This is my first time learning the terms “left” and “right” branching languages. I actually didn’t notice until now how English modifiers often branch to the right, so the way you contrasted the English and Chinese structures really helps. Thanks as always.🙂

Would you please make a “Comprehensive” video on frequently used dialogues on C-Dramas? Is there any difference in the dialogues in Historical/ Wuxia and Modern dramas? It’ll be more easy to learn the daily uses sentences and more fun and enjoyable to watch those dramas. Also, we can focus on what the actors are saying rather than focusing on subtitles. - A humble C-Drama viewer 😊

I noticed that Chinese grammar is almost the same as Korean grammar, except the SVO form. The noun modifiers are also placed before the noun in korean as well. In korean, you add ㄴ/은, which works like 的 in most cases.

Hi Grace! My native language is Turkish and is also a left side language. For example; eve gelen(who came home) çocuk (kid) = Kid who came home. I was always trying to use English word order when I try to practice my Chinese because i heard that they are both SVO, so close; but thank you, I won't try it anymore.👍🏻 Day by day, I see that Chinese is not only similar to English but also Turkish. It is close to agglilative languages around of it. We also add "mı, mi, mu, mü" to ask yes and no questions in Turkish. For example; "İyi mi?" means "Is s/he/it good?", and in Chinese it is 好吗?(hǎo ma?). We also have common words like yen- in Turkish, (means to win, from Ottoman Turkish yeng-, Old Turkic yeng-), 赢 (yíng)in Chinese (means to win), etc. I didn't know we have that much common. That makes me more enthusiastic to learn Chinese. Even though Chinese is not a agglilative language, it doesn't have irregular verbs as in any agglilative language. It is just like an agglilative language. For example we add -dı/di/du/dü to end of the verbs to create past tense, and you do the same thing with 了(le). Same for the other tenses. No irregularity, no plural suffix after plural objects (as in two pencils), no gender... I'm lucky than the other guys here who speak only English. Because i think Chinese grammatically is between Turkic and English. If there was Latin alphabet and no tones, it would be a piece of cake for me❣️✌🏻

hi grace, i am learning chinese and I learned Russian before. you might find it interesting to know that in the present tense, in russian the verb to be is ellipsed, nearly as in chinese. no need to add a degree but a bit similar. the lamp is blue, becomes lamp blue(lampa sinaya) or I am grace becomes I grace ( ya grace) . my theory is that in most languages the most common words tend to evolve quicker and follow different rules> the verb to be is mosty irregular in many languages
@GraceMandarinChinese
@GraceMandarinChinese 3 года назад
Cool! Thank you for sharing!
@frechjo
@frechjo 3 года назад
Yes, high frequency verbs tend to be irregular much more often than low frequency verbs (to be, to go, to do, to have, to think... those are all irregular both in English and Spanish, and likely a lot of other languages). That might be due to them changing faster. It might also happen than less frequent verbs tend to stabilize in regular patterns because, being used less, it's harder to learn all different forms for them. It's probably a combination of both things.

Very helpful lesson as always, thanks. Would like to know what software do you use to make this teaching video? Procreate or good notes? (OR neither of them?) thanks :)

Thanks for the term left-branching. I've heard it said that Chinese is a topic-comment language. First the topic, then comments thereon. While Chinese sentences can be force-fit into STPMVO, a possibly awkward but grammatically correct word-order proceding as Grace teaches here is better.

But here is the thing , no one cares about the grammar mistake in China cuz sometimes we would even make those just for fun and turn them into a sort of ‘online language’

Grace! I've been watching your channel for some time and it's so so helpful! I love the variety of language concepts you disclose, a lot of really important things are not even mentioned during our Chinese lessons, however many of those are actually fundamental to understand the language ;; Thank you so much for your hard work! 💗
