TVs are great nowadays, but man are they boring. We have crazy AR headsets, folding and rolling phones, cars that can crab walk, and now we finally get something weird in the TV space -- a TV that starts out as a bench but then lifts up, unfolds, and becomes a 137" screen. Sounds complicated, but Jake is here to break it down.

bezel-less tv is such a trippy effect. It feels edited in, which i suppose what you would want in a tv. Be so color accurate that you can't differentiate the content of the tv and real life

These are the kinds of people who wouldn't be caught _dead_ owning a TV when guests come over. No no, they spend all the time they're not doing important businessy business doing high-brow things like reading or painting or visiting art museums. They definitely don't have a giant TV stashed away for days they definitely don't have when all they want to do is skulk around in their PJs and stream some good trash while digging into a greasy slice of pizza...

It kind of looks like a glitch in real life... Like a portal through you see another place that you could walk through. I'm guessing due to the fact that it has literally zero bezel (and the big size). Now only if they could combine this with the "Looking Glass" tech you showcased a few years ago and the illusion would be 100x stronger 😅

Clarification for the 0.4 Virtual Pixel is a technology called Pixel Sharing. This is likely a RGBG orientation (4 sub pixels with green on opposing corners), and the LED processor will approximate pixel locations with RGB triangles. This approximation has 2 main features, significant power/heat savings and also significant price savings compared to real 0.4mm Pixel Pitch. The very large drawback to this is because of the triangle approximation text will appear slightly jagged, and from the testing at NovaStar there is still very little progress to fix this. Overall this mean Virtual Pixel can only be chosen for applications that will just have pretty landscapes, movie theaters, etc.

refresh rate limit is interesting. Probably to do with getting HDR? there is a fun color accuracy trade off with mled arrays because the rgb (+white or yellow sometimes) pixels are either on or off per primary color but can be modulated at 1000s of cycle per second in complex ways - shades are a result of some very fast and smart modulation in the driver FPGA. I have driven panels to hundreds of hz effective, but colour accuracy drops fast even with very clever tricks on the PCM.

A folding TV makes huge amounts of sense for Micro-Led. We can't build Micro-Led large enough to compete without running into dead pixels by going multi-chip/panel manufactures can cut around dead pixels with thin panel display areas. So big screens with miniLED & QD-OLED pricing. Also it has huge intial appeal to people building Cave's/Volumes for Movie/TV production.

OLED and uLED use the same principle (using LEDs as individual pixels) with OLED having many variations. uLED uses inorganic LEDs where RED and BLUE pixels can have efficiency of over 80% and therefore does not need trickery to make them brighter. Also they are made on Silicon substrate, cut and physically placed onto bigger substrate. On the other hand OLED uses organic LEDs that are (inkjet) deposited on the final size substrate, but organic materials are much more prone to deterioration and have lower efficiencies

If manufacturability wasn't such an issue, miniLED tiles are why I had hope for this tech, just imagine what you could do with a scalable display like what this and The Wall have alluded towards. Not just sizes, but also aspect ratios; personally I've been playing around with zoning my display as an 18:9, and I've gotta say there's some decent potential, especially within streaming and having chat next to a full 16:9 player, I've also found some other uses such as a notepad or calculator next to a 16:9 or slimmer main window, etc. But furthering that, imagine being able to go from a 3:2 or 5:3, or even a 1:1 if you want a true square or 4:3 for legacy uses, for a vertical-oriented reader setup to being able to go to 16/18/21:9 for entertainment, or a double-wide 32:9 (or the 18: and 21: equivalents) or even a triple-wide. How about wanting AMD's old Eyefinity setups, like the 45:16 monstrosity, or imagine that but as a :18 or :21 arrangement. Imagine if they made special final-edge tiles for the odd aspect ratios, like true film sizes or whatever Imax is running. Or imagine something even more odd, like the typical 4-monitor setup where you have a floating upper monitor, imagine being able to integrate that; though that'd also need OS support and it'd probably boil down to a large rectangle with two deadzones. Further this by being able to curve the tiles with some kind of backbone, kind of like Corsair's FLEX but down to the individual tile itself, imagine having a non-circular curve where the periphery is tighter than the center, imagine being able to approximate curvature in the vertical axis for certain setups. Tiles are the one size fits all solution, and given how they could be packaged could easily fix a lot of logistical issues, just create a good attachment system between individual tiles and maybe have one solid backbone to assist with mounting. Unfortunately miniLED manufacturability is a hindrance unless you want a massive display, 0.7mm true pixel pitch is similar to that of a 50" 1080p display, 0.4mm approximated pixel pitch honestly will not look that good in comparison to anything else, OLED has yet to become gapless, and microLED is hypothetically going to be very similar to what OLED is by time we actually get around to it.

Recently I saw how they install video walls for control rooms with work. They had a full rack for servers, encoders, and other stuff, then a second half rack to power the walls. It used 4x30A 220V power connections. They had networking between each screen and a extra control box that could control the 40+ input feeds. I think the tech of connecting panels together is cool, but the fold out thing seems like a gamic sold to rich people who were going to waste the money on something else.

Like these TVs with insane brightness values (ie 10000 nits) are hard to comprehend how it compares in practice. Forget having them come out of the floor, I want them being able to come out of the ceiling or out of the wall. No tripping hazards during the deployment and retraction stages, and still able to have a big screen TV when you need it, and when you don't, it just disappears, to be hidden either behind that 50000 dollar painting or in that expensive, modern minimalist, metal-tiled ceiling. And it's much more elegant than a retractable projection screen or a boring, giant panel TV. Rich person humor aside, if they can make it cheap enough but able to integrate it into walls or ceilings, it'd really be a better option than coming out of the floor. The wall version could come out via a 2-part wall-door swinging aside and then an arm extending it out and down enough to deploy before partially retracting and closing the upper-wall door, while using the lower wall door as a sensor-stop so that the deployed screen doesn't bang up against any expensive photos or framed art hanging on the wall behind the deployed TV. The ceiling version would just have a door that hinges out, deploys the TV, then swings closed while the TV is deployed.

Most seating arrangements in penthouses are oriented towards the windows. That's the point. And the device as a sideboard fits into the interior if you also use matching materials or colors.

The fact that they didn't send that picture and don't want to share some rudementary info... Sounds ceedy, I'm backing away.

Those 'Ultimate Tech Upgrade'-budgets need to go up a bit... Can't call it ultimate if you can't fit a TV in it.

It looks like it could be a bench. Can it be turned into a bench? Put some nice coshy cushions on it. And bam. Its a sitting bench.

based on the price and wow factor of this device, i could be easily see one or more being used by big companies to advertise and showcase things. Consumers could never dream of owning a $250,000 tv, but for a company as massive as apple, it’s quite literally pocket change.

There are plenty of billionares who spend this much for a car that just sits in their garage doing nothing. So for average person yea not possible. But there is a consumer market who could want it haha.

RIP 'literally' meaning its actual definition and not the exact opposite of its definition. You had a good run. But alas, the "just a way of speaking" trends reshape us all eventually.

Those cars generally hold or appreciate in value, that's also a big reason rich people have lots of rare cars.@@zazuch This TV will definitely depreciate massively over time.
