Ehhh. I still think somethings been taken away from 1.0 1.0 felt like space subnautica. And NMS since then has turned into a super mainstream open world game design. I can't bring myself to enjoy it. All the progression feels entirely artificial.

Day 1 player here, 1.0 wasn't anything like subnautica. Not sure how you can see the similarities. Current NMS does have some mainstream aspects to it but compared to the real mainstream games, it still doesn't compare. What sets it apart is that it doesn't push a competitive atmosphere but instead a collaborative one. Not everyone likes that, I understand, but it definitely makes for some wholesome entertainment in an industry pretty much dominated by violent and stressfully competitive battle-royal games.

At a core level, it's a different game for sure, but yes I totally agree. Everything released for NMS after the launch debacle feels like it was done with quality, no comprimise and for actual game enjoyment. Where as Elite feels almost the opposite. At launch it was amazing, then every additional feature felt like a souless checkbox of requirements.

I wish this is how Elite handled capital ships. No rent, no worrying about fuel costs (aside from crafting special fuels), etc. It makes so much sense to have the freighter supported by local economies; in the lore, the crew trades on their own and maintains the ship, it makes no sense for one person to grind for money and support the ship on their own aside from supplying fuel.

I know i can only play once a week cause of work...this keeps from getting a Fleet Carrier cause i don't have the time to grind to keep the thing operational. It really blows my mind that NMS is 6 years old and never asked once for dlc, or post launch funds. They really committed to making the base game the absolute best it could be, and it seems to have paid off. NMS is genuinely one of (if not the best) sci fi games of all time.

You can tell the money is not why they are making the game. Sure the are probably going to be set for the rest of their lives on how much they have made, but they aren't trying to cash grab for more. This is how I would make a game if I ever did. Once I had my 1.6-2.3 million diversely invested so I can indefinitely maintain my middle class american lifestyle I would simply use that investment to fund the rest of my career making the game I want to play. I don't ever have to find an investor again, its just me paying my own salary to make the game I want to make.

NMS is slowly becoming my go to Space game now. ED was my favorite but we're lucky if we get 2 decdnt updates a year. NMS usually has 1 massive size update, 2 shmediums, and 1 or 2 small tweeks. Let alone the expeditions. They just need to redo how the systems are generated (not the planets but how the star system "map" is placed) and this'll be my favorite space game by a long shot

@@BDubH22 my big thing is exploration. Naturally in ED ships like the Asp or the Conda were my go to ships in deep space. Exploring the systems were fun. It was awesome jumping into a star system with Neutrons or black holes or ELW. What was a 2/10 was the Planetary side of things. Sure we had Neverest but that landmark was 1 in a billion. Rest were bland and flat. Ironically NMS is the complete opposite with it being absolutely 11/10 planet exploration and -2/10 system exploration. @IRMentat
@IRMentat 2 года назад
indeed, sounds liek it's made the freighter less of a mule you summon in-system to fill with items you can't carry on foot/ship and more like a legit mobile-base you can use for travel, utilities and as a central hub for your adventures (and that's something sorely lacking in most of the other space-games, a proper sense of adventure and ownership (EVE has it, x-series has it). most of the others limit you to being the only shipping-driver available in a galaxy devoid of other cargo haulers despite every other station selling them for next to nothing compered to the prices of trade-goods. it looked like we can finally mod some "outside" areas a bit as well and that's gotten me surprisingly excited given how restrictive the room-placement was in the original iteration. NMS is interesting enough in it's colour palette and point of interest density (asteroid fields, planets, stations and misc-relics that having the option to make an observation gantry is a pretty nice QoL change.

Instant and full system scanning with a single button press is revolutionary when I'm in an exploration mood. 4:50 I really like the idea of this expedition. Starships for local system only and Freighter for interstellar. Kind of like the nerf to the vehicles to make the Mech that much more powerful. However there is little use for the vehicles now. I like the idea of specialization but not if it just takes all usefulness from the old tools. Another example was when all Starships could be upgraded to have the same cargo hold size. I think they somewhat fixed in the outlaws update? But it made haulers kinda pointless. I enjoyed this video, thank you. People who have not spent time with No Man’s Sky should know that all of these updates and expansions are free to anyone owning the game, even if they bought it back in 2016. And there have never been any microtransactions. The developer is responsive to comments and suggestions and the community of players is unusually positive and creative. I think this update’s name, Endurance, refers to the way this update makes exploring long distances in your freighter more interesting so you want to keep going, endure. Hello Games has always worked toward encouraging exploration and creation and avoiding boredom and frustration. A perceived weakness in the game has been running out of things to do in late game play, when you have maximum money, elaborate bases and farms, best upgraded ships etc. The Expeditions address this, and so does this update. I look forward to seeing what other incentives and temptations the developers come up with to keep long time players enjoying the journey and entice new players.

I love my freighter fleet. I already used it as my mobile home throughout the galaxy as I wander, searching for a home solar system to conquer and dominate with an iron fist. But with the new Endurance update, I'm probably just going to remain space-bound and conquer a solar system from the comfort of my ship. Hello Games tapped into the gold mine of game development. They are the prime example of what it looks like when a game dev company stays committed to their work.
@Starganderfish
@Starganderfish 2 года назад
How do you conquer and dominate a Solar System in this game? The landscape is empty and repetitive, the NPC's are cardboard cutouts and the story is kind of puzzle-based platformery. Are there actually any gameplay loops or story elements that would let you conquer a planet or are you referring more to rolepalying/imagining you rule?
@StockportJambo

@@Starganderfish I think you misunderstand the point of NMS. You don't 'conquer' systems. You explore and interact with them. There is little to no combat in the game. There are dozens of gameplay loops, but none of them are about shooting people in the face.

NMS are knocking it out of the park. I always liked freighters and now I love them. I have the ability to jump over 300ly, scan a system, find something interesting and fly down there. As an example, I needed Radon gas so I looked it up in the catalogue, found a suitable planet, flew down there, set up a base that had a mining machine and storage containers along with a teleporter. I then went off did a couple other missions and the next day teleported in to grab the radon and teleported back to the freighter. So easy! Imagine doing that in Elite Dangerous which still doesn't have mining machines even though you could deploy them in Frontier! Madness really.

Yeah, if they can nail the space part of the game, it'd be perfect. By that, I mean replicating that sensation you get in Elite and Star Citizen where space itself feels like a haunting void that you can truly get lost in. I think the flight mechanics and maybe a slight, artistic update can nail that feeling in imo. Don't know if I explained that well, but that's really what NMS is lacking still imo. Just the sensation of being in this scary void with only your ships to guide and protect you across the galaxies.

This update is pretty amazing, and there's also been some recent undocumented changes that largely flew under the radar introduced in the previous update. Capital freighter battle encounters used to have a hard limit of once per 3 hours (in addition to warping 5 times). This time limit was removed so you'll encounter the fights much more frequently if you're travelling, and they also upgrades the rewards for saving freighters so you actually want to do it for reasons other than buying a new freighter.

I first got the game six months after launch on a Steam Sale and enjoyed it quite a bit. Since then, each new update has introduced a plethora of new things. Adding capital ships and frigates has been the biggest change for me, since before that earning money was pretty difficult, and now it's a snap, as long as you have fuel. My capital ship isn't that big, only a B rank. The one change I did notice was before it let me have a portal and all my base support staff on my capital ship, but now those are all gone. I guess they want to encourage more land-based bases again. I've rarely used the Exocraft since I didn't really need to have planetside bases much before, except on key resource planets where I would basically just throw down a hab and a portal. Never gotten a mech suit, or fought giant sandworms or anything like that still. I've been stuck on the Mind Arc quest for years. Last year I finally built one, but forgot to have it in my inventory. I went back and got it, but I wasn't able to turn the quest in at that point again, and I couldn't find a new location, so I had to start all over. So much has changed, I wonder if it would be worth starting a new game and losing my hundreds of hours of progress. I've heard they start you off a lot faster now, but I sure as heck don't want to have to find and grind out a high level multi-tool or Hauler again.
