To be Devils Advocate for Lady Danbury: The woman literally just got out of an intense bout of marital SA and hasn't felt the affection of a loving man in literal YEARS. If she wants to slam it down big style with granddaddy Bridgerton , let her. I support womans rights and womens wrongs. 😭

Re the Lady Danbury affair. I don’t believe it has to do with her being with someone attractive. It never actually was. It’s the way he made her feel and how tender he was with her after this horrific marriage she had and all the unhappiness that involved. Attraction is a very very weird, subjective matter. I actually loved the Lady Danbury/Lord Ledger storyline. I didn't think it was for shock value at all. Violet's mother was awful, and I think Danbury & Ledger both truly did find something in one another. If his circumstances had been different, I believe they would have married. It's tragic, but beautiful, IMO.

In reference to Lady Danbury’s “affair” with Lord Ledger, I think expectations for romantic love are different. Being loved by someone doesn’t have to be a great love. It can be what you need in that moment. What she needed in that moment was a man who saw her and allowed her to just be. It’s uncomplicated and while it may not be George and Charlotte, it was enough to make her feel loved. At that moment, she also didn’t know she would become friends with Violet. Was she supposed to say, “Girl, I can’t be friends with you because when I was younger I banged your dad while he was still married to your racist mom!”?
@pamayapaya

I think the fans are pretty evenly split between how we feel about Lady Danbury and Lord Ledger. Some were mad because it’s Violet’s dad or thought he was too old for her (and unattractive) and some were 100% behind it. I’m not gonna lie, I will just support Lady Danbury doing whatever as long as she’s happy because I just love her and think she deserves to be happy. So I didn’t have a problem with the two of them hooking up at all. If anything I wish the way it was presented and developed was a bit different but hey that’s what Ao3 is for 😂

I think lady Danbury needed to feel loved! Not a committed relationship, but how to feel loved, and have a tender moment with someone who knows how to make her feel special; even if it’s for a moment! Yes it is messy, but she needed an outlet, and lord Ledger was it!

IMO, Violet's dad was the rebound guy Lady Danbury needed in that moment. He listened, got her mind off of her grieving for a bit and she realized in the sex scene that she does have power and took her power.
@ReeniEspino
@ReeniEspino Год назад
IMHO, Lord Ledger isn't Agatha's great love. He was kind and supportive, and listened to her opinions -- which is likely why the sex was good if he had that same attitude. But they had to have concluded that they were better off friends and left it at that, because they knew there was no way it could be something real. She saw how he poured all this caring into Violet, and not his wife, and as she grew up Agatha came to value her friendship as an extension of her trust with her father. I can totally see her having a fun, illicit years-long booty-call relationship with Charlotte's brother though. Lady Danbury will have travelled and seen parts of the world later, as she was free to do so as a widow with her children older -- meeting players and being a girlboss, but also experiencing love on her own terms.

I honestly didn’t mind the Lady D storyline because I never considered Ledger to be the great love she was talking about in S2. I don’t think they were in love with each other. They both just had terrible partners and kinda trauma bonded over it. Glad our good sis got her cheeks clapped the right way though! Would love to see another mini series with Lady D as the lead and maybe explore an actual love story. Can’t wait for episode 6!

I am probably in the minority but I love Lady Danbury’s love affair with Violet’s father. He is younger and better looking than her husband was. He is a gentle, kind man who respects her and thinks she’s wonderful. I think that is just what she needs after years of being dismissed and treated as a breeder. Plus, he doesn’t seem like the type to run around having affairs. There’s a sweetness between them that i can’t help but love.

I honestly loved the storyline of Violet being horny. So far we've seen so much about her still grieving her husband that I was very pleasantly surprised by the prospect of her maybe having a love interest in S3, especially as a middle-aged woman. That's really not something I expected this show to do and I hope they go through with it. I mean, she doesn't have to find her new great love, but her accepting that she can have fun and a love life after her husband's death would be amazing. Regarding the Lady Danbury/Lord Ledger situation, when they first met I naively thought that they were going to become friends, which would have been so wholesome (and I always want more strong platonic relationships betweens men and women in stories, there aren't enough), so yeah, that turn of events had me surprised lol. I can see were Agatha was coming from, as he was very kind to her and actually listened to what she had to say. He treated her like a human being, and after that marriage, I understand why she would've been attracted to him. However I still think he was a weird choice, considering that Agatha later befriends his daughter. I also wasn't a big fan of having him cheat on his wife and having Agatha be the "other woman". I don't HATE the whole thing, but I think there would've been other ways to go.

I think that’s what this show is showing. That life is and marriage is not always rainbows and butterflies just like in real life. I didn’t mind lady Danbury and lord ledger having an affair. He wasn’t happy and she was never happy with her husband and they understood each other but knew it couldn’t be anything more that what is was. What I liked About QC is that it is more realistic. So no I don’t think they did lady danbury dirty. She is who she is because of her past just like the queen and just like all of us. The trials We go through in life are shaping our future self. I think shonda did a great job.

I honestly liked the Lady Danbury storyline (and I know you haven't seen how the Violet side is resolved yet so I won't say anything about that!) but it was just nice to see her with a man who cared about her, it was so sweet that he made her a birthday hat, he was just a lovely person and she deserved to spend a bit of time with someone who was kind and interested in her as a person. The fact that he's older and not like a supermodel is whatever to me because I think what she actually got from her connection with him is a lot more valuable tbh. Good for her! (Also not a massive fan of Charlotte's brother lol he's good looking but that's it)
@littlehouseinthebigapple5716
I think Agatha’s affair with lord ledger is in line with her character arc. We know in the future she ends up essentially alone. So whoever she fell in love with it would not be able to work out ultimately. But also, I think Agatha is a character who has had lots of losses. This is another loss, in a way. She becomes socially powerful because she seems to end up investing in that, her social life rather than her love life. I wonder if in some ways this arc shows us why she becomes herself. But also think of what we know about lord ledger… caught in a loveless marriage with a woman he detests. Focused on the true love of his life, his daughter, but not a satisfying love of his own. Both of them have this in common… sad loveless marriages. I can see why they would secretly bond over telling truths about their situations that would be socially unacceptable elsewhere. But also, they both have a lot to admire in one another. Agatha is developing into a strong self determined beautiful young woman and ledger seems to want similar opportunities for his daughter. Anyway, everyone shies away from a cheating story but I bet it was pretty common in those days when people were expected to solve the problem of a loveless marriage with a satisfying affair. Otherwise, in a different time, ledger could have divorced his wife and found love.
@reallollabunny
@reallollabunny Год назад
well, lord Five, I think, said it to Anthony in S02E01: "Then you can move on to more pleasurable pursuits...and more pleasurable partners" I completely agree with you that affairs such as this were probably not rare. also, it never got further than that. Agatha was a perfect gentleman in that respect - once he told her that he wanted to prioritise his daughter and family, she backed off and never made any problems for him. do you think Agatha was even in love with him? I don't think she was. I think she was flattered, and she was "joyful", as whe said - she had fun with him, she liked his company, he gave her pleasure...but it was never the great love story that Bridgerton tells. and I feel that she will have many more such encounters in her life - none will last a lifetime but all will be "joyful" and she will be free to experience them on her own terms. to me, she is still the ultimate role models and I want to become "the bad bitch in red" when I grow up (that's The Pink Popcast's nickname for Lady Danbury :D)
@littlehouseinthebigapple5716
@@reallollabunny hmmm maybe not “in love” but I think she loved him to a degree. He reached out to her and saw something special in her which he wanted to support. She needed him in those dark confusing days after danbury’s death when she felt so isolated and lost. I think in some ways she could be honest with him and he let he be herself. I think she grew as a person in that relationship. He taught her a lot… how to endure the rules of the ton, how to survive a bad marriage, how to find friendship and pleasure and in the end how to prioritize your responsibilities. I think it would be strange if she didn’t have some love for him. But overall, maybe she learned who she was and how to love herself first. Lady Danbury is an amazingly complex character. Not a lot of love for her own kids (possibly due to likely feeling physically abused in the process of making them and having to disassociate from the process) she described it as putting another one of “his” large children in her. These feelings might have stifled her ability to connect and even love them. But she did her duty by them and found other children to spend her affection on, the duke and Violet for example. And I think her love for violet stems from her feelings for leger. I too love lady D and I swear if we do not get more of her back story I will really be disappointed. As much as i love Charlotte I think I relate more to Agatha, a woman who would rather maintain her personal power than have a traditional style relationship. Reminds me of how queen Elizabeth refused to marry in order to maintain her own power, sought lovers and companionship outside of marriage and kept it like that for life. In fact, for Agatha, that might have made leger more palatable as he could never truly claim her! 🤔🙌🏼

@@littlehouseinthebigapple5716 oh, for sure she was attracted to him partly because he was already taken. I am a bit of an Agatha IRL - I have no desire for a long-term relationship because I appreciate my freedom and independence too much. As a result, I am often attracted to unavailable people. It is a real thing. It does have a bit to do with trauma, I think - her being raised to be someone's wife definitely scarred her and put her off marriage to an extent. And I agree with you that she had love for Ledger. He was her first, he was a great teacher and a good friend, and he made her feel alive and free, at least for a minute. I just don't feel she was IN love with him. They probably ended things before anyone could get too attached, and it was for the better. I only watched this series for her, honestly. She's been my favourite character since S01E01 and, even though I adore Benedict, and Eloise, and Kate... My heart belongs to the wise, fierce middle-aged woman who nobody dares to fuck with. She's the epythome of feminism, in my book, wouldn't you say? :D
@littlehouseinthebigapple5716
@@reallollabunny I think in some ways they’ve managed to include so many feminine archetypes. But I love how they’ve put a spin on them all. Charlottes pure love and sacrifice is still imperfect…. Her sacrifice of her life to love George destroyed her relationships with her children. Violet the perfect and loving wife finds her memories are not enough and her body has needs. And as for Agatha, yes they’ve made her the feminist of the show but again, she doesn’t reject men… she just finds a way to integrate her needs. I would love to know if Agatha had any other loves (we know she’s the voice of discretion) and how they may have shaped her views. I like how they show that physical needs can be uncoupled from romance in many cases. Like Agatha said, it’s not only young romantic girls who have stories to tell, every woman (and man) has a unique story and they are valuable.

@@littlehouseinthebigapple5716 I definitely appreciate the versions of female strength that we see. I was rather impressed by the King's mother - she was unlikable, that is sure, but was strong and independent and had worked hard to survive. I really enjoyed it when she told Agatha that she had been "an admirable adversary" - yes, it was screwed up and obviously a result of her own trauma, but I did see parts of myself in that moment and I respected her for saying it. I also absolutely LOVED seeing Violet and Agatha discuss love and intimacy as middle-aged women. this was the most feminist moment, in my view - showing that women don't stop existing and feeling when they stop being "young". and yes, show us more of Agatha's (and, really, everyone else's) formative relationships and how they changed them as people!

I think so much of this show is love in unexpected places, like Lady Danbury didn’t intend to fall in love with Violet’s dad-just like Brimsley and Reynolds, just like Daphne and Simon, and so many others. Yes the age difference is a little uncomfortable, but also remember she was married to someone vastly older, so that may just be her comfort zone. He was so kind to her and really listened to her, which was a complete 180 from her husband, that’s why she was so attracted to him, and because he’s a good man, he ended things with her and went back to his wife and family. Sigh. It’s all so sad, but it kind of launches Lady Danbury into her next stage of life, and quite frankly, her power.

The fan consensus is that we were here for Lady Danbury and Lord Ledger mainly because he was the antithesis of her husband. Plus, his wife was racist af and liked to belittle Lady Danbury. And even if you didn't personally find him appealing lmao I thought it was hot because he was kind and patient with her and they spent quality time talking with each other before anything even happened. I also really like his voice for some reason, it really does something for me. There are people who think there was a considerable age difference but I would assume that Agatha was in her mid to late twenties and that Lord Ledger was likely in his late thirties or early forties so it wasn't like she was 19 and he was 50 lol

I think that, given the circumstances and time period, I don't have a problem with Lady Danbury and Violet's dad. While we don't know their exact ages at the time of the affair, Agatha was probably in her late twenties and Violet a young teenager (I think it's stated by her mother that she wasn't "out" yet?). So, that puts Lord Ledger in his early 40's? Definitely younger than LD's late husband. I actually like that he isn't the stereotypical "hot" leading man, as that implies that LD liked/loved him for more than his looks (which is admirable). And I feel for LL...his wife was atrocious.

Re Agatha and Violet storyline, I think I get/accept it a little more. Indulge me in a bit of hypothetical math. Lets say their age gap is 15. So in Charlotte era V is 15 and A is a young widow of 30. Lord Ledger is a middle aged 50 something (although the actor looks older but, whatevaa). In the Bridgerton era V will know of this secret scandal of A's just as she is discovering other forms of love. She has only known "the one true love" until now and thats what she has passed on to Daphne and Anthony. But now her garden is reblooming in real time.. and A shared how her's never bloomed through marriage but after (I think her words were "Herman rots inside me"..) All these other experiences of "love" seem like a revelation to her in her 50s. Also the Queen's retort to her idea about love resulting in marriage and the contrast of Charlotte's love being based on choosing to love, not choosing the object of love. Crucially, she is in the same age group her father was when he strayed. She probably remembers her mom being a disagreeable racist .. not sharing the intellect or sensitivity/tenderness of her father. And so she is primed at this time more than any other time in her life to "get" Lady Danbury and Lord Ledger's affair. She is learning about other forms of love.. non monogamous or garden reblooming types.. whatever you might call. Plus their friendship comes after.. much after the affair.. not before /during. So I dont see why V should hold it agaist A. Admittedly the weakest of all storylines but still, I'm for it, if it gives Lady Danbury her due.

I suppose my wondering is whether Violet would have made her love match and insisted on her children all having love matches if she hadn't had the example of her parents' bad marriage. No doubt her father is the one who allowed her to make a love-match when it was her time to marry, because he knew all the misery of an unhappy match that was only based on rank or wealth or fleeting lust. The Ton's marriage market certainly wouldn't teach anyone to prioritize love over all other considerations. (Though, I mean, this is Romance Novel land and nobody ends up truly marrying into poverty for love tbh they either have a wildly lucrative career thanks to their talents or a surprise inheritance and I'm not MAD I'd love either or both options personally please and thank you God save me from capitalism but also let me buy nice stuff I want.) Edit: also idk if it's because I'm asexual or what but the whole Lady Danbury & Lord Ledger thing just kind of washed over me and it...it's fine. Their romance serves them and their characters and their storyline and that's enough for me. Not every romance has to be a once in a lifetime thing; and I always thought Lady Danbury enjoyed more than one lover in her widowhood--I feel like Lord L is just the first and therefore a very fond memory. And this isn't meant to be antagonistic or anything but if we can celebrate older women's sexuality then Lord Ledger's age/attractiveness gets a pass, too. I know gender means women particularly are sidelined once they move beyond the strictest possible standards of conventional attractiveness BUT making room for diversity in romance to me means every body and its consensual pleasures gets to be cheered for. And I know the scene is framed for Lady D's pleasure, primarily; but Lord L clearly craved a connection, too. Obviously he doesn't seem the sort to force himself on his wife the way Lord Danbury did, so if his marriage is on the rocks, he's probably gone years without sex or companionship at this point unless he's availing himself of sex workers. (No shame if he is; but he's such a family man I don't see HIM thinking that's an acceptable thing, and there's still shades of exploitation about it give his wealth and privilege. An open connection to a woman matching his own status and freely being with him of her own will and for no other motive may be something he's never known.)

You put your thoughts so well! I had the same feelings about Lord Ledger and negative reactions to him, but was unable to articulate them until I read your comment. It does seem shallow to judge LL based on looks when it is obvious that he looks just fine to LD. AND he is kind to her, listens to her, and is an amazing father - all qualities that LD's dead husband lacked. I totally understand why she was attracted to him. Thank you for your post!

HARD disagree on Lady danbury. Sorrows, sorrows, prayers lol. I loved it, i thought they both were what the other needed and it was brief and it's sad but I still think it's beautiful. Just because he isn't some ideal attractive man like simon or anthony doesn't mean he doesn't have value or doesn't deserve love. Anyway, i loved their little story I thought it made sense

I liked lady Danbury and lord ledger together. Violets mother was a racist. And lord Danbury was a selfish jerk who abused his wife. What Agatha found with lord ledger was a kind, patient man who cared about her and listened to what she had to say. That kind of man has appeal beyond the physical even though I don’t think he was unattractive. I never had any interest in lady Danbury with adolphus simply based on how he treated his sister. What charlotte wanted, how she felt didn’t matter. She was a tool to help him maintain power, status & protection for his country. I didn’t see him treating Agatha any differently.

I am mixed with Lady Danbury’s affair. Don’t get me wrong, I hate affairs and how they are glamorized. Narratively, I like how it is written. Bear with me. Both she and Violet’s father are in the same position. They were both trapped in abusive marriages. Lord Danbury (the husband) just used Lady Danbury as a sex bag whenever he wanted and never cared about her happiness. He wouldn’t even let her speak. Violet’s dad is quiet with his wife because they cannot agree and I think he wants to avoid a fight. He feels comfortable chatting with Violet more. They can be themselves around each other whereas the wife is bigoted and conservative. Violet’s governess has to warn Violet to hold her tongue out of worry that she may upset her mom or the ton. It made sense Lady Danbury loved Violet’s dad. He was the only one who treated her as a person and willing to talk with her instead of being a racist pig. They had some things in common. I feel in the end, they woke each other up and could not help how they felt. Spoilers for next episode: him arriving with violet was his subtle way of saying, we made a mistake and can’t be with each other any more. I really don’t think Lady Danbury was trying to hurt Violet.

I'm a bit torn about the Lady Danbury/Lord Ledger story line. Though it is messy (I'm looking forward to your thoughts on how they wrap it up), I think its a good example of how relationships are complicated and intertwine in unexpected ways especially in the ton an insular society which is undergoing so much change at this time. Lord Ledger may not be a young conventionally "hot" dreamboat but he is a generally good man. It was him who started the dance at the ball with Lady Danbury when no one else would intermingle. He respected her and saw her in a way that no one else had. He didn't have expectations of who or how she should be. She could just exist with him. They also had the connection of both having horrible spouses who they had no affection or emotional connection to. Them being drawn to each other makes sense within that context. That said the age difference definitely makes me...eh. I also have thoughts about this story line being a connection between Lady Danbury and Violet and how it plays into their relationship and who Lady Danbury is as an individual but it is vaguely spoiler-y so I'll save that for the last video if I remember!

I really wanted Lady Danbury (who I love) to be with Queen Charlotte's brother too! I kind of get her affair with Charlotte's dad in terms of having someone who is established in the "old world" take interest in her for her mind and spirit, that validation and care she hasn't gotten, if that makes sense?

I’m ok with Lady D having a “ fling” with lord Ledger but I’m saddened if he was that one “ great love” because I think she deserved better. Also when she got with lord Legldger Violet was young and she wasn’t her friend then. And in present day she doesn’t really owe Violet any explanations.

I also love them bringing in Violets "blooming desires", but then again, it's Shonda Rhimes, and since I'm currently rewatching select parts of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, I'm not really surprised. But the Lord Ledger storyline... Yeah not my fave 😅

my 2 cents on Agatha / Lord Ledger: I had the same initial reaction as you (but he's your best FRIEND's dad!). I do have a huge kink for age gaps and I still find it slightly off. mostly because of the fact that she did become friends with Violet and never told her (40+years!) I like the dad - he's cool, chill and kind. and, just to be clear, he liked her. it was not like she fell madly in love with him or something. no, he liked her, she felt desired for the first time ever and she said "why the hell not?". I am sure she kept very fond memories of him because, in a way, he was her first. her first actually desirable sexual partner. so I get what is happening. on the other hand, I am a bit pissed. episode 1, when he invited her to dance, I found it to be a great gesture of "us" and "them" being able to co-exist happily. but, at the back of my mind, I was thinking "I hope they don't make this into more of a story". it kinda ruined his gesture from ep.1 for me :/ they are still an age gap couple (10-15 years, perhaps) and I still liked that but there is a bit of yuck in there with the yum for me, for sure.

Re: book, the QC was written after the show not the other way around, basically with Julia adding on to Shonda’s script. Since Julia didn’t include any of the future scenes other than the brief beginning and ending one it doesn’t make as much sense to include the Ledgers without older Violet and Danbury. Julia talked about it somewhere but basically I think they wanted the book to only be set in the past since the back and forth doesn’t work as well. I hope that Lady Danbury did have another great love and would love if they did another spin off with episodes focuses on follow ups to all the younger characters!

I also wasn't a fan of Lady Danbury's affair, mostly because I felt like she deserved much better than this short thing.. or maybe it was me who just expected more after the build-up, like I wanted more build-up in her relationship with the now-not-so-mystery-man, not just build-up in the mystery of his identity. And I suspected that it will probably end tragically, but I wanted to experience rooting for this relationship. I don't know, maybe I just wanted it to be a longer storyline.

Or maybe I was just dissapointed because I thought there is going to be this sweet friendship between them, and I would've loved seeing a male-female friendship that isn't romantic, that's about supporting each other. (Of course it's fine that this wasn't the plan, I was just hoping for it.)

Now I hate that time when lady Danbury taught Kate too much went Kate said she didn't want to get married. and she started saying things like "I lived this life, I loved" when she literally would have lived better without that man and she was very well alone. so it was hypocritical and she was too hard on kate all season long((

There are at least 40 years between the affair with Lord Ledger and this conversation with Kate. Even married men and women had (more or less concealed) affairs all the time. There is every possibility that Lady Dunbury as a widow had gentleman friends in these decades.
