Pedaling from 0-184 would've been amazing. There have been past records similar to this where a guy actually pedaled from 0-100mph on a road bike with a car behind him. Getting towed to 100mph is a lot of momentum, if the tow cut off from around 10mph and pedaled from there it would've been comparable to the old records of guys pedaling from 0-100mph.

For those who wonder, the bike has "1 gear" specially made for high speed. 1- you could not pedal this bike from a standing start because it's like taking off with you car on a 5th gear. That is why a starting tow is a must have. 2 -pro men or women have tried it a none was close, the record was 167 miles per hour set by a "MAN" a Dutch rider Fred Rumple Burg ; he did it the same way. so say what you want but she is the FASTEST IN THE WORLD. Why is everyone thinking she got towed? She was only towed until she reached a certain speed, then the tow line detached. In fact, well before she hit 184 mph, she was pedaling on her own!
@soylentgreenb
@soylentgreenb Год назад
Because we understand enough physics to know that she is being towed. The car is moving the air along at 184 MPH; that means in the reference frame of the air she is moving at 0 MPH; there is no air resistance. That means there is only rolling resistance (which is 10 times bigger than at 18 MPH; and 10 times nothing is still almost nothing; only limit is the wheels must take it without the slightest bit of wobble) and no air resistance (which is 10^3 = 1000 times larger than at 18 MPH). That's just a first approximation; there is also a low pressure zone behind the vehicle with an inrush of air pushing her forward. She had to pedal very lightly with almost no effort to not hit the towing vehicle. The gearing is just there because she can't pedal at the required frequency without it. This "record" is a physics demonstration. It doesn't not require effort from the cyclist, only from the engineering team. It is also incredibly dangerous; if a wheel wobbles too much you will likely die. If you ride outside of the draft from the towing vehicle you would likely get knocked off and die. This is thus simultaneously unimpressive and very dangerous.

This was actually done over a hundred years ago using a train as the support vehicle with a board track set up between the rails the top speed in that situation was a little over 120 MPH . The principle then and now are the same . The wind screen on the powered vehicle creates a vacuum that the ambient air rushes in to in order to equalize air pressure which at sea level is 14.7 PSI , if the windshield knocked it down to say 10 PSI you would have 4.7 PSI pushing on the back of this bike it doesn't seem like much but remember this is for every square inch assuming the rider is around 600 square inches and the bike maybe about 30 inches this is 2961.00 LBS of force pushing the Bike . And lets say the windscreen is not that efficient and only does half of that it is still 1480 LBS pushing on the bike , and it had to be towed up to speed . In reality using common calculations a 160 Mph Vehicle weighing say 150 LBS with 630 SQ inch frontal area would require around 48 HP to attain 180 MPH the average human can make .4.0 HP and this is considering conditioned athletes so no you can not ride a bike at 180 MPH.

She didn't pedal from 157 to 184 "on her own", there was a vehicle in front of her to counter the air resistance. That's how stayer bikes are able to achieve those speeds. Early stayer bikes in the 1920s were limited to speeds in the 120mph range because the vehicles they followed could only do 120 130. Obviously the top achievable speed depends on the vehicle breaking the air. Someone will break this record just because it was set and its there to be broken.

That's your average youtube comment section. Most of them fortunately are *kids* - or at least I hope they are. Only kids could be this stupid and narrowminded. Sadly they flood the net with their stupid comments possibly holding back development for many their own age. Then again there are no shortage of adult cretins which is even more depressing. I recall the Rinspeed Scuba car and tons of stupid comments saying:"Uh, why didn't they put a roof on that thing so the driver won't get wet??" Try explaining buoyancy to them and how a car with huge trim tanks would be impractical and never could be homologated for road use anyway. Nope, the comment section was full of "Uhh, those idiots forgot to put a roof on that car so the diver won't get wet." You're just gasping in disbelief how some morons reason - and I hope they were all 10-14 year olds.

A pretty phoney record if we're being honest. A more impressive record (both in terms of the technological innovation and the human effort involved) is the unpaced speed record, currently held by Todd Reichert at 144.17 km/h. Ultimately the only cycling record that _really_ matters is the hour record, performed either using standardised equipment in a velodrome (now known as the UCI unified hour record) and held by Bradley Wiggins at 54.526km or using a streamlined enclosed recumbent bicycle to reduce air resistance and held by Francesco Russo at 92.432km.

For those who haven't read up on this: The bike had two chains that effectively lengthened the distance of travel for each pedal stroke (this isn't your basic TDF bike). The previous record was set in the same way. Staying upright on a bicycle and inside the slipstream at that speed is impressive in itself, and doing it on the rough surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats is a challenge of its own. The video is 2 minutes long, but maybe you should have noticed that this is merely a sample of footage that is coming from an upcoming documentary. I'm certain someone will attempt to beat the record...but since the previous record was set in 1995 with a few different challengers, I'd imagine it's not exactly the easiest feat in the world to accomplish...or it would have been done within the last 23 years?

She is towed up till 0:58 then releases the rope at that point she is going 167mph the guy said it and then because of the sheild at the back of the car that causes there to be nearly no are resistance, at this point she is pedalling all on her own on a flat surface with extra large bearings in the wheels and no air resistance allowing her to accelerate even further to 184mph without being towed so technically she did pedal a bike up to 184mph. How is this really a thing? A person, on a tethered bike, gets pulled to a speed and then is released to pedal some more on their own. The excessive speed is achieved by being pulled and by being in the 'wake' of the much faster vehicle. I think it would be a better description 'world record for high-speed slowing'.

This record is probably more suited to kilometer and pursuit specialists from track cycling.
