I would use 1" nylon webbing, double stitched, on the sides of the bag to use as backpack straps. (Whether or not you want to add a tri-glide and a square metal ring to make the straps adjustable and/or make some more straps to attach to the top of the bag to act as shoulder straps or a crossbody strap is up to you.)

Yes, and I overestimated the strap length but if your going to make your own straps from the side lengthwise (the open edge) of the fabric and you happen to have at least 2 yards/72" will be enough to cut your 2 straps out at one time in full. Otherwise, you will have to cut and sew together until you get the 2 straps at 72". Then, you just want to make sure you turn your raw edges of straps inward and sew. Hi, now using cord would be much easier, faster and stronger for the drawstring since there would be no added sewing but I wanted to demo the fabric drawstring (softer) to show more details. By these being a simple bag not for carrying a lot of items both fabric and cord would be comfy. I hope this helps. Thanks for your question!

Along the top. She only sees the pleat bit. The rest is open at the top.
