Totally share his opinion of cost/expectation, an old Citroën ZX diesel i bought for £500 as temporary transport was pretty slow and lacked any desirability, but it was engaging to drive, was fun to hustle down country roads (a 306 in different clothes), while trying not to lose momentum, yet was comfortable, quiet on the motorway and sipped fuel. It was a sad day when it died!

I have a 76 914 2.0 liter. I love this car, rust free, I have put new from lowered suspension to bushings, new turbo steering, rebuilt like new trans and was blessed with a tight engine with little work there. If you could drive with your eyes closed you would swear it was new and I am old enough to say I have driven new. The money invested, worth every penny.

Nice bit of journalism I frankly didn't expect and was pleasantly surprised. Admit I often forget the basics and what makes motoring fun for me. I too am no Catchpole so my limit is reached long before most cars reach theirs so why do I need the 'Sport package' when I'm already giddy with the base model?

There's no clock immediately visible in the 918, I am sure it has one buried in a menu, but that's the only thing I'd actually spend any money on over the base spec! Thanks for the comment. :)

I had a 1.7 914 about 20 years ago, and the steering was pretty crisp (although a bit heavy). I think they were probably nice and tight from the factory...and given how tired mine was in other areas, it probably had new(er) bushings, etc. Mine was a bit of a beater, but it was SO much fun to drive.

I'm on board with this guy's ethos. You can buy a lot of quality for not much money when you get over the need to be the coolest car owner, and just buy a lower end version of a quality vehicle. As for PDK, I didn't really feel it had much delay or lag, but it definitely takes a lot of the experience away from driving the car. A Cayman with a stick feels like a very livable sports car. A Cayman with PDK feels like a very compromised commuter vehicle. The PDK just makes it so much more of an appliance and I would skip it for that reason alone.

Today I have a 981 Cayman S and I’m 4 months away from taking delivery of my GT4RS. There was always something about mid-engined Porsches and mid-engined Ferraris that always struck a chord with me, hasn’t changed in over 35 years. Back then I dreamed of owning a 914-6 GT, looks like the GT4RS is the modern interpretation of that. All the Caymans are great cars, from a base 987 to the GT4RS.

Growing up we had a little black 914 just like that yellow one. I loved seeing that little thing around. I saw it as a VW as a kid and wasn't smart enough or old enough to keep ahold of it. I think it was sold on for like $1000 usd in the late 90's. Now I own a 987 Cayman S in racing yellow and love it. I'm not the biggest fan of the headlights but the driving experience you get in it is amazing. Flat 6, 6 speed, mid engine, light weight 300hp at the crank, it's a special car. The one that I will someday move up to if not a 911 would be a 981. They have that newer styling but still a flat 6 soundtrack. I also have a 2014 Cayenne diesel as the daily and a 981 would really look nice next to it.

I bought a 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 about 4 years ago, a European version in Switzerland. And this car stays with me until I die. But the 914 you drive in the video looks badly maintained. The 914 devours the corners with ease and the gearbox is only difficult when you come to a stop and have to put it in 1st but you have to work, no abs, no servo, but lots of fun. This is a vintage car that you will enjoy, which is much better than the 911 is its time, just as now the boxster is better than the 911 in twisty roads.....

Very good review. As a white beard I'm now driving the 911 Carrera S Convertible I've ever wanted. And I love it. But as a student I drove a second hand 914. And it was a nimble, phantastic car. It had it quirks. Changing gears was not easy - it was actually an achievement when you could do this without some nasty noise. The "Heiztaschen" - the heating system - was prone to rust. But the road holding capabilities were superb. I also had a 718 (Boxster) - and I agree: as much fun as the 911. But alas, a have had to have the 911 in the end... Excellent review, to say it again 😃 Note: there is a reason why the changing of gears in the 914 was such a hassle: the linkage were very long - the gearbox being behind the middle motor, which was right behind your back.

They are fun. I also owned a 968 Sport for many years, there's a Carfection film on that and the other transaxled stuff somewhere on YT.

The addition of this new guy kind of runs the risk of people believing that all brits are likeable. Anyway. Great episode and nice somewhat obscurly known historical tidbits, greetings from Latvia and.. what do I say.. oh, yeah - cheers!

I'm actually pretty horrible in real life, but thanks ;) PS - We shot our "retro or rubbish" Russian cars film in Latvia, and the tracking car driver in this Porsche shoot is from Riga ;)

*I'll take the 914 please. I had a wide arched one back in the 90's and wish I'd never sold it. Especially given what it would be worth today.*

I very much share this sentiment about base models.. I'm happy to drive a Miata (constrained by budget) but if I had more money, I'm not sure I'd ever want to trade it in for something 'superior' given that I enjoy it so much for everything it is. It's hardly a comfortable car but I have a sofa and a bed at home for that. Besides, the less options it has, the less dead weight you carry along with you, so there's that too. And less to go wrong (imagine having broken down options that are only along for the ride...) And yes, when your expectations are so low you're surprised you made it to your destination, that's another level of enjoyment; a real sense of adventure that a reliable comfortable daily driver can never give you.

Thanks for the comment. I am also an ex-MX5 (Miata) owner and get where you're coming from :)

I have a surprisingly nice 996 that was complemented by an elderly gent whose wife still had a 356 since 1966.. he said it is truly awful to drive and 50 feels dangerous and it’s worth £80000. I had a manual Cayman.. over servoed linkage and a nightmare when the cable broke.. get an auto or tiptronic .. much better

@@carmagpodcast it's practically same engine, so they should sound same (or some slight variation, if mufflers etc are different)
