As I worked in a salon for practice while in a school that was a mix of high school and cos school. I NEVER tried to force a product down someone’s throat. I’ve been a client for years before starting school and I never really had the money to buy extravagant products. I’m very awkward and self conscious. I need, need, need my stylist to talk to me. About anything. I want a bubbly funny person because it’ll help me open up. Trying to find a stylist who’ll hopefully be my “go to” someday. Haven’t found him/ her yet. 😫

I'm always worried about the product pushing. I use Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner. Doesn't seem to matter which one, I have used a few different ones over the years, but any other brand - even one that my grandma swore by - make my hair feel gross. Don't really care what shampoo you recommend, if you want me to use a colour safe one, I'll go get the HE colour safe one. Not using your salon brand, because from my experience, chances are it'll make my hair angry.

I absolutely hate when a stylist tells me how "dry and damaged" my hair is. As a former hairdresser, I know! I'm well aware how shit my hair is. I've told you my hair history, I know exactly what's wrong with it so you know how to fix it so I don't have to. This happened about three weeks ago after moving to a new state, and the stylist there just kept repeating over and over--loudly, to anyone who would listen how crap to mop on my head was. I'm paying you to help me, not mock me. By the way, I just found this channel and I relate to pretty much every video I've watched so far. 😂

NEVER intentional, at least from my part. I hate it when stylist complain about my hair, to EVERYONE in the salon. My hair is really thick and also very coarse, so whenever I book an appointment over the phone, I always give a warning and ask if they require me to pay more because of this. I will even tip 50% or more because I understand how hard my hair is. So it pisses me off when they start cutting my hair and start saying shit like "Ugh, I'm gonna have to do this with the clippers because if I used my sheers I'd be here forever and that hardly seems fair." Or "Omg look [insert other stylist's name here], her hair is just so thick, why do I always get stuck doing this type of hair?"

Curly hair is such a FIGHT! I've walked into salons and had them say "oh sorry we're not trained to cut curls". I prefer a dry cut so it's more even and I get that not everyone will do that but the reason I prefer now is because more than once theyll not notice that curls bounce up more than straight hair and the cut comes out uneven as hell. Then to even it out they have to go so much shorter than expected when I'd been warning them the entire time. That happened twice.

Florence Deadly Huge fight! I recently had a stylist use thinning shears on my curls and I didn’t notice until it was too late because I was looking at my phone and trusted him to make normal layers. I agree with the last reason. I had long hair, down to my hips and I asked for a 1 inche trim. The hairstylist CHOPPED my hair just above my breasts, gave me layers and dora bangs. I was extremely upset and the stylist said that she made me look better. Everyone said the haircut looked refreshing but I HATED IT, I spent YEARS getting my hair to that length and then when I wenr for another trim, another stylist gave me a DORA haircut. I looked horrible. its been 4 years and my hair is barely reaching my waist and I havent been to the salon since. I trim my own hair now

Jasmine Gomez I’m so sorry!! I’m no longer a hairstylist, but I had so many clients terrified and rightfully so of having too much hair chopped off. I would do exactly as she said in this video. If they were new I would cut off less then what they wanted have them look at it and cut more if they wanted. I basically showed them every cut I was making even in the mirror. I felt so bad for people who had been scarred by other hairstylists. I really wanted people to feel safe with me. I have no idea what the benefit is off cutting too much of someone’s hair off and I heard that all the time. And someone said they made you look better. 🙄 ummm no, this isn’t a makeover show where you said go ahead and do whatever you want. You should get what you ask for. I really hope you can find someone that you trust. Ask friends who to go to or people you love on Instagram. 😘

Canela26 Small talk is part of their job. As a professional stylist or cosmetologists so that their client doesn’t get bored or awkward. And also to get to know their client just to see what type of person she is and what they can do to treat them in the best way so that they can leave happy and satisfied. I know it’s not always easy because as a client myself don’t really like it, but it is something that is said that they must do for the job. I have a rare natural hair colour, and I had an experience where I had a salon owner accuse me of dyeing my hair and arguing with me until she called two stylists and a senior colorist to verify that my hair was my own natural color. Upon close inspection the senior colorist confirmed that it was in fact my natural color and by that time I felt embarrassed in front of the staff that I was treated like I was lying on my own hair

Jadie I have a dark red hair color, with copper tones throughout, which tend to look like highlights (and I’m mixed black and white so it’s a curly texture). If I want to dye my hair a different colour it sometimes becomes an issue because the stylist often assumes my natural color is artificial they think they are adding a layer of dye over previously dyed hair.

I love that too..I hate layers and thin out hair..I use to love them when I was very young, but now I just like to have my natural high volume hair..one length with bangs... But I cut my bangs myself, t took me 2-3 months to learn how to to it, now it is easy.. I had to learn because my hair grows fast 2,5cm every 30 days..I dye my hair every 15 days and cut my bangs once or twice a month depend if I like it shorter or not. When you have a lot of hair..one length is perfect...but if you do not have a lot..layers are better, one length with low volume hair is so bad, I have seen it. So maybe this is way people tend to go with layers more. If you want layers and volume you have to style your hair. But with one length and having a lot of hair...you do not have to style it...just brush it or make a braid...and voila, that is done...beautiful full volume hair with a lot of shine. It took me a long time to find a hairstylist that wants to cut my hair like that...and one more bonus with one length - less split ends..almost none, even after a year none..so soft and silky..and great volume..Now I am at a year and a half..maybe a year and 8 moths not sure, and now it is starting to get a little dry at the ends, so I will get a trim

The last one!! I was raised in a salon, my mom is a nail tech and owner of the salon. I have a fair amount of knowledge. BUT I showed a picture to the hair stylist of bright red with platinum blonde ends and a few blonde peekaboo streaks that went with the model's side bangs to bends into the ends. I loved the dramatic difference and brightness. And the stylist said she could do it. As I look at the color in the bowls, it doesn't look like I had thought. Stylist assures me that she is doing exactly what I want. Uh, okay. Washes me out... I'm warm Auburn red/brown/natural type color with some honey gold ends ombre style. I could've cried. I showed her the picture again and she said, well I dont do those crazy colors, so I gave you a naturalesque more wearable version. I wanted RED and white, got warm brown and gold. I hated my hair for months and didnt trust her to go back and make her fix it. I waited until mom filled the second station and went to THAT stylist who DID do fun colors. She and I had an amazing few years of playing with hair

The last one, omg the LAST ONE! My hair was super long and I get chronic migraines. It’s because my hair is super heavy and I know that. So I went in and asked them for a long bob. I told them I knew my curly hair would shrink up, and I knew that this was the style I want. The stylists kept refusing, saying it was too drastic of a change and I would regret it. (I had a long bob several years before and loved it, and it was my curls “happy length”, so I knew it was what I wanted). I explained over and over that it was what I wanted, until I got so fed up that I said I’d cut it myself and they would have to correct it, or they could take my money and cut it for me.

That's so crazy! I totally get that sometimes people ask for really drastic changes without realizing how it'll actually look. But if you've had a similar cut before and know that it's what you want, why the hell wouldn't they just do it?! I'm not there to get a lecture on how it dries and damages hair. I know that I'm not a pro and that my hair is a little damaged from it. I'm there to get my cut. That's it. And I wouldnt have such an issue if they didn't say it in such a degrading manner. Also.. One time I asked for my hair cut to my shoulders and suddenly my stylist said "oh! Do you get upset when a waitress or waiter asks if you’d like an appetizer, salad, dessert, etc.? It’s part of a stylist’s job to cover all of your hair care needs. You have the option to politely decline.

Hairstylist here! I feel bad when a client tells me about there home care routine shamefully because they probably had a similar experience. I tell them not to be embarrassed because these big commercial brands are damn good at marketing. I say that beauty professionals (myself included) failed to educate them and failed to provide information to help selecting products.

This may be because I'm older, but I always liked it whenever the stylist engaged with me when she was doing my hair. I hate it when I went and the stylist would just ask for my name and what I wanted and then ignore me for the entire rest of the time. The younger clients I have dont care much since they spend the entire appointment on their phone, but I for sure like to be talked to.

I’ve always heard the hair cutting horror stories about clients asking for a certain length, and getting way more than they wanted. Which makes me thankful for my hair stylist who takes my hair, and makes me demonstrate where I want it cut so she knows where to exactly cut, and how much of it. I never realized how much of a blessing in disguise it was until I started watching hair cut videos.

Girl you speak the truth! Especially the part about inches. Like, most people don't really understand what an inch is. It's more like a guesstimate, so having someone explain what that would actually look like, I feel, would eliminate a good portion of the "bad hair" experience a lot of people have at the salon. And just great communication in general is a big help 😊 you sound like a great hairstylist, keep it up!

As a new stylist your videos have been very helpful to me. The one you mentioned about gossiping really stood out to me, gossiping is a big no for the salon. One time, as a teenager, I had colored my hair at home with box dye. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great and, a few months later, the color was gone but some of my lengths still looked a little scorched from the ammonia. It didn't look great but I knew it would grow out eventually and I chalked it up as a learning experience. I didn't care enough to try and recolor it myself and I certainly didn't have the money to get it professionally done. However, I needed a haircut, so I went to get one. The stylist spent the whole time talking about how horrible my hair color looked and how I should let him fix it, go to him for color from now on, and never touch a box of dye again. I totally got where he was coming from but he completely lacked any tact and acted like I had committed a shameful, mortal sin for experimenting with box dye. I felt stupid and embarrassed but also SO PISSED because I knew I didn't deserve to be shamed like that.. He also completely ignored me when I told him multiple times that I don't have the money for color services (I was a teenager!) and just kept harassing me about it. That's literally the only time I tipped $0 for any kind of service in my life.

I’m more of a shy suffer in silence kind of person, which has made it hard for me to enjoy experiences at salons in the past. Not only hair salons but also nail salons. My last haircut (which was on Friday) went fine, but the stylist was gossiping about their new coworker and, not to be mean or rude, but my stylists breath smelled pretty bad lmao.

The double booking commentary is SO TRUE. Two weeks ago my new hairstylist sat me to the side with highlights in and promised to check on me in ten minutes. Then her second client comes in, and she totally focuses on them for forty minutes. My hair has ridiculously light stripes now (and is a bob, instead of the chest length I asked to keep, and got fried from her attempts at styling it).

I guess I’m super lucky! My hair stylist is sooo good! She asks before I even sit how I want my hair and she already knows. I ask her for pointers and she makes me feel like my say is more important! She literally takes the most 15 minutes trimming my hair. I have thick curly hair and my hair grows so quickly ever since I’ve gone to her! And most importantly one time I told her I have anxiety and that if I get quiet it might be because it was kicking in. From then on she avoids small talk and hums the entire time I’m in her chair which I loooove❤️ makes me feel cozy and safe!!! Then again I’ve been going to her for 15 yrs now and has never changed!! I pay her a visit every 4 months for a trim as she suggests. I love her so much!!!

Nail on the head. My biggest peeves were the hairstylists would ignore me and do whatever they thought looked better. also am a bit introverted and shy, so I’m not a fan of being asked too much about my personal life or if the stylist is super chatty. FINALLY, when stylists gossip to each other in general but definitely in another language. I speak multiple languages and the rude things that stylists say is beyond me. I haven’t stepped into a hair salon in 10 years and learned to do my own hair because of these things.

The talking down to you thing is my biggest salon peeve! So over that crap, and I love your videos cause you DON'T have that attitude. I always tell the stylist what I've done to my hair, how I want it, what processes/techniques work best on me and which don't, and I get a thinly-veiled "yeah okay, I'M the professional sweaty" Everyone's hair is different and you have to adapt your approach to each client, but some stylists just do whatever they want and completely dismiss all your input. Not to be ageist or anything either, but it's usually the really young ones who just got their license that do this. Last time the stylist was literally half my age and tried to tell me the products and techniques I've used on my hair(with good results) for the past 20 years were awful and inferior. Girl, what? I get that stylists can be on the defense from dealing with a lot of super picky or crazy clients but I'm not one of those. I'm always SO polite, I never complain about prices or try to get freebies, and if I have an aversion to something they want to do I explain why so they know I'm not just doubting their skills. I ask questions about what they're doing/using on my hair because I genuinely find it interesting, but some have even acted offended about that! I came ~thisclose~ to going to beauty school myself and it's still a huge interest. I keep up with the industry and I love studying techniques, products, the chemistry behind coloring, etc. I'm not some dummy who throws a fit cause I can't go from box black to blonde on my lunch break. Back before I could afford to go to salons, I did my own hair out of necessity and learned a TON just through trial and error. Just because I'm not licensed doesn't mean I'm an idiot who can't possibly know anything about hair.

the last time i went to a salon (it's been a couple of years) i went in with a home cut undercut and home bleached and dyed hair and specifically told the stylist that i only need help with shaping the long part of my hair. and she was amazing. i apologised for the state my hair was in (as i said home bleached) and she just said oh don't worry about it that's totally normal, if you do it yourself. she even gave me some tips how to improve my home dye game. i really felt like she understood me. i couldn't afford to get my colour done at the salon but i was 19 at the time so i also didn't care if my pink hair was kinda patchy or my undercut not super symmetrical (i have a loot of hair so the bob cut she did with the long part wasn't impacted by my janky shave).

I always made it clear that I wanted my bangs eyebrow level, maybe just a tad above the eyebrow. This lady hen grabbed my bangs and did it almost 2 inches above. She got only halfway across and I pulled back going "Woe, what are you doing?" and she claimed I didn't tell her what length to make them. I think she just thought I would look better with them short so just did it anyway. I was so angry inside but didn't really let on. I wore a hat for four weeks till it grew back. Hated it.

Last time i went to a hairdresser i wanted to colour my hair.I tould the hairstylist that she probably need to byu two specific colours and since i wanted an in between colour (the colours where purple and burgundy,i wanted a dark magenta) that since this colour doesnt exist in this brand she would probably mix the two slowly to make the dark magenta. But no she didnt do that. She mixed permanent burgundy colour with semi permanent purple colour and when she almost run out of the mixture she put mor permanent burgundy in.The mixture had already became more burgundy than the purple i wanted since the colour had oxidized. The result was that my hair had 3 different colours, one half was purple with some blue pieces and the other was completely burgundy. It took 2 to conpletely grow out the colour, because every time i dyed my hair after that it was two different colours and i really didnt want anymore split dyed hair. That was the only reason that i went to a salon to get my hair done.I wanted an overall colour and i still ended up with two completely different colours that i had no way of evening out since i didnt want my already bleached hair to be tounched again with bleach and i would not dye my hair black to have it bleached later and cause even more damage when i wanted to have it lightened to a pale blond

I've gotten "stylist" completely ignore me and tell me they know better and will do with my hair as they please even tho I insisted I didn't want something a certain way or told them to stop cutting. I even had one lady tell me I was a baby and to deal with it because she was blow-drying my hair so rough and burning me so much I was in tears, she didn't stop at all, and I was a little kid, like 11. Most stylist I encountered in my country would be rude and hurt or in the best case just not listen. That's why I started experimenting with my own hair and slowly learning to do everything. I also love how I've had stylists tell me how pretty my hair is and the *second I tell them I do my color myself, they start telling me how I shouldn't blah blah blah but 5 seconds ago you were telling me how beautiful it was.. 😑 you are spot-on about leaving someone under the dryer too long this is exactly why I started coloring again myself because my stylist would absolutely leave me, go eat their lunch, forget, and it never ended up well I was so pissed.

She cut my hair and immediately blow dried it and curled it, we didn't even check the length or layers...you can't really tell how your hair is when it is curled. Anyways, I got home and it was really wonky. Like, my "layers" was a straight line halfway up my head...it was not blended at all 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Honestly, I dread going to get my hair done more than I dread getting a PAP smear or even like a Brazilian wax. I would say it's about on par with going to the dentist. "Pampered", I wish. A lot of the things you already mentioned, but the worst for me is when I go for a trim and the hair stylist makes sure to point out all my split ends and how bad it looks, and keeps banging on about it over and over and over. I know about the split ends, that's why I'm here! What does harping on about it, making me feel like complete shit, accomplish? Also when they are washing my hair in the bowl and tell me to hold my head up. I think some stylists can't figure out how to reach the back of the head unless you hold your head up so your chin is going towards your chest. Or they seat me too close to the bowl or my head is too big to fit in it or some shit. Anyway, I have long hair and it gets seriously heavy. Holding my head up in that position with all that weight is a massive strain on my neck. But they tell me to hold it for so long. And I assume this is a normal thing that normal women have to do all the time, or else why would they make me do it? So I feel too embarrassed to admit that it's difficult and it hurts. I just bear it for what feels like hours until they finally let me relax.

I’ve been having highlights put in my hair for the past 5 years now, last year my regular hair stylists mum had passed away and I was desperate for a root touch up so I went to a local salon. I told her I just wanted a root touch up and that I just get highlights and a trim, first thing she asked me is if I also wanted brown putting in. I told her no I only ever have the blonde put in and the brown already in my hair is just my natural colour. I must have only been in the salon for about an hour (it usually takes at least 4 hours because my hair is thick and always takes time to take to the bleach) I’m a really shy person so I didn’t want to ask her to leave it on longer, she had also spilled bleach on my top and by then I just wanted to get out. So I paid and left, it was super brassy and looked borderline orange after the first wash, I left it a month before going back to my regular stylist who told me I’d had a strange brown colour added to my hair too. I daren’t go to anyone but my regular stylist now😬

Omg I had one stylist that I loved but EVERYTIME she rinsed me, the hair at the bottom would still have color, shampoo, and conditioner not washed out
