by watching movies and other content online than buying these items - and something to store them in? No fuel used in trips to the store to buy them. Likewise, one delivery driver taking 10 parcels ordered online to one area rather than 10 car journeys by individuals. Energy consumed by the internet can be no worse.
@alyssia7239
@alyssia7239 3 года назад
True. The problem is... we watch a lot more ! Think of how many movies, tv shows, youtube or songs you have consumed vs how many you would have consumed if you had to get them not digitally. The problem stands there. We consume a lot more. Like a huge lot more. We would never have watched videos on the toilet or in public transports before...
@Irene-gq4jr
@Irene-gq4jr 3 года назад
@@alyssia7239 That's a good point. I'm not one of those glued to my phone, but I do see many who are. I'm also a tech, familiar with server rooms and I know how much energy these beasts use (it's a lot). But we can't have it all ways, we all consume too much of everything, and the internet is probably the lesser of many evils.

Also, push your legislators to go 100% renewable for energy. I am fortunate to live in California and we are on track to transition 100% by 2045. Other places can do this too, which largely eliminates the energy consumption carbon footprint

I’m guessing that the internet is more sustainable then the amount of paper that would be needed to communicate the same amount of information to the same amount of people.
@MsRainingDays
@MsRainingDays 3 года назад
This is an interesting question. I'll guess the answer had to do with what do you take into account: 1) net CO2 production, and here I'll guess internet is more polluting or 2) resource mismanagement + poor landfill solutions
@azhrayharris8
@azhrayharris8 3 года назад
@@MsRainingDays I mostly agree with you, but I would argue that paper production produces more waste. Speaking for myself only, I am not a hyper consumer of digital media and I was pretty inept at my attempts to be “green” prior to having access to you tube (you can ask my wife about my disaster of an attempt at composting). So the amount of energy I use on the internet is very much worth the impact it has had on my carbon footprint in other areas.

The plate thing is just ridiculous. We've had the same set of plates (at least the ones that haven't broken) for the 16 years we've lived in Canada. Sure, we bought them new, and they did take resources to manufacture, ship, etc, but do you know how many disposable plates we would have used in 16 years as a family of four?! Seriously, disposable plates are just ridiculous in my opinion.

@@lanakayphillips2849 That's awesome that you are living life trying to be as sustainable as possible. So am I. I am 38 years old and am speaking from experience of what I've observed in my hometown. Most of the local population are the parents and grandparents of people my age (so ages 60-70+). I've taken quick glances around most people's houses and yards (just while riding down the road, going about my day's tasks), they're hoarding stuff like crazy. If they weren't, everything they own would fit inside their houses. No one seems to think of minimalism in this town. Minimalism, eco friendly, helping out someone by giving them that unneeded stuff, and having a cleaner house without so much stuff in and around it. Despite the abundance of places to donate items in this little town, I've heard many stories of (senior citizens and their families) throwing perfectly useable stuff in the city dump, which saddens my heart. So donating seems to not even come up as an idea in their brains but "trash it" is.

On the internet’s carbon footprint: a coworker pointed out to me that a lot of progress has been made with reducing component sizes meaning less space taken up and less energy needed to cool down. Eg the size of our server room has gone down a lot in the past 10 year. Of course that doesn’t account for the increase in demand and activity on the internet globally. I did this last year for my partner and now I have an easy gift every year. The con here would of course be the storing of the calendar for the next year.

Daizy Blaze Yes! The same goes for junk mail/ miscellaneous advertisements/ brochures. If even 50% (not sure the actual number, but it’s probably more than that) of paper mail is just junk that is immediately tossed, that’s just another issue that corporations/ big organizations are more responsible for than average person, isn’t it? Also, in my management information systems class I took last semester, our textbook (from 2015) said over 80% of all emails are spam/ junk. It would seem that the junk takes up a lot more server space than the average person too (if we look at emails specifically).

Funny/frustrating story tho - my local USPS office told me I could deliver a note to my letter carrier asking them not to deliver the weekly coupon mailer. I waited to catch him and hand it over in person (I lived in an apartment complex so I had to know when he was coming). When I finally cought him, he said I could give him the letter, but it wouldn't change anything. He was required to deliver everything that was assigned to my mail box per the sorting at the local USPS. That makes sense, but still... so annoying.

@@bonniea8189 Yes, I totally agree! It is literally impossible to opt out & they sell your information to others too. I donate to a small handful of charities (the majority of which are for environmental causes, ironically), yet I have received mail from literally over 100 different organizations, most of which I have had no previous contact with and some of which support causes that are in direct opposition to causes that I support. To opt out of receiving mailings, you literally have to contact each charity 1 by 1, but you also have to separately opt out of having your information sold, otherwise they will continue to spread it and your mailings from random organizations will multiply exponentially. And it's especially sad that very few charities (even environmental ones) acknowledge this problem at all. The only one I know who really has is Union of Concerned Scientists. Most others are complacent.

I can only imagine the diff it's made for people who have been able to get their education online and then be able to use their degrees to transform their communities!

Yes, the internet is a form of waste BUT like you said IT IS SO VALUABLE! I think we can all stop mindlessly scrolling so much and mindlessly streaming (like try not to fall asleep with Netflix rolling for hours or have Spotify and Netflix and RU-vid on all at once) but wow the internet has helped this movement and other important movements SO much especially this year and organizing rallies. We need the internet for change, I think we just need to be mindful with our use!

For the "I voted" stickers, Mexico has a solution; when we vote, our thumbs are marked with some kind of ink, that ink can come in plastic roll-ons but also on pads.
@Silverstreamhomecrafts
@Silverstreamhomecrafts 3 года назад
That's quite clever. Here in Northern Ireland we don't have anything to show we voted. People here barely want to vote once though
@silviamancinelli1099
@silviamancinelli1099 3 года назад
In Italy we have a "voting card" which lasts 18 elections. When you go voting we have an ink stamp with the date and another one with the stamp of the ballot, it's used as a way to doublecheck that you already voted and you can't do it again but also as a way to show people that you have voted (as it is illegal to take a picture of your voting choice in the ballot). The stamps are the same every year and the ink pads are then returned and used in the administration offices, so all in all there's no waste. But of the other hand there is a lot of paper waste as we are automatically sign up for voting if we are at least 18yo.

I feel like as someone who is newer to the zerowaste/ sustainability life style and often struggling with the *exitiential dread* that seems to come with figuring out how and what to change first, I'm more taking the idea of things working smarter for me and the planet rather than not existing at all/ leaving no waste/ having no impact. From all the things I've watched and read the two overarching solutions seem to be 1. We all start living like medieval peasants again and thanos snap like 8/10ths of the population away. Or 2. We start making things we do work harder for everyone. We make a circular economy happen and we think about how everyone's needs can be provided for, we encourage less population in the future and we start making an actual plan that covers not just one city or country but the whole world. This links a lot with your point about the Internet. Wide spread social change has historically been limited by how to contact people. Well we have the beginning of a solution to get an idea of what everyone thinks now. The Internet may have a carbon footprint but its a reason we can have people work from home ( less car use), have digital bills instead of paper ( less tree cutting), redistribute knowledge and resources where they are truly needed( global problem solving) and much more. The climate problem started without the help of the Internet, but the Internet may be our best tool to find more economic solutions to problems. Anyways thats my little rant to get people to work smarter, not harder.

I stood up and applauded at 9:51 to 10:10 Yes! That's what I always tell my family. Since I have begun to let go of 98% of my personal items, most were plastic and a few porcelain. I do not want to own anything to do with plastic, in some few cases, when an item comes with plastic I put it in a box which is lined with a recyclable bag. Once that bag is filled to the top or mid I can bring it to my supermarket where it says 'Bring all your bags, we can recycle them. Thank you for your help!' Yes, I did research them, they are legit and they do recycle most plastic bags, but they have to be clean.

Most of the water that is wasted in the world is from unknown sources in nature. Water that we use in day to day life is measured and monitored. It being monitored leads to WAY less leaks and water waste. In comparison water that we waste is a fraction of the total. Therefore washing dishes has a smaller footprint in the environment rather than using disposable ones. (I'm sure there are appropriate terms for what I'm trying to explain but I don't remember them since I took an eng water design class about a year ago and have the memory of a fish)

Another thing about the internet one: those carbon emissions are based on electricity usage As we move more and more to renewable energy, electricity becomes more and more sustainable. In this case though it's not just your local power grid that matters, since you could be connecting through a server that's anywhere in the world.

I'd been very worried about my internet usage during the pandemic, partly for environmental reasons. But also I have many other things I need to adjust in my life before I worry about internet for environmental reasons. I do think the most sustainable options are changes you can make for the long haul, and I don't think lowering my internet usage is one I can consistently stick to lol. Removing paper towels, avoiding single-use plastic, avoiding unnecessary disposables, eliminating my junk mail, etc. Are all changes I need to make first and feel like I can actually accomplish. Edit: also I agree!!! The internet has been immensely useful in keeping me informed and helping me find ways I can be a better activist and learn about other topics I am interested in.

I think that something we should keep in mind with the is internet sustainable debate is that apps like Zoom make it possible to speak at or attend certain events on the other side of the world. so yes, you are spending several hours online, it is instead of flying. so while the internet can definitely be a lot more sustainable (for example by using renewable energy for servers) we should also consider its emissions relative to what it's replacing

I find it to be really hypocritical how some people who make money from posting/using/recording information and spreading it via the internet tell their followers that we shouldn't be using the internet and streaming services. The best way to reduce the impact of the internet on the environment is probably to make sure that your email box is as empty as possible. Email aren’t usually useful after you read them and keeping them in our mailboxes consumes a lot of energy, which means at the end a lot of CO2. So, it’s a great compromise if you want to use the internet but make it a little more eco-conscious

I recall driving 15 miles to a library and sifting through old sources to get no information. Not knowing about the world around me and only finding what those in power chose to feed the masses, or the stifled sectarianism pushed down my throat. I will do most anything to keep my link to truth. With internet consumption, I will gladly work hard to offset that trade every day of my life in order to access information previously unavailable. Thank you Shelby for presenting that information. On disposable vs washing reusable plates, look up how to wash dishes. Doing it with little water has been a thing forever and there is no disposable that uses less.

I think there's definitely a lot of space of nuanced talk about sustainability. For one, there is no sustainability regulation body of sorts that would makes sure when we talk about sustainability it is all on the same scale at least. When people talk about sustainability, a lot of it is costumer facing stuff, glass jars and all that. But then again, as a consumer it is insane work to track every single ingredient and processing step to make sure it is something we are comfortable it, especially when it comes to sustainability which is such a broad and vague term. Anyway, I want to say that it is great to see more nuanced talk in these spaces. But I think I would prefer hearing a list of points on each side rather than purely your personal opinion. But this is a good start, nevertheless.

Hi Shelbizlee! Thank you so much for your work and the valuable information you give us access to. I have a dilemma related to the topic of the video that I think you can help me to solve. My compost situation has changed and the current best option I have found is driving, go and back, almost 40 minutes total, in a hybrid car, to a convenient recycling center, every 2 weeks. My husband thinks that at the end this is less sustainable than just throwing the food waste in the regular trash bin. The household is 2 people and we made most of our meals from scratch. I'd really appreciate your insight. Thanks!

Thank you for addressing that the internet isn't all bad just because it needs resources. I'm from a small village in a rural area in Germany (~500 people live in the village) I always was passionate about the environment and science the only way I could learn about true sustainability (beyond the recycling lies and knowing to use tote bags and bring your own water bottle) was the internet. We learned a little bit in school about sustainability but not much about it. So all the small tips and tricks I've learned basically on RU-vid. Now I'm living in citys since 2013 and everything is more accessible to me. But before I would be quite unaware and lost without the internet. And it made me feel less as a weirdo when all the other girls were horse back riding and learning to play instruments while I was only watching documentaries about science. Now I'm working in science myself and I'm pretty sure it was thanks to the internet that I held on to my dreams

If you decide to make this a series (which would be great!), you could add "buying zero-waste/ sustainable products online". Sometimes people think that it's better to buy what is available in store even if it's less sustainable because that way it doesn't get shipped directly to your house. And also, I have had people tell me that "buying something new (as in recent and never used) second-hand is the same as buying the product from the store". To me there is a big difference, because even if it's for example the latest iPhone, if you are buying it from someone who changed their mind or got a different phone, you are not funding Apple with your money nor creating a demand for a phone to be created to replace the one you bought. Hope I made sense ?
