God is sovereign and obligated to work in people and ways according to his purpose and plan. This doesn’t mean we are in a position to do the same. God’s Word is not “unfair”. He is Sovereign God. He made and upholds everything always and what He says, goes. Thinking Him unfair for saying what He expects of His Bride may lead you down a path you might regret. Remember the words of a favorite hymn of mine: “All to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I freely give. I will ever love and trust (key word there) Him…” I’m not trying to jump on you or be mean, I hope you know that. Actually it was some kind of truth, but not God’s Truth. Knowing and committing evil was some kind of expanding their knowledge, but also brought death as they experienced later on when Kain let sin reign in him and murdered Abel. I can’t imagine the remorse they must have been feeling all of their lives, knowing there is not a single possibility of getting back to God as it was before. I’m grateful Jesus died for my sins so we can do exactly that, getting back to the Lord Almighty we were supposed to be at.

But someone who wishes to sincerely follow Christ takes pains to study the Word as a whole and exeget from it, rather than interpret it as it suites them. This can be a challenge as we like to think we are good with ethical intentions and that if we see something as righteous it must be. But a sincere Christian knows we are not good, well-meaning but not good, and that our ways and thoughts are not God's and that we need to interpret the Bible with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in humility. The Bible is not there to tickle our ears and boost our egos; it is God giving us His Word so we can know and understand His will.
