The Dutch flag had two variants in the early days. The one with orange (de prinsenvlag/the prince’s flag) and the one with red (de statenvlag/the flag of the states). In those days the United Netherlands was a republic, making it a bit weird to carry a prince’s flag. Also orange bleached easily in direct sunlight and faded into red quite quickly (there was no orange dye, only a mix of yellow and red. Red was quite resistant to fading while yellow was not). For both reasons it made more sense to use the statenvlag (the one with red). However neither flag had official status and both could be used (in practice it was the red/statenvlag though that was used). Fast forward to mr Adolf in the 30’s who also got some followers in the Netherlands. They were using the orange/prinsenvlag for their propaganda. In comes queen Wilhelmina in 1937 (I believe), who signed a law stating that the Dutch national flag was the red one. And that’s why the Dutch flag is red and not orange.

Drew, About the Orange on our flag (The Netherlands), We called it 'De Prinsjesvlag' or 'The prince flag'. It got changed in 1653 and replaced with the 'Staats Vlag' (state flag). Most likely due to our government type back then, when the royalty/nobility were a rivaling political entity to the Statist (De Orangisten vs. De staatsgezinden). The 'Prinsjes vlag' has sort of become a icon of hate, since extremist/hardliners represent themselves with it. Nowadays it's assosiated with rightwing politics, and sort of comparable to the US's confederate flag our Germany's Nazi flags.
