We get our new chicks outside for the first time. But it ends in a scary moment with one of our barncats running off with a chick. Becky moves the turkey pen and separates the broody hens as well.

The cat acted out of pure instinct breed into them over thousands of years. They WILL go for anything 'mouse' sized no matter how much you trust them. They know no different and you cannot punish them for acting on instinct. House cats kills thousands of small songbirds every year even though they may well be overfed, pampered house pets. Just don't put temptation in their way.

That's one quick cat! I'm actually surprised you caught it. You could put the cat in with the hen that Becky had to relocate. I bet she'd take care of that cat's 'tude' LOL
@whitehouseonthehill
@whitehouseonthehill 6 лет назад
+Rick Mitchell - a cage match between the cat and mean broody would be quite a site! I wouldn't want the turkey babies and chicks in there, but the mano-e-mano match would be pretty funny. The cat would run away from that fight!

(Sorry for replying on an old post, just discovered your channel so bingeing!) We have five chickens and two cats, one cat couldn’t care less about the chickens, the other is fascinated but scared of the hens, and rightly so - three of five hens have attitude LOL!

White House on the Hill why do you have to relocate the cat?? It’s just acting on its instincts. I hate “barn cats” bc the humans don’t take care of them. Just let the kitty inside.

Cate7451 Exactly! I think that was very smart to relocate the cat. That way everyone is happy. It is not like it is a punishment for the cat. I personally love all cats, even barn cats. 😊

Cats are attracted to the movement. They could be so stuffed they just want to sleep and something small moving around will make them snap to full alert. The cat will play with a catch for a while before eating it. That is why the chick was ok. Just watch them with mice. Same idea. That is one lucky little chick!!

Btw before u freak out and call shock collars abuse it's not it give the animal a light uncomfortable buzz that will not hurt them but make them not want to come in that area wich would train them not to go there its much more efficient with dogs but it works well with cats to

Just having fed them may have saved the chick. The cat was probably taking it as a play thing, not necessarily to eat. My mom had a cat that would play with live mice. He would catch it, let it go, then chase it down again. He would even take them into the field next to the house and throw them into the air, still alive. Guess it gave him a challenge.

Glad you were able to rescue the chick! Our cat is actually pretty good about not attacking our chicks. He has all of the instincts that cats have. He will catch wild birds, moles, shrews, mice, and lizards and brings them into the house. And he likes to chase the squirrels! @@whitehouseonthehill My experience with cats and chicks is that the best way to avoid the cat seeing the chicks as food or prey is to allow the cat to be with you as you hold the chicks and you show the cat the chicks as you hold them in your hand. Cats are extremely curious and they are very intelligent animals. They are also pride animals so the family unit is important to them. They will more than likely see you as the alpha cat and will follow your lead.

We had a cat that lived with the chickens, had her kittens in there every year and the chickens would sit on them and babysit while she was out hunting, lol. When we got chicks, she never looked twice at them-they were friends, not food. Not all cats will steal the babies! If the cats were to live with the adults for a while, maybe their attitude towards the babies would change. Our cat did however break the eggs open sometimes, she loved eggnog and that was her version of getting it herself lol

You can build/make a duckling base if you want to so your barncat won't eat it.

The cat just wanted to have a baby of it's own. Lots of other animals had fosterlings. It was only natural that a cat would be next, LOL 😉

Thought I could trust mine too, the chickens got used to harmless cats laying in the grass and then I started losing chickens. They would wait until the chicken was close and simply reach out and nab them. Just playtime for the cats but the end was dead chicken. They didn't even eat any! Darn cats, now I don't let the chickens free range. 😢I can't afford the netting system either. So I give them grass from the mower.

+Gail Elwood - isn't that a bummer? They play with anything that moves. They're always playing with my shoelaces and extension cords.
