I’ve owned an EV for 5 years and exclusively charged with Level 1. It actually works just fine because like most Americans, an average days driving for me is under 40 miles. 8 hours charging overnight multiplied by ~5 miles range gained per hour = full battery in the morning. When I go further, I can stop by a DC fast charging station for a bit as needed. Very happy with my car

Love this video! Glad to see an electric review! Here's to many more. Apologies if it was said already, but the reason for the drum brakes in the rear is related to longevity. The motor is in the rear and the regenerative braking kicks in first. The actual brakes only act as a supplement when needed (such as hard braking). Because of the lack of use, the disc brakes don't get same level of oxidation removal and rust develops. A number of electric car makers are going with the drums in rear approach.

Great review. I've watched a lot of reviews on the VW ID.4 and heard a lot of statistics and opinions. But no one has ever showed the underside of the car. The ID.4 is suppose to have an 8.2" ground clearance which I believe is 0.5" less than a Subaru Forester. And with the underside being somewhat protected it seems it could handle being driven on a gravel road. Nothing technical but say well graded gravel road. Which could lead to other problems like weak tires or running out of battery far away from a charger. But I digress. Thanks for the review. Looking forward to more.

I can honestly say, your reviews are by far the best. It’s about time they gave you an EV to review. Plus you got to experience something not everyone has reviewed to death. This being said, if this id4 impressed you, even driving a base Model 3 or Model Y will definitely leave a mark. 👍🏻 I’m sure you’ll get a Mustang E Or a Kia Konia (I think that’s what they’re called) soon. You’re on point with people stating something they never driven before. I think it’s general fear of change. Coming from driving sports cars, I went in with an open mind. I came away super impressed! It was just a normal rear wheel drive Model S when they first started popping up around my area. I was actually pretty bummed I had to give it back. Imagine, being upset of giving up a gigantic sedan for an NC miata! (The miata was my daily at the time..) Can’t wait for future reviews! 👏🏻

Great review, I thought the ID.4 was one of the least interesting EVs but you made me kind of like it! “Electric cars are definitely for enthusiasts, too.” Unless you don’t like well-balanced handling, relatively cheap speed, and instant torque. And what enthusiast doesn’t, isn’t that what we are trying to get ICE cars to do for 50+ years? And you haven’t even reviewed a Tesla Model 3 Performance or Model S Plaid…those cars are gonna get some beans!

I drove an EV for three years on a lease and never was inconvenienced by using just the 120V level one charging. Driving a regular car on gas means people drive it until it’s on E, then fill it up. If the EV is going to be parked over night at home, you just take a minute to plug it in, give it an overnight boost, and you probably will never run out unless you go long distances. I would still recommend a level 2, 240 V though just in case.

Thank you for a nice, informative and entertaining review as always! Here in Europe there are a lot more EV per 100 000 people than in the US, and since EVs have been around here in big numbers for a few years now, the negative things about them are more known. Like they are written off much faster than gasoline cars, because they seem to be deliberatly overdesigned, with very high prices for spare parts, and difficult to repair for the DIY. The battery pacages cost many thousand dollars, and when the EV is 10 years old and the batterypack need to be replaced, they are more likely to be written off. This make them not so enviromentally friendly as many think they are. Damage to the body of EVs are mysteriously more expensive to repair, so insurance companies more often write them off as totaled than try to repair them. For instance a headlamp on a Audi eTron cost over 3500$, and the same for the left ousidemirror on a eGolf. Parts like windshield and lamps can cost 2 to 3 times as the same parts for gasoline cars it is natural to compare them with. Have this in mind if you concider to buy an EV. Cheers.
@djgate
@djgate 2 года назад
The added cost is not because they are electric but because of lower numbers compared to ice cars, given time when the tables turn it will be the opposite.

You know, it's weird, the supercharger network is why we chose a Tesla but we have a 500km battery and almost always leave the house with a full charge. Here’s the thing with that 50 hours charging. That’s from 0 to 100%. But most EVs recommend only charging to 80% for better battery life. And when it comes to battery charging, it takes more time to go from 80% to 100% than it does to go from 0% to 50%. Also, most people won’t deplete the battery to 0. So as a daily driver you will probably only be charging from about 20-30% to 80%. It can be done with the 110 charger but a 220 charger is another option if your commute is longer.
@andrewdscott02
@andrewdscott02 3 года назад
Exactly. Once it's full once, you only have to charge it enough to replace what you used that day. Most of the time, even charging at 110v will be enough to replace a typical day's driving.

@andrewdscott02

@@geofrey01 The car can charge at 1.6kwh/hour on 110v. In 8 hours at 110v, it can put ~50 miles of range into the car. So if your average daily mileage is at or below 50 miles, you can live just fine with the ID.4 on 110v, and that's given only 8 hours to charge it. If you have 12 hours, then you can go ~73 miles per day and leave every morning with a full battery. If you have an unusually high mileage day, you grab a public L2 charger. Or you put a dryer outlet in your garage. If neither of those are possible, you shouldn't buy this vehicle.

Back when I picked up my Ranger in March I got to drive the Mach-E. It really did surprise me how much fun it was. You hit the nail on the head when it comes to issues we’ll have with our grid. When you look at the big picture we are just swapping out one problem for potentially bigger problems. Those growing pains may be more than we can handle.
@TyphoonVstrom
@TyphoonVstrom 3 года назад
Precisely. Who is going to pay for this new charging infrastructure? Is it fair for the government (meaning ALL taxpayers) to foot the bill for this, or should utility grid owners supply the infrastructure? If utility owners are expected to foot the bill, are they going to try and spread that cost across all their customers? That would illegal, as charging for a service not being used is well, theft. As it is now with liquid fuels, we pay for all of that background infrastructure when we buy fuel. What happens when evening peak electricity demand is doubled as everyone wants 5Kw to charge their vehicles at 5.30pm (when other energy usage also peaks)? Are people prepared to sacrifice their home A/C in summer to charge their EV? Should others be expected to reduce their usage instead? That is also unfair. There is no way renewables can provide that instant load at that time of day, so EVs are not going to be as environmentally friendly as they are purported to be now. So, serious issues that face us if even a large minority of drivers go to EVs are- Who foots the bill for infrastructure (why should others subsidise EV users via infrastructure and increased peak electricity costs, especially when others already pay their own infrastructure costs when buying their fuel). Who goes without power when these vehicles are charging? Who is going to pay to increase peak power generation? Will people be happy that EVs force fossil fuel to be used increasingly to generate power to charge their EVs (to supply instant peak demand), until supposedly new, green ways of providing peak power come online? To be honest, all the arguments I hear from EV zealots at the moment revolve around them gettign their fuel for free and everyone else paying for the required infrastructure upgrades. It is human selfishness and greed at an extreme level.

Was surprised you didn't comment on this at all. I also thought it is a reasonably big car for it's dimensions, at least on the inside, since it's quite tall. At least it felt very roomy inside, as you noticed yourself with legroom to spare even for four adults. Those plastic parts on the undertow do seem a little strange tho.

LOL Nope, as the the range keeps getting better. Once the industry is at 300 miles bog standard. When you have enough range to last many days, it will be very easy to support BEVs. They can be forced to charged during off peak hours thus not over stress the grid. All BEVs require to charge is basicaly equivalent to a Dryer Plug.

Your review is fair and relevant. We keep talking about electric vs gas, but really we just want a car we like that does what we want well. I have been driving the low-end Tesla, also RWD, for 3+ years. Most fun car I have ever driven. Totally practical. 60,000+ miles and only maint so far is tires and wipers (No, really. Nothing else.). Single pedal makes regular brakes last forever, and is bizarre at first and life changing once you figure it out. Kinda great.

The 50 hours is to charge from "empty" to full. If the range on a full charge is 240 miles, and you only drove it 30 miles, then to recharge to "full" should only take 6.25 hours, the average car in the US is driven 29.2 miles per day, so even if you dive twice that, are away from home 10 hours; work, driving to and from, and an errand, then recharging at 120v, 15 amps "at night" should not be a problem.
@Neojhun
@Neojhun 3 года назад
Just don't bother with 120v, it's just a bad idea to have longterm many hours high amperage loads on such electric rail. The benefit of using 240v is also the fact the code and equipment is designed to sustain that load for many hours. Luckily seems like Sarah had 240v power at the garage, it was basicaly full during garage science.
@johndavidwolf4239
@johndavidwolf4239 3 года назад
@@Neojhun : I agree that 240V is a lot better, all I was saying is that for a "daily driver" 120 V is not the "Doom and Gloom" that the "50 hours to charge" made it appear.

There are many regulatory authorities, worldwide, discussing forced noises for EVs so the blind and the distracted can hear them coming. Odds are the German makers have been aware of this.
@Timberwolf69
@Timberwolf69 3 года назад
@@lyfandeth As far as I am aware, the regulations in many european countries, including Germany, mandate systems to make EVs below a certain speed audible for their surroundings. But the german manufacturers had seen the issue from the beginning (means during first tests) and already started developing ways to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Here’s my problem with EV, It’s not even to point of taxing the grid, yet. Anyone that lives in apartment complex or even most condo’s just don’t Have access to any charging stations in the parking lots. The interstates all have rest areas and fuel stations now, but you need a parking lot full of them. I see the EV future, but is going to be really tough to get there without starting right now. 40 years ago I was using battery powered tugs in a papermill to move huge reels over 10000 lbs of paper around the plant
@chrisunderwood3453
@chrisunderwood3453 3 года назад
@@paintslinger16 Yeah, people forget sometimes I think about the off peak surplus we have right now which will be when most of the charging occurs. There are for sure going to be growing pains setting this up. No one alive now though remembers the growing pains of setting up gasoline. It would have been the same or worse as setting up electricity. We have the benefit and the curse (for change) of having a mature fuel distribution system for gasoline which makes fueling seem easy (because it is) and comparing a burgeoning electric charge network to that is apples and oranges. It will get there of course; it just won't happen over night. :)

@Neojhun
@Neojhun 3 года назад
Umm should only take 40 minutes to charge on Public DC Chargers. Best case scenario is Private Level 2 Chargers where you already park. Apartment Building with parking have no problems have 7kw Chargers installed, the only problem is the cost and proper regulation to do it properly safely. Best thing about private chargers it takes like 30 seconds of your time.
@0hypnotoad0
@0hypnotoad0 3 года назад
Charges faster than that (38 minutes) but with that said using nothing but DC fast charging all the time takes it's toll on the battery pack, if you can't have access to level 1 or 2 charging at home or work, then owning an EV won't be a fun time. The minimum charging standard that people should be chasing after for home and work, is the 3.6 kW NEMA 6-20 receptacle, it's very cheap to install these and they give enough charging power to keep your car topped up at all times.
@garrettstevens2232
@garrettstevens2232 3 года назад
@@0hypnotoad0 the cost jump between the 6-20 and the 14-50 isn't too bad as long as it is a short run between the breaker and the outlet. I upgraded my existing 6-20 outlet to the 14-50 and it was only about $150 in materials (bigger breaker, receptacle, surface mount box and 25 feet of 6/3 Romex). The bulk of the cost was the wire. An electrician's labor should be the same for either outlet.

Sarah ❤️ EVs now! 😊 Although 50 hours of charging seems insane on the 120V charge cable, most people will not be charging this up from empty. They’ll just plug it in every night when they get home and it will probably be topped off when they leave in the morning since most will have driven 50 or fewer miles the day before. And you need to review a TESLA! I think your mind will be blown lol
