it's been six months since I bought this 2007 Acura TSX with over 200 000 miles. I actually replaced a Tesla Model Y Performance with this car. what a great idea right? well today I bring a full report and everything I spent on this endless Money Pit for the last six months.
I paid 4 500 for this car which sounded like a steal at the time depending on who you ask but since then I've spent a lot of money fixing issues associated with such an old car yes it's an Acura, yes Honda vehicles seem to be able to run forever but with over 200 000 miles any vehicle will have issues associated with such an old car that require to be addressed if you want the car to continue to be reliable.

the biggest problem you have is being lazy and not do the work yourself unless you cannot do it . acuras hondas are extremely easy to work on with simple tools. everything else you do is call maintenance.

@@ichiara07 I did my research: I have owned Acura/Honda before. At 241k miles this car continues to run great with multiple road tips throughout the year. I can do some repairs. I’m a busy old man without a garage to do more.

@@outdooradventures1361 when I was a kid and my late dad was trying to teach me how to do home improvements, I’d say that about plumbers/ carpenters, etc and he’d reply frustrated: “that’s not your problem” 🤣. In reality some of us don’t have the time, the place or the need. I work over 50 hours a week and live in a condo 🤷🏻‍♂️

So your “money pit” was caused by your choices and your mechanical inexperience not the car itself. If you would have had a mechanic look at the starter in the first place you wouldn’t have incurred the costs. Major clickbait and misleading information about legitimate expenses incurred.

Carlos... congratulations on the purchase of your TSX! I own an 07 with stick shift and its been a blessing. One of the many serviceable items done was all fluids (eng, tranny, coolant, brakes and steering flush, spark plugs, belts, hoses) and is running like a champ. New brakes/rotors all around including Michelin tires. Roughly $1500 invested for everything (as I also do my own maintenance), but I will need new front/rear struts soon. Are yours the original struts? Your car is well worth it if you choose to keep it.. definitely shop around for parts though. I only buy OEM, but never at retail. Keep posting videos 👍

The guy that sold it to me did all that maintenance shortly before he sold it to me and yes, my struts are original according to him and I find them to be on their way out. I’ve been looking at options and eventually I want to replace them with quality coil overs that I can adjust to my taste. I don’t really like lowered suspensions for the sake of it but in the case of my other car, the BMW, lowering it about an inch gave it the perfect stance for my taste and the ride is very composed without being hard at all. I just don’t know enough about suspensión set ups for the TSX so I have to do more research. I still love the car. It’s at 230k now in just 9 months and next week we drive from California to Texas so the miles keep piling up without incident. I’m seriously enjoying the car of how much we save on car payments and I truly feel it presents itself really well. I get compliments everywhere, literally. Your manual transmission TSX is money.

For a daily driver, I would NEVER put money into how it looks. It's called a beater for a reason, and that reason it to beat up the road for you. Just keep it running, and drive it until you can't anymore.

I think your biggest mistake was buying a car with that many miles on it. I would have had it checked out by a mechanic. I'd want to know if it burned oil. I think you got lucky in that respect. I would have only done what was necessary because you'd never get your money back. That's just throwing good money at bad. I recently purchased a 2011 TSX, one owner, 85 k miles, new tires, good CarFax (serviced regularly, spent it's life in Reno-no rust) and checked out by a mechanic. The car's in beautiful shape, obviously taken care of. Doesn't burn oil. I paid $15,000. I'm still rolling the dice but I know the common issues with this car. It will still be cheaper to fix than buying a new car. That said, it was a horrible time to buy a car, new or used but I had no choice. Someone once said, a car is the worst investment you can make. Many things were considered in buying it. The price, the overall contextual condition of the car, I knew the mature owner. Sure, I dumped a lot of money on it but at $10k I don’t know what else I could have gotten that hits all the markers. We’ve had it for over 10 months have have put almost 16k miles which is a lot considering the fact that my wife only drives less than 2 miles to work each way so most miles are from weekend trips etc. the car had no leaks and burns no oil either, the transmission is healthy and the suspension is “ok”, could use new shocks. Congrats on your purchase. In 2015 I almost bought a 2010 with like 30k miles for $20k *correction. Obviously as you say, current used car market is nuts but don’t worry. I can’t think of anything newer that would be better than your TSX. And these cars are solid, at 85k it’s barely getting started.

I’m about to upload the 1 year update. The car is doing great and we just came back from a 1400 mile round trip… I got slightly over 30 MPG.

Here in Virginia when you buy a new car you have about $900 for “dealer processing“ then you have taxes and transportation etc. I figure for an average price car you’re spending at least $4500 before you even touch the principal so buying a used car is not a bad idea. If you can get another 20 or 30,000 miles out of it and then sell it for a decent price your money ahead. Thanks for sharing.

Yes to all that Robert. Another charge on a new car is “destination charge” and it’s usually north of $1k. Honestly, having a new car has a lot of perks but we pay for them. I usually only have one old car at a time and I usually have something much newer and within warranty. These last few months have been particularly hard since I also had to get the old BMW sorted out and I also bought tires for it so in the last six months combined I’ve spent around $13k in these two clunks. Hi Juan. With 416,000km, I recently started hearing a louder engine noise. At first, I thought it was the engine on it's way out. Thankfully, it was a leaking muffler. I paid someone to cut off the damaged part andweld a new piece of metal pipe for $150 + tax

You’re in Canada right? Rusting must be a common issue with older cars. This car has been in California her whole life so there no apparent rust. Mine now has 373k KM… not far behind you. We’ll see if I catch up within the following year. Hopefully I don’t get stupid and get the new car bug again.

I just got a 2005 Acura tsx with 90k miles. I had to replace the crankshaft seal, flushed the brake fluid, did an alignment, tie rods went bad, spark plugs, oil change, power steering pump 🤦🏽‍♂️

How much did all that run you if you don’t mind me asking? 90k miles is nothing for these cars but then again, a lot of the common issues maybe hadn’t been addressed. When I bought mine, the owner had changed the AC compressor which is a common issue closer to the 200k mile mark and the alternator.

Currently replacing the power steering rack and pinion in my 07 Acura TSX. I’ve had it since just out of high school. Bought it used with 55k miles but it was brand new to me and I had saved all my money to buy it. Did a lot of research beforehand and that was the car I wanted, no question. I’ve kept up with the major maintenance over the years, but with a young owner and as a daily driver for over a decade now (a commuter college student for the first 4 years, moving to Florida, moving back, and now a 2year old kid) it could have had a better life so far. I love it though and now that it’s older and needing replacements that can get expensive, it’s spawned a passion for learning how to fix it up myself (as well as friends/family cars). I’ve done a good amount of mechanical work on it so far, but I’ve also got plans to do some more beauty-work in the future too. Repainting it myself probably, getting the drivers seat reupholstered, fixing curb rash on the rims or getting a new set, maybe a body kit or spoiler. Nothing wrong with making the car you love look the way you want it to, but I’m definitely making sure the mechanicals are set first.👍 ball joints and an alignment are next and then we’ll be back on the road, planning for the next upgrade! Spent around 1k in just parts on it in the last year, but it was worth it!

Funny when you said that because of being young, college etc and the car might had been neglected… I totally get you. I was on the same boat when I was young. My brother handed me down a high mileage 1988 BMW 3 series that was otherwise in great shape but alike, I just didn’t have the resources for a car like that. Now my 2 cars are kept in top shape and still cheaper than buying new. Wifey refuses to replace the Acura, she just loves it.

Juan Carlos, I have an 08 TSX with the manual transmission and I got it 3 years ago with 227k, I grew up in the automotive industry, my dad had two car dealerships here in NYC. Never feel guilty about bringing a car back to its original condition, especially if your family is enjoying it! As far as respraying it, you can buy a rear deck lid in the exact same color in whatever condition you want, also you spent the same amount of money refurbishing it but it wasn’t the very next day, in other words you’re replacing things as needed and that could happen with any car out of warranty! What burdens me and you as well is the fact that you can’t purchase a service contract on a car with the amount of miles that we have, if you find a warranty or extended service contract, buy it, it’ll be worth it!

Oh trust me, no regrets. I’m used to driving much newer cars that need zero reconditioning but I lose way more in depreciation. You’re lucky to have a manual transmission one. I couldn’t because when I bought it I also needed an automatic because wifey drives it once in a while and at one point it was her daily. I don’t know if I’d do a truck swap. It’s a good idea but the paint is also fading in other areas and it would only address the issue partially. I’m not a big fan of painting cars because it’s nearly impossible to match factory paint. I ended up changing the pump because it had a leak. Then my wife just drove over a pothole and ruined the rack and pinion and I replaced that as well.

We’ve saved so much vs a new car without any headaches of driving an old car. About cleaning the radiator grill with a hose. I don’t know man. I don’t think the 2.4 runs hot at all. Exact same car here carlos but a 2004!! Previously I owned another 2004 i sold it w 280000 miles because i found one same year w only 45000 miles bought from an old guy 3 years ago currently i have 89000 miles but if you do the proper maintenance these cars will go many thousand miles the only thing i will tell you is to stick with oem parts as much as you can specially fluids but you have a great car

Hi Juan. The owners 06 manual clearly states that 91 Premium fuel is recommdended, not required. The csr has a compression of 10.5:1. The message in the gas door states Premium fuel only, which contradicts the instruction in the owners manual. In the 04-05 owners manual, it ckearly states that put on a lower octane frequetly can lead to engine damage. However, Acura removed that message in the 06 owners manual. The knock sensor should detect the knock and retard the timing so knocking would be stopped, at the expense of suffering fuel economy. I am just curuous. Thanks

When my car was around 200,000 km, I put in 87 octane and the check emission light illuminated during the freeway even though I was driving lightly. Ever since I put in 91 octane, that message never reappeared, and the car is still going strong closing to 420,000 km.

Make sure check your car ball joints specifically lower ball join last week my daughter friend 2005 tsx with 215000 on it had lower ball joint break of and came off and hit front fender and damaged so i replaced all lower ,upper ,inner and outer ball joints , lower control arms and knuckle with wheel bearing and hub.

Really appreciating your content while trying to decide if we should buy, (and how much we should pay a friend), for a 2014 TSX wagon with 92k miles. This is to replace, as daily driver, a high mileage 1997 Camry V6 that is still running surprisingly well, and which we will keep as backup/airport transportation. Current perceived TSX wagon negatives, (based on comments here), are road noise and the added cost of premium gas. The test drive will be interesting, (we haven't been in it, yet), as we've avoided Hondas thus far due to perceived harsher ride vs Toyotas.

That wagon is money! I love seeing them on the road to this day. Acuras and Hondas are not quiet vehicles but if you can get over it, you’ll be driving a comparable car to a Toyota. The Camry is a great car and that v6 is almost indestructible. I keep hearing about not needing premium gas on the TSX. These cars should have the knocking sensors… but what do I know 🤣

2008 dark grey currently 130k bought in April 2022, with 108k miles. I work at a shop so I’ve done this myself and with a lot of help from my boss. Michelin tires all around, OEM e.g brake/rotors, tirod ends, rubber joint on lower control arm, brake/trans flush, 4 oil changes, vtec solenoid gasket, front actuator spool gasket, top valve cover gasket, pcv valve w/hose, starter, air/cabin filters, new oil cap, iridium spark plugs, headlights. Still running good

All that was preventive maintenance or stuff needed? Mind now has over 228k and still runs great. My concern is the higher mileage effect on the catalytic converter as smog cert is coming up next registration.

@@JuanCarlosLTO both. Some of the the things were starting to wear out. That bushing was squeaky really loudly and I played it off for a while before I realize how serious it was. The tirod ends were blown too the ride felt smoother, the rotors were pulsating when I would gun it on the highway, the vtec gaskets were leaking as well. My only next worry are the motor and trans mounts but not in the near future hopefully

don't feel bad i paid 9000 for my 2005 six speed 108000 miles from a shop where i do my repair . I got lucky they did all the maintenance new battery belt tires etc .

I bought my daughter the exact same car and color.. for 5k.I shopped around for a bit. It had 147k miles. She's had it for about 6 months. I replaced the battery and the light bulb and ballast and igniter...total probably $650. I did all the work myself. These cars are reliable....no need to waste money trying to make it look new.

Agree. I do like to spend extra on making them look the way they drive but good point though. I even do 91 octane so far but I’m not sure it’s necessary. I just make sure I only gas up at Costco to find it cheaper

I think that you really like the car, that's why you're spending all that money on it. I had a car like that too but my mother caused some major damage to mine and I just lost my job then so instead of fixing it myself, I had to get the insurance involved but they wouldn't fix it, they totalled it instead. I bought another car with the insurance money but haven't been satisfied as much with my older car even though it's a newer car.

I really like it. Still drive it everyday now that my wife has a new car. I guess subconsciously I just wanted it to look as good as it drives. The paint is still a pending assignment that could happen later this year and then for sure I’ll be “stuck” with it for a few more years 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

In the past week, twice the car failed to start with no turn over and the dashboard lights flickered. Yesterday, when I parked the car, the car battery made a loud fizzing sound after I opened the hood.

When I was dealing with the starting issues I watched videos that said that was a sign of a bad alternator. I replaced mine unnecessarily and the one I installed is loud so I guess I could exchange it at autozone but it’ll be a shore to do it so I’ve been putting it aside.

Would doing nothing to the lights as they were perfectly functional would have been smarter than spending $60? Is something I wanted to do and honestly it was a great upgrade because it looks good to me. Sure, I can see how it can be a waste of money for others.

Owning a 09 tsx which is essentially the same as yours, for 6 years now 220k miles…the purchase in 2018 was a wise one because it had all the modern luxury features I cared about but mechanically its simple and reliable. The car only requires routine Maintanace and never an issue with power train. You purchase a Honda or Toyota product that’s 10+ years to essentially make you money because the annual cost of ownership is far less than other brands especially if you can change oil yourself, lights alternator, battery etc. in my opinion I think you tossed money at the vehicle that was more than 10 yrs old that wasn’t a collector or anything and overspent, these vehicles are workhorses to rack miles without issue.. not performance or showroom vehicles

You’re right about these cars being workhorses. Actually my coworker bought a 2009 Honda Accord around the same time I bought this one and had done nothing to it. It’s his commuter car and he doesn’t even wash it 🤣. Different approaches, I don’t regret the aesthetic upgrades, my car looks great and over a year ago from purchase I like it even more and haven’t spent a dime since. Thank you for your comment

Funnily I just posted about my ongoing trip in my TSX. This was supposed to be an in between cars car and now wifey doesn’t want to get rid of it. We had stuff to bring with us to Texas and the trunk is small compared to our previous two vehicles, both crossovers which I’m not really fond of but they’re undeniably practical.

@@JuanCarlosLTO There weren't any issues, besides the hard starting and flashing dashboard. Ended up it was just dirty terminals. I poured water before on the terminals to wash away the corrosion. It did more harm than good because rust formed and made poor poor contact. After I used a wire brush to clean the terminals, the car starts up no problem.

What I have learned is to keep an eye on maintenance parts but don’t replace them until they actually need to be replaced or if it’s literally about to go out in 1-2 more trips. Otherwise any car turns into a money pit.

When I bought my 2006 & my 2007 brand new, they came with Michelin tires. The car was originally tested with that tire setup. So that's the only tire I have ever put on my TSX's. 😎

2012 TSX Wagon with the K24 4-cylinder, 5 spd auto. 140k miles. FAILED PARTS: alternator, tensioner, water pump, both drive axles (twice), all 4 coils, catalytic converter about to die (because of coil failures and subsequent misfire/gas-wash of cat), interior reading/dome light assembly, transmission replaced under warranty at 50k miles, rear window switch failing/intermittent, both front shocks. Add to brakes, tires, fluids, regular maintenance and replacement parts (oils, fluids, filters, belts, wipers, lift struts, etc) = NO better than owning a BMW or Merc or Audi. Have had all three of those and this car has cost me no less to own/maintain/repair. Our Lexus products (GX and RX) win hands-down for lowest cost of ownership for a luxury brand vehicle.

Wow! Lots of repairs. My guess is you have put many miles on it and these repairs were late in the life of the car? In my personal experience nothing touches Lexus’ reliability in the premium segment. I had a 1993 SC300 that was a gem both aesthetically and mechanically. We loved the car but sold it at 139k miles. We’ve also had a 2018 RX and I had a new then is350 but we didn’t keep neither car past initial warranty.

@@JuanCarlosLTO I put all 140k miles on it. Trans at 55k. Coils throughout, driveshafts at 110k. Nothing crazy miles-wise. Just average product on par with American quality - or worse. At least those cars are cheaper to buy and Europeans are more-fun to drive. There's no reason to buy a Honda/Acura product...

I’m not sure man. In my particular situation I live near Tijuana and I have a shop that can do it for cheap as the most expensive part of car bodywork is prep thus labor.

Sounds like routine maintenance on a car that is over 200K. Most of it is cosmetic repairs that are not absolutely necessary so it also sounds like a self inflicted money pit.

bro if you buy expensive ass parts of course its expensive , there are so many headlights that look better than oem for way cheaper 300-400 for the set. also stop buying your parts from the auto parts store its overpriced.

True! Fortunately it has been running very solidly since. I’ve put 18k miles and even having paid for the repairs it has proven to be super cheap to own vs new.

Got my 2009 TSX with 139000 for 9500 and put about 2000 in it hopefully it will last because I have a Toyota Camry too a 2012. Bought the TSX for a back up car

Im trying to figure out how you paid $8k in maintenance, parts for this car are super cheap. Ps: Woman need their own cars to damage them by hitting potholes, your best bet it to buy her a car for herself.

Some stuff I can do myself. I drove beaters all my life when I was young so you learn a lot but unfortunately I live in a condo without my own garage so some stuff I gotta pay or go to my friends’ who live far… etc. I don’t mind opinions. I actually encourage interaction.
